4

to Dhawan, FOUR, just a fraction short if you had to be too critical of . Dhawan was onto that in a flash. Rocked back and then timed it off the middle of the bat, easily cleared mid-on and on these fast outfields, it will just go away

6

to Rohit, SIX, Rohit has hit that a long way up in the air. It goes all the way too. Down the track and to the pitch this time, lofts it way back into the stands at long-on. Doesn't want to tie him down or impose his will against him

W

to Rohit, out Bowled!! Gone. The crowd have been silenced. Can't seem to pick the googly at all. Especially from . The same thing happened in the ODI series in Sri Lanka. Comprehensively cleaned up. Googly tossed up and drawing the batsman forward, an uncertain push out in front of the body, with bat-pad gap visible, the ball turns in and then disturbs timber. That's not the way to play the spinner on a turning track. Looked ugly - that gap between bat and pad. Sri Lanka get the early wicket they needed badly. Rohit b 7(14) [6s-1]

4

to Dhawan, FOUR, quick feet and lovely hands. Down the track and once he got to the pitch, had the time and freedom to place it wherever he wanted. Flicks wide of mid-on

4

to Dhawan, FOUR, Dhawan looks to be in a hurry. Charges and smashes it hard into the ground. Through short cover's hands and races away

4

to Dhawan, FOUR, smashes the slower delivery. Picked the cutter which was on a fuller length outside off, drilled it through a host of fielders on the off-side

4

to Dhawan, FOUR, drags it down and too easy for Dhawan. Rocks back and pulls wide of short mid-wicket. Once he got it well wide of deep square, it was always a boundary

4

to Shreyas Iyer, FOUR, that is another bad ball and India are racing away with the chase. Down leg and a free-hit, swept past leg-slip and long leg is too square to cut that off

4

to Shreyas Iyer, FOUR, shakes his head. Chaturanga - the sub with a horrible miss. Short and dragged down, poor delivery to be fair and Shreyas Iyer pulled that off the front foot, the sub on the dive allowed the ball to slip away from his grasp. Can't do that when you are defending such a low total

4

to Shreyas Iyer, FOUR, all class. The 50-run stand is up and Dhawan pats Shreyas Iyer for the landmark. A floaty half-volley outside off from , Shreyas Iyer got forward and creamed it with grace and elegance, it beat the diving cover fielder with ease

4

to Shreyas Iyer, FOUR, first ball from produces an edge and to be fair Mathews did well to even get a hand to that at slip. Shreyas Iyer backing away on the cut and the edge just flew. Tipped over the bar and the ball trickles down to the third man fence. is a very disappointed man

OT

to Shreyas Iyer, no run, again an lbw appeal. Not given and Sri Lanka review. Impact is on leg-stump and didn't straighten enough in my opinion to hit leg. Given not out, so trimming or clipping won't do. Anxious wait as ball-tracking is taking time to load. Missing and Sri Lanka have lost their only review. It was the exuberance of and Dickwella which forced Perera to go for it. To the naked eye it looked clear that it was sliding down. Once again, the quicker ball rushing through off the pitch and leaving Shreyas Iyer trapped on the pad. Footwork non-existent there

4

to Shreyas Iyer, FOUR, uses his feet and looks to go over mid-wicket. Catches the thick inside edge of the bat and runs away behind square. Raced across the outfield and beat the fielder. beat Shreyas Iyer in flight there

4

to Shreyas Iyer, FOUR, full marks to Dananjaya but he cannot even get a fingertip on that despite a full-length dive. Was a ramp by Shreyas Iyer as he directed the short delivery deliberately in the air towards third man. Was always a difficult catch, not made any easy by the running and then dipping on him. Cruel to call that a dropped catch

6

to Shreyas Iyer, SIX, shot. But the footwork made the shot possible. Down the track and to the pitch before heaving it into the night sky. Had the elevation to clear long-on

