commentary

Whom do we see here? It is Sarfraz Ahmed. And straightaway the instructions come out as he shakes hand with coach Mickey Arthur. 'CHALO!' he yells, though with a smile, to his team mates. It is his first Test series win as a captain. Does not look overjoyed but boy, he cannot hide his glee.

49.4: Y Shah to Jon Holland, OUT! Edged and taken! VICTORY FOR PAKISTAN BY 373 RUNS! 4th biggest defeat for them in terms of runs and the biggest by that margin in Asia. Full and outside off, Holland looks to drive but gets a thick outside edge which flies straight to Haris Sohail at second slip. The celebrations begin and now come the handshakes. PAKISTAN WIN THE 2-MATCH SERIES 1-0!!!

46.3: Abbas to Jon Holland, IN THE AIR... JUST FALLS SHORT OF GULLY! A short ball, around middle, Holland looks to tuck it to the leg side but the bounce does him in. Takes the top edge but does not carry to gully.

Jon Holland is the last man in because Usman Khawaja will not come out to bat.

46.2: M Abbas to Labuschagne, OUT! Abbas gets his 10-fer. What a spell of bowling from the fast bowler. It was short of a length outside off, Marnus Labuschagne caught by surprise, tried to pull it but got the bottom edge and it was an easy catch to the keeper. Marnus Labuschagne takes the review but the Ultra Edge shows there is a spike when the ball passes the bat and he has to go back disappointed. The ball got big on him. Australia are 8 down. Missed out on a deserving half century.

Caught behind! Is that the end of Labuschagne? He has been given out caught but it has been reviewed.

46.1: M Abbas to Labuschagne, Abbas starts of with a back of a length delivery on middle, Marnus defends it on the back foot.

45.2: Y Shah to Lyon, MISSED EVERYTHING! Or did it? Replays seem to indicate that was wicket number 8. Floated generously around middle, Lyon looks to flick but misses. Now, to the naked eye, it seemed like it missed the bat and pad. However, replays show that the ball hit on the boot while Hawk Eye showed it to be hitting the leg stump! Pakistan did not appeal at all because they probably did not realize that the ball hit the boot at all.
45.1

45.1: Y Shah to Lyon, Tossed up outside off, Lyon gets a good stride forward and lets it go.

The players are back out in the middle. Yasir Shah to start off proceedings after the break. Nathan Lyon to face. Here we go...

Welcome back to a still overcast, but slightly better-looking Abu Dhabi. The clouds are still hovering but there is a significant patch of blue as well. The drizzle has stopped completely.

... DAY 4, FINAL SESSION ??? ...

What now for Australia? They have got a good whole hour to ponder on what to do. Nothing much can be expected from the tail-enders, except maybe a bit of a rearguard action. Could they hang around to help Labuschagne get to his 50? Then probably his century? If they do that, it could put some healing on the wounds. Join us back at 1330 local (0930 GMT) for all the action from the second session.

Just as we thought that Abbas would be the sole wicket taker today, Yasir Shah joined the party towards the end of the session with two scalps to his name. With the way the pitch is turning, he might be the sole obstacle in Abbas' path to get a fifer.

Australia started Day 4 nicely, scoring runs in boundaries. They scored 24 runs in 6 overs before the deadly spell of Mohammad Abbas came about. He struck in his 4th over and got 4 wickets in the space of 18 balls. At that point of time, it looked like the Aussies would get rolled over in the first session itself but Mitchell Starc and Marnus Labuschagne got a decent partnership going.

What a session. 33 overs, 108 runs and 6 WICKETS. Given the way Abbas was bowling, it looked like we will never have a second session at all.

41.3: Y Shah to Siddle, OUT! LBW! Number 2 for Yasir. Beautiful bowling. He tosses this around leg, Siddle looks to defend but misses and is hit on the pads. Yasir appeals and the umpire raises his finger. Siddle walks across to his partner, has a chat about the review but then is asked to go back. Oh dear...REPLAYS SHOW THE BALL WAS PITCHED OUTSIDE LEG. Might have just delayed the inevitable a bit more, had the review been taken.

39.5: Y Shah to Starc, OUT! LBW! Cannot blame Starc for using up Australia's review, nor can we blame him for missing that ball. It was tossed up around middle and leg and he stayed back to flick, thinking it will turn. But the ball did not turn much and beat the inside edge, hitting him on the front pad. Yasir appealed and umpire Ravi's finger was up in a flash. Starc reviewed it but in vain. End of the 67-run stand.

