Sri Lanka in Bangladesh, 3 ODI Series, 2021
Venue: Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur
Date & Time: 28 May 2021
RR: 4.45 | Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh by 97 runs
So that is it from this series! Bangladesh creates history as they win their first bilateral series against Sri Lanka. The series though ended with a sour note for them as Sri Lanka ended the series with a comprehensive win and have lots of positives to take back home. We hope you enjoyed the coverage of the series. We look forward to seeing you for future games. Till then, goodbye and take care!
Kusal Perera, the Sri Lankan skipper, says that they needed a win and it is good to win here, and when he gets set while batting, then he looks to bat out there for a longer time. Feels that he took chances early on and when he got set, he tried to change his gears. Praises their bowling department and also opines that their fielding has been brilliant too and in the first two games, their batting let them down.
Mushfiqur Rahim, THE MAN OF THE SERIES, says that the boys worked really hard for this series and they came up with good plans and executed well. Feels that when you play 15+ years, you need to contribute more and more for your country and he looks to do that. Further praises Sri Lanka, as they always come hard. Adds that he enjoys the pressure while batting and he uses that to bat well.
Dushmantha Chameera, THE MAN OF THE MATCH, says that he is very happy with how he bowled, and coming back after losing the first two games was good. Tells that he was not under pressure coming into this series and he is relaxed. Adds that he is pleased with his role with Sri Lanka.
Tamim Iqbal, the Bangladesh skipper, says that they have won the series but feels that they did not play a complete game but opines that they need to work on a lot of areas. Says that Sri Lanka had an attacking mindset coming into the game and it worked out for them. Tells that the seniors are contributing big but he says that he believes in his youngsters and feels that if they start to perform well, then they will start playing better.
It was a complete performance from Sri Lanka. Earlier in the day, they won the toss and opted to bat. A decision that proved to be a good one. Skipper, Kusal Perera led from the front as the tourists managed to get to 286 on the back of a century from the skipper and a fifty from Dhananjaya de Silva. Taskin Ahmed was the pick of the bowler for Bangladesh as he managed to finish with a 4-fer but overall Bangladesh did not look good with the ball or in the field.
It was the Dushmantha Chameera show with the ball. As his pace and aggression proved to be too good for the Bangladeshi batsman. He derailed the Bangladesh chase even before it could get off the station. He finished with superb figures of 5/16 from his 9. The other bowlers followed suit. Wanindu Hasaranga and debutant Ramesh Mendis both got two wickets while Binura wrapped up his debut with a wicket as well.
Chasing 287, Bangladesh needed a solid start but that did not happen. They lost Naim, Shakib, and Tamim all in Powerplay 1 and with hardly any runs on the board. Mushfiqur and Mosaddek tried to steady the ship but the required run rate kept creeping up and that saw the pressure keep building. Mahmudullah and Mosaddek managed to get fifties but barring that, there was hardly anything to talk about.
A comprehensive win for Sri Lanka and they finish the series with a win and get their first win of World Cup Super League. Bangladesh will be disappointed with their performance with the bat as they never looked in the game with the bat.
Mustafizur Rahman is the last man in!
Time for Powerplay 3! Now, a maximum of 5 players can be placed outside the 30-yard circle, until the end of the innings.
Review time! As the clock ticked towards 1, Sri Lanka has decided to go for the review. It is for LBW and they sounded excited. Let's see how this goes.
Just two more wickets needed for Sri Lanka to finish the game. Shoriful Islam is the second-last man in.
Another one bites the dust. Now, it is Taskin Ahmed, who comes out.
Who's in now? Mehidy Hasan strides out.
Review! This is for LBW and Dushmantha Chameera was very excited for the same. Looked to be close and now, we will see what the replays have to say.
DRINKS! Sri Lanka are well and truly on top of the game and are well on their way to finish the series with a win. Bangladesh's chase never really took off and they have been behind the 8-ball since the start. They need 162 in 110 balls and Mahmudullah will now have to take the lead in this chase. He will be joined by Afif Hossain post the break.
Mahmudullah walks out to bat.
DRINKS. Not the start you want with the ball, when you are chasing a big total like this. Bangladesh have let Chameera dominate them and he has ran through the top order of the hosts. Now, Rahim and Hossain have their work cut out for them and will look to steady the ship, which they have done so far, and look to up the run-scoring tempo. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will be hoping that they can snaffle important timely breakthroughs, throughout the course of the game. An interesting phase of play awaits.
Change. Spin time as Wanindu Hasaranga will roll his arm now.
Bowling change. Chamika Karunaratne is introduced into the attack.
Time for Powerplay 2! Now, a maximum of 4 fielders can be placed outside the 30-yard circle, until the end of the 40th over.
Who will walk out to bat now? It is going to be Mosaddek Hossain. He had a tough time with the ball. Can he make amends with the bat? Bangladesh desperately need him to do that.
Massive moment in this game! Tamim Iqbal has been given out caught behind. He though is sure that there is no bat involved and decided to opt for the review.
Binura Fernando will bowl now.
Who's in now? It is Mushfiqur Rahim!
Out comes Shakib Al Hasan at Number 3.
Who will bowl now? Time for some pace now as Dushmantha Chameera will bowl now.