OT

to Shreyas Iyer, 1 run, fifty for Shreyas Iyer. Consecutive ones. How many batsmen can claim to have outscored Dhawan in an ODI! Not an easy task. Flays it to sweeper cover and raises the bat to soak in all the applause. Has looked very good today

4

to Shreyas Iyer, FOUR, superb batting. Earlier in the air, he used the feet to a tossed up delivery, made the bowler bowl short, used that to his advantage, went back and sliced the steer past a diving backward point. Leaves a dejected man

4

to Dhawan, FOUR, authoritative! Dismissed this harmless shortish delivery from around off through mid-wicket. The typical Dhawan swagger accompanied that hit

6

to Dhawan, SIX, 50 for Dhawan. Has picked the googly and deposited it into the mid-wicket stands. Lots of air on that and Dhawan was down in a flash to slog-sweep that way back into the crowd. A meaty hit and the crowd are lapping all this up

4

to Shreyas Iyer, FOUR, now they are going after too. Tosses it up outside off, once he sees the flight on that, Shreyas Iyer decides to go aerial. Carves it over cover and it trickles away to the fence. Sort of mistimed it, but got enough bat on that to get a four

4

to Dhawan, byes, FOUR, back to fooling Dickwella although Dhawan played a part in that as well. Loopy full-toss outside off, Dhawan sweeps and misses, Dickwella is unsighted and it runs away once it beats him

4

to Dhawan, FOUR, he had so much time that he attempted two shots and connected with the second one before getting it to the fence. Slow and shortish outside off, Dhawan was eyeing the slog-sweep, then changed his mind and cut it late, behind backward point. Quick outfield does the rest

W

to Shreyas Iyer, out Caught by Lakmal!! Hundred thrown away on a platter which was presented to him gift-wrapped. But that's how he plays will be the counter argument. Backed away and was cramped by this incoming back of a length delivery at his body, spliced it straight to the fielder at mid-on. Had no power to clear the man. End of a fine knock, but he should convert all these 50s to 100s - that's where Kohli is unreal in ODIs. Some respite for Sri Lanka though. Shreyas Iyer c Lakmal b 65(63) [4s-8 6s-1]

4

to Karthik, FOUR, from around middle-stump Karthik has flicked it through vacant mid-wicket and gets four. Classy stroke but helped by being too full and Karthik used the angle well

OT

to Karthik, no run, given out lbw and even as Simon Fry was nodding, DK running signalled for the review. I think a bottom edge. Yes. Substantial one at that. UltraEdge throws up a big spike and DK survives. Was walking across to flick this inslanting delivery, it kept a bit low and chalked the toe end of the bat. Even to the naked eye there looked and seemed to be bat involved

OT

to Dhawan, 1 run, very full on off, drilled to long-off. 4000 ODI runs for Dhawan

4

to Dhawan, FOUR, too full and too straight. Nonchalantly lifted over mid-on by Dhawan and there's that swag coming out from his body language

4

to Dhawan, FOUR, slog. But with the angle and Dhawan gets four. Has made up his mind to end this quickly. So goes half-down and swipes it over square leg. Beats deep mid easily

6

to Dhawan, SIX, superb use of the feet. Didn't need to get to the pitch because he then would have no room to free the arms. So uses the reach and lofts into the long-on stands. Effortless batting

4

to Dhawan, FOUR, slower and tossed up on the stumps, kneels down and slogs over mid-wicket. Only deep square in the deep and this is another boundary to Dhawan. Wants the 100 and that's why he is playing the big hits

4

to Dhawan, FOUR, doing his best to help Dhawan get to 100 quickly and end the match at the same time. Length delivery down leg, needed a tickle which Dhawan provided and it just ran away to the fence

4

to Karthik, FOUR, Karthik is Dhawan's friend. Don't worry about the 100 he seems to say to Dhawan who nods. Half-volley outside off, drilled after coming forward, stuck his left-hand out and then withdrew, mid-off put in a dive but it just skipped past him - such was the timing

4

to Dhawan, FOUR, doesn't matter how many you have on the leg-side. Dhawan will still find the boundary. Quicker ball on the pads, sliding on with the angle, whipped to the deep backward square fence. Rocketed to the fence

