commentary

Phew! What a game. It could have been a very tight finish at the Chinnaswamy had BLR batted a bit better and our hearts were certainly tested here in Mohali where MS Dhoni - battling a back injury - recorded his highest ever T20 score (79). So that concludes a Super Sunday for us. Well, Monday has just begun. We'll be back in a few hours with KOL v DEL. Have a good night's sleep and come back fresh, we'll be there for you nice and early. Goodbye!

Gayle: It was good to be back. I got a text this morning that I would be playing. I am very happy that I have got off to a winning start for this new franchise. That's Chris Gayle for you - hitting just fours and sixes and not worrying about ones and twos. Rahul took pressure off me at times as well. I am feeling like 25, the Universe Boss is back (laughs).

Gayle is the Man of the Match

Ashwin: I felt there was a lot of dew, but overall the bowling went well. It was crucial to get Rayudu at that point of the game, it was a game-breaking moment. We are not going to be a team that goes back and thinks maybe we could have done this or that, we are going to be a team that thinks maybe we could have stuck to the basics. Today I thought we should unleash Gayle and he had the right sort of an attack to go out there and express himself.

MS Dhoni: Not much going through my mind. They bowled very well, Mujeeb made a difference. I don't think there was much dew on the ground. They played better than us. We can improve in few areas. Chris' innings in the first innings and Mujeeb's bowling made a difference. It was a close game. We will be a safe fielding team and not be an exceptional one. We have to be smart while bowling. We want to keep hitting boundaries here and there and that can make a difference. All the games we have been part of were close, so individuals would have learnt from that. (On not promoting Bravo) Fleming is in the dug out so he needs to take the decision. We have confidence in Jadeja because he being a left-hander is not easy for the bowlers. This is the time we need to give him the opportunity. If Jadeja can do the job of the floater that would be really good for the team as we have Raina at the top of the order. I will back him as we have not given him many opportunities. I don't know how bad my back is but it should be okay. God has given me enough power so I don't have to rely on my back a lot. It shouldn't be so bad. I am used to playing with the injuries. You have to be tough.

Andrew Tye: Very nervy. Mahi put on a show for the crowd. Outstanding effort from the Chennai lads. You have to figure out where you can give away a single or maybe a dot. I would have liked to give him (Mohit) 23. But Mohit did the job. The crowd was awesome and electrifying. We have one more game here and hope to play it in front of a packed crowd.

Watto and Vijay couldn't give the start. Billings' failure put more pressure on Rayudu and Dhoni - who had to milk the bowling for a while because of three early wickets. Rayudu batted very well and he was under the pump with Dhoni not able to strike the ball cleanly. PUN got Rayudu just at the right time - before he could change to 5th gear. Dhoni then upped his game - fought a lower back injury and almost took CHN over the line.

Great to see Bravo and Gayle share a smile as they walk off. No emotions from Dhoni. Mohit congratulates Dhoni. Happy hugs for the PUN team. Gee this got close. But to be honest, how did they let CHN come this far? Had the game in the bag almost, but one man believed and single-handedly threatened the opposition. 198 was never going to be easy, especially with Raina not being there for tonight's game.

19.6
6
Mohit Sharma to Dhoni, SIX, he's hit this all the way but it won't matter - full ball outside off stump, Dhoni lofts it to over long-off. PUN have escaped home by 4 runs. Oh these CHN games and run chases. They get so deep. You got to admire this man - MS Dhoni. Injured very early in the innings, takes some treatment, takes it upon himself and almost takes his side home.
19.5
0
Mohit Sharma to Dhoni, no run, hit to deep backward point and it's been stopped at third man. Dhoni is not running, it's not happening tonight for CHN, the crowd go berserk and the PUN management are relieved
19.4
0
Mohit Sharma to Dhoni, no run, the wide yorker and Dhoni can't make contact. It's a dot ball. Dhoni moved across but couldn't make contact

11 off 3 now

19.3
4
Mohit Sharma to Dhoni, FOUR, he's squeezed this in the gap. There were three fielders behind square on the off-side - point, backward point and short third man, yet Dhoni finds the gap. Can't blame the bowler for bowling a wide yorker, he bowled to the field
19.3
1
Mohit Sharma to Dhoni, wide, he's tried to repeat the wide yorker but goes beyond the wide line. 15 needed off 4. Gee, this is tense

16 off 4 now

19.2
0
Mohit Sharma to Dhoni, no run, that's a clever ball, full and wide outside off stump, Dhoni can't stretch his back because of the injury and he swings and misses
19.1
1
Mohit Sharma to Dwayne Bravo, 1 run, he gets the yorker right, Bravo swings to deep square leg, Dhoni doesn't want the second, wants the strike