Starc has been adjudged LBW! Needless to say, he has reviewed it. Looks out though...

Second DRINKS BREAK of the session. Because it is an extended one, of 150 minutes to be precise. Pakistan have been all over Australia but the last few minutes have provided some soothing to the visitors. With Abbas out of the attack and the field, there seems to be breathing space and the tourists have managed to stop the wicket flow for now. For how long though, is the question, Marnus Labuschagne has looked extremely good and any score in excess of 50 in this inning will do his confidence a world of good.

29.2: Shah to Labuschagne, SAFE. Labuschagne has got his foot back in. A lovely floater from Yasir, slightly wide outside off. The batsman looks to drive but is beaten by the turn. Mohammad Rizwan collects the ball and then takes the bails off, with an appeal. From the first instance, it looks out with Marnus well out of his crease. But seems like the keeper took a bit too long to take the bails off, by which time the batsman got his foot back in.

Is that a stumping? Referred upstairs. Labuschagne did drag his foot outside the line. Did he get it back in?

22.5: Abbas to Tim Paine, OUT! BOWLED! Massive error in judgement from Paine. He has left a straight ball alone and is now leaving the ground alone... A lovely ball, around off, Paine shoulders that because it is too close to play. But mate, that is too close to the off stick as well! He just watches the ball land, then watches the ball seam in prodigiously and then watches his off stump get uprooted with some sound effect as well. Pakistan are overjoyed and Abbas has 9 in the match now - HIS BEST EVER TEST FIGURES. How far is he from his 10th?

Mohammad Rizwan is upto the stumps.

22.2: M Abbas to Finch, OUT! LBW and Abbas has three in 12 balls! Wow. Australia are folding up quickly after an attacking start this morning. Full and outside off, Finch looks to defend but the ball drifts back in a long way, misses the inside edge and hits the batsman flush on the pads. Looks dead and it is ruled out by the umpire. No point in even reviewing that and Finch walks back with a glum face. He has looked the best amongst all the batsmen in this Test series, along with Usman Khawaja. Not much he could have done about this ball. Simply terrific bowling.

20.1: Abbas to Marsh, OUT! The decision is overturned and Marsh is gone LBW! Two wickets in the space of 5 balls for Abbas. On a length outside off, Marsh stays back to defend. But the ball shoots back in, stays low a touch and hits him flush on the back thigh. That looks out to the naked eye and Abbas roars in an appeal but umpire Illingworth shakes his head. The bowler is confident and so is the keeper and they convince Asad Shafiq, standing in for the injured Sarfraz Ahmed, to go for the review. Three reds on the Hawk Eye and that is number 3 down for Australia.

Howzzzat????? Oh dear... Marsh looks to be plumb LBW. He has not been given out though. Abbas has convinced stand-in skipper Asad Shafiq to go for the review.

18.4: M Abbas to Marsh, FOUR! WHAM! Wow. No second thoughts about Australia's thoughts on chasing down 538. Who wants a draw? Anything slightly off line and length and it is going to go. Short and outside off, Marsh's eyes light up and he bludgeons the pull through square leg. Not a soul moves.

Mitchell Marsh comes in at number 4, replacing Head.

18.3: M Abbas to Head, OUT! Caught behind! Head's troubles are over. Abbas has struck in his 4th over of the morning. The channel is perfect, in the corridor of uncertainty. The length is near perfect, somewhere between full and good. The enticing is excellent. 'C'mon Travis, feel for it, play at it.' The response is even better. Because Head does not control his urge to feel for balls outside off. He could have left it alone, but wants to go on a drive in this heat. Bad decision. To drive the car, you need to keep your feet on the accelerator. To drive the ball, you need to get your feet to the pitch of the ball. Travis does not do the latter. Goes at it flat-footed and gets a thick outside edge behind. The 61-run stand is broken and Abbas roars in delight at Head's face. Very, very well set up. Perfect Test cricket. Testing the batsman's patience.

12.2: M Abbas to Head, FOUR! Off the edge. First runs of the day. Full and outside off, Head pushes at it half-heartedly and gets an outside edge. It rolls along the ground past gully and reaches the third man fence. Australia will hope that they get the ball towards the boundary ropes a bit more frequently. The outfield in that part is still damp and it will be difficult to bowl with the wet ball. 50 UP FOR AUSTRALIA. The stand is worth 41 now. Head moves to 21 from 31 balls, with his third boundary.