4

to Dhawan, FOUR, Dhawan doesn't join the SRT club! Of being denied a hundred by DK. Our colleague Kumar who is from Orissa needles me saying that DK did the same to Sachin back in 2009 at the Barabati. But Dhawan has hogged the strike and reaches his hundred. The sweep was intended to go behind square, but it ran off the edge and since it was hit so hard, split deep square and deep mid to perfection. The celebrations follow

4

to Karthik, FOUR, all over! India haven't lost a bilateral series in any format in 2017. That is some record. This game is over quickly. Very quickly. 215 has been made to look paltry - relatively speaking of course. The winning hit came from DK who saw the tossed up delivery outside off and lofted it up and over cover. No-one in the deep and it gives India the series 2-1

4

to Gunathilaka, FOUR, that's raced away like a rocket! A bit of away movement but the length is short and there is a hint of width, Gunathilaka stands tall and belts the punch through the covers. Once he found the gap, the result was a foregone conclusion

4

to Gunathilaka, FOUR, use of the feet and away she goes! Gunathilaka advances down the track and although adjusted by shortening the length, the batsman was equal to the task. Clubs it over mid-wicket

W

to Gunathilaka, out Caught by Rohit!! One shot too many and Gunathilaka is out of here! The intent was good - to be aggressive but he was literally going after everything. That approach doesn't work against quality bowlers and has the last laugh. Premeditated charge down the track from Gunathilaka and the length was cleverly shortened. It didn't prevent Danushka from going through the lofted stroke and the result, a mistimed chip straight to Rohit who didn't have to budge at mid-on. Gunathilaka c Rohit b 13(12) [4s-2]

4

to Samarawickrama, FOUR, shot! This lad can play I tell you. He's a real talent. Gets off the mark with a real classy stroke. Overpitched and a bit straighter in line, he calmly flicks it through mid-wicket. All elegance and it races away. First runs in ODI cricket for Samarawickrama!

4

to Tharanga, FOUR, that's a meaty blow! In the zone for the lofted shot and Tharanga goes after it. Made sweet contact off the blade to clear mid-on comfortably. One bounce into the ad hoardings

4

to Tharanga, FOUR, that's been blasted away! errs on the shorter side and pays the price. Tharanga rocks back in a jiffy and launches the pull over mid-wicket. The intent is clear from the Lankans, they want to go hard at the new balls

4

to Tharanga, FOUR, whipped away! The classic pick up shot and executed well by Tharanga. Gets across a touch to this fuller ball and lifts it over square leg. Struck it well and found the fence comfortably. Lightning outfield here

4

to Tharanga, FOUR, more runs! This is a poor ball from and he gets the treatment. Too full and it's also on the pads, Tharanga gets a little tickle to deflect it down the leg-side. Well wide of Dhoni and it's another boundary. Tharanga seems to have gotten into the zone

4

Pandya to Tharanga, FOUR, that's a typical left-hander's stroke. Just a bit of width outside off and Tharanga delays the cut to beat backward point. Third man had no chance due to this lightning outfield

4

Pandya to Tharanga, FOUR, edged but no slip! Might not have carried if there was someone there though, certainly could have saved the boundary. Full and angling in from outside off, Tharanga pushes with hard hands on the drive and gets a thick edge. Third man was too square

4

Pandya to Tharanga, FOUR, up and over this time! Fuller ball and it's a cross-seamer from Pandya, Tharanga launches it over mid-on. Not off the middle but still clears the infield with ease

4

Pandya to Tharanga, FOUR, aerial again but once more, beats the fielder. Full and tempting the drive, Tharanga doesn't bother keeping it down as he looks to play it on the up. Wide of the diving mid-off fielder

4

Pandya to Tharanga, FOUR, four in a row! This was a streaky one though but Tharanga won't mind it at all. Slower ball perhaps and he gets a bottom edge onto the drive. Dies on Dhoni who puts in the dive but it falls short of him and sneaks past him as well