He's in serious pain. The physio runs out but Dhoni sends him back. From 36 needed, it's come down to 17 off 6 balls

18.6
6
Andrew Tye to Dhoni, SIX, can you believe it? An injured MS Dhoni has hit a six with one hand. Take a bow sir! Low full toss, no one at deep square, Dhoni backs himself, has an excellent willow in his hand and swings across the line and over the boundary line
18.5
2
Andrew Tye to Dhoni, 2 runs, low full toss and Dhoni mistimes this hit, chipped to long-off, not to hand and he limps back for the second
18.4
4
Andrew Tye to Dhoni, FOUR, talk about presence of mind and there's Dhoni with a bit of deftness. Short ball with third man inside the ring, unbelievable from the bowler. Dhoni spots the field, just guides the ball over the infield to the third man fence. Sehwag smiles from the dug out
18.3
6
Andrew Tye to Dhoni, SIX, smashedddd! Why are you not bowling slower balls Andrew Tye? Strange! Length ball, goodbye! You are asking for trouble. Dhoni actially felt some pain after launching this over deep mid-wicket

Dwayne Bravo, right handed bat, comes to the crease

18.2
0
Andrew Tye to Jadeja, out Caught by Ashwin!! That's mistimed and only goes as far as cover. Normal seam-up delivery, full again for a big hit, Jadeja wanted to go over long-off, sliced it high in the air and the PUN makes no mistake. Important thing is Dhoni has crossed over and will be on strike now. Jadeja c Ashwin b Andrew Tye 19(13) [4s-1 6s-1]

Andrew Tye to Jadeja, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!

18.1
1
Andrew Tye to Dhoni, 1 run, oh he's missed a big hit here. Full and outside off stump, better of going over cover but knowing Dhoni, he believes in muscling the ball rather than lofting over cover

19-run over - just what CHN wanted. 36 needed now off 12 balls. Tye's penultimate over will be key.

17.6
6
Mohit Sharma to Jadeja, SIX, he's smoked that away, Jaddu! This is the second time he's hit a big shot despite being off balance. Slower delivery from Mohit Sharma, Jadeja somehow connects and gets enough power to clear long-on
17.5
1
Mohit Sharma to Dhoni, 1 run, that was a wide ball but Dhoni chose to have a swing at it, mistimed with one hand to long-off and that's fifty for the captain. No celebrations but he gets a big applause from everyone

43 needed off 14 - do CHN still believe?

17.4
6
Mohit Sharma to Dhoni, SIX, oh that's gone a loooong way into the stands. Stand and deliver stuff! Full and in the slot, Mohit Sharma goes for the yorker, misses the yorker by some mark and Dhoni gets under it to send it over deep mid-wicket
17.3
1
Mohit Sharma to Jadeja, 1 run, wide slower ball and Jaddu can only toe-end it towards long-off

Fine leg in, long-on, deep mid-wicket and deep backward square leg in place

17.2
1
Mohit Sharma to Dhoni, 1 run, low full toss and Dhoni has hit this along the ground to wide long-off
17.1
4
Mohit Sharma to Dhoni, FOUR, in the airrr, could be out, oh the fielder makes a mess of it. Low full toss, Dhoni slogs, should have been held at deep mid-wicket, Dagar the sub wasn't quick enough to move forward, he dived but let it pass. He's immediately moved out of that position

Mohit Sharma [2.0-0-16-1] is back into the attack

16.6
4
Andrew Tye to Jadeja, FOUR, oh that's a timely hit! Slower ball on the shorter side, Jadeja made room, lost balance but managed to cut that nicely over cover-point and there's no protection in the deep. 12 off the over, 55 more needed
16.5
1
Andrew Tye to Dhoni, 1 run, brute power but placement was needed. Juicy full ball, could have been chipped inside-out over cover, but decides to go for raw power and smashes it hard along the ground to long-off
16.4
4
Andrew Tye to Dhoni, FOUR, he's muscled that! Look at that ball go so flat and one bounce into the wide long-off fence. Slower delivery outside off stump, Dhoni steps out and the ball sat up nicely for Dhoni to free his arms and smash
16.4
1
Andrew Tye to Dhoni, wide, that's a slower ball gone wrong, way outside off stump, Dhoni lets it pass
16.3
1
Andrew Tye to Jadeja, 1 run, steps out and pulls this short ball to fine leg
16.2
1
Andrew Tye to Dhoni, 1 run, oh that ball almost knocked Jadeja's head out. Hit so hard to long-on from a fuller length, and Dhoni is still moving gingerly with that lower back
16.1
0
Andrew Tye to Dhoni, no run, beaten! Good luck reading Andrew Tye's slower ones. Dhoni had no clue about this one on a fuller length, played and missed

Andrew Tye [2.0-0-16-1] is back into the attack

Time out. 67 off 24 is still possible, but Jadeja needs to up the game and Dhoni needs to connect everything. PUN have some good overs in the bank. Bravo yet to come. Can CHN take this deep? Meanwhile, Dhoni gets another massage from the physio.

