W

to Sami Aslam, out Caught by Karunaratne!! Wicket number 395 for and Pakistan have lost an early wicket. Lovely deception from the veteran spinner, he drifted this one around off, the ball then shaped to spin back before holding its line, Aslam was prodding forward in defence, doesn't cover for the angle and gets a thick edge - to the left of Karunaratne at first slip, he slides across and gobbles it up. Sami Aslam c Karunaratne b 2(16)

W

to Azhar Ali, out Caught by Dickwella!! Now, now - are Pakistan making a mess of this chase? Azhar has been dismissed for a duck. Stunning delivery from , pitched up around off and there's a hint of shape into the batsman before the ball straightens. The initial angle made Azhar play across the line, the bat-face closed and the edge flew to the right of the keeper. Dickwella was moving to his left, he then gets across and holds on. Can Sri Lanka spring a surprise? Azhar Ali c Dickwella b 0(2)

W

Perera to Masood, out Caught by Kaushal Silva!! That's another massive wicket and Pakistan are digging a hole for themselves. This was drifted wide of off, Masood came down the track, doesn't get close to the ball and then opts to pad it away. Unfortunately for him, the ball deflected off the pads, took a bit of bat and lobbed in the air towards cover. Silva ran across to his right, dives and pouches the catch. Masood stayed in the middle for quite a while, the umpire checks for a possible no-ball, but is fine on that count. Masood c Kaushal Silva b Perera 7(26)

OT

to Shafiq, no run, appeal for LBW and Sri Lanka want a review. It's a fair delivery, did it straighten? I don't think so, is the angle taking it down the leg-side. Nothing on the Ultra Edge, missing the leg-stump, says Hawk Eye, Sri Lanka lose a review. A wasted review - one would feel - this was the arm-ball from , pitched on middle and went with the angle, Shafiq was prodding forward in defence and missed

W

Perera to Babar Azam, out Caught by Dickwella!! Another one for Perera. Pakistan are quaking. Nicely bowled by Perera, he drifted it fuller in that iffy channel. Azam came forward to defend - playing inside the line. The ball straightened enough to catch the feather - very faint edge. Excellent take by Dickwella. Perera and Sri Lanka are over the moon. Babar Azam c Dickwella b Perera 3(16)

W

to Shafiq, out Caught by Karunaratne!! All hail the hero - . Two wickets in two overs and Pakistan have lost half their side for 35. It was a grenade kind of a delivery. Hits one of the cracks and leaps up at Shafiq. He made room to cut - the extra bounce does him. Ends up edging it to first slip. Karunaratne shows superb reflexes and hangs onto it - in front of his face. The Sri Lankan camp is jubilant. Shafiq c Karunaratne b 20(44)

OT

Perera to Sarfraz, no run, "Howzaat" goes Perera and Co. They decide to take the matter upstairs. A review for LBW, given NOT OUT on-field. No issues with the front foot. Looks close, don't think there was any bat there. Only question here would be whether the ball is spinning down the leg-side. Impact - Umpire's call. NOT OUT, it stays. Sri Lanka don't lose the review, it was just a 50-50 call and Chandimal took the gamble. Spins in from outside off, Sarfraz was seeking to work it to the leg-side with a closed bat face. The ball turns in and pins him on the pad. The impact came to his rescue even though the ball was crashing into the leg-pole

4

Perera to Haris Sohail, FOUR, first boundary of the innings. Loud cheers and applauses in the Pakistan dressing room. A hit-me ball, low full toss on the stumps. Sohail whips it away through mid-wicket. A rare loose ball from Perera

4

to Haris Sohail, FOUR, edged and four. Where is the second slip, Chandimal? Would've gone straight into the hands, if there was ever one. Full and outside off, Sohail went chasing for a cover drive. The ball moves late, takes the outside edge and flies in the pocket between widish first slip and gully

4

Perera to Haris Sohail, FOUR, that's a loosener and Haris Sohail latches onto it. Shortish with width served outside off. Sohail waits for it on the back foot and slashes it away through backward point. Third boundary of the innings and all have come off the bat of the debutant

W

to Sarfraz, out Stumped!! He's gone! This is a big, big wicket for the Lankans. They are delighted. Sarfraz Ahmed looks to go after the wily, old spinner and perishes. It was nicely tossed up delivery and Sarfraz was beaten in the flight. After stepping out, he wanted to work it through the on-side. The ball brushes his back pad and hits Dickwella's pad as the ball kept a tad low. The keeper recovered well by picking the ball and whipping off the bails. Sarfraz was nowhere near the crease. Sarfraz st Dickwella b 19(44)

6

to Hasan Ali, SIX, less than 40 now! Hasan Ali did hit a couple of sixes against in the first essay. Eases the nerve in the Pakistani camp with a maximum now. It was floated up outside off, with mid-off in, Ali stoops low and thumps it over long-on

W

Perera to Haris Sohail, out Lbw!! Haris Sohail is given OUT lbw by umpire Richard Kettleborough. He has to take the review. And he has taken. Fair delivery. Pitched in line, hit on the back leg above the knee-roll. No bat involved. Is that missing off or going over the stumps? Clipping off - umpire's call. OUT! Pakistan don't lose the review, but sadly they lose Haris Sohail. It was the off-break from round the wicket and Sohail was stuck in his crease. He was neither on the back foot, nor full-heartedly on the front foot. The ball spins away a tad, misses the outside edge and gets hit on the back pad. Sohail was playing for the straighter one here. Sri Lanka are 3 wickets away from a win. Haris Sohail lbw b Perera 34(69) [4s-3]

