4

to Heino Kuhn, FOUR, edged and four. Peach of a delivery. You can't play the flick when the ball is nibbling around. Full delivery on off, Kuhn attempts the flick and the outswinger takes the edge, flies right between third slip and gully

4

to Elgar, FOUR, lovely shot! Just a gentle push and even though got a fingertip to it, the ball reaced the boundary rope. Fuller and on off, Elgar eases it down the wicket with a straight bat. Timed it beautifully

W

to Elgar, out Caught by Bairstow!! Elgar has a look at the surface, shakes his head and walks off. First one down. Back of a length in the channel around off, Elgar has to play as the line is on off, the ball holds its line leaving the batsman squared up and taking the edge, carries nicely to Bairstow, who makes no mistake. Not much Elgar could have done there. Beaut of a delivery from and he's pumped up. Elgar c Bairstow b 5(13) [4s-1]

OT

to Heino Kuhn, no run, edges it to the keeper. Or does he? Keeper and slips went up in unison, but umpire Dharmasena didn't hear anything. Root reviews. A pearler from to begin with, draws Kuhn forward and swings away late while kicking off the deck. The ball is ever so close to the shoulder of the bat, however, Ultra-Edge shows nothing. Onfield call has to be upheld

W

to Heino Kuhn, out Caught by Cook!! Not very good from Kuhn. He's gone following after the swing with his hands, which leads to that inevitable edge. Back of a length, swinging away outside off, the ball carries comfortably to Cook at first slip. He didn't look the most convincing out there, did Kuhn, and now has to depart. Heino Kuhn c Cook b 11(29) [4s-1]

4

to Bavuma, FOUR, squirted away off a thick edge past gully. A marked improvement from the previous ball, floats it up around off and then curls it away late. Bavuma has already been tempted into driving the ball and the swing opens him up. Died pretty quickly off the edge though

4

Ali to Amla, FOUR, that's short enough for Amla to sit back on it before whipping it with the turn through mid-wicket. Enough time on the back foot to line up the turn

W

to Bavuma, out Caught by Bairstow!! We have a review off the final ball before lunch. himself didn't look very keen but everyone in the cordon went up immediately. Root blows his cheeks and signals the T. And what a review this is. Huge spike on Ulta-Edge draws big cheers from the crowd here at OT. Apparently it was Broad, fielding at mid-on, who was convinced of a nick. Back of a length delivery outside off, Bavuma plays away from the body as he looks to defend and just gets a feather through to Bairstow. Bavuma c Bairstow b 12(32) [4s-1]

4

Ali to Amla, FOUR, and again. He plays the reverse sweep to a delivery that is very full, connects and leaves Stokes, who was anticipating and moving to his right wrongfooted. The ball races to the third man fence

4

to Amla, FOUR, good length ball outside off, Amla drives away from the body, he had the space to free his arms and he ensured that the square drive was played wide of the man at point. should not worry about it

4

to Amla, FOUR, class shot! Nothing much wrong with the delivery and that is why should feel he has a chance. Fullish and outside off, Amla drives through extra cover, with his weight leaning into the shot. The ball scurries to the fence

4

to Amla, FOUR, that was a hit-me ball and Amla obliges. Overpitched delivery close to off, Amla does not try to smash the leather off the ball, creams it past mid-off and holds the pose for the cameras. Costly over from , releases some of the pressure that was being built

4

Ali to Amla, FOUR, he is favouring the reverse sweep. That is one way to counter the rough outside off. Amla waits for the ball to do its bit and brings the bat down right on top of the ball, Stokes once again is wrongfooted

4

to du Plessis, FOUR, flashed and flashed hard. du Plessis saw the length short and the line outside off, he threw the kitchen sink at it and the outside edge flew over the man at gully

4

to Amla, FOUR, that is the fourth drive Amla has scored off in this spell. Half volley just outside off, Amla's short bat lift allowed him to meet the ball at the right time and he caressed it wide of mid-off. Anderson gives a valiant chase

4

Ali to Amla, byes, FOUR, turn and bounce, Bairstow is beaten. Starts from off and ends up down leg, Amla gets inside the line and leaves, Bairstow blinded by the batsman does not move across quickly to glove it

4

to du Plessis, FOUR, shot of the day, at least for me. Amla has played some gorgeous drives, but this was top drawer from the South African skipper. The full delivery angled in, du Plessis leans forward, presents the full face of the bat and on-drives it past mid-on. Everything right about that shot - the balance, timing and placement

4

to Amla, FOUR, how well is that timed? Back of a length on off, Amla jumps across and whips it off his pads, it just looked like a tuck which was good enough for a couple, but the ball kept going away from the chasing mid-wicket fielder

4

to Amla, FOUR, fifty for Amla. Raise of the bat to acknowledge the applause from the crowd. He knows that his job is not even half done. Short delivery drifting down leg, Amla helps it along the way with a pull. Fine leg is square and the ball reached the rope

4

to du Plessis, FOUR, the runs are starting to flow. On a length and nipping in, du Plessis leans across to flick and squirts it off a thickish inside edge to fine leg. Once again the fielder is square and had no chance

4

to du Plessis, FOUR, this time he nails it. Full delivery outside off, du Plessis strides forward and drives through extra cover. Anderson gives up the chase quite early. Right off the middle

4

to Amla, FOUR, awful delivery, England have been guilty of too many of these in this session. Half-volley down the leg-side, just helped along its way to the fine leg boundary

4

to Amla, FOUR, jumps onto the back foot and punches the ball through point. The sun is out now and conditions haven't been much better to bat through the entire match. Right on top of the bounce is Amla

4

to Amla, FOUR, oh superb. Even better than the previous one in this over. Short of length just outside off, this time Amla punches it well in front of square through the off-side. Don't bother running

4

Ali to Amla, FOUR, cut away through point for four to bring up the 100-run partnership. Another hour of this and things might get interesting

4

to du Plessis, FOUR, there's no one at mid-off and once overpitches, it's a freebie for du Plessis. He pushes it through the gap for four

