Bangladesh in Sri Lanka, 2 Test Series, 2021
Venue: Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Kandy
Date: 29 April-03 May, 2021
RR: 3.2 | Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh by 209 runs
That is it from the Test series! Sri Lanka have won their first series of 2021 and have unearthed a gem in young Praveen Jayawickrama. Bangladesh have succumbed yet again in the longest form. Mominul Haque will hope that his side can improve and finally take that next step in the red-ball format. Hope you enjoyed the coverage. We hope to see you soon. Till then, goodbye and take care!
For his fantastic performance with the bat in both the Tests in this series, Sri Lankan skipper, Dimuth Karunaratne is named the Player of the Series. Karunaratne says they are playing well and tells he needed to deliver as captain as he was short of runs coming into the series. Credits the bowlers for the way they bowled. Karunaratne says he was too positive from the first ball against West Indies. Tells he spoke to the coaches about it and was told to respect the bowlers and the good ball and that is what he tried to do. Karunaratne says they have faith they can win games and tells they needed to put score on the board. Karunaratne says everything went well in this Test from the word go. Credits Praveen and says he was fantastic along with Ramesh Mendis and tells once they get more confidence from playing, they will be able to fill the shoes of Rangana Herath.
Bangladesh skipper, Mominul Haque, says that the toss was the most important thing in his view. He believes there was nothing on the first two days for the bowlers and hence he feels the toss was crucial. Mominul says the conditions were very similar to home. Mominul says while playing international cricket there will be pressure and one should embrace it. Mominul feels they lost the game in the first innings as they failed to put up score with the bat in the first innings.
For his dream debut, picking up 11 wickets in his maiden outing and becoming the first Sri Lankan to do so. No prizes for guessing, Praveen Jayawickrama is named the Man of the Match. Jayawickrama says that he is extremely happy as this was his goal as a child. Jayawickrama says that the team helped him as there was some pressure but he was able to overcome those.
Stay tuned for the presentation as we hear from both the skippers and find out who our Man of the Match and Player of the Series are!
Bangladesh needed 436 runs to win, a task that always looked a bit far-fetched. If not that, the tourists needed to bat 5 sessions to end this game in a stalemate. That too felt like a daunting task as the pitch was turning square. The visitors failed to do either. Bangladesh batters did try to put up a fight but none of the top order batter could play a marathon innings. That fight was not enough as they failed by a huge score of 209! Once again, debutant and the new star of Sri Lanka cricket, Praveen Jayawickrama was once again in the thick of action. He followed his 6-fer with another 5-wicket haul to become the first Sri Lankan and the 4th player in the world to get 10 or more wickets on Test debut. He was excellently supported by Ramesh Mendis who finished the second innings with a 4-fer.
With a lead of 242 and a lot of time remaining in the Test, Karunaratne decided to bat again. The hosts added up another 194 runs in quick time. Karunaratne was once again the key as he scored 66 off just 78 balls. With the lead of 436, and 5 sessions to have a go at Bangladesh, the Sri Lankan skipper declared. Taijul Islam was the star with the ball for Bangladesh in the second innings as he finished with a 5-fer. That though was not enough as once again the tourists failed to grab 10 wickets.
The pitch by now had started to become tough to bat on as it started to turn and assist the spinners. Bangladesh's reply started off well as Tamim took charge with his 92. At 214/3, the tourists were looking solid but none of the batters could capitalize on their starts and Bangladesh lost their last 7 wickets for mere 37 runs. It was the Jayawickrama show with the ball as he was instrumental in the collapse and the debutant introduced himself to the Test arena with a bang! Finishing with 6/92! While Suranga Lakmal and Ramesh Mendis grabbed 2 each.
So a quick summary of the Test. Dimuth Karunaratne won the crucial coin toss and decided to bat. A decision that was very important. The pitch looked docile on Day 1 as there was nothing for the bowlers. The hosts took advantage of it and on the back of centuries from Karunaratne and Thirimanne managed to put up a huge score of 493 before declaring. Taskin Ahmed grabbed a 4-fer but the tourists were run ragged on the field and they were unable to pick up 10 wickets.
