It's become a norm. A challenge here, a challenge there from Sri Lanka, but India somehow manage to drag past it and emerge as the more dominant and ruthless side, with them favourites to seal another series over their neighbours. Sri Lanka's 100th Twenty20 International also resulted in their second-lowest total and their sixth consecutive loss in the format as they slipped to a 93-run loss in Cuttack after being bowled out for 87 in a chase of 181.

There was a certain sense of helplessness that reflected in Thisara Perera's statements after the first T20I. "We don't have any players apart from these. We have to choose from this squad of fifteen," he said. This, coming from a captain who has just been appointed in charge of improving things and the fortune of the team.

Unfortunately for Sri Lanka, there are no quick fixes. And hence, they travel to Indore again as the underdogs trying to keep the series alive. Skills won't improve overnight, nor will players find form quickly considering the two teams play three games in five days. And despite that, it's never too late to start working to get better.

The first thing the Sri Lankan think-tank should try and do is improve their body language. Even when they have managed to produce a situation to nose ahead in the contest, they haven't been able to sustain the momentum. The visitors have done well so far on the tour when there has been help in the track for their bowlers. They gave India a mighty scare in Kolkata and then went on to register an impressive win in Dharamsala in the first One-Day International.

The bowlers, however, will face another stern test in Indore with a placid track ahead of them. And if that's the case, they can, and should, follow the Angelo Mathews template. The all-rounder, despite the evident dip in pace, has managed to reduce the number of bad balls and build pressure.

Far too easily, Sri Lankan bowlers have been hit off their plans but Mathews has sort of managed to hold his own. And then there's rigidity that's hurting them as well. Even when their plans haven't worked, they have shown reluctance to move away from it. They paid the price in Mohali even when Rohit Sharma found it too easy to hammer the wide yorkers and the same plan hurt them in Cuttack as well.

For Sri Lanka, there seems no end to their troubles. However, if they are able to come up with spirited performances, it'll do them a world of good and give them some sense of satisfaction with a troublesome year coming to an end.

There are problems for India too. The whole idea of picking young players was to give them a chance to don the India colours. Promising prospects - Basil Thampi and Mohammed Siraj - are next in line but the challenge is to find a place for them in the XI. The opportunity cannot be created at the risk of weakening the bowling line-up especially when the team is playing one batsman less.

And that could well mean the young pacers will have to wait for another opportunity, or a little longer, to prove their mettle.

When: India vs Sri Lanka, 2nd T20I, December 22, 1900 IST

Where: Holkar Stadium, Indore

What to expect: The winter chill in the city is picking up and that also means this clash too will see a lot of dew. History of the venue suggests there will be plenty of runs scored and the onus again will fall on the Sri Lankan bowlers to make the game for their batsmen.

Teams news:

India: With a clinical win in the first T20I, the think-tank will look to seal the series first and then think of giving opportunities to those on the bench. That means an extended wait is on the cards for Deepak Hooda, Thampi, Siraj and Washington Sundar.

Probable XI: Rohit Sharma (c), KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, MS Dhoni (wk), Manish Pandey, Dinesh Karthik, Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah.

Sri Lanka: Injury had forced Kusal Perera out of action for seven months and he made a comeback to the national side in the last T20I. However, the rustiness was on show, and in a steep chase, he looked horribly out of touch. Sri Lanka can look to bring in Danushka Gunathilaka but will be more inclined to back Perera and bank on him to find form.

Probable XI: Niroshan Dickwella (wk), Upul Tharanga, Kusal Perera/Danushka Gunathilaka, Angelo Mathews, Asela Gunaratne, Dasun Shanaka, Thisara Perera (c), Akila Dananjaya, Dushmantha Chameera, Nuwan Pradeep, Vishwa Fernando.

What they said:

"I think MS (Dhoni) is in great shape, he almost killed me as soon as he came into bat. I don't know what form you are talking about but every time I switch on the TV or every time I have played with him, he always seems to get the runs. He is somebody we all look up to, he is somebody who is a match-winner and he will always be one" - KL Rahul too threw in his weight behind Dhoni just like the team management.

"It's definitely concerning. When we came here from Sri Lanka, the main thing was to compete. Very disappointed with the way we batted, at least we should bat the 20 overs, losing is ok but we have to at least come close to the target" - some not so promising words and signs from Upul Tharanga
