to Tharanga, FOUR, the idea was to make him drive away from the body but what Tharanga did well was open his body sideways. So was in control of this square drive, placed past the diving point fielder

W

to Gunathilaka, out Caught by Dhoni!! Ripleys .. Exposes his stumps by backing away - you read that right - and throws his arms at the ball. Thin edge to the keeper. There was no need to do that. What did well was to stick to the original line and not follow the batsman down leg, like how you would in the death over to cramp him for room. Gunathilaka c Dhoni b 1(11)

4

to Tharanga, FOUR, nicely played. Square-drives it between the two fielders guarding the point region. Nice stride, opened torso and the body leaning into th shot. Perfect

4

to Tharanga, FOUR, inswinging yorker on leg-stump and this finds a way to the fine leg fence. Some toe-end on this - enough to run to the fence. This is so unfair but has himself to blame

W

to Thirimanne, out Bowled!! Chopped on. They're checking the front foot but looks fine. The slowmo replays seem to be hindered on both the side-on angles, but the stump cam suggested some part of Bhuvi's boot behind the line, so the original decision on the field will stay. This wasn't very well played by Thirimanne, who despite everything that's transpired has looked fine in his short stint. Went back to play the ball but was cramped for room, which is what elicited an inside edge that crashed into the stumps. That's the price you pay for being chained in the crease. Thirimanne b 0(3)

4

to Tharanga, FOUR, gets the room to free his arms - there's natural width with 's angle across the batsman, too - and Tharanga slashes it behind point. The two fielders at the point region, as a result, come closer together

4

to Tharanga, FOUR, good hit. Picks it off the pads and chips it over the leg-side infield. Takes full toll of 's compensatory line on the pads

4

to Tharanga, FOUR, slower loopy yorker length delivery down lkeg and Tharanga justtttt gets some toe-end. Another good ball that runs to the fine leg fence. He's having an assortment of a day, is

4

to Tharanga, FOUR, Kuldeep gives the chase up from mid-off. Nicely driven. Placed it wide of the fielder and picked the right one

4

Pandya to Tharanga, FOUR, he's played that away from his body but if you can play like that, play away from your body. Extends his arms and softens the ball wide of extra cover. Lovely timing

4

Pandya to Tharanga, FOUR, and again. Brings up Sri Lanka's fifty with a pristine drive. Slight weight transfer and then timing that away. Peppering the cover region with his timing. This is such good batting on a track that's flattening out

4

Pandya to Tharanga, FOUR, stylish one-legged swivel and he clears mid-wicket with this. Half-cooked back of a length ball that sits up from Pandya

W

Pandya to Tharanga, out Caught by Dhawan!! Tharanga has to go. An edge off Bhuvneshwar didn't carry last over but this one does. Dhawan juggles it at first slip before getting hold of it, thanks to the reflexes. Pandya gets the length right here: not too full and not too short. Gets the ball wobbling away from a straightish line, fogging Tharanga's footwork into a muddle and drawing an outside edge to the keeper. End of an innings that's nearly won it for Sri Lanka. Now for the rest of the team to just chip in. Tharanga c Dhawan b Pandya 49(46) [4s-10]

4

to Dickwella, FOUR, that's what he brings. There's a catching mid-wicket but Dickwella disparagingly picked this up over the fielder there. Such an easy sight on the eyes. More like that, Dickwella!

4

Pandya to Mathews, FOUR, Pandya hits the 140ks mark and finds himself gloriously driven through the on-side. Comes down the track and presents the full face of the bat

4

to Mathews, FOUR, a 130kph short sitter. The pitch steals away some more of the zip. Mathews though gets tall, on top of the bounce and goes flat-batted. Smoking it through mid-wicket

4

to Mathews, FOUR, 138kph, the wheels falling off here. Grants width, grants a punching length, grants pace. Piled on, through the line, through the covers

4

Pandya to Dickwella, FOUR, the luck refusing to switch sides too. Hard hands, the lack of width and an inside edge. Dickwella doesn't resist, but the feet doesn't move. And Dhoni's dive doesn't look enough

4

to Mathews, FOUR, sums it up. They've given up. Mathews crashes at the width, carving it over point, and a running Bhuvi from the fine side barely bends. Lets it burst through

4

to Dickwella, FOUR, a friendly sitter on the hips. Dickwella quickly gets into the Natraj pose, and while he's in the air, rolls his wrists on the ball to swat it away behind square

4

Pandya to Dickwella, FOUR, okay he's taken it upon himself to finish it off in this over. Juicy width out here, long hands, all free, and goes uppish creaming it over cover

4

Pandya to Dickwella, FOUR, oh yes. Too straight, and Dickwella doesn't believe in keeping things down. Picks it up, under it, and whips it over mid-wicket. Five needed now

4

to Mathews, FOUR, there it is. All style. Mathews started it with the ball, finishes it with the bat. It's in the form of a spanking straight drive. Mid-off doesn't even bother, instead walks over to shake hands

