commentary

There goes the first ODI to the Proteas. In spite of the 2-0 sweep in the Tests, only a diehard Sri Lankan fan would have predicted a different result. The next stop is Centurion, where the game will be played under lights. Can the Lankans find some spark and try and exploit the inexperienced middle order? Or will the home side repeat its performance? Join us on Wednesday, March 6, 2019, at 1 pm local (1100 GMT) for all the action from the second ODI. ADIOS! TAKE CARE!

Victorious South African skipper, Faf du Plessis, is AWARDED THE MAN OF THE MATCH. Says that the Proteas played really well and the toss was very important. Stresses that it is very difficult to gauge the Wanderers wicket and is particularly satisfied with the way they played the spinners. On the bowling, Faf says that if the seamers strike early, it becomes easier for Imran Tahir to run through the middle order which is exactly what transpired today. Is happy with the fact that the batsmen finished off the chase comfortably. Stresses further on Tahir that he loves bowling to new batsmen as they struggle to pick him. On de Kock, Faf says that it is great for South Africa that he is playing well because if he scores at the rate at which he normally scores, he puts the opposition under pressure.

Sri Lankan skipper, Lasith Malinga, says that the Lankans lost a couple of wickets at a crucial time in the middle overs, which became difficult to handle as the pitch was slow. Admits that the team needs to adjust to the conditions as soon as possible. On the batsmen not getting the starts, Malinga says that an analysis needs to be made on who is the set batsman and adds that he needs to finish the game. On the improvement for the second match, Lasith says that roles need to be defined and batsmen need to finish off innings.

Earlier in the day, Faf du Plessis elected to bowl on what looked like a slower wicket, expected to quicken up as the game progresses. That is exactly what transpired. Sri Lanka huffed and puffed to 231, thanks to two decent stands worth 170 in total, but nothing from the rest. Lungi Ngidi rocked them at the top while Imran Tahir took care of the middle overs. The visitors were looking good at 195/4 but then lost their way totally. In the afternoon, the pitch seemed to ease out for batting and the home side had it easy. Please stay tuned for the presentation...

Nothing much to write about the Lankan bowling. Vishwa Fernando struck in his very first over, dismissing Hendricks and at that point of time, it seemed that Sri Lanka would fight. But some poor bowling and very poor fielding let the team down badly. They struggled to put any sort of pressure on the Proteas and succumbed easily.

May be, things could have been different had du Plessis' catch been taken on 32 by Lakshan Sandakan. But barring that moment, the Proteas were always in control. Faf started the counter-attack, with de Kock slowly following up and then overtaking his skipper. The wicket-keeper batsman was unlucky to miss out on his ton but Faf ensured that he got to his milestone. Rassie van der Dussen then got some decent batting practice in the middle.

Comfortable win for the Saffas. The only point in time when they did look in trouble was when Reeza Hendricks was dismissed early. But the 136-run stand between de Kock and du Plessis paved the way for the win.

DRINKS! Almost there, are South Africa. Just a matter of when. 48 needed at around 2.5 an over. Nothing much in the pitch and Faf is leading from the front. His century seems to be the only talking point for now. Can Sri Lanka spark a collapse of sorts to get something for themselves from the game?

L Malinga to du Plessis, FOUR! Duck-hook, top edge, boundary! Not in control at all. A short ball, on middle, du Plessis gets down, attempts to paddle, but the length is not that full. He almost has his eyes shut but then the momentum makes him go through with the shot. So he plays what looks like a paddle cum hook, mistimes it in the air but beats fine leg.

L Sandakan to du Plessis, Well. That is interesting. Down the leg side, Faf gets across to flick but seems to miss it. The ball goes off de Kock's pads towards short fine leg and the batsmen take a single. Now, to the naked eye, that seems a wide but the umpire signals a leg bye. Would love to see the replays...

A Dananjaya to de Kock, OUT! LBW! The review does not save de Kock. It is not even clipping, it is HITTING the stumps, which means Quinton takes the review along with him. A wicket at last for Sri Lanka. Is it too late? Perhaps. A decent delivery, landing a shade short than full. QdK went back to flick it to the leg side but the ball spun and then straightened a little. Beat the bat and rapped de Kock on the front pad. Umpire Kettleborough raised his finger and de Kock had a chat with du Plessis, who signalled for the review. Three reds on the Hawk Eye with the ball projected to hit the leg stump. No century for de Kock then but end of a wonderful 136-run stand. Should be enough to take the Proteas to the finish line. Just 82 more needed from 160 balls.

De Kock has been adjudged LBW! He looks a bit distraught, walks to his skipper and receives some support with a signal for the review from Faf. Looks close.

L Malinga to de Kock, FOUR! Poor effort in the field! Thisara Perera - no boundaries with the bat today but has conceded one in the field now. Fill and around middle, de Kock looks to go over mid on but gets more height than distance. He just seems to have enough on it as Thisara Perera cannot get to the ball running back. Now comes the main part. The ball lands in front of him, he tries to take it on the bounce but then, to his horror, it hits his right leg and rolls down into the fence!

L Sandakan to du Plessis, Huge shout for LBW! Turned down! Looks pretty safe but Sri Lanka are taking a review. Was it pad first? Let us see. Here comes the replay. Tossed up around middle, Faf looks to defend and oops... it seems like he has been hit on the pad but off the inside edge. Yes. Snickometer confirms. Sri Lanka lose a review. It seemed not out to the naked eye with the only difference that Faf seemed to have blocked it.

A Dananjaya to de Kock, FOUR! A streaky one though. Dananjaya tosses it up around middle and leg, further turning down, de Kock kneels to sweep but fails to middle his shot. It takes the under edge of his bat and hurries wide of the keeper to the fine leg fence.

Spin time! Akila Dananjaya is brought into the attack by Lasith Malinga from the end where he was bowling. Under 200 needed off little over 250 balls.

V Fernando to R Hendricks, OUT! Hendricks departs without troubling the scorers much. This is what we are used to seeing from Vishwa Fernando. He gets his deliveries to swing around by throwing it up in the half of the batsman. He serves a full delivery just outside off and the ball curls back in a shade off the seam. Hendricks, minus any footwork, pushes at it tamely and gets a thick inside edge behind. Dickwella reacts quickly to his left and grabs a safe catch by immediately going down low. Early blow to South Africa in their run chase and Vishwa is all pumped up.

V Fernando to de Kock, FOUR! Fine shot! Malinga tries to spear in a yorker but de Kock leans forward and across to take it on the full. After all that it's all too easy to flick it in the gap at mid-wicket. Another boundary for him and Quinton is up and running in this chase.

L Malinga to R Hendricks, APPEAL FOR CAUGHT BEHIND! NOT OUT! Strangely, no review taken. That was a confident appeal but the moment the umpire turned it down, Malinga, like an obedient child, accepted the decision. Dickwella argued with him as to take the review but first Malinga shook his head. Then he asked the keeper a few questions before eventually turning his back on him. Then, Dhananjaya de Silva was seen yelling on someone. Now, coming to the delivery. It was a peach. On a good length and on off, Hendricks looked to defend but the away movement completed squared him up in his stance. Then, there is a noise heard as it went past the batsman. Ultra Edge shows that it hit the thigh pad and not the bat. Very smart and sensible from the Sri Lankan captain.