W

to Hasan Ali, out Bowled!! Hasan Ali is bowled around his legs. This is really smart cricket from the Sri Lankan sperahead. After conceding that six, he shifted to over the wicket and that has worked wonders. Ali moves across to sweep and misses a full ball that pitches just outside leg and crashes into the stumps. Hasan Ali b 8(15) [6s-1]

OT

to Yasir Shah, no run, vociferous appeal for caught behind and umpire Nigel Llong shook his head in disapproval. The Lankans go upstairs. Fair delivery. There's a spike on UltraEdge, but that's the ball thudding the thigh pad. Nothing when it passes by the wood. The on-field call will remain intact. SL have exhausted their reviews. This was a length ball down the leg-side, that beat Yasir's glance and settled into the hands of Dickwella after brushing the batter's thigh

4

to Amir, FOUR, 27 needed now! Amir charged down the ground and probably saw that as he tossed it up outside off. Amir reached out for it and hit it over mid-off. Well over the fielder and that's four bonus runs

W

to Amir, out Bowled!! 100 wickets for against Pakistan! Yet another five-wicket haul in Tests, another bag of 10-wickets for the match. Can he now spin his team to a sensational victory? Lovely delivery to get to his milestone, this was tossed up invitingly outside off, landed in the rough and then spun back into the left-hander, Amir was lunging forward on the defensive push, created a small gap between bat and pad, the ball snuck through and rattled the stumps. Sri Lanka are all over their champion bowler. Amir b 9(18) [4s-1]

W

to Mohammad Abbas, out Lbw!! Sri Lanka are celebrating again, Mohammad Abbas wants a review, but this looks like it's just for formality sake. It's pad first, adjacent to middle-stump, OUT is the call as Hawk-Eye returns three REDS. Sensational from Sri Lanka, Pakistan have been defeated in Abu Dhabi for the first-ever time. Oh! Not to forget, 400 wickets for the wily old champion - - becoming the first left-arm spinner to take so many wickets in the history of Tests. Celebrations in the Sri Lankan camp, Pakistan look disconsolate. They have begun the new non-MisYou era with a humbling loss. Coming to the ball, it was pushed through flatter and on the stumps, Mohammad Abbas was backing away on the cut, always a bad idea against , he missed, the ball clattered into the pads - bang in front of middle, simple call for umpire Llong. Mohammad Abbas lbw b 0(8)

W

Shah to Karunaratne, out Caught by Masood!! Shah has made impact straightaway. How often have we seen it? Karunaratne's concentration is snapped. Targets the rough outside off with this leg-break, gets turn to come back in - Karunaratne was looking to work it to the leg-side - feathers an inside edge onto his pad that ballooned up to FSL. Masood keeps his eyes on the ball as he backtracked a bit and gobbles it up. First incision has been made. Karunaratne c Masood b Shah 10(23)

4

Ali to Thirimanne, FOUR, su-weet. Half-volley outside off, Thirimanne accepts the driving invitation and leans into it, crunches it through cover. First four of the Sri Lankan innings

W

to Thirimanne, out Caught by Sarfraz!! Goodness gracious! That injury to Hasan Ali has worked in Pakistan's way. Second Test wicket for Asad and look at him go off. He is absolutely delighted. He gave a bit of flight outside off and got it to turn away from the left-handed batsman. Thirimanne was forward to defend and got a faint outside edge. Sarfraz won't miss those. Thirimanne c Sarfraz b 7(25) [4s-1]

4

to Kusal Mendis, FOUR, good looking shot. Mendis comes down the track and lifts it over mid-on

W

Sohail to Kaushal Silva, out Lbw!! Appeal for lbw and the umpire raises his finger in a flash. Kaushal Silva doesn't review. It was full and Silva brought out the wrong shot against it - the sweep. Misses it completely and gets pinged on the front leg in front of leg. There's turn and that would have gone onto hit leg and middle. Sri Lanka are effectively 48-3. Three reds on HawkEye. Kaushal Silva lbw b Sohail 25(87)

W

Shah to Chandimal, out Caught by Shafiq!! Edged and taken! This is the big wicket. Chandimal, the centurion in the first essay has to depart for a single digit score. He wanted to play against the spin and that has led to his downfall. The sharp leg-break from Shah. Chandimal, in an attempt to knock it towards mid-wicket, gets an outside edge that is gobbled up Shafiq at first slip. He got a bit of drift inwards as he bowled from wide of the crease. Nicely done! Chandimal c Shafiq b Shah 7(30)

W

Abbas to Kusal Mendis, out Lbw!! Mendis has been adjudged LBW on-field. He reviews. Abbas has some part of his heel behind the line, so fair delivery. Don't think there's any bat involved. UltraEdge doesn't find anything. HawkEye in: Two reds. Mendis has to depart. Pakistan have struck in the third over of the morning. What a big wicket. Full and curved back in sharply, Mendis was caught in the crease - all at sea. Fails to account for the nip and the ball pings him on the back pad. Mendis took his time before reviewing it and seemed like he turned to the dressing room before challenging it. Sarfraz and Co. wasn't too pleased about it. Kusal Mendis lbw b Abbas 18(72) [4s-1]

4

Abbas to Lakmal, FOUR, short and Lakmal dismisses it from his presence. Swivels across and pulls it away behind square on the leg-side

4

Abbas to Lakmal, FOUR, sucker ball from Abbas, Lakmal goes after a booming drive - ekes out an toe-edge. Goes in between slip and gully - along the ground to the third man fence