6

Ali to Amla, SIX, waltzes down to the pitch of the ball and launches Ali straight back for six. Ali tried bowling it wide of off, but Amla dragged him all the same

4

to du Plessis, FOUR, that's been punched right through 's hands for four. It flew off du Plessis's bat, hardly gave any time for the bowler to react. Harsh to call it a dropped chance

W

Ali to Amla, out Lbw!! Oh that's real close. He's playing off the back foot, and has missed the ball in front of off. Not out is the call from Dharmasena, but England have to review this, surely. Yes. Turning in from outside off, Amla shuffles across to whip it away backward of square but misses the ball. Or does he? There's a slight murmur on Ultra-Edge, however, as the third umpire observes, there's a gap between bat and ball. It's three reds on ball-tracking. Big, big wicket for England. If South Africa were going to do it, this was probably the partnership. Amla lbw b Ali 83(159) [4s-13 6s-1]

4

Ali to du Plessis, FOUR, bottom-handed whip wide of mid-on, just about beats a diving Joe Root at mid-on to bring up his half-century! Fighting knock from the skipper. The ball was too full from Ali

W

Ali to de Kock, out Caught by Cook!! Ali chipping in with big wickets through the middle. Draws out a flamboyant drive from de Kock by tossing it up, and then gets the edge with some turn. Oh this is a good catch from Cook at gully. It won't be talked about much after some of Stokes's earlier efforts, but he's bent down sharply to snaffle the fizzing edge from de Kock. de Kock c Cook b Ali 1(7)

W

Ali to Theunis de Bruyn, out Caught by Stokes!! Ali is doing it for England. What a spell this is. Three wickets in just 11 balls to leave South Africa on their knees. It's another good slip catch, this one. Going on with the arm outside off, de Bruyn plays back to it and plays inside the line expecting some turn. The edge is dying on Stokes, but geez, it's a simple one by his standards. Theunis de Bruyn c Stokes b Ali 0(2)

4

to du Plessis, FOUR, dances down and drags the ball through mid-on. He converted it into an overpitched delivery and then muscled it away

W

to du Plessis, out Caught by Bairstow!! End of Faf du Plessis and so are the hopes of South Africa if they had any. Shocking from FAF having played so well till now. Throws his bat at a short and wide delivery outside off and gets a thick outside edge through to the keeper. England rejoice. The crowd cheer. du Plessis c Bairstow b 61(85) [4s-8]

4

to Maharaj, FOUR, short and wide outside off, Maharaj cuts it past the diving backward point and collects four

4

Ali to Maharaj, FOUR, now he gets one away. Takes the aerial route and collects four. The ball bounces a couple of times and goes over the long-off boundary

W

to Rabada, out Caught by Westley!! The change of angle does the trick for . A full delivery outside off, Rabada drives it uppishly with no feet whatsoever and picks cover-point to perfection. Westley leaps to his right and takes a smart catch. Rabada c Westley b 1(15)

6

Ali to Maharaj, SIX, Maharaj is looking to play some shots now. Nice swing of the bat. Gets to the pitch of the ball and smokes it over long-on. Well over the boundary rope for a maximum

W

Ali to Morne Morkel, out Caught by Root!! Taken at mid-off. Morkel couldn't get the elevation he wanted and picks Root first ball. Tried to get under the tossed up delivery and lift it for a boundary. Couldn't do so and South Africa are nine down. Morne Morkel c Root b Ali 0(1)

W

Ali to Olivier, out Caught by Stokes!! Ali seals his five-for to wrap up the win for England. Flighted outside off, going on with the arm, and takes the edge to slip. It's all over at Old Trafford. Olivier c Stokes b Ali 0(1)

4

Morkel to Cook, leg byes, FOUR, Morkel slips another down the leg-side, this time Cook gets some pad on the way and the ball rolls down to fine leg fence. There's an appeal for LBW, a desperate one though. Would have missed leg-stump by a long way

4

Morkel to Cook, FOUR, Morkel follows it up with a poor delivery on the pads, Cook picks it up off the toes and clips it to deep mid-wicket to get off the mark

4

Morkel to Cook, FOUR, Morkel finds the outside edge, but Cook had it covered. He plays it with soft hands and the ball runs down to third man fence

D

to Jennings, no run, dropped! Elgar the man, who puts it down. He goes airborne to his left and gets both hands to the ball, but fails to hold on to it. Jennings stays put in the crease and jabs hard at the length ball on off. The edge flies to the left of third slip and falls to ground

W

Morkel to Cook, out Caught by Theunis de Bruyn!! Morkel deserves this wicket. He kept Cook busy with the probing line outside off. This time it was fuller drawing Cook forward. The ball leaves the left-hander catching the outside edge and flies towards gully at a good height. de Bruyn had it covered and takes a neat catch. Cook c Theunis de Bruyn b Morkel 10(19) [4s-2]

4

Morkel to Westley, FOUR, width on offer, Westley drives away from the body, but gets a good result as the ball races away wide of backward point. Gets off the mark with a boundary

4

to Jennings, FOUR, a gift for Jennings. A juicy half-volley on the pads, Jennings flicks it to deep square leg and collects four to his name

4

Morkel to Westley, FOUR, superbly done. It's not an easy shot to play, particularly against someone with the height of Morkel. Short of length outside off, Westley gets on his toes which helps him get right on top of the bounce, and punches it through the covers

W

Morkel to Westley, out Caught by (sub)Markram!! Oh gone. Morkel strikes again, and in the same way. Full ball around off, drawing Westley into the drive and getting it to nip away a fraction. The movement causes Westley to squirt it off a thick edge straight to gully. Straight into Markram's lap. South Africa teasing a fightback. Westley c (sub)Markram b Morkel 9(18) [4s-2]

OT

to Jennings, no run, ripping in from the footmarks, Jennings pads it away. Huge appeal from , but that's way too far wide of off. Faf doesn't seem too keen. Oh wait, he's reviewed it. Well. The ball ripped in, sure, but ball-tracking still shows it to be missing off-stump by a foot. Faf shakes his head, unhappy with himself for being persuaded into the review by the bowler and keeper

