Khan to Tharanga, leg byes, FOUR, never a right line going down leg. looks for some movement, gets none with the ball holding its line and darting down leg. Off the pad roll beating Sarf's dive

W

Khan to Dickwella, out Lbw!! On the move, on the swing and on the miss. keeps it dead straight. Right on the stumps, with Dickwella shuffling across and looking to heave it across it line. Is completely done in by the zip, misses and is plumb in front of off getting struck on the pad flap. Doesn't even bother considering a review. Dickwella lbw b Khan 3(7)

4

to Tharanga, FOUR, confusion. Galore. And that moment when both the keeper and second slip do not go for the catch. Yeah, first slip is missing. Tharanga stands flat footed, going hard on the slap, and the edge picks the gap

4

to Tharanga, FOUR, rubbing it in. And a pose too. A gentle half volley, with width, and is drilled away, gracefully through the covers

4

to Kusal Mendis, FOUR, goes uppish. The first real overcook from Rumman and Mendis is quick to pounce on it. Swinging his arms and whipping it over mid-wicket

OT

Ali to Tharanga, no run, they go up. First in appeal. And then to the third umpire. Another Sri Lankan batsman makes the sin of swinging across the line and finds himself pinned in front of leg. was sure..forced Sarfraz to take it upstairs. Okay here we go - no contact with the bat. But it has pitched well down leg..so a double whammy for the Lankans, Tharanga survives and Pakistan lose their only review

W

Ali to Kusal Mendis, out Caught by Ahmed Shehzad!! Oh and his stares have done Mendis in. And out comes the firecracker celebrations. After the sledging, goes short, bending enough back in it to get it at a perfect height. Mendis, looks elsewhere ande succumbs into the hook. Was never in control, skewing it away off the top edge to Shezhad running in from behind square. Mendis and his troubles getting worrisome. Kusal Mendis c Ahmed Shehzad b Ali 10(24) [4s-1]

D

to Tharanga, no run, put down. And it couldn't have been simpler. Tharanga checks his dancing drive, with the ball sticking into the pitch. Shadab, at short cover, runs, intercepts, anticipates a touch too early. Fumbling the balloon

4

Ali to Tharanga, FOUR, streaky. And all gets out of this is a moral victory. Tharanga looks to press forward, realizes it is the short skidder and sways. Only to stand mid-way - frozen. The ball gets big, deviates inwards and takes the face of the edge to fly away behind the keeper

D

Malik to Tharanga, no run, and another one down. Lovely loop, an invite even better and gets the edge. Tharanga has another life. Goes through with the slap, and Babar at slip, for some reason goes reverse cupped getting hurried up. And down she goes

4

Malik to Tharanga, FOUR, tosses it full outside off and gets treated duly. Tharanga lifts the drive over extra cover with an air of nonchalance

OT

Malik to Tharanga, no run, Tharanga given out caught behind. He reviews almost instantly. No issues with the front foot. Slo-mo replays aren't quite convincing. Waiting for the UltraEdge and guess what! Nothing on the UltraEdge. There was a sound, a spike too. All of that popped up when bat made contact with the pad. So, onfield verdict will be overturned. NOT OUT. A quicker delivery outside off, Tharanga went back to cut, but got nothing on the bat. The bat clattered onto pad and all the Pakistani fielders thought they had Tharanga

4

Malik to Tharanga, FOUR, short ball, sits up in the middle of the pitch, Tharanga jumps back and thumps it over mid-wicket for a one-bounce four

W

Malik to Thirimanne, out Lbw!! Thirimanne given out lbw and I'm afraid the technology won't be able to save him. Front foot fine. Nothing on the UltraEdge. Clipping leg - umpire's call. So it will remain out. A slider from Malik, came with the angle and struck Thirimanne low after he missed the sweep. Hit in line with middle and looked pretty close to the naked eye. Thirimanne didn't take long to challenge the onfield call, only to discover the route to pavilion. Thirimanne lbw b Malik 12(34)

4

Khan to Tharanga, FOUR, drops it a touch short and gets punished. Tharanga rocks back and slashes it in the gap between cover-point and backward point