W

Abbas to Lakmal, out Caught by Babar Azam!! The nightwatchman's watch has ended. The trap was set for him and he falls into it. He stalked with danger a couple of balls ago - this time Abbas went short. Lakmal went for the pull despite knowing there was a fielder in the deep. Hits it straight down the gullet of Babar Azam. Straightforward catch. Sri Lanka are disintegrating fast. They checked for a possible no-ball, but Abbas' heel was just behind the line. Lakmal c Babar Azam b Abbas 13(47) [4s-2]

4

Shah to Dickwella, FOUR, Dickwella will remain positive, no matter what. He picks up the googly early by stepping out of his crease and then drills it straight down the ground

W

Shah to Dilruwan Perera, out Lbw!! Dilruwan Perera has been given out lbw and he has reviewed. Fair delivery. Fair delivery. Was there an inside edge? Looks like it just missed the nick. To me, it's pad first. Ahsan Raza is the TV umpire and he is taking his time. No bat! Three reds on HawkEye and Perera has to depart. Sri Lanks lose their review as well. Sri Lanka are now effectively 98-7. This was the zooter from Shah and Perera was playing the leg-break. Ends up playing down the wrong line and gets pinned on the front leg in front of middle. The only thing that could have saved him was an inside edge. Unfortunately, there was none and the ball-tracker shows it to be hitting leg. Dilruwan Perera lbw b Shah 6(21)

W

Shah to Herath, out Caught by Masood!! Two in two for Shah and he is on a hat-trick now. Herath is out for a golden duck. hits the rough from round the wicket and gets to turn into the left-handed batsman. Herath is forward to block. Extra bounce means the ball hits the glove, brushes the front pad and lobs to Masood at short leg. Herath c Masood b Shah 0(1)

4

to Sandakan, FOUR, there was a wide-ish leg-gully and the ball eludes his dive. , deliberately bowled one on the pads asking Sandakan to flick it away and the latter fell to the trap. Luckily, got it wide of the fielder. The man in the deep puts in a dive, but couldn't push the ball back into play

4

to Dickwella, FOUR, Sarfraz isn't happy with the delivery! bangs it in short and Dickwella arches his back to periscope it over the keeper's head. Nicely done

4

Shah to Dickwella, FOUR, good shot! Dickwella gets low and employs the reverse-sweep to good effect. Brooms it over backward point and the ball dribbles away into the fence

4

Ali to Dickwella, FOUR, edged and four! The outswinger and Dickwella looks to play across the line. Takes the edge and flies through the vacant thid slip region. Races away to the fence

W

Shah to Sandakan, out Caught by Amir!! Goodness me! What has Lakshan Sandakan done? After negotiating all those tough ones, Sandakan perishes to a loosener. It was short and wide outside off - the attempted googly. Sandakan could have let that go. His eyes lit up and went after it. Cuts uppishly and hits it straight to Amir at backward point. 12th fifer in Tests for Shah. He celebrates it by performing the sajdah. Sandakan c Amir b Shah 8(19) [4s-1]

W

Ali to Pradeep, out Bowled!! There's the trademark Ali celebration. The pump and then the arms aloft. Sri Lanka have been bundled out for 138 and Pakistan require 136 to go 1-0 up. It was a super ball to the number eleven batsman. Tailed in off a good length and Pradeep was beaten by pace as well. There was a little gap between bat and pad. The ball sneaked through it to disturb the stumps. Pradeep b Ali 0(1)

4

to Masood, FOUR, gets one fuller in length. Masood is onto it in a flash with an off-drive. The fielder at mid-off was fairly wide. First boundary off the innings for Pakistan

4

Perera to Sami Aslam, FOUR, much fuller in length inviting the batsman to comes down the track. Sami Aslam accepts and creams the drive wide of mid-off. Pradeep gives chase, only to come second

4

Perera to Sami Aslam, FOUR, never looked like that would go all the way. Sami Aslam helps the full delivery with a sweep behind square. The timing on that takes it past the fielder at deep square leg for a boundary

4

Perera to Sami Aslam, FOUR, back-to-back boundaries for Sami Aslam. This time he jumps down the track to meet the pitch of the ball and lofts it over the bowlers head for a one bounce boundary

4

Perera to Masood, FOUR, this time Masood does what his partner did a while ago. Comes down the track and chips it over the in-field. Didn't get the desired timing, but had enough to dribble into long-off fence

4

to Sami Aslam, FOUR, good use of the feet by Sami Aslam. Gets to the pitch of the ball and swings through the line. Falls just short of the boundary at long-on

4

to Masood, FOUR, cracking shot, tossed up well outside off, Masood gets a big stride forward, gets close to the pitch of the ball and beats cover with the drive, first boundary of the morning

4

to Masood, FOUR, cracking shot, too short from , Masood swivels across, rolls his wrists over and pulls it behind square on the on-side, beats the fielder placed three-fourths on the way to the boundary

4

to Masood, FOUR, lovely from Masood, too full and too wide from , Masood gets a good stride forward and drills it past extra-cover, no need to run for those

4

to Masood, FOUR, beautifully played, raises Masood's third Test fifty, this was tossed up invitingly outside off, slightly too full once again. Masood gets a good stride forward and drives it through extra-cover. The fielder at mid-off gave up the chase very early

OT

to Sami Aslam, 2 runs, banged in short and going with the angle, Aslam was in no control as he went for the pull, manages to get it in front of square on the on-side and comes back for the second run, raises the 100-run opening stand

OT

Perera to Sami Aslam, 1 run, Aslam has emulated his partner and raises his 7th Test fifty. Masood walks up to him and congratulates - Aslam waves his bat to the dressing room to soak in the applause. It was a pitched up delivery just outside off, Aslam waited on the back foot before steering it towards short third man