4

to Jennings, FOUR, and Jennings brings out the reverse-sweep. Didn't take long, did it? It's just his second ball against . Turning in from outside off, Jennings gets it away fine for four

4

to Root, FOUR, leg-stumpish, Root swings into action once he picks up the line. Gets down on one knee and sweeps it powerfully behind square

4

to Jennings, FOUR, oh nice flow to that drive. It will make Jennings feel better. Floated up full and wide, Jennings leans onto it nicely and times it through the covers

W

to Jennings, out Caught by Amla!! Gone. That could be Jennings's Test career over for the foreseeable future as well. Soft dismissal it must be said. It was there for the cut, but he could only top-edge that to first slip's throat where Amla takes it nicely - reverse-cupped. A breakthrough right after lunch for South Africa. Replays show that Jennings was livid after getting out. Swiped at air with his bat, before walking off. Jennings c Amla b 18(63) [4s-3]

4

to Root, leg byes, FOUR, poor from . Goes leg-sidish again, takes the thigh pad of Root and runs away fine, no chance of fine leg catching that as he was too square

4

to Root, FOUR, that's a bad ball and Root doesn't miss out. Full-toss on off, Root swings it to the deep square leg fence. No-one out there and it's a boundary

W

to Malan, out Caught by Theunis de Bruyn!! takes out Malan. Always difficult for the left-hander facing with so much rough out there. Here he tries to counter that threat, by using his feet, but the length is cleverly pulled back by , so the defence results in an inside edge onto the pad and it's taken at short leg. Malan's poor run of form continues - another man who hasn't done much to preserve his place in the side for the forthcoming series'. Malan c Theunis de Bruyn b 6(15)

4

to Root, FOUR, so good with those backcuts is Root. Just a good length delivery outside off and he latched onto the width and slapped it through gully. Gave deep point no chance

4

to Stokes, byes, FOUR, the footmarks and its tricks. Pitches in those and almost rolls on the pitch, beats the under-edge and gives de Kock no chance. Runs away for four byes

4

to Stokes, FOUR, took it from the stumps and played the sweep. Connected well and beat the diving backward square leg fielder. That's a good blow by Stokes

4

to Root, FOUR, brilliant shot. Knelt down and hammered it from the rough. No-one out there at deep mid-wicket and Root spotted the chance to get a four

4

to Stokes, byes, FOUR, woah! How much has that turned. From the rough and spitting across Stokes, beats de Kock easily

4

Morkel to Root, FOUR, down leg and easy for Root, a fine leg-glance and it runs away for four. Fine leg is too square to have any chance

4

to Root, FOUR, well played. The ball was outside leg and full, Root brought the vertical-bat sweep out and got four, by getting it fine

4

Morkel to Stokes, FOUR, that's delightfully played by Stokes. Skips out and then sees it drifting into the pads, clips it away to the deep backward square leg fence

4

to Stokes, FOUR, now he connects with the reverse. Hit into the ground and wide of backward point. Saw it was outside off and then played the shot

4

to Stokes, FOUR, Stokes takes on and charges out to hoick it over mid-on's head. Didn't land in the footmarks and Stokes got the meaty part of the willow

W

to Root, out Bowled!! Chopped on. is pumped. Stayed low, Root is bowled off the bottom edge. Hits off and Root who was looking so good, is gone for 49. The bowling change has done the trick. Root shakes his head as he walks off. Again the pitch showing its tricks. Root b 49(106) [4s-6]

D

to Stokes, no run, almost a great catch by Kuhn at short mid-wicket. But it goes down. Rank drag-down by , Stokes smashed the pull and Kuhn on the leap, with two hands over his head couldn't hang on, had zero time to react, needed to stick and didn't. Still full marks for the outstanding effort

4

to Stokes, FOUR, finally the pressure is released with an edge. Right into the gap between slip and gully. Scrambled delivery across Stokes who got an edge on the defence. Split the fielders and ran away to the vacant third man fence. First run in 29 balls

W

to Stokes, out Caught by du Plessis!! Fantastic result for . Excellent reward for persistent bowling. All the pressure created in the last half hour has yielded a result. Brings the line back onto the stumps, Stokes drives on the rise and edges to the South African captain's tummy at first slip. Taken well and the fightback continues. Stokes c du Plessis b 23(54) [4s-5]

4

to Moeen Ali, FOUR, sheesh! That has kissed the off-stump on the way to the fine leg fence. Moeen Ali uncertain whether to play or leave, doesn't take the bat out the ball's line in time, so close to clipping off. is desperately unlucky

4

to Bairstow, FOUR, a gentle loosener from gets Bairstow off the mark after 25 deliveries. It was a half-volley outside off, Bairstow creams it through covers

4

to Bairstow, FOUR, bursts through the hands of Amla at short mid-wicket. Wasn't easy at all. Pull shot came right off the screws and Amla had absolutely no time to react. He was late to get his hands in position

W

to Bairstow, out Caught by Rabada!! Rabada did well to hold onto the catch. It seemed like he lost it in the background. Bairstow gets a top edge on the pull and the ball flies towards fine leg. Rabada runs in and dives forward to his right to take it well above the ground. A smile lights up on Rabada's face after the catch. Bairstow c Rabada b 10(30) [4s-2]

4

to Moeen Ali, FOUR, short and wide outside off, Moeen Ali punches it off the back foot. All timing on that. Amla gives chase only to come second

D

to Moeen Ali, no run, the outside edge goes straight in and out of the hands of Elgar. pushes one outside off, Moeen Ali played it inside the line and gets a thick outside edge to the left of Elgar at first slip, who dives forward and gets both hands under the ball. Then as he was rolling over, it pops out. Tries to catch it on the second attempt, but was in no position as he was down on his shoulders

4

to Roland-Jones, FOUR, these are useful runs for England. Roland-Jones leans onto the front foot and drills it through the covers. No chance of stopping that as the ball races away down the hill