12.1: M Abbas to Head, A peach first up. On a length outside off, Head feels for it but there is some late movement and the ball beats the outside edge.

The players are out in the middle. Mohammad Abbas to start off proceedings to Travis Head. Here we go!

Tim Paine is having a chat with Brendon Julian. admits that it is a big task, no doubt, needing another 491 runs. But also says that they will take the confidence from the previous game. On the weather, Tim says that they would like to play out every over that they get. Amidst that in all likelihood, Usman Khawaja will not bat, though a late decision might be taken, based on the situation of the game. On the plans for today, TP says they have been laid down pretty simple - bat long, get partnerships and score runs. On the freaking Azhar Ali run out yesterday, the Aussie skipper smiles and says that he has not seen anything like that before but compares Marnus Labuschagne's brain freeze with the same. Says that initially, even he thought it will be a boundary but then saw Mitchell Starc chasing the same. Cheekily adds that he deliberately did not shout on seeing the batsmen mid-pitch but slyly waited for the throw to come and did the rest. Smart cricket. (Not sure whether Niroshan Dickwella, Sarfraz Ahmed or Rishabh Pant would have done the same. Might have yelled their throats out to distract everyone).

WEATHER REPORT - If you are in Kandy, you might grab a candy and sit indoors, enjoying the rain. If you are in Abu Dhabi, you might be in for a bit of a surprise. There was a storm last night and it rained a bit this morning. It is heavily overcast with the sun looking to peak out. However, we should have a start on time.

Okay. Now, let us talk about the match. After being reduced to 57/5 in the first innings, this match has all been Pakistan's. They have not looked back since and as a result, set a target of a mammoth 538 in front of Australia. Talk about the overs, well, the visitors do have a possible 180 more. They need another 491 runs with a required run rate of 2.73. Easy, isn't it? Yaa... I remember once scoring 1024/4 in a computer game. Plenty of laptops and digital assistants around Justin Langer - but he will need more than just those to see his team fight the match out, let alone win this.

Pakistan, on the other hand, have also contributed to the breaking news factor. Their skipper, Sarfraz Ahmed, was hit on the head by a Peter Siddle bouncer yesterday and has gone to the hospital to see a doctor - reporting slight concussion. The 'hosts' do have a reserve keeper, Mohammad Rizwan, in the squad but will they miss their captaincy bit? A calmer Asad Shafiq has been handed the responsibility. Interesting. With Azhar Ali in the playing XI. Very interesting.

Let us focus on the breaking news first. Usman Khawaja did not take the field at all yesterday, due to a slight injury during warm-up. That 'slight' injury has ruled him out of cricketing action for at least 8 weeks. OUCH. He must be feeling the pain even more now. That means Pakistan need 9 wickets to wrap up this match and series, of which they have already got one, in the form of Shaun Marsh.

Australia, a wicket down. Also, a batsman short with Usman Khawaja injured. Pakistan are without their captain, Sarfraz Ahmed, who got hurt yesterday. Does that even things a bit? Maybe not. Hello and a warm welcome - sorry, HOT welcome - to the fourth and possibly, the final day of the second Test between Pakistan and Australia in Abu Dhabi.

... DAY 4 ...

It was a long day for the Australians. Pakistan managed to post up a humongous total on the board courtesy four superb fifties from Zaman, Ali, Sarfraz and Babar. Now, Australia must respond. The task will be to save this match first. Bat as deep as possible and then take it from there. The surface is on the slower side and turning and will only cause more problems. The Pakistan bowlers will give them trouble and they will have to dig deep to get something out of it. Join us at 1000 local (0600 GMT) for Day 4. Could be the last day of the Test. Cheers!

The target is irrelevant right now. Australia lost Shaun Marsh today, when Hamza bowled him out, so have 9 wickets remaining. Post that, Finch and Head managed to hang on and end the day without suffering the loss of any more wickets. There were a couple of close calls, with Pakistan coming close on a couple of occasions, but nothing too threatening.

Beats the outside edge of Shaun Marsh's hanging bat and takes the off stump. Nothing he could have done about it. Would take out most batsmen on any day. Wow. Pakistan have their first breakthrough.

A little update - Usman Khawaja isn't opening the innings because he was off the field for a good while due to injury.