W

Perera to Sami Aslam, out Lbw!! Chandimal has a brief chat with Perera and Co. He decides to refer it. An lbw appeal, looked real close. Fair delivery. No bat there. Only impact outside off can save Aslam now. Third umpire looking at different angles, wants to be pretty sure. UltraEdge confirms too it's pad first. HawkEye coming up: Three reds. Pitching - outside off. Impact - in-line. Wickets - hitting. So an excellent review by Sri Lanka. They produce a wicket out of nowhere. Bit of unfortunate for Aslam; it was a grubber almost - stayed very low. He was caught in the crease all at sea. Couldn't combat that and the ball hits him flush on the pad. Perera picks up a wicket in his new spell. Sami Aslam lbw b Perera 51(130) [4s-4]

OT

Perera to Azhar Ali, no run, Azhar Ali is given out LBW on-field. He has a word with his partner and reviews it. No issues with the front foot. Did Azhar get an inside edge there? UltraEdge spots some spike. Yup, the on-field call has been overturned. Azhar Ali survives. He wasn't too keen to review unsure about getting an inside edge. Nonetheless, it has worked for him and Pakistan. An off-break that spun back in from outside off, refused to wake up and Azhar Ali was in a soup. Sri Lankans went up in chorus and umpire Nigel Llong raised his finger. However, it was clear on replays that he inside-edged it there

W

to Masood, out Bowled!! Got him. The spinners are making the ball talk in the last few overs. So, both openers back in the hut for Pakistan in quick time. The sweep shot is epidemic, they say and it has led to Masood's downfall. Rifled quick and full from , Masood exposed all the three stumps by planting his front foot across, misses the line totally and the ball crashes onto the stumps. is pumped and he collects his first wicket. Masood b 59(148) [4s-6]

4

to Shafiq, FOUR, lovely shot, Shafiq breaks the shackles with a well-struck hoick over mid-wicket, this was tossed up outside off and spun back in, Shafiq got a big stride forward, got underneath the length and played the slog sweep, with the turn, almost went all the way, bounced just in front of the ropes at mid-wicket

4

to Shafiq, FOUR, cracking shot, loopy delivery outside off, Shafiq bends down low, takes the ball on the full and sweeps it past square leg, there's no one in the deep and it brings up Pakistan's 150

4

to Shafiq, FOUR, 50-stand up between these two with this boundary. Half tracker outside off, Shafiq backs away and smashes it past mid-off. The fielder gives a desperate chase but to no avail

4

to Shafiq, FOUR, oh! Shafiq is on the move. Second boundary of the over. Dances down the track, meets the pitch and hoicks it over mid-on. Couple of bounces and into the fence

W

to Shafiq, out Caught by Lahiru Thirimanne !! Edged and caught! That's the wicket Sri Lanka needed, the second new ball has done the trick. He slowed down the pace, dropped his length short and got the ball to grip and turn, Shafiq didn't need to play at that, he was caught in two minds, ends up poking at that, the edge goes low and straight to Thirimanne at first slip. He doesn't drop those, goes with both hands and clasps it cleanly. Shafiq c Lahiru Thirimanne b 39(119) [4s-4]

4

to Azhar Ali, FOUR, gorgeous shot, first boundary for Azhar and he's nailed this flick, long half-volley on his pads, Azhar gets inside the line and flicks it in front of square on the on-side, beats mid-wicket and rolls away to the fence

OT

to Azhar Ali, 2 runs, fifty for Azhar, his 26th in Tests, gets a good round of applause from the dressing room, length delivery on the stumps, he played with a straight bat and found the gap wide of mid-on, comes back for the second run

4

to Azhar Ali, FOUR, cracking shot, it was the slower ball from , but the length was too full, Azhar spotted it early and drilled it back past the non-striker, beat mid-on to his left and rolled away to the fence

4

Perera to Azhar Ali, FOUR, welcome boundary for Azhar Ali after a long time. Tossed up on off, Azhar scooches low and sweeps, bisects two men between deep mid-wicket and deep backward square leg

4

to Babar Azam, FOUR, overpitched and gets punished. Googly outside off, Azam leans across and creams it through extra cover

4

to Babar Azam, FOUR, top shot from Azam. overpitches and Azam deals it elegantly. Just a mere push past the bowler, beats mid-off and races away!

W

to Babar Azam, out Caught by Dickwella!! Wow. A wicket in the final over of the day. Can you believe it? Azam's concentration goes for a toss. He hangs his head down and walks away disappointed. Mickey Arthur isn't amused, wearing a dejected face in the dressing room. It was a loosener from , not a wicket taking delivery at all. The batsman could've well left it alone. What does he do? Tries to tickle it fine but the ball catches glove and Dickwella pouches it safely. Umpire Nigel Llong's finger went up straightaway and Azam didn't bother reviewing it. Sri Lankans are delighted, why not. With that, it'll be stumps. Babar Azam c Dickwella b 28(81) [4s-2]

4

to Haris Sohail, FOUR, first ball in Tests and Sohail gets off the mark with a boundary. Width on offer outside off from a short of length. Sohail waits for it and flays it away behind point

4

to Haris Sohail, FOUR, overpitched and Haris Sohail latches onto it. Bit of width served as well allowing the batsman to free his arms. Sohail, sans any feet movement, throws his bat at it and sweetly drives it through extra cover