4

to Roland-Jones, FOUR, that's a shot of a top order batsman. It was pulled so hard. The ball rockets to the fence. Roland-Jones gets early into the position and splits the gap to perfection on the on-side

4

to Moeen Ali, FOUR, loopy delivery outside off, Moeen Ali brings out the lap shot and places it fine towards fine leg. Runs down the hill

4

to Moeen Ali, FOUR, now he sweeps it in front of square. Picks it from outside off and sweeps it with the turn. There is no one in the deep to stop that

4

to Moeen Ali, FOUR, through the hands of Elgar. Moeen Ali goes for the reverse sweep and hits it fine. Elgar gets up too early and was late to bend down to stop that. Raced away to the third man fence

4

to Moeen Ali, FOUR, Moeen Ali goes inside out over cover. Had the width on offer outside off, he chips it over the in field and collects four

6

to Moeen Ali, SIX, that's been clobbered. Dances down the track and nails it into the deep mid-wicket stands

D

to Roland-Jones, 1 run, FAF has landed hard on his right shoulder. He is down on the ground. Peach of a delivery from . Gets big on Roland-Jones as he tries to keep the short ball down. The ball takes the shoulder of the bat and lobs over gully. Faf du Plessis runs back, sticks his right hand out and nearly pulled off a screamer. Huge round of applause for the effort from the OT crowd

4

to Moeen Ali, FOUR, backs it up with a short delivery. Moeen Ali is upto the challenge. Stands tall and pulls it away to the deep mid-wicket fence

6

to Moeen Ali, SIX, what a way to bring up your fifty. Skips down the track and sends it soaring over the sight screen. Bairstow catches it from the balcony and throws it back in. Moeen Ali raises his bat to the crowd and soaks in the applause

W

to Roland-Jones, out Caught by Maharaj!! South Africa finally manage to break this 57-run partnership. Not before the damage is done. A short delivery does the trick. Roland-Jones gets a leading edge on the pull and a well judged catch by Maharaj, who runs back and takes it over his head at mid-wicket. Roland-Jones c Maharaj b 11(30) [4s-2]

6

to Moeen Ali, SIX, tossed up delivery on the stumps, Moeen Ali comes down the track and thumps it over deep mid-wicket

4

to Moeen Ali, FOUR, picks the slower ball which is overpitched, and scoops the drive straight back down the ground. The lead rattling along

4

to Broad, FOUR, Broad is away. Fuller and outside off, Broad had the width to free his arms and he drives it square on the off-side. Even a sluggish outfield helps the ball to the fence

4

to Broad, leg byes, FOUR, another boundary. This time off the pad. Shortens the length a touch and gets it to nip away late, Broad is squared up and is beaten on the outside edge, the ball deflects off the back thigh, splits second slip and gully

W

Morkel to Broad, out Caught by Theunis de Bruyn!! Almost similar to Roland-Jones's first innings dismissal. Sliced to a shortish point. Broad was never going to hang around. Saw the ball pitched in his arc and went for the drive with his feet nowhere close to the ball, off the outer half of the bat and de Bruyn reacted quickly to reverse cup that. Broad c Theunis de Bruyn b Morkel 5(10) [4s-1]

4

to Moeen Ali, FOUR, not off the middle but still raced away to the fence. Good length ball and is a tad too straight, whipped with a lot of bottom hand through mid-wicket. Kuhn chases and dives, all in vain

W

Morkel to Anderson, out Caught by Theunis de Bruyn!! This was always on the cards. Like Broad, Anderson is also suspect against the short ball, Morkel does just that - targets the ribs of Anderson, he shuffles across with a jump to fend it away, the ball hits the sticker on the bat and lobs to short leg. de Bruyn almost let it pop out, but managed to cling on as the ball didn't go too far. Anderson c Theunis de Bruyn b Morkel 2(5)

W

to Elgar, out Lbw!! Gone. That's plumb. is ecstatic. It swung in beautifully to go past the bat and hit the pad at pace. Full and moved in to beat the inside edge. Three Reds and even if Elgar had reviewed it, would've been a waste. Elgar thought about it for a while, had a chat with Heino Kuhn before trudging off. What a start this is for England and . Elgar lbw b 0(3)

4

to Heino Kuhn, FOUR, overpitched and Heino Kuhn plays a nice shot to get off the mark. Flicks it wide of mid-on and it races away. Got too straight did and Kuhn put him away

4

to Heino Kuhn, FOUR, that should boost his confidence. It was short, it was wide. Heino Kuhn gets across and slaps it past point. Brings up his second boundary

4

to Amla, FOUR, dishes in a full delivery searching for some swing. Amla is onto it in a flash with a gorgeous looking cover drive

4

to Heino Kuhn, FOUR, another thick outside edge found, but the ball splits the gap between gully and backward point. Rolls away down to third man

4

to Amla, FOUR, class written all over that shot! Wasn't that full to be driving. Amla presents the full face of the bat and times it down the ground. Mid-off fielder was square and had no chance of stopping that

4

to Amla, FOUR, two in a row for Amla. He rides on the bounce and punches it past point. Two fielders give chase, but the ball had enough to dribble over the fence

4

to Amla, FOUR, that is a gift for Amla. Too straight from , Amla doesn't miss out on that. Gets inside the line and tucks it to deep square leg. Fine leg had no chance of stopping that

W

to Amla, out Caught by Bairstow!! Can you believe it? Unlucky dismissal for South Africa, but England won't complain. Amla walks across his stumps looking for the flick, instead he gets tangled down the leg-side and a straightforward catch for Bairstow. has got Amla for the third time in as many times. He walks away with a wry looking smile on his face. Amla c Bairstow b 30(35) [4s-4]

4

to Bavuma, FOUR, streaky way to get off the mark. gets it to straighten enough to catch the outside edge, but Bavuma had it covered. Played it with soft hands and the ball rolls down to third man for a boundary

OT

to Bavuma, no run, a review for caught behind down the leg. Given not out on field. Front foot is fine, UltraEdge shows no spike and the TV umpire asks Kumar Dharmasena to stay with his decision. Bavuma gets tangled down the leg-side trying to flick. The ball clips the thigh pad and lands in the hands of Bairstow. He knew it straightaway and held his ground. England waste a review