W

Khan to Chandimal, out Bowled!! Bamboozles Chandimal with a googly. Bails fly high and the batsman stands stunned. Motionless. A perfect wrong 'un to outsmart Chandimal, he plays down the wrong line and pays the price. Sneaks through in the bat-pad gate to crash the top of middle. Chandimal b Khan 2(4)

W

Khan to Siriwardana, out Caught by Babar Azam!! The heroes with the bat - Babar Azam and Khan combination does the trick. Extracts some spin off the surface. In fact it's the googly that spins away from the left-hander, Siriwardana offers a lackadaisical poke in response. Thick edge. Flew to the left of Azam, nestled with minimum fuss. Siriwardana c Babar Azam b Khan 3(5)

4

Khan to Thisara Perera, FOUR, way too full and Perera ensured it didn't go scot-free. Leans into a cover drive and smacks the leather out of it, blazes away in the gap

W

to Thisara Perera, out Caught by Babar Azam!! Thisara Perera is out caught at slip. Umpire Richard Kettleborough just wants to be sure. Wants to check if the catch is clean. Soft signal is out. The front angle doesn't seem too convincing. They are trying a few more angles. The one from behind seems perfect and yes! It's a clean catch. Thisara Perera may continue walking... He was drawn forward by a full juicy toss up, feeds a thin bottom edge low towards first slip. Azam juggled the ball twice before arresting the ball between his knees. All that while tumbling back onto the ground. Good catch. Thisara Perera c Babar Azam b 7(5) [4s-1]

W

Khan to Dananjaya, out Bowled!! Things getting bad to worse for Sri Lanka. The legbreak from Khan, Dananjaya was caught napping on the back foot as he left a big gap between bat and pad, allowing the ball to mess with the wood-work. Dananjaya b Khan 1(2)

4

Khan to Tharanga, FOUR, and follows up the meek moment with a loft. Plonks the front leg forward and tonks it straight down. That's the fifty to him too

4

Khan to Tharanga, FOUR, Tharanga has decided to switch gears. Short of length delivery and on this slow surface it sat up, pulled it off the front foot over mid-wicket, not off the middle but no one patroling the fence in the deep

D

Khan to Tharanga, 1 run, dropped? No signal from the umpire. The leg-break turning down leg, Tharanga can't meet with the glance as it is confirmed by the replay, Sarfraz doesn't glove it and it is given as run. Would have been interesting had Sarfraz held on

4

to Tharanga, FOUR, no one at sweeper cover and Tharanga takes advantage of that. Full delivery around off, Tharanga stays on leg-stump and slices the loft over the off-side field, struck it well as the ball raced away to the fence

4

to Tharanga, FOUR, slower delivery coupled with width, right in the slot for Tharanga to slap it over extra cover. He just delayed his shot to place it where he wanted to, couple of bounces and into the fence

4

Khan to Tharanga, FOUR, that's the boundary Tharanga is looking for. Googly too full and on leg-stump, Tharanga crouches low and swings it away over backward square, no chance for Shehzad in the deep

4

Khan to Tharanga, FOUR, consecutive boundaries for Tharanga. The Sri Lankan supporters sense something. Floated up just outside off, Tharanga stays on leg-stump and lifts it inside out over extra cover. Beating sweeper quite comfortably

4

Khan to Tharanga, FOUR, ideal start to the over. Flighted on middle and leg, Tharanga whips it with plenty of bottom hand over mid-wicket, bisected the two fielders in the deep to perfection. Into the 90s now

W

to Vandersay, out Caught by Ahmed Shehzad!! The partnership is broken. A frustrating one for Pakistan as it yielded 76 runs, but one that has kept Sri Lanka in the hunt. The slower short delivery from Rumman, Vandersay is nicely into position and gets it off the meat as well, but the long square boundaries don't help his cause, Shehzad didn't have to move much near deep square leg and he reverse cups it calmly. Vandersay c Ahmed Shehzad b 22(55)