OT

Perera to Azhar Ali, no run, big appeal for lbw. After a long chat with the bowler, Chandimal decides to take the review. Fair delivery. Was there an edge. It was nicely tossed up delivery by Perera. Azhar Ali is down to play the sweep. Is there a bit of bat before it hit the front leg? The ball did keep a bit low. No spike on UltraEdge. The impact is way outside off. Sri Lanka waste a review. The on-field call stays

4

Perera to Azhar Ali, FOUR, lots of flight outside off, doesn't turn much and Azhar Ali takes full toll of it. He plants his left leg across and hammers the drive through exra cover

W

to Azhar Ali, out Caught by (sub)Sadeera Samarawickrama!! Rangana strikes! This is a big wicket for Sri Lanka. Azhar Ali misses his ton by 15 runs and he is certainly not happy with himself. He walks back thudding his bat on the turf in disappointment. Coming to the ball, it was floated up a bit on the stumps. Ali jogs down the track and turns his wrists to clip it through mid-wicket. Plays it uppishly and that led to his downfall. Sadeera Samarawickrama, the sub at mid-wicket, dives forward and takes a fine low catch. Azhar Ali c (sub)Sadeera Samarawickrama b 85(226) [4s-4]

4

Perera to Sarfraz, FOUR, first boundary for Sarfraz. Loose ball from Perera and he gets the punishment. Loopy full toss, Sarfraz reaches out on the front foot and drives it wide of mid-off

6

Perera to Sarfraz, SIX, now a six! Sarfraz won't stay here blocking around. He has decided to go after the offie. Comes down the track and in the process moves off-side as well. And then, follows it up with a lofted on-drive over long-on. Plays with the turn and the ball has enough wings to go all the way

W

to Sarfraz, out Bowled!! Similar delivery and Sarfraz drags it back onto the stumps. picks up his first wicket. Again banged it short closer to off; Sarfraz, in a bid to pull it in front of square - squirts a bottom-edge onto his stumps. A lucky breakthrough for Sri Lanka. is pumped, so are the rest of his team-mates. Basically, Sarfraz was undone due to the lack of bounce there. Sarfraz b 18(21) [4s-1 6s-1]

W

to Amir, out Lbw!! Amir has been given OUT lbw. He is having a chat with his partner and reviews. No issues with the front foot. Looks pretty adjacent and there's no bat involved. Hawkeye in: Pitching - outside off. Impact - in-line. Wickets - Umpire's call. Since the on-field call is OUT, the decision will stay. Amir has to walk back. What a spell this is turning out to be from . Pakistan are losing the plot. It was full and nipped back in, Amir pressed across to defend, couldn't combat the inward nip - the ball thuds him on the pad and umpire Richard Kettleborough took his time before raising his dreaded finger. Hawkeye showed that the ball was clipping the top of off-pole. Amir lbw b 4(19)

4

to Yasir Shah, FOUR, woah. An oasis in this dessert of dots and singles. Half-volley on the stumps, Yasir leans forward, with a full face of the bat - drives it past mid-on. Hand-eye coordination and all that jazz. Beauty!

W

to Yasir Shah, out Caught by Thirimanne!! A wicket off the final ball before lunch. Yasir clearly was looking fidgety against and the old warhorse removes him with a beauty. Well-flighted it on off, Yasir crouched low after getting his body weight forward - attempting to turn it to the leg-side. The ball spins away, takes the leading edge and spoons up to first slip. Sitter for Thirimanne. And that will be lunch. Yasir Shah c Thirimanne b 8(19) [4s-1]

4

to Haris Sohail, FOUR, lovely shot! Good use of the feet from the debutant. Haris Sohail gets close to the pitch of the ball by getting out of his crease and sweetly times the drive. High back lift and he found the gap between mid-off and extra cover

6

to Haris Sohail, SIX, there you go! Haris Sohail takes on the fielder mannning the ropes and succeeds. He comes down the track and handsomely lofts to over long-on

4

to Hasan Ali, FOUR, starts with a half-tracker, Hasan Ali jumps back on the back foot and smashes it down the ground past mid-off

4

to Hasan Ali, FOUR, lots of flight and Hasan Ali swings his bat hard. Finds the gap between mid-on and deep mid-wicket. It didn't come off the middle, but Ali won't mind

6

to Hasan Ali, SIX, wow! Hasan Ali is playing his shots here. Flatter ball, Hasan Ali with a high back lift thumps it down the ground. Over long-on for a maximum

4

to Haris Sohail, FOUR, short, wide and spinning further away outside off. Sohail rocks back and cuts it past the backward point fielder. Moves to 48

OT

to Haris Sohail, 1 run, fifty on debut for Haris Sohail! He hadn't played first-class for three years and his selection faced a lot of criticisms. His bat has done the talking. On the pads and Sohail glances it behind square to bring up his half-ton. He raises his bat up and wears a smile on his face. His team-mates in the dressing are up to applaud this effort

6

to Hasan Ali, SIX, second six for Hasan Ali. Gets down on one knee and nails the slog sweep over mid-wicket

6

to Hasan Ali, SIX, Hasan Ali is taking a special liking to . He is giving the leather a good tonk. Once again, sinks low and deposits it into the long-on fence. Brings up the 50-run stand as well

W

to Hasan Ali, out Stumped!! There you go! Hasan Ali's good little cameo comes to an end. And, Rangana has the final laugh. 32nd fifer for in Tests. It was bowled slower through the air and Ali got deceived after coming down the track. He wanted to work it through the on-side and played down the wrong line. The ball spun past his outside edge and Dickwella did the rest. Clever bowling. Hasan Ali st Dickwella b 29(25) [4s-2 6s-3]