OT

to Heino Kuhn, 1 run, oh that's close! That was out if Anderson had hit. Not smart running, or calling. Full ball outside off, Kuhn drives handsomely to the left of mid-off where Anderson, still pretty swift for his age, collects the ball and spins around to fire the throw in at the non-striker's end. He surprised Kuhn there

4

to Bavuma, FOUR, flicked away off the pads for four. An erroneous over from so far. He's strayed a bit in line and length

W

Ali to Heino Kuhn, out Caught by Stokes!! Oh what a good low catch at slip from Stokes. Absolutely brilliant reflexes. Kuhn chases a flighted ball outside off, looking to drive it through the covers, and gets a thick edge. The ball is travelling quickly and is dying in front of Stokes. But he bends down low and plucks it just off the ground. What a crazy half-an-over we've had. Heino Kuhn c Stokes b Ali 24(76) [4s-3]

4

to du Plessis, FOUR, dear me, an absolute belter of a delivery! Back of length on middle, the ball is slanted in from a wider angle and then it veers away sharply to brutally open Faf up. Gets a thick edge past a diving third slip

4

to Bavuma, FOUR, short and not that wide outside off, Bavuma slashes hard and gets a thick outside edge over the third slip, who is real close with a helmet on. He had absolutely no time to react

4

Ali to du Plessis, FOUR, similar line but this one's overpitched, Faf's not missing out. He drills the ball through to the extra-cover boundary. Nothing that the boundary-rider can do

4

to du Plessis, FOUR, not quite where he intended, but gets four nevertheless. It was full and outside off, du Plessis looked to drive it square on the off-side, but the thick outside edge runs down to third man between the slip cordon and gully

4

to du Plessis, FOUR, this is timed really well. Never looked like he would get four for that. The ball runs down the hill and beats the fielder chasing from mid-wicket. A well timed flick to deep mid-wicket

4

to Bavuma, FOUR, what a shot to welcome to his new spell. It was short and wide outside off, Bavuma gets on top of the bounce and punches it to deep point. Stands there and admires his shot

W

to Bavuma, out Bowled!! What a ball that is to get rid of Bavuma. An error in judgement brings the downfall. This ball didn't do much off the deck, just went straight on, but it was the line that got Bavuma leaving. The ball clips the top of off-pole and brings joy to the English camp. Bavuma has thrown away yet another start in the series. Bavuma b 46(93) [4s-4]

W

to du Plessis, out Bowled!! This game has turned on its head. Two in three for and its the Protea skipper, who sees his stumps shattered. It was on a good length just outside off, du Plessis played outside the line of the ball and gets a thick inside edge that left the gap exposed for the ball to sneak through his pads and hit timber. Middle stumps takes a beating. roars in delight. du Plessis b 27(39) [4s-4]

D

to Theunis de Bruyn, no run, ripper of a delivery from . That hit the surface and kicked off to take the shoulder of the blade. The ball flies to the left of Jennings at gully, who got a fingertip to the ball. Failed to hold onto the catch with his left hand

D

Ali to de Kock, no run, another drop chance. This was much easier to the one on the previous one. The outside edge on the cut flies to the right of Stokes at first slip. He got both hands covered, but the ball popped out and landed behind him without giving him a second chance to grab at it

4

Ali to Theunis de Bruyn, FOUR, Theunis de Bruyn executes the reverse sweep to perfection. Hits it behind backward point and collects his first boundary

4

to Theunis de Bruyn, FOUR, this should boost his confidence. Half-volley on off-stump, Theunis de Bruyn whips it past mid-on and collects his second boundary

W

to Theunis de Bruyn, out Caught by Root!! Well that shot surely didn't give him any confidence. Infact it forced him to play away from the body with no feet. Wasn't there to be driving, it was on a good length outside off. Theunis de Bruyn drives on the up gets a thick outside edge. Root moves to his left and takes a regulation slip catch. Theunis de Bruyn c Root b 11(21) [4s-2]

D

Ali to Maharaj, 1 run, huge deflection of the outside edge, can't really call that a dropped catch - although Bairstow almost managed to get his gloves in the right place. It goes between his legs for a single

4

to de Kock, FOUR, short of length on off, de Kock pulls backward of square for four. No one at fine leg

6

Ali to Maharaj, SIX, that's a bottom-handed hack over the long-on boundary. He uses his feet and gives it a fair tonk with the turn

4

Ali to Maharaj, FOUR, immediately the length shortens and Maharaj goes back to cut it for four. He wasn't in total control, but it flew away well wide of slip off the thick top-edge

W

Ali to Maharaj, out Lbw!! It seemed Maharaj gave himself out once the ball struck his pad. He hung pretty far back to defend a fullish off-break. It didn't spin back enough, skirted past the outside edge and hit him around off. Impact might have been marginal, but there was little doubt about anything else, and he almost walked. Maharaj lbw b Ali 13(26) [4s-1 6s-1]

4

to de Kock, FOUR, pushes away from the body, and it flies away off the outside edge between slips and gully. Frustrating for the bowler, but you can't have fielders everywhere

4

to Rabada, FOUR, back of a length around off, holds its line, and is squirted past gully for four. Rabada took his bottom hand off to ensure that the thick edge goes along the ground

4

to Rabada, FOUR, how well has he played that! Big in-dipper from round the wicket, Rabada's head doesn't fall over though as he flicks it off his pads over the fielder at mid-wicket

4

Ali to de Kock, FOUR, excellent comeback from de Kock. He quickly goes back into his crease to a short one and slaps it through point for four

W

to de Kock, out Caught by Bairstow!! The final threat for England has been wiped out. Root pumps his fists, knowing what a big wicket this is. A good length delivery around off, lovely line, compels de Kock to play at it, and then just leaves him with the angle to take the outside edge. Comfortable enough catch for Bairstow to his left. de Kock c Bairstow b 24(66) [4s-3]