W

Khan to Tharanga, out Lakmal Run Out!! 1 run completed. Hundred for Tharanga. An innings of two halves. The first half contained everything - outside edges, inside edges, dropped catches, close LBW calls, but he braved everything to motor along unfussed. In Vandersay he found an able ally and also his momentum. The game still hangs on his shoulders. However, he has lost another partner. Coming to the wicket: Slanted into the pads and Tharanga worked it in front of square on the leg-side, initially he called for two and hence Lakmal responded, Shehzad charged from deep mid-wicket and fired a flat throw to Sarfraz, who removed the bails and caught Lakmal well short of the crease. Even the third umpire was not needed for umpire Kettleborough. Lakmal run out (Ahmed Shehzad/Sarfraz) 1(2)

4

Ali to Tharanga, FOUR, Tharanga has not yet given up. Short delivery just outside off, Tharanga stands tall and flat-bats it over extra cover. Brute power as the ball almost carried the distance

W

Ali to Gamage, out Gamage Run Out!! 1 run completed. Brilliance from Rumman in the deep. Pakistan win by 32 runs. The Sri Lankan pair were always going for the second as it was the last ball of the over and Tharanga needed to be on strike. A low full toss outside off, Gamage slices the drive square on the off-side. Tharanga was quick off the blocks and called for two immediately, Gamage was running to the danger end and he is caught short by a direct hit. One stump to aim from 60-odd yards and Rumman hit the target. Sarfraz almost messed it up with his urgency but somehow managed to be late. Hand shakes all round as the Pakistan lead the way out of the park. Gamage run out (Raees) 3(6)

4

to Fakhar Zaman, FOUR, here's the charge. For a change the bat swing connects with the meat. Just the iota of room outside off and Zaman clears his leg, and shows the full face in spanking it through extra cover

4

to Fakhar Zaman, FOUR, yorker gone wrong. And jammed back, muscling it straight back. The powerplay and the outfield does the rest

W

to Fakhar Zaman, out Caught by Kusal Mendis!! The peach - on these dead roads. Wow. Toys around with Fakhar's mind using the angle going across, but for some reason he decides to glance it against the line. The nip does him in, skews it away off the leading edge, flying over to a wide slip. Mendis as well, leaps, reverse cupped and these just have to stick. And this one does. Fakhar Zaman c Kusal Mendis b 11(13) [4s-2]

4

to Babar Azam, FOUR, and he's away. A juicy overcook outside way off, gives Azam all the room and breaks the shackles with a drilling drive. Covers ovbiously

W

to Ahmed Shehzad, out Caught by Siriwardana!! Oh my. He's thrown it away. After all the concentration he seemed to be showing in eating up dots, Ahmed decides to go airy with a drive. Gets the width too. Chases it on the up, opening up the bat face and merely guiding it to a well-placed shortish backward point. Some spongy bounce here his undoing. Never an excuse for the ill-witted stroke, certainly not when form has deserted you. Ahmed Shehzad c Siriwardana b 8(17)

6

to Hafeez, SIX, boom. Leaves, defences and all of a sudden goes downtown. All so premeditated. Charges down, away as well to give his arms the breathing space and tonks it straight down

W

to Hafeez, out Caught by Dickwella!! Follows it up with a poke. So very meek. , after getting a heap of balls back in, gets this one to jag away. Hafeez, done in, flirts away from his body, only to end up merely guiding the nick through the keeper. Sri Lanka sucking away all that there is out of this dead road, more than it in fact. amplifies it with his chest banging celebrations. Oh he must've broken a rib. Hafeez c Dickwella b 8(11) [6s-1]

4

to Babar Azam, FOUR, the Babar special. Goes straight down. Nothing particularly wrong with the delivery, was in fact a tight lined one on the stumps deserving a defence. But Babar stays tall, high elbowed and punches it back. Ahh, all grace

4

to Babar Azam, FOUR, quick hands, quicker feet. Spots the long hop and rocks back to cut it square waiting on the spin to place it to perfection

4

to Shoaib Malik, FOUR, cheeky. Down on a knee, nope not to sweep. Waits on the width to get big and waits some more to cut it behind point