4

Pandya to Tharanga, FOUR, ah boy! This is getting worse for Pandya, his confidence is getting a beating. Fuller ball outside off, Tharanga holds his shape and lifts it wide of mid-off. Clean strike and this is probably the one that he has middled the best this over. Another boundary

4

Pandya to Samarawickrama, FOUR, this is lovely batting from Samarawickrama. Walks down the track and shuffles a touch to wrist this away through backward square leg. There are two men in the deep on the leg-side but he's found the gap perfectly

OT

Yadav to Tharanga, 1 run, tossed up invitingly outside off, Tharanga drives it to the right of long-off. Brings up his 36th ODI fifty and it's been a fluent knock thus far, intent right from the word go. He'll know though that his job is not even half done yet

4

to Samarawickrama, FOUR, fielding blip from the two spinners and it's a boundary! Short ball and Samarawickrama goes for the pull, gets a top edge that goes aerial through backward square leg. Kuldeep and Chahal were stationed at fine leg and deep square leg respectivel, tried to converge on it but eventually it went through them to the fence. Looked shoddy

4

Yadav to Samarawickrama, FOUR, probably the best shot that he has played so far. Tossed up generously and Samarawickrama advances down the track. The thing he did well was to go straight over the bowler's head. Lofted it cleanly and found the fence

6

to Tharanga, SIX, smashed into the sightscreen! For a moment, it seemed like he had mistimed it but no, he hadn't! Tossed up around off, Tharanga stood tall and made a bit of room before blasting it over the bowler's head. All the way!

4

to Tharanga, FOUR, superb batting from Tharanga, he is on a roll today. Rocks back and cuts it delicately to beat backward point. The outfield does the rest. Just a trifle too short from and it's put away. Brings up the 100-run stand and the platform has been set nicely for the Lankans

D

Yadav to Samarawickrama, 1 run, dropped by Karthik! Probably didn't time the leap properly and a chance goes down. Samarawickrama used his feet to whip it away but couldn't keep it down. Luckily for him, the chance isn't taken. Karthik isn't a tall man and that helped the batsman. The pressure was getting to the Lankans and this was the opportunity that had to be grabbed

4

to Tharanga, FOUR, easy pickings for Tharanga! The leg break is too straight and allows him to sweep it. Gets it away very fine down the leg side and Bumrah who was squarer at fine leg gave up the chase early

4

Pandya to Samarawickrama, FOUR, sublime as ever from Samarawickrama! Just pure timing and placement. Short and wide, he doesn't bother to smash it away, just guides it with an open bat face. Gets it well wide of third man

W

to Samarawickrama, out Caught by Dhawan!! There's the wicket India were looking for. Not surprisingly, it's a spinner who provides it. Lovely leg break that induces Samarawickrama into the drive. Not quite there in terms of the length but he decides to go aerial inside out. Slices it high towards sweeper cover where Dhawan takes an easy catch. is pumped, so are his mates. The hosts needed this badly as the partnership was brimming in confidence. Also go to say that the spinners were making things happen right from the time they came on, so this wasn't entirely unexpected. Samarawickrama fails to convert a good start but the partnership has given the Lankans a solid platform. Samarawickrama c Dhawan b 42(57) [4s-5]

6

to Tharanga, SIX, breaks the shackles! It was dry couple of overs for the Lankans and that wicket had probably dampened the scoring a bit. Tharanga decides to release the pressure, sees the flight on the leg break and hits it with the spin. Clears long-on with ease, gets past 1000 ODI runs in 2017

4

Pandya to Mathews, FOUR, this is a courageous shot from Mathews. Steps down to a length ball and lofts over mid-off; bounces just inside the ropes

6

to Tharanga, SIX, he is into the 90s and in style. feeds him a tossed up ball once again. Tharanga goes with the turn and hits well over the deep mid-wicket fence