4

to Rabada, FOUR, full and wide, Rabada flashes a drive and slices it over gully for four. Went real hard at it

4

Ali to Morne Morkel, FOUR, gets a bit more elevation, goes straighter, and beats mid-on this time. Valiant effort from the fielder to no avail

4

Ali to Morne Morkel, FOUR, Ali flights another one up, and big Morne goes again. This is a much cleaner blow. He's right to the pitch of the ball with a forward stride and swings through the line over mid-off. Landed on the half-volley with the cushions

4

to Morne Morkel, FOUR, looks to the heavens and cries in anguish. The edge has just evaded a diving Root at second slip, before running away for four. Morkel drives timidly away from the body with zero conviction, never in control. It brings him four

4

to Rabada, FOUR, woah, Rabada! He's played his fair share of ravishing drives in his career so far. And this is another of those. Gets forward and smokes it on the up through extra-cover

4

to Rabada, FOUR, well flighted ball, Rabada plants his foot down and drills it straight back over the umpire. Blistering hit

W

to Rabada, out Caught by Stokes!! My goodness, Ben Stokes keeps outdoing himself every time. He took a pretty good one off Moeen Ali earlier, and this one's even better. It's a blinder at gully. Fullish outside off, leaves Rabada late and takes a thick edge. The ball zooms low to the left of Stokes who dives across and plucks it with one hand. It's barely an inch off the turf. No wonder he's flaunting his left hand. It's magic. Rabada c Stokes b 23(28) [4s-5]

OT

to Morne Morkel, 1 run, run-out opportunity goes to vain. Morne Morkel tucks it to square leg and scampers for a quick single. The fielder picks it up and has a shy the strikers end, but misses

4

to Olivier, FOUR, lucky runs these are for South Africa. Olivier opens the bat face and gets a thick outside edge that rolls wide of gully. Stokes gives chase only to come second as the ball dribbles over the boundary rope

W

to Olivier, out Caught by Bairstow!! That's it. End of South Africa's innings. Anderson doesn't get his five-fer and almost puts his hand up as an apology. Coming to the ball - it was a short delivery outside off, Olivier drags the pull off the top edge and the ball skies behind the keeper. Bairstow calls for the catch as Cook was closing in and takes it comfortably. Olivier c Bairstow b 4(12) [4s-1]

4

to Jennings, FOUR, first runs of the morning. Back of a length on middle and leg, and Jennings glances it fine for four. Simple put-away

D

to Jennings, no run, did get there? Oh he did. That has to go down as a chance, albeit a tough one. Good length on off, Jennings gets a thick inside edge onto pad and the ball pops up straight back down. It's testimony to how athletic is that he charges forward in the followthrough and puts in a full length dive to reach the ball with both hands. But he can't hold onto it. Slaps the turf in frustration

4

Morkel to Cook, FOUR, now that's a proper half-volley and Cook jumps all over the offering, not knowing when the next one will come. He punches it firmly down the ground, beating short mid-off to his left

4

to Cook, FOUR, oh hit that. Loose from . A perfect cut-ball for Cook to put away through backward point. He flashes it away uppishly, and it flies through the gap

4

to Jennings, FOUR, gets right on top of the ball before slapping it through cover-point. Apart from Morkel, there have been enough loose balls on offer to take the pressure off England in what seem to be perfect bowling conditions

4

to Jennings, FOUR, too full from , Jennings leans over it and drives it through cover. Wasn't much scope for error on the drive, because it landed just under the bat

4

to Cook, FOUR, pops up straight off the glove, but loops over de Kock. It's a cracking short ball over Cook's right shoulder, beats him for pace on the pull and almost strangles him for room. Lucky runs

W

to Jennings, out Caught by de Kock!! There's the edge which South Africa have been seeking all morning. gets the length right and the line right, and Jennings falters. It's another failure for him. Good length ball angling away from off, Jennings doesn't move across enough to cover its line. His only movement is forward, so he leaves himself susceptible to the angle. The ball kisses the edge for a regulation catch to de Kock. Jennings c de Kock b 17(37) [4s-3]

4

to Cook, FOUR, he's doing so well to put these away. The bowlers have been all over him so far, but any opportunity, and Cook pounces. Pitched up at the stumps, the ball is full enough to be punched down the ground for four. Lovely timing

4

Morkel to Westley, FOUR, this should give Westley a lot of confidence. Gets a full delivery on off-stump, Westley brings his bat down straight and drills it past mid-on. The ball races away into the fence

4

Morkel to Westley, FOUR, deserves a boundary. Any batsman would love that. Angling into the pads, Westley whips it to deep mid-wicket and the ball races away down the hill

4

de Bruyn to Westley, FOUR, that's crashed off the back foot. Not the ideal pace to drop it short and wide. Westley climbs on it and punches it through the covers

4

to Westley, FOUR, gets the edge, but Westley did really well to get it over the slip cordon. He slashed hard at a short and wide delivery. The edge flies well over the second slip

4

to Cook, FOUR, Cook reaches out and gets four. Well wide of off, full and he moved across to ease that into the gap. Raced away past the chasing Bavuma

4

to Cook, FOUR, fraction short and Cook doesn't miss out. Didn't time the pull that well, as he went back, but got it wide of deep fine leg's right. A sprawling dive from the fielder, but he can't rein that in. Four more and that's an expensive over from

4

to Westley, FOUR, he is so good off his pads. Top player by the looks of it. A bit of Kevin Pietersen in those flicks of his. Plays against the spin, but since the length is so full, there's any scope for error, so he flicks effortlessly wide of mid-on and it races away

W

to Cook, out Caught by de Kock!! Gone. Nice piece of bowling and that has consumed Cook. Drifted in and then landed on a fuller length outside off, enticed Cook into the drive, a thin edge and well held by de Kock. Against the run of play, South Africa have a wicket. Cook who was looking so good, has to go four short of a fifty. Cook c de Kock b 46(103) [4s-6]