D

to Haris Sohail, no run, dropped? Haris Sohail comes down the track, takes it on the full and mistimes the push-drive back towards the bowler. Did the ball carry to the bowler? The keeper was animated. Got to wait for the replays

4

Perera to Haris Sohail, FOUR, Haris Sohail gets close to the pitch of the ball and hammers the drive through the cover region. He slightly moved leg-side before playing the shot

6

Perera to Haris Sohail, SIX, excellent use of the feet. Haris Sohail once again comes out of his crease and this time plays through the line of the delivery. Goes aerial and manages to clar the long-off rope

OT

to Mohammad Abbas, no run, confident shout for lbw, umpire Nigel Llong says no. Chandimal has a word with and they review. No problem with the front foot. Appears to have missed the inside edge. Yup, no bat - confirmed by the UltraEdge. HawkEye coming up: Pitching - outside off. Impact - in-line. Wickets - Umpire's call. Since the on-field call was NOT OUT, it remains the same. And Sri Lanka don't lose a review, according to the new rules. It was the slider from the veteran, Mohammad Abbas came forward to block, played inside the line and misses. The ball eludes the inside-edge and strikes him on the pad. Clipping the top of leg-pole

4

Perera to Haris Sohail, FOUR, and again.. This time he threads the gap. Moves away to leg, Perera drifts it outside off; Sohail with a horizontal bat slaps it through cover

4

to Haris Sohail, FOUR, Pakistan take the lead now. Flat and short outside off, Sohail waits and punches it through cover. Zooms away!

W

to Haris Sohail, out Caught by Lakmal!! It's over. The new cherry working wonders for Sri Lanka. Full and on off, Sohail wanted to have a piece of it but can't find the sweet spot. Toe-ends it and the miscue is taken safely at mid-on by Lakmal. Pakistan have been bundled out for 422. Haris Sohail c Lakmal b 76(161) [4s-7 6s-2]

4

Ali to Kaushal Silva, FOUR, edged and four, but there was some control over the shot from Silva. On a good length and just outside off, Silva pushed forward with soft hands, dropped his left handle at the point of contact, the edge rolls away past the diving third slip fielder

W

Ali to Kaushal Silva, out Bowled!! has struck for Pakistan, the first wicket of the series and he begins his trademark celebrations. Silva was very jittery right through, once again he's late on the leave, the ball takes the inside edge and crashes into the leg-stump. He was lucky a few moments ago, but no such thing this time. Coming to the ball, it was short and well outside off, Silva made a late call to let the ball go through - turns out to be a fatal mistake. Kaushal Silva b Ali 12(58) [4s-1]

W

Shah to Thirimanne, out Lbw!! That's a terrible shot from Thirimanne, he doesn't want to go, has a look at his partner - who sends him on his way. A duck on Test comeback for Thirimanne, two wickets in quick time and Sri Lanka are frittering away the toss advantage. This was the leg-break from , pitched around off and spun back into the left-hander, Thirimanne was looking to heave it over mid-wicket, went with a bent knee and missed. He was struck adjacent to middle and the ball was crashing into the middle of middle. As plumb as it gets, an easy call for umpire Llong. 150 Test wickets for , the joint second-fastest bowler to do so, fastest by a spinner. Thirimanne lbw b Shah 0(7)

4

Ali to Karunaratne, leg byes, FOUR, too straight and too short from , Karunaratne was looking to flick and missed, so did Sarfraz with the dive, the ball slowly rolls away to top-edge fence for four leg-byes

4

to Karunaratne, FOUR, cracking shot, this has been a poor over so far from , short and wide of off, Karunaratne waits on it and cuts it late, beats Yasir to his right at backward point, no need to run for those

W

Shah to Kusal Mendis, out Caught by Sarfraz!! has struck at the fag end of the session and that will be lunch as well. Huge, huge breakthrough for Pakistan, lovely delivery first-up, slowed down the pace and got it to drift across the right-hander, Mendis was lunging forward in defence, gets a thin edge through to the keeper. Sarfraz got lucky, he didn't grab it on first attempt, the ball lobbed off his back-leg and he managed to grab onto the rebound. Mendis looks gutted, but there's no review from him, he knew he had edged it. Kusal Mendis c Sarfraz b Shah 10(25)

4

Abbas to Karunaratne, FOUR, beautiful flat-batted punch. Places it wide and behind the fielder at backward point. Races away

OT

Abbas to Karunaratne, 1 run, 13th Test fifty for Karunaratne! What a gritty batsman he is. Stays in the crease and prods a quick single to mid-on to get to the milestone

4

Ali to Karunaratne, FOUR, nicely played. Plays late whilst standing tall and has the ball trickling into the deep mid-wicket fence

4

Ali to Chandimal, FOUR, bounces short of slip. Some movement in the corridor of uncertainty outside off, Chandimal dabbles at it, elicits an outside edge but it just doesn't carry. And sneaks through to the third man fence, to make things worse

4

Ali to Chandimal, FOUR, subtle outswinger pitching wide outside off, Chandimal squeezes it out to the deep backward point fence

4

Ali to Karunaratne, FOUR, thick edge on the drive evades backward point. Ali went wide of the crease and got the ball to straighten, hence the outside edge

4

to Karunaratne, FOUR, allows it to come on and then whips it through mid-wicket there. Lovely fire in that stroke

OT

Abbas to Karunaratne, 1 run, the partnership between Karunaratne and Chandimal is now 100! Not quite to the pitch of this full ball is Karunaratne, so he slices it to cover for a single