15.6
2
Barinder to Jadeja, 2 runs, and now he hits a full toss to hand at deep cover, maybe not his day! And look at Dhoni racing across the pitch with an injured back
15.5
0
Barinder to Jadeja, no run, another dot ball. Asking rate above 15, Jadeja has scored 5 off 7, not what CHN wanted. Wide yorker outside off stump, dug out to backward point
15.4
2
Barinder to Jadeja, 2 runs, PUN won't mind this. Jadeja struggling to meet short balls, mistimed pull to backward square leg and what's more concerning is MS Dhoni still stretching his lower back
15.4
1
Barinder to Jadeja, wide, harsh call for a wide. That's wide outside off stump, maybe over the line, marginal
15.3
2
Barinder to Jadeja, 2 runs, steeply rising short of a length delivery, Jadeja mistimes the pull to backward square leg. Oh hang on, run-out check here. KL Rahul calmly just collected the ball with his left hand and knocked the bails off, but Jadeja was home
15.3
1
Barinder to Jadeja, wide, the slower ball goes down the leg-side, so Jadjea gets that extra ball
15.2
0
Barinder to Jadeja, no run, wide full ball and Jadeja can't put bat on ball. Precious dot ball, Jadeja shadow-practices the slice he wanted to play originally

CHN need to target Sran here. Need a big over to bring that run rate down, going to be difficult otherwise

15.1
1
Barinder to Dhoni, 1 run, short of length delivery outside off stump, Dhoni cuts it to sweeper cover

76 needed off 30 and PUN have three quality overs in it in the form of Tye and Mujeeb

14.6
1
Ashwin to Dhoni, 1 run, wanted to tickle it fine, gets an inside edge onto pad and it rolls to short fine leg
14.5
1
Ashwin to Jadeja, 1 run, back to the off-spin action for Jadeja, on the leg stump, glanced to backward square leg
14.4
1
Ashwin to Dhoni, 1 run, short and slow, probably expected Dhoni to advance, but the captain just flat-bats this from the crease to long-off
14.3
6
Ashwin to Dhoni, SIX, that's why he eats those dots. He knows he can make up for it big time. Flighted delivery on the leg stump, Dhoni gets down on one knee and slog-sweeps it from the middle of the bat over square leg
14.2
0
Ashwin to Dhoni, no run, another dot from the captain. Stands tall and tries to muscle the ball, cut to cover
14.1
0
Ashwin to Dhoni, no run, highly optimistic LBW appeal, the flipper again, hit on the pad, missing leg
13.6
0
Barinder to Jadeja, no run, another mix-up, it's Ashwin again but this time Jadeja had enough time to rush back. Why would you run after hitting a ball straight to hand. The slower ball and Jadeja tapped it towards short mid-wicket. Great comeback from Barinder after being hit for a six. Just 6 of the over in total
13.5
0
Barinder to Jadeja, no run, guides the short of length delivery to backward point

Ravindra Jadeja, left handed bat, comes to the crease

13.4
0
Barinder to Rayudu, out Rayudu Run Out!! Mix-up and the captain fires a direct-hit from extra-cover. Look at him roar. CHN's best batsman on show thus far has been sent back. Massive setback. Rayudu drove this full ball straight to Ashwin at extra-cover and set off, Dhoni said no straightaway - probably because of the niggle on the lower back. But Rayudu had already covered a lot of distance and Ashwin's throw was spot on. Rayudu run out (Ashwin) 49(35) [4s-5 6s-1]

Barinder to Rayudu, THAT'S OUT!! Run Out!!