W

to Westley, out Caught by de Kock!! What a catch. That's too good from de Kock. Flies horizontal to his right, with his glove stretched out and grabs it from first slip's range. Not sure if that would've carried to Amla. But de Kock wasn't going to die wondering there. A superb take - he has taken one like that before in the series and does it again. The wicket is as much his as 's, who drew the edge on the back foot block. South Africa with another quick wicket and they are right back in this now. Westley c de Kock b 29(88) [4s-5]

4

to Root, FOUR, Root is off the mark. Superb shot. Leant into the driven and got it wide of extra cover. A floaty half-volley and Root took his chance and that eases the pressure

4

to Root, FOUR, where's the third slip? Or a fourth? It goes right into that vacant gap. Full and wide outside off, Root drove well away from the body and gets lucky

4

to Root, FOUR, he's so good with this shot. Knows there's no-one behind square for the paddle sweep and gets four with a fine connection

4

to Malan, FOUR, pitched up outside off and with cover open, Malan has an open invitation and he accepts it, drives through that gap and takes a boundary

OT

to Root, no run, another shout for lbw not given. Faf has a chat with and goes for it. No problems with the front foot. No inside edge onto the pad as well. As expected it is umpire's call on hitting. Just clipping and Root is saved by Aleem Dar's original decision. South Africa lose a review. This nipped back in sharply once more, caught Root on the shuffle and hit the pad above the kneeroll. Everything going for it, except it wasn't hitting the stumps flush. Looking at Faf might have gone for the review

4

Morkel to Root, FOUR, even when a man is there in the deep for this shot, he gets four by beating him. On a good length outside off, he delays the back-cut and plays it at the last moment possible and it races away through gully

4

Morkel to Malan, FOUR, fine leg-glance and four. From round the wicket and slipped into the pads, neatly helped away and even though de Kock dived to his right, he was quite a bit away from the ball

W

Morkel to Malan, out Caught by du Plessis!! Loose and Malan is gone. Morkel threw the full delivery outside off and wanted Malan to have a go, he did and the edge landed safely in the captain's hands at second slip. With just around five minutes before tea, an ill-advised shot that one. But Morkel and South Africa won't mind that at all. They keep chipping away. Malan c du Plessis b Morkel 18(44) [4s-2]

4

to Root, FOUR, what a way to greet post-tea. It was over-pitched outside off. Root is in such great form. He drills the drive past the diving cover and the ball hurries into the fence

4

to Stokes, FOUR, poor delivery and he gets punished. Short delivery down the leg, Stokes helps it down to fine leg with a short arm pull. Second boundary of the over for England

4

to Stokes, FOUR, make that three off the over. Right in the slot. Stokes clears his front foot and whips it past mid-wicket. Raced away in no time. Such was the timing on that from Stokes

4

Morkel to Root, FOUR, Morkel can't believe it! That's gone between keeper and first slip. It was de Kock's catch for sure. It was a beauty of a delivery. Shapes away late and gets a thick outside edge. The ball flies to the right of de Kock. This was much easier to what he took earlier in the day to get rid of Tom Westley. Infact he moved initally and let it go

OT

Morkel to Root, 3 runs, 5000 Test runs for Root. The crowd is up on their feet and yell Rooooooooot! This was driven through the gap between cover and mid-off. These two are making threes look ridiculously easy

OT

to Root, 1 run, yet another fifty for the skipper. 10th fifty plus score in a row in Test matches. It was too straight and Root clips it down to fine leg and gets to the milestone. The crowd are up on their feet once more to applaud the effort. He raises his bat to the crowd and soaks in the applause

W

to Root, out Lbw!! Given OUT LBW! Root takes the case upstairs. has his foot well behind the line. Moves to UltraEdge now, looks like there is no bat involved. HawkEyes shows three reds and Root will have to make a walk back to the pavilion. Coming to the ball - it was a fuller delivery on off, Root walks across and down the track, misses the ball completely. He was a sitting duck as soon as he missed the flick. has a loud shout and Aleem Dar has his finger up in a flash. A huge moment in the game for South Africa. Root lbw b 52(101) [4s-6]

4

to Bairstow, FOUR, similar delivery which got Root out, but Bairstow is upto the challenge. He stays outside the line of the ball and flicks it to deep square leg. Gets off the mark with a boundary

4

to Stokes, FOUR, nailed. The crunch on the drive could mean only one thing. Overcooked, with some width dished out as well as Stokes waits on it to drill it through the covers

4

to Stokes, FOUR, width. A friendly sitting up length as well. Couple it with the slow pitch. Tall quickly, on the bounce to ride it and slap it through the covers

4

to Bairstow, FOUR, he has picked the line up so quickly, and hence, despite the ball being on the fuller side, Bairstow knows there's no great risk involved. Drifting in on leg, Bairstow bends down low and wallops the sweep through square leg

4

de Bruyn to Stokes, no ball, FOUR, geez, he's floated up a full toss outside off - not the way you want to start a new spell. Stokes accepts it gleefully and slaps it through extra-cover. To make things worse, he's overstepped too

4

Morkel to Stokes, FOUR, oh this is just .. ugh! Morkel cuts a desolate figure. He's doing well not to tear his hair out. Full ball angling away from off, Stokes drives away from the body and the outside edge flies between the slip cordon and gully. Only two slips. Only two slips

OT

to Stokes, 2 runs, presses forward to a good length ball and pushes it back down the ground - straight of mid-off. Before it's hunted down, Stokes takes the two runs which he needs to raise his half-century. He continues to go from strength to strength

4

Morkel to Bairstow, byes, FOUR, swing for Morkel. Big swing. It starts wide of off, has Bairstow reaching out, and then whirls past his outside edge. De Kock almost tried to collect it in front of first slip, but he could only deflect it to the boundary

4

to Stokes, FOUR, a resigned pull shot from Stokes. He knows he's beaten for pace, but it's too late to withdraw from it. So he goes through and deflects it off a top-edge to the boundary

4

to Stokes, FOUR, half-deliberate, half-edged! Back of a length outside off, Stokes dangles at it away from the body and to justify his error, he opens the bat-face and pokes it through backward point