W

Shah to Karunaratne, out Karunaratne Run Out!! Shambles. Karunaratne shimmies out and clips it to mid-on, calls his partner around who keeps his ground. Chandimal just turns back and doesn't respond. And with both the batsmen at more or less the same end - bowler's end - Sarfraz has an eternity to gather the throw and whip the bails off. Karunaratne walks back, dejected, after a well-made 93.. Karunaratne run out (Mohammad Abbas/Sarfraz) 93(205) [4s-5]

OT

Shah to Dickwella, no run, Pakistan review: Looks high but Sarfraz reviews. The leg break spins in from outside off and is rapped between the thighs, above the knee-roll. Now is there an inside-edge there? It matters because the ball was caught behind too but there's apparently none, for they are looking into ball-tracking now. Umpire's call on impact and hitting, so the on-field decision stays but Pakistan don't lose a review

4

Ali to Chandimal, FOUR, cracking shot, long half-volley outside off, Chandimal plays with a bent knee and drills it through extra-cover, beat mid-off and rolled away to the fence

4

Shah to Dickwella, FOUR, nicely played! Dickwella doesn't like to get bogged down, bends down low, reverses his stance, rolls his wrists and sweeps it behind square on the off-side for his first boundary

OT

Shah to Dickwella, no run, we will have another review, this is for a caught behind call. Not much can be made by the initial review, but when it's zoomed closer, it's clear that the ball missed the glove by a long distance. Ultraedge confirms that the ball missed everything. Pakistan will lose their first review now. This was nicely tossed up on off, Dickwella went down low on the sweep and missed. Sarfraz was quick to get across and gather, belted a huge appeal and immediately signaled for the review once umpire Kettleborough said NO

4

Ali to Chandimal, FOUR, lovely from Chandimal, length delivery on his pads, he gets inside the line and clips it behind square on the on-side, beat square leg and rolled away to the fence in a hurry

4

Shah to Chandimal, FOUR, fifty for Chandimal, his 13th in Tests, a rare long hop from , dropped it short and on the stumps, Chandimal rocks back and pulls it over mid-wicket for a boundary

4

Ali to Chandimal, FOUR, too short and too straight from , ends up drifting onto Chandimal's hips, he gets inside the line and helps it off his hips, beats Sarfraz and rolls away to the fence

OT

Abbas to Chandimal, no run, Chandimal has been given OUT LBW, he wants a review. He didn't offer a shot, but is the ball doing enough to hit the stumps? It's a fair delivery, Chandimal has been struck outside off and the ball isn't doing enough to hit the stumps. Umpire Kettleborough will have to change his decision. That's a good review from Chandimal, he erred in judging the line, offered no shot to one that nipped back in, struck low on the back-pad, but the ball wasn't swinging enough to hit the stumps

6

to Dickwella, SIX, cracking shot, length ball on Dickwella's pads and he deposits it high and over the mid-wicket boundary - into the grass banks. Too straight from , Dickwella picked up the length and swung through the line

4

to Dickwella, FOUR, edged and four, streaky runs for Dickwella, was lured into driving away from his body as the ball nipped away late, the edge flew low and to the left of Shafiq at second slip, not a chance and it races away to the fence

4

to Dickwella, FOUR, cheeky and four, banged in short and wide of off, sat up for Dickwella, he watched it all along and ramps it over the slip cordon. He's flying after Pakistan took the second new ball

OT

Shah to Chandimal, no run, loud shout for LBW and Pakistan belatedly take a review. Did this ball pitch in-line? They wern't sure, but implored his captain to take a chance. The height isn't an issue, where did it pitch? Nothing on the Ultraedge. Pitched outside leg and Pakistan will have no more reviews for the rest of this innings. The only issue was where did the ball pitch, this was the leg-break, beat Chandimal as he prodded forward

4

Ali to Dickwella, FOUR, cracking shot, it was nothing more than a check drive - was in the air and to the right of the bowler, beat mid-off to his left and there's no need to run forthose

4

Ali to Dickwella, FOUR, beautifully played, on a good length and well wide of off, Dickwella leans forward, plays with an open face and fins the gap - in front of square on the off-side

4

Ali to Dickwella, FOUR, edged and four, a third slip would have swallowed this one, nicely bowled by , on a good length and shaping away from outside off, Dickwella was lured into playing at that, gets a thick edge that rolls away through the vaant third slip region

OT

Ali to Dickwella, 2 runs, fifty for Dickwella, his 6th in Tests, back of a length and well outside off, steered away behind square on the off-side, comes back for the second run

4

to Dickwella, FOUR, handy runs for Dickwella, back of a length and well outside off, Dickwella hops across and dabs it late, gets it through the gap behind square on the off-side and rolls away to the fence

4

Shah to Chandimal, FOUR, cracking shot, overpitched and well outside off, a rare loose ball from , Chandimal gets a big stride forward and drills it through cover, beats the man in the ring and rolls away to the fence

OT

4

Shah to Chandimal, FOUR, lovely shot, dropped this one short and wide of off, Chandimal makes room and cuts it square past cover. Babar gave the chase, but gave it up early, Chandimal moves onto 73

4

Ali to Chandimal, FOUR, lovely shot, on a good length and just outside off, Chandimal leans forward, drives it on the up and beats the fielder at short extra-cover, all along the carpet and the ball races away across the outfield

4

Shah to Dickwella, FOUR, once more Dickwella is not in control of the shot. Shimmies down and is not to the pitch of the ball, heaves it between short mid-wicket and mid-on. It was in the air but in the gap

4

Shah to Dickwella, FOUR, this time evades Hasan Ali at backward point. The reverse sweep comes out and Dickwella ensures he rolls his wrists to keep down, beats Ali to his left and it races away to the fence