W

to Dhawan, out Lbw!! Loud shout for LBW and Sri Lanka want to use their review. Simon Fry shook his head almost immediately. Where did it pitch? Front-foot is fine and no bat is involved, Ultra Edge confirms it. Three REDS, Dhawan is OUT. Hush around the stadium as Dhawan departs for a duck. Excellent review from Thisara, he was goaded into doing it by and the ex-captain has been proven right. Good delivery as well, he followed the awayswingers with one that nipped back in after pitching around off, Dhawan was shuffling across on the flick, the bat came at an angle and was beaten on the inside edge, rapped adjacent to middle and the ball was smashing the stumps. Dream start for Sri Lanka. Dhawan lbw b 0(6)

W

to Rohit, out Caught by Dickwella!! Loud shout for a caught behind and Sri Lanka will review once again. Dickwella was very confident, wasn't so sure. It's a fair delivery and the ball is very close to the bat. There's a spike on the Ultra Edge when the ball went past the bat, the original decision will be changed and Rohit is OUT. Another excellent call from the Sri Lankans, they are on fire at the moment. Lovely probing line from , shortens his length and straightens a tad, Rohit was prodding forward in defence, the ball grazed the outside edge and Dickwella held on. He was confident and asked his captain to review. Thisara does so and Rohit will have to walk back to the hut. Rohit c Dickwella b 2(13)

4

to Shreyas Iyer, FOUR, lovely, the crowd find their voice for the first time in the match, length ball on Shreyas's pads, he gets inside the line and clips it to the right of mid-wicket, beat the diving fielder and rolls away to the fence

W

to Karthik, out Lbw!! Karthik has been given OUT LBW. He's walking, no, he has a second thought and wants a review, time up, says the umpire and sends him on his way. Good call from Karthik not to review, although, it wouldn't have costed India as replays show that it was umpire's call on hitting the stumps. India are in deep trouble now and Karthik's misery has been brought to an end. Superbly set-up once again from , he followed a series of awayswingers with one that jagged back in, Karthik was caught in his crease, ended up playing all around the ball and is beaten on the inside edge. Thudded into the pads, in front of middle and leg, Hawk-Eye says it was hitting the top of leg-stump. Karthik lbw b 0(18)

W

to Manish Pandey, out Caught by Mathews!! is on fire and the Indians are clueless at the moment. Another lovely in-dipper, this one kept coming back at the right-hander before straightening, Manish was in no man's land as he poked half-forward, played with a closed face, gets the edge and it's swallowed by Mathews at first slip. India have been tested against quality seam and swing bowling, I am afraid, at the moment they are batting like clueless zombies. Manish Pandey c Mathews b 2(15)

W

to Shreyas Iyer, out Bowled!! Chopped on! This was coming, Shreyas was not getting anywhere close to the pitch, another shallow waft and he hears the sound of timber. India have lost half-their-side and are in dire straits at the moment. Short of a good length and holding its line outside off, Shreyas's was looking to cut, once again the feet went nowhere, the hands went searching for the ball, all he managed was a big inside edge, clatters into the off-stump. Shreyas Iyer b 9(27) [4s-1]

4

to Hardik Pandya, FOUR, edged and four, another batsman playing a ball with no feet movement, Hardik Pandya is lucky that the edge flew wide of second slip, full and wide of off, looking to lure Pandya into the drive, he went with hard hands and gets lucky

4

to Hardik Pandya, FOUR, lovely shot, relief for the Indian batsmen, floaty half-volley outside off, Pandya leans forward and drives it in the gap past cover-point, beats the fielder and rolls away to the fence, should give some confidence to the batsman

W

to Hardik Pandya, out Caught by Mathews!! Another nothing shot and India sink further. This is poor cricket from Pandya, not sure what his intentions were, he took a step down the track and then decided to let the ball go. In doing so, he was right behind the line of the delivery, this was a back of a length delivery just outside off, the ball caught the toe-edge and Mathews did the rest at first slip. Second wicket for and Sri Lanka are all over the Indians. Hardik Pandya c Mathews b 10(10) [4s-2]

OT

to Bhuvneshwar, no run, appeal for LBW and Sri Lanka will review. It's a fair delivery, might have been an inside edge. The UltraEdge will confirm it, umpire reckons it's pad first. Off to the Hawk-Eye and it's umpire's call on hitting the stumps. Sri Lanka will not lose their review. was convinced and pushed his captain at reviewing, on a good length and shaping back into the right-hander, Bhuvneshwar was half-cock as he prodded forward, jammed his bat and pad together, the impact was around middle and leg, would have been just clipping the top of leg-stump

W

to Bhuvneshwar, out Caught by Dickwella!! Edged and caught! Bhuvneshwar can't be blamed for this dismissal though, just too good for the number eight batsman. is on a roll and he has picked up his fourth wicket. Lovely, lovely stuff from the medium-pacer, short of a good length and kept coming back in, Bhuvneshwar was looking to defend, but the ball just about held its line at the last moment, opened up the batsman a bit, the edge was found and Dickwella is safe behind the stumps. Bhuvneshwar c Dickwella b 0(5)