13.3
0
Barinder to Rayudu, no run, now that is a brilliant comeback by Barinder. Rayudu didn't read that back-of-the slower ball, jumped out and also made room, Barinder bowled wide outside off stump and Rayudu, who had a long way to cover, let it pass
13.2
6
Barinder to Rayudu, SIX, finally a maximum! The asking rate is up high, the runs weren't flowing and Rayudu gets a much needed six. Read the slower ball very early, moved across the stumps and waited for the short ball to come and smashed the ball into the backward square leg fence
13.1
0
Barinder to Rayudu, no run, that's a very good delivery from Barinder, saw Rayudu racing down the pitch and cramped him for room with a short of length delivery very close to the body, Rayudu only manages to play it back to the bowler

Barinder Sran [2.0-0-22-0] is back into the attack

12.6
1
Ashwin to Rayudu, 1 run, Rayudu comes down the track again, but can't get the connection right on this big hit, the ball rolls to long-off
12.5
1
Ashwin to Dhoni, 1 run, fullish and outside off stump, Dhoni guides it towards point
12.4
1
Ashwin to Rayudu, 1 run, knocked away to backward square leg
12.3
1
Ashwin to Dhoni, leg byes, 1 run, appeal for LBW, not given and rightly so, this flipper was slipping down the leg-side
12.2
1
Ashwin to Rayudu, 1 run, steps out but manages to adjust to the shortened length and drives to sweeper cover
12.1
1
Ashwin to Dhoni, 1 run, the flatter trajectory for this leggie, Dhoni backs away and cuts to backward point

Ravichandran Ashwin [2.0-0-18-1] is back into the attack

Gokul informs us that Dhoni is getting some treatment for his lower back. Getting a bit of a massage and he's up on his feet now.

97 needed off 48 balls. Stiff task. Mind you, this is a massive outfield and 197 is as good as 210-215 on a normal size ground. PUN have two overs of Tye left and young Mujeeb, who's kept things very tight, has one more. Not going to be easy for CHN. Interesting times ahead..

11.6
2
Mujeeb to Rayudu, 2 runs, fullish and on the stumps, Rayudu pulls it to deep mid-wicket, can't split the fielders there
11.5
1
Mujeeb to Dhoni, 1 run, low full toss and Dhoni drives it to deep cover, Dhoni still stretching his back after taking that run
11.4
0
Mujeeb to Dhoni, no run, beaten, the quicker delivery outside off stump, Dhoni was late on the cut shot, could so easily have been the edge to the keeper
11.3
2
Mujeeb to Dhoni, 2 runs, he's a rocket between the wickets. Dhoni taps this leg-side delivery to fine leg, calls Rayudu through for the second run and beats the direct-hit. Slight pause in play, looks like Dhoni has hurt his back in that rush for the second. Does some stretching and then he's ready to carry on
11.2
1
Mujeeb to Rayudu, 1 run, the googly and the batsman stays back to punch the ball away to long-off
11.1
1
Mujeeb to Dhoni, 1 run, back footed push into the off-side for a single as the ball skidded on
10.6
1
Andrew Tye to Dhoni, 1 run, fuller length delivery outside off and has been pushed away to deep cover with an open face of the bat for a single. Still 104 needed off 54 balls. The required rate ain't going to rest at all

Andrew Tye to Rayudu, 1 run, slower delivery and the batsman picks the ball late. The batsman throws his hands into the push to long-off
10.4
4

1
Mujeeb to Rayudu, 1 run, 94.7kph, shuffle, behind, punchy. Long-on

Mujeeb Ur Rahman [1.0-0-7-0] is back into the attack

A time-out. So who's looking for advice?

7.5
1
Yuvraj to Dhoni, wide, fires it into the pads, but it doesn't turn, goes straight past the glance

7.3
1
Yuvraj to Rayudu, 1 run, straighter on middle. Nudged away into mid-wicket
7.2
1
Yuvraj to Dhoni, 1 run, runs down right up. Not quite to the pitch, but doesn't hold back. Drills it, almost taking Rayudu's head with it to long-on

Ashwin to Billings, out Lbw!! Ashwin runs to appeal. He wants an LBW. But the umpire's given runs. When you are the skipper and the bowler, you don't consult anybody. We're upstairs. It started with Billings shuffling, exposing his stumps and sweeping. Ashwin smartly slips in the quicker one, bang in line with the stumps. UltraEdge shows no edge. And HawkEye shows it to crash into off. Massive review. Massive moment. Billings lbw b Ashwin 9(8) [4s-1]

Andrew Tye to Vijay, out Caught by Barinder!! So damn ungainly. Vijay sheds his grace, well you have to when you are chasing 200, ends up one-handed. So it was the knuckle ball, Tye's staple, Vijay gets down the track in trying to dispatch it into long-off. Loses shape, loses timing, and Sran's there at mid-off, waiting to gobble up the skier. Mohit Sharma to Watson, out Caught by Barinder!! Too cute, and that's never ideal. Mohit gets his line wrong, slipping into the legs, but he's neatly disguised this slower back-hander. Watson's fooled as he loads up and commits to swipe it, knowing there's nobody at fine leg. Goes through early, gets a fat splice and short fine pockets the balloon. There's a slip around, wide.