Sri Lanka have done it! After three consecutive draws, they have got one over the line and seal the series with a comprehensive win! A dream debut for young Praveen Jayawickrama! 11 wickets on debut, the best ever by a left arm spinner on Test debut as he has won the game and the series for his side in his first appearance in Test cricket. Bangladesh put up a fight but could not manage to find a way to deal with young Praveen Jayawickrama!
Review! Abu Jayed has been adjudged LBW but he has opted for the review. Will the replays delay the inevitable or will that be the game and series for Sri Lanka?
The last man in is Abu Jayed!
Shoriful Islam walks out to bat at number 10!
DRINKS! 2 wickets so far in the day for Sri Lanka as they get closer to sealing the series with an emphatic win. Mehidy Hasan is still out there putting a fight in the middle but he will need someone to fight from the other end too. Taskin Ahmed has battled for 26 balls but how long can he continue? Their first target would be to get through the remaining of the session without any further damage.
Ramesh Mendis is back!
The new batsman in is Taskin Ahmed!
Change in bowling. First one of the day and it sees Dhananjaya de Silva come into the attack.
The new man in is Taijul Islam!
Review! Liton Das has been adjudged LBW but he has decided to review it. Will the replays roll in his favour?
Who will bowl from the other end to start the day? It will be Ramesh Mendis.
We are all set to begin Day 5. The Sri Lanka players are out in the middle. Mehidy Hasan and Liton Das will resume their innings for Bangladesh. Praveen Jayawickrama will start the proceedings for Day 5.
Russell Domingo, Bangladesh coach, is up for a chat. He says Bangladesh would look to play for a draw. Adds that in the first Test their batsmen got big runs. Mentions that Mominul played very well in the first Test. Further says they can take positives from this series as Tamim Iqbal's form was important for them. Domingo says that the lower order would look to get some good score and make Sri Lanka work hard.
Pitch Report - Russel Arnold is down with the pitch report. He says that the ball is going to spin. Adds that Bangladesh batsmen have got starts but no one could settle in there. Mentions that Bangladesh need to bat well to survive and it is not going to be easy.
Hello and welcome to the final day of the second and final Test between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. It has been an intriguing Test so far and we are in for a thrilling finale. All three results seem to be possible as we enter the final day. Bangladesh need 260 to win this game, a task which might be a little too tough but still very much a possibility. The hosts need 5 wickets on a track that has been turning a web around the batters. The weather and lights might play a big part in this game ending in a stalemate. Can the hosts get the job done or will Bangladesh pull of a miracle?
... Day 5, Session 1 ...
That is all from us on Day 4! A win for Sri Lanka is a very likely outcome but in the game of cricket, there are no guarantees. Do join us on 3rd May, 2021 for the Day 5 coverage. The action is set to begin 15 mins early tomorrow. It will start at 0945 local (0415 GMT). Till then, take care and goodbye!
After 9 days of Test cricket, I think we can say with some degree of confidence that this series will not end in a draw. Sri Lanka are most likely of the two teams to come out on top on Day 5. Their batsmen added 194 runs to their first-innings lead and set a mammoth target of 437 for Bangladesh. They were led by Dimuth Karunaratne in the second innings and Pathum Nissanka, Dhananjaya de Silva and Niroshan Dickwella played good cameos to take them to 194 in their second innings. Bangladesh bowled well in patches but gave away too many runs in the first hour of play. A better performance by them in the first hour could have made a big impact in this game.
For Sri Lanka, it was all about their spinners. Ramesh Mendis and Praveen Jayawickrama have used the conditions well and have put their team well on top. Mendis picked up Tamim Iqbal early but was taken on by Saif Hassan. However, Jayawickrama came on to dismiss Hassan and Najmul Hussain Shanto. Mendis came back and dismissed the Bangladeshi skipper and Mushfiqur Rahim. For Sri Lanka, all that they need now is patience. With the pitch assisting the spinners, they should be able to pick up these 5 wickets if they are patient enough with the ball.
Bangladesh needed a strong start if they ever were going to win this one. Tamim Iqbal played a few good strokes but was out to a beauty by Ramesh Mendis. Saif Hassan was living dangerously and was out after hitting a few boundaries. Najmul Hossain Shanto was bowled courtesy a ripper by Praveen Jayawickrama. Mominul Haque played a poor shot to get out to Mendis and Mushfiqur Rahim was out to the off-spinner too. Most of their batters got a start but were unable to go on to score a big innings. There were a few close calls towards the end of the day but Liton Das and Mehidy Hasan have survived. A tough battle awaits Bangladesh tomorrow, a win from here seems unlikely and they would be happy if they draw this one.