4

Shah to Chandimal, FOUR, long hop and Chandimal cashes in. Looks like is tiring. Dropped well short, Chandimal makes a bit of room and slaps it through extra cover. It is a packed off-side field and he pierces it with ease

W

Ali to Dickwella, out Bowled!! Out comes the customary Ali celebration - the fist pump and the spread of the arms. He's made a habit of making batsmen drag deliveries onto their stumps. A well-set Dickwella does not bother to move his feet as he tries to force the back of a length delivery through the off-side, the inside edge crashes into the off-stump. The partnership has been broken and Pakistan have an opening against Sri Lanka's lower order. Dickwella b Ali 83(117) [4s-9 6s-1]

OT

Shah to Dilruwan Perera, no run, umpire Llong's finger went up in a flash. The googly from , probably for the first time in the Test he's bowled that. Perera did not read it, prodded forward without much clue and luckily got some inside edge onto the pad. If not for the bat, Llong had got it spot on

4

to Chandimal, FOUR, hundred for Chandimal. A captain's knock this. His first ton as the skipper of Sri Lanka. Came in at a tricky situation and added crucial partnerships with Karunaratne and Dickwella. This is even more special because he is carrying the burden of the middle order on his lone shoulders in the absence of Mathews. The smile on his face says it all. #9 in Tests and he gets there in style. Chandimal was leaving those balls from outside off alone, but this time puts a giant stride forward and creams the drive through extra cover. Does not even bother to run and starts celebrating. The helmet comes out and the bat is raised along with it followed by the kiss on the helmet-badge

4

Abbas to Chandimal, FOUR, short, wide and four, poor ball from Abbas, plenty of width outside off and Chandimal smacked it through point with the cut, no need to run for those

4

Shah to Chandimal, FOUR, lovely from Chandimal, he's making think now, once again the line is wide of leg-stump, Chandimal bends down low, reverses his stance and sweeps it behind square on the off-side, beat the man at point and rolled away to the fence

4

Shah to Chandimal, FOUR, cracking shot, Chandimal is certainly playing with the field now, comes down the track, makes room as he did so and goes over mid-off with the lofted drive, a couple of bounces and over the fence

4

Ali to Dilruwan Perera, FOUR, a deluge of runs all of a sudden, friendly full-toss outside off, Dilruwan gets forward and thumps it through the line, beats the diving fielder at mid-off and rolls away to the fence

4

Sohail to Dilruwan Perera, FOUR, lovely use of the feet, races down the wicket and gets close to the pitch of the ball, drills the drive past the non-striker and mid-on dives in vain

6

Sohail to Dilruwan Perera, SIX, fabulous shot! Sohail is bowling from round the wicket, tossed up on leg-stump, Dilruwan races down the wicket and lofts it handsomely over the long-on fence

W

Sohail to Dilruwan Perera, out Lbw!! Maiden Test wicket fo Sohail. He is mobbed by his mates. Should have had Dilruwan in the first session, but was denied by the UltraEdge. Not this time. The flatter delivery, Dilruwan kneels down and misses the sweep, a shot he was not comfortable with throughout the innings, the impact was in front of middle and ball-tracking showed it to be hit leg-stump. Two relieved people there - Sohail and umpire Kettleborough. He would not have liked another decision being overturned. Dilruwan Perera lbw b Sohail 33(117) [4s-2 6s-1]

W

Shah to Herath, out Caught by Babar Azam!! The decision has gone in favour of Pakistan. Excellent by the third umpire for being consistent. When there was a spike for the Dilruwan LBW appeal even though there was nothing on the replay, he gave it in favour of the batsman then and now there didn't seem to be bat involved but with UltraEdge showing a trigger, he did not alter the onfield decision. Flighted delivery turning in, Herath goes for the reverse sweep and the ball lobs off the arm-guard to leg slip. is delighted with that wicket, he's toiled hard and without much luck after he picked up two early wickets in his spell. Falls over in jubiliation. Herath c Babar Azam b Shah 4(10)

OT

Shah to Chandimal, 2 runs, 150 for Chandimal. Highest score for him away from home. Tossed up on leg-stump, Chandimal does not care if it is the last over before tea, heaves it over mid-wicket and the ball plugs in the outfield

W

Abbas to Lakmal, out Lbw!! Nigel Llong gives it a thought and rules it against the batsman. That looked dead. Lakmal looks to whip it across the line and misses. Pings him on the back pad and that would have crashed into middle stump. There are no reviews left and Lakmal will have to walk back to the pavilion. Lakmal lbw b Abbas 7(14)

4

Abbas to Sandakan, FOUR, width on offer outside off, Sandakan reaches out for the drive and gets a thick outside edge down to third man. Gets off the mark with a boundary

4

Abbas to Sandakan, FOUR, poor bowling from Abbas. Sprays it down the leg this time and pays the penalty. Sandakan gets enough bat on the flick. Races away fine towards fine leg

W

Abbas to Sandakan, out Lbw!! Huge shout for LBW and is given straightaway. Sandakan had walked across a long way to flick. It was a dangerous shot to play across the line. The ball keeps low and pings him in front of leg-stump. Might have been umpire's call had they had a review. Sandakan lbw b Abbas 8(6) [4s-2]

W

Abbas to Pradeep, out Bowled!! Abbas gets him first ball. It was full and straight on the cards with a bit of reverse. Pradeep plays outside the line off the ball leaving the ball to sneak through bat-pad and crash into middle and off. Pradeep b Abbas 0(1)