OT

to Dhoni, no run, again a little jog down the track and the bowler thudded the pads with an in-dipper. The batsman missed the clip. They have taken the review here. An appeal for LBW. He was well down the track when he was pinged on the pad. It looks close though. NO BAT. Hitting wickets - umpire's call. Dhoni survives. Indian hang in by the skin of the teeth. Now they want to review the run-out as there was a direct hit. Dhoni got his bat down in time. Safe there as well. The fact that he danced down the track, that saved him

4

to Dhoni, FOUR, shot of the day? Has to be. We have not seen many today. Steps out, takes it on the top of the bounce and screams the drive between cover and mid-off for a four. Loud cheers greet the shot

4

to Kuldeep Yadav, FOUR, lovely from the young man. Gets the bat down at an angle and just placed it between mid-on and mid-wicket for a four. That was on a length and he just touched it

4

to Kuldeep Yadav, FOUR, no one at third slip? Why is that? The ball takes the edge as the bowler changed his angle to round the wicket. The batsman played it with soft hands and the ball goes through the third slip region and into the fence. India will take anything..

4

to Dhoni, FOUR, the edges are doing it for the moment. Dances out, goes for the whirlwind of a shot but manages to inside edge it and the ball goes past the sticks and into the fine leg fence for a four

4

to Dhoni, FOUR, short ball, down leg, pulled away. Not timed but that will do. India will take anything as they go past 54! The crowd erupts. Bad ball, not the desired shot as he tried to hit it square but the ball went fine for the desired result to be produced

4

to Kuldeep Yadav, FOUR, squeezes the ball out, square of the wicket, past point and it screeches across the turf for another four. This man can bat. The spectators are finding their voices. But for how long? It was a full ball, almost a yorker just outside off and the batsman got his willow down to just steer it away

4

to Dhoni, FOUR, short, wide, vintage Dhoni cuts it away. Did not bother keeping it down and it goes over point for a four. Bad ball and was put away with elan and ease

4

to Kuldeep Yadav, FOUR, this is poor! Very very poor from the skipper. He is letting it go. Bad ball down leg. Just a guided tickle and that was enough. The man at fine leg put in the slide but in vain. India scoring freely now

W

to Kuldeep Yadav, out Stumped!! India lose number 8. The batsman tried to push forward and defend but the ball spun past his edge. The keeper whipped the bails off in a flash and the batsman was unmindful of the fact that his back foot was on the line and not behind it. The third umpire had a look at it from all the angles possible and signalled the marching orders for Kuldeep Yadav. Should MS have taken that single? Kuldeep Yadav st Dickwella b 19(25) [4s-4]

4

to Dhoni, FOUR, full toss and it goes to the fence. The big wind up, takes the inside edge and goes past his sticks for a four. Dhoni and India will take all of this

4

to Dhoni, FOUR, chips down the track and powerfully clips the ball away between mid-wicket and square leg. That was precise from the veteran. India go past their lowest score in India, which was 78!

4

to Dhoni, FOUR, stays back and swords the ball away this time. The man at sweeper cover puts in the dive but was still unable to get it. The bowler dropped it slightly short and the batsman pounced on it

OT

to Bumrah, no run, arm ball went through and caught the batsman napping on the back leg. But the impact was outside off and the batsman survives. Dhoni took the review straightaway and to the crowd's delight, Bumrah survived

W

to Bumrah, out Bowled!! Looks to be too smart and misses the straight flighted ball. India lose number 9. Dhoni is not a happy man. He failed to take a single and has to pay for it. That was a nothing shot as he tried to drop kick the ball away without getting in line with the sticks. Can India see a triple digit score? Looks tough. Three balls for Chahal. Bumrah b 0(15)

6

to Dhoni, SIX, definition of stand and deliver. Just watch this. Hardly any backlift. But he powers this length ball over mid-off for a sixer. That was just outside off and MS just stroked it for it to just land over the ropes

4

to Dhoni, FOUR, the Dhoni legend rolls along. That was a full toss and he timed the drive through the covers for a four. The team management applauds. A thankless fifty from the former skipper but far from being enough. He came in at 16/4 and has been there still trying to help the scorecard

6

to Dhoni, SIX, into the second tier! Charged out and clobbered it over the cow corner for a maximum. The walk down the track ensured he got under it

4

to Dhoni, FOUR, flighted ball and smacked down the ground. He won't get the desired single but a four it is. The loopy ball and MS muscled it with a lot of power to get it past the bowler. The field was in and it was an easy passage to the fence

4

to Dhoni, FOUR, short ball outside off and has been carved away by MS. Past point and it has gone away to the fence in a jiffy

W

to Dhoni, out Caught by Gunathilaka!! The fun is over. Reality bites. India bowled out for 112. Dhoni trying to go big and ended up slicing it for the man at sweeper cover to take it. The ball was in his court but he ended up trying to hit it too hard for the ball to peel away off the outer half of the bat and into the safe hands of the man at sweeper cover. Dhoni c Gunathilaka b 65(87) [4s-10 6s-2]