W

to Stokes, out Bowled!! Fast and furious from , hear him roar! Stokes dilates his eyes, almost as if he didn't pick the ball. It doesn't matter. This is a yorker straight from hell. It's a stunning delivery. Full, pacy, and bursting under the bat to shatter middle and off stump. Wow , wow! Stokes b 58(96) [4s-8]

4

to Bairstow, FOUR, lays into a half-volley and drives it through extra-cover. Too easy

4

to Bairstow, FOUR, good length ball outside off, Bairstow wants to leave it alone, but in trying to do that, he middles it through gully for four. He was too late in lifting his bat, and knocked it right out of the sweet spot

4

Morkel to Bairstow, FOUR, on the pads and put away. The over has ended in a disappointing fashion. For Morkel. Easy delivery and Bairstow clips past square leg and it races away

4

to Roland-Jones, FOUR, top square drive. The length and width was there for the shot and Roland-Jones didn't hold back. Got forward and timed the shot, into the gap at cover. That shot should give Roland-Jones a lot of confidence

W

to Roland-Jones, out Caught by Bavuma!! Falls now. Tries to repeat the previous stroke and doesn't keep it down. Straight to point where Bavuma initially seemed not to have picked it. Then held on. That's the nightwatchman gone early in the piece. Roland-Jones c Bavuma b 4(10) [4s-1]

4

to Moeen Ali, FOUR, a fine shot. It was a length delivery on the stumps, Moeen Ali punches it past , mid-on is wide and it races away. All timing on the shot and Moeen Ali gets off the mark in nice fashion

4

Morkel to Bairstow, FOUR, Bairstow will play his shots. Full and wide outside off, he lashed out and got a thick edge that flew over gully, into the vacant third man fence for a boundary

4

Morkel to Bairstow, FOUR, shot. He is so quick to put the bad ball away. Was a good length delivery outside off, Bairstow went on the back foot and punched it through cover. Two men gave chase, but the ball won the race

4

Morkel to Bairstow, leg byes, FOUR, third boundary of the over and that's a poor ball. Sliding down and it takes the pad on the way to beat de Kock. 12 came off that over

4

to Moeen Ali, FOUR, short but the wrong line, down leg, Moeen Ali swivels on the pull and gets it wide of de Kock, the keeper asks fine leg not to chase it and instead goes up to retrieve the ball from the boundary

4

to Moeen Ali, FOUR, if you don't get the short ball right, it can leak runs. Moeen Ali picks this from outside off and then rolls his wrists to keep the shot down, past square leg and into the fence. Suddenly five boundaries have come off the last two overs

4

Morkel to Bairstow, FOUR, 50 for Bairstow. His glorious run continues. The crowd at OT stand up to applaud. Wasn't a bad ball, length delivery outside off, the width was there and Bairstow cut it late, past the diving gully and since there's no third man, it was always a boundary

W

to Moeen Ali, out Caught by du Plessis!! Edged and gone. Good catch at second slip. No feet from Moeen Ali, as he tried to punch a length delivery sliding across him. Could only edge it low to the diving Protea captain. Easily held too and has another. Moeen Ali c du Plessis b 14(12) [4s-3]

4

Morkel to Broad, FOUR, there are three slips and a gully, but it has gone wide of all of them. Full outside off, Broad drives and the edge misses gully's right-hand

W

Morkel to Broad, out Bowled!! Cleaned up. Ambitious from Broad, no feet and just blindly drove through the line, pitched around middle-off and hit off. May have come in a bit, but there was a big gap left by Broad and Morkel found a way through. Broad b Morkel 7(3) [4s-1]

4

to Bairstow, FOUR, thumped past . Overpitched by and Bairstow didn't hold back. Crashed it along the ground

4

Morkel to Bairstow, FOUR, deep mid-wicket had no chance. Was a middle-stump delivery and Bairstow got forward to flick that in the air, beats the deep fielder easily

4

Morkel to Bairstow, FOUR, powered wide of mid-off. Was in the air, but well wide of the fielder. Laced on the up by Bairstow

4

to Bairstow, FOUR, when the field is up he puts them away. Width outside off, not much but Bairstow has slashed a back-cut wide of gully and gets another boundary

4

to Bairstow, FOUR, now Bairstow is showing off. He shuffles across and gets low to play an ODI shot, paddle-scooped it to the fine leg fence. Beat the fielder who was too square

6

to Bairstow, SIX, he's on the charge. Skips out and gets under the length delivery, carves it flat and high over long-off. All the way and now into the nineties

4

to Bairstow, FOUR, Bairstow gets four, but Anderson will be on strike next over. This was well wide of off, Bairstow moved across and then dabbed it wide of gully, beats Morkel at third man and the big man gave up

OT

to Anderson, no run, not given lbw. And South Africa are appealing for a bat-pad as well. For that KD shakes his head too. So they take the review. No bat or glove involved on first glance. It's umpire's call on hitting. So Anderson survives. He flashes a smile after the decision is made. But what a shot to play when Bairstow is on 94. Anderson attempts the reverse sweep and misses, the only thing that saved him was height and the ball-tracker showed it to be clipping

4

to Anderson, FOUR, fraction short outside off, Anderson is back and across and cuts wide of cover. Enough timing on that to get it to the fence. OT faithful applaud that shot

W

to Bairstow, out Lbw!! Given out lbw on 99. Bairstow reviews immediately. What an anti-climax it will be if this is out. Everyone wait with bated breath. No bat or glove. Gone. Out for 99. Bairstow walks back to a standing ovation. Gets a pat on the back from Morkel on the way to the dressing room. Such a shame that he missed out on a 100 - which he thoroughly deserved. He went for the sweep and was struck in front of off - an umpire's call on impact - the tiniest of margins to miss a hundred. And this is one. Once it was umpire's call on impact, and given out onfield, it was always going on to hit, especially when the ball had struck the pad low. So ends things, but take nothing away from Bairstow's innings. He has given England more than they would've asked for. Bairstow lbw b 99(145) [4s-14 6s-1]