W

Perera to Shoaib Malik, out Caught by Dickwella!! Soft dismissal. Malik does not even wait for the umpire. Starts walking as soon as Dickwella completed the catch. Big wicket for Sri Lanka. Nothing but a short of length delivery outside off, Malik wanted to run it down to third man, all he could manage was a fine tickle on the way to Dickwella. Bit too close to the body for him to be attempting that shot. Shoaib Malik c Dickwella b Perera 11(15) [4s-1]

W

Perera to Sarfraz, out Bowled!! Another tame dismissal. Pakistan in trouble now. Perera enjoying himself. He is loving this surface which is aiding his slower deliveries. An off-pace delivery on a driveable length, Sarfraz with his attacking mindset obliges and goes for it with the bat well away from his body, the inside edge crashes into the stumps. Half the side back and Sri Lanka are right on top. In fact, in the replays it shows that it was a seam-up delivery that didn't come onto the bat. Sarfraz b Perera 5(14)

W

to Imad Wasim, out Lbw!! Superb review from Sri Lanka. Dickwella and were confident as they went up immediately. The umpire thought the impact was outside off and gave it in favour of Imad. However, Dickwella urged Tharanga to go for the review and what a call that was! The conventional leg-break that pitches outside off and turns in, Imad plays outside the line and is rapped on the pads. Impact was on off-stump and ball-tracking shows it to be hitting middle-stump. Six down now Pakistan and further more in trouble. Imad Wasim lbw b 10(26)

OT

to Babar Azam, 1 run, fifty for Azam. Pakistan's run-machine keeps going. Hundred in the first ODI and a fifty now. He needs to bat as long as possible to provide some respectability to the total. Tossed up on off, Azam wristily works it to long-on

4

to Babar Azam, FOUR, long time coming this boundary - after 18 overs. Long hop down leg, Azam swivels and pulls it through backward square, no one in the deep to cut that off. Pakistan need plenty more of this

4

to Babar Azam, FOUR, full toss, slipped out of 's palm? Guess so. Babar Azam makes full use and slaps it through covers

4

to Babar Azam, FOUR, with mid-on inside the ring, Babar Azam'S intentions were crystal clear - hit it in the air and over the fielder. Did precisely just that to manufacture a much-needed boundary

OT

to Shadab Khan, 1 run, full ball, hunting for base of middle stump. Shadab Khan opens the bat face to smash the drive wide of cover

OT

to Babar Azam, 2 runs, works it into the gap on the on-side and calls for two straight away. 7th ODI hundred for Babar Azam. An innings full of quality and composure. Take a bow young man! Skipper Sarfraz is happy. Arms loft, kisses the turf and all those glossy celebrations follow. 100 partnership is up too

4

to Shadab Khan, FOUR, clears his front leg while staying rooted to the crease and dispatches a length ball over mid-wicket

OT

to Shadab Khan, 1 run, nails the drive to long-off to bring up his maiden ODI fifty. His partner is impressed, gets all the attention he deserves

W

to Babar Azam, out Caught by Kusal Mendis!! And all that conflab made sense now. A full toss, Babar Azam bludgeons it straight down the throat of long-on. All too easy. End of a wonderful knock from Babar Azam. Babar Azam c Kusal Mendis b 101(133) [4s-6]

6

to Hasan Ali, SIX, bring it on! Hasan Ali needs no sighters. First ball and boom. Lines himself up for a length ball and sends it many-a-mile over mid-wicket. Right into the grass banks

W

to Hasan Ali, out Hasan Ali Run Out!! 1 run completed. Run out check sent upstairs and Hasan Ali seems to be gone. OUT. Got too greedy and ran himself out at the striker's end. The bat was just behind the line when the bails came off. A full toss and Hasan Ali hit it in the gap between long-on and deep mid-wicket. The latter came charging in and rifled a pinpoint accurate throw to catch the batsman short. Hasan Ali run out (Dananjaya) 7(2) [6s-1]

W

to Raees, out Caught by Dananjaya!! Another full toss, Raees uses every ounce of his energy to slog it across the line. Finds deep mid-wicket to perfection. The umpires check for a possible waist-high no ball, but the replays are vivid. No dice. Raees c Dananjaya b 0(1)