UPDATE 1718 local (1148 GMT) - STUMPS HAVE BEEN CALLED! The light was not going to improve and this was going to happen anytime.
Right! Bad light and a bit of drizzle mean that play has been cut short today. Sri Lanka will be the happier side as they have a firm grip on this game. Bangladesh, on the other hand, need to put on a very special performance if they want to win this game.
UPDATE 1704 local (1134 GMT) - It has started to rain. Looks like a drizzle. The covers are on at the moment.
The umpires check the light meter and ask the players to go off the field. They feel it is not good enough to continue. Not sure how much it will improve from here but we will wait and watch.
Review time! An appeal for catch! Mehidy Hasan is the man in question. Ultra Edge shows there is a flat line when the ball passes the bat. They are checking for lbw also. Ball Tracker shows that it is umpire's call and it is missing the stumps. Bangladesh retain their review.
Review time! An appeal for lbw! Liton Das is the man in question. He has not offered any shot here. Ball Tracker shows that it is missing the stumps. The onfield decision has to be overturned. Bangladesh retain their review.
DRINKS! Sri Lanka are keeping it tight. They have picked two wickets and the spinners are bowling well here. Ramesh Mendis picked both those wickets. On the other hand, Bangladesh are fighting for survival here. They have lost their captain and they have lost Mushfiqur Rahim who was playing so well. They would want Liton Das and Mehidy Hasan to stay till the end of day's play.
Mehidy Hasan is the new man in.
The physio is out in the middle for Mushfiqur Rahim. He is in pain here as in the previous over he hit the ball into his ankle. The magic spray has been applied.
Review time! Sri Lanka have gone up for LBW. Liton Das is the man in question. Ultra Edge rolls in and it shows that bat is not involved. Ball Tracker shows that the impact is outside off.
Liton Das is new man in.
Change in bowling. Ramesh Mendis (11-0-60-1) comes back on.
Is that a stumping? The umpires have gone upstairs to check it. It looks close but it looks like there is some part of the boot behind the crease.
We are back! With around 34 overs left in the day, it promises to be an exciting session. A few wickets for Sri Lanka and Day 5 would become a mere formality. Bangladesh would want to avoid that at any cost. Praveen Jayawickrama to continue with the ball.
... Day 4, Session 3 ...
Right then! Sri Lanka need 7 wickets to win the series and would look to take as many as possible at the end of Day 4. Bangladesh, on the other hand, would not want to lose any more wicket and would want this pair to continue till the end of day's play. Join us in 20 minutes for the final session of Day 4!
Bangladesh, on the other hand, started their chase with a fine start but they lost Tamim Iqbal for 24. The partnership between Saif Hassan and Najmul Hossain Shanto was going good. Saif Hassan played some good shots but he played a terrible shot to lose his wicket. Shanto was bowled by an excellent delivery by Praveen Jayawickrama. He was looking good but did not last long. Mominul Haque is playing well and will look to stay till the end of Day 4. He would want Rahim to support him.
It has been an excellent session for Sri Lanka. They have picked 3 wickets and are 7 wickets away from winning the series. Praveen Jayawickrama took 2 wickets and Ramesh Mendis took the other wicket. The spinners have been bowling well in tandem. Lakmal did not get any wicket till now.
Dhananjaya de Silva is into the attack.
Mushfiqur Rahim is the new batsman in.
Mominul Haque is the new man.
Review time! An appeal for lbw! Hossain Shanto is the man in question. Ultra Edge shows there is a spike on this one. Sri Lanka have only one review left.
DRINKS! Sri Lanka are bowling very well here. The spinners are keeping it tight. They have picked one wicket. On the other hand, Bangladesh would want this partnership to continue.
Review time! An appeal for lbw! Saif Hassan is the man in question. Ultra Edge shows there is no bat involved. Ball Tracker shows that it is missing the leg stump. Bangladesh retain their review.
Change. Praveen Jayawickrama comes on now.
Review time! Sri Lanka have reviewed this for LBW. The ball is missing the off pole.
Najmul Hossain Shanto is the new man in.
Ramesh Mendis to bowl from the other end.