W

Yadav to Tharanga, out Stumped!! Keep the rulebook aside. This wicket belongs to one man - Dhoni. What hands. Sharp, light and brilliant. Tharanga was beaten on this tossed up delivery, wanted to drive but could not get the bat to it. Dragged his back leg a bit and the time was enough for Dhoni to take the bails off. In real time, it seemed as if Tharanga had got his leg back. But he had not. Once again Dhoni has got one wicket that was threatening. Tharanga st Dhoni b Yadav 95(82) [4s-12 6s-3]

4

Yadav to Dickwella, FOUR, goes for the sweep straightaway; connects well and sends it racing through backward square leg

4

Yadav to Dickwella, FOUR, smart from Dickwella. Waits for the ball and helps it with a dab past the slip fielder. A dive at third man is good for the cameras but does not get the ball back in play. Pandya was the man there

W

Yadav to Dickwella, out Caught by Shreyas Iyer!! It's one thing to play shots, it's another to be completely unmindful of the field and poking it straight to the fielder. Turns outside off and Dickwella waits, uses the turn and plays the perfect coach - poking it straight to the man at slip. What a sorry wicket this. Sri Lanka have lost the second in the over. Are they treading a familiar path here? Dickwella c Shreyas Iyer b Yadav 8(4) [4s-2]

4

to Mathews, FOUR, dances out and thumps the ball down the ground past the bowler for a four. That was a statement which was long due from the former skipper. Broken the shackles?

W

to Mathews, out Bowled!! Any budding leggies out there? You have to watch this. That was a rippah of a delivery!! The ball landed on leg, turned away, the batsman tried to play for the turn but was beaten neck and crop for the sticks to be disturbed. India are back in this big time. pumps his fist in the air as he knows he has bowled a majestic delivery to get rid of Lanka's best bet in the death overs. Vizag erupted as well. Mathews b 17(28) [4s-2]

W

to Perera, out Lbw!! Perera was clearly foxed by the turn here. Did not read it at all and was playing for a googly perhaps, wanting to cut it off the back foot. The ball turned in sharply to beat the blade and hit him on the back leg. The only concern was Perera's height but with the impact being on the back leg, even that doubt was not strong to deny India another wicket. Perera lbw b 6(6)

4

to Pathirana, FOUR, googly and gets the better of Pathirana, he pokes the edge through a vacant slip cordon. Runs to the third man fence

OT

to Pathirana, no run, has missed a run-out. Pathirana poked towards point. Karthik got low to his left and collected the ball to create doubt in Pathirana's mind. Gunaratne was almost at a hugging distance from his partner, but had to go back. A decent throw came to but the ball just bounced out of his hands, denying India an easy run-out

W

Pandya to Pathirana, out Caught by Chahal!! This has become a disease now - to try the release shot and perish. Innocuous length ball and Pathirana tries to go over mid-on. Does not get enough bat to it, and miscues over Chahal, who backtracks while keeping his eyes on the ball. Takes it with ease in the end. ]Pathirana c Chahal b Pandya 7(12) [4s-1]

W

Yadav to Dananjaya, out Bowled!! This is a horrible shot from Dananjaya. He wanted to sweep it fine, more of a lap. Chose the wrong ball to do it, was too full and it turned past the leg to hit the off-stump. India are overjoyed but Dananjaya will do well to go back and assess as to what he did wrong there. Absolutely a mockery of a shot this. Dananjaya b Yadav 1(4)

W

Pandya to Lakmal, out Lbw!! Lakmal speaks with Gunaratne and decides to walk. Sri Lanka had a review up their sleeves but Lakmal did not use it and rightly so. No bat there. The ball came in off the deck and beat the blade which followed the wrong line. Was hit on the front leg but in line with the stumps. Would have gone on to hit the stumps. Lakmal lbw b Pandya 1(2)

W

to Gunaratne, out Caught by Dhoni!! That's the end of Gunaratne. Tried to run it down to third man, got a thick edge and Dhoni was ready to move to his right and grab it. Sri Lanka finish with 215 on the board. Gunaratne c Dhoni b 17(51)
