commentary

With Mumbai and Rajasthan having played each other twice, this edition's quota of optical illusion is over. Someone must do something about their similar uniforms, as the teams should about the remaining two play-off spots. HYD and CHN have qualified; and PUN, KOL and RAJ are tied on 12 points (and in that order), while Mumbai hover around on 10 points. Should be a tight finish, just as the major reshuffle before the season promised. Time for Pratyush Sinha to mop up the comm. box clean alongside Shashikant Singh, Sriram, Vineet Anantharaman, Ramakrishnan and Akshay Maanay. Time to get my dinner bills settled.. ta-ta!

Buttler - Player of the Match: "Found some good form and I'm trying to keep it going. Bit of do-or-die situation for us. I've spent a lot of time batting in the middle order, so I try to be there till the end. Our bowlers bowled very well and restricted them to about 15 runs less. The familiarity of the ground and the wicket helped me today. Looking forward to the next game."

Rahane: "Great win for all of us. 168-169 on this wicket was 10-15 runs short. Jofra's couple of wickets in that over changed the game actually. We didn't get a partnership in the earlier games but we knew that if we get one early on, it'll be easy to chase. The discussion before the game was to get used to the wicket as soon as possible. There's room for improvement in the fielding department. I want the boys to stand up and do well in that."

Jofra Archer: It was a good pitch to bowl on. It was a set plan to bowl spin up front. We weren't really nervous coming into the game tonight.

Samson: Very happy. The team atmosphere has been good whether we have been winning or losing and that matters now. He (Buttler) is in amazing form. Real players come out when the team needs them. Very lucky to have him. Very happy with the way I am batting and my contribution to the team. That was amazing (the Hardik Pandya catch). I have been working on my fitness and thanks to our fielding coach Dishant Yagnik.

Rohit Sharma: On a pitch like that we should have scored 15-20 runs more. In the games that we lost in the past, we didn't finish well with the bat. Today was another game we didn't finish well, but I don't want to be too harsh because we have been playing good cricket. We need to work on a few areas. We need to keep our heads high and hope for two good games. It's not going to be easy defending whatever target is set, but that's not an excuse for us. We have played enough cricket to understand the conditions here. He (Buttler) has been in great form. He didn't give us any chances.

It was Buttler again, striking his fifth consecutive fifty as an opener and taking Rajasthan home. He had Rahane's run-a-ball innings for company, and got through some sharp deliveries from Bumrah, who before today had gotten him out on three out of three occasions. The win takes Rajasthan to the fifth position, while Mumbai sit below them, low at sixth.

- RAJ beating MUM tonight means CHN has become the second team to qualify for the Playoffs of T20 League 2018 after HYD.
- PUN and only one among RAJ/KOL can now reach max of 16. MUM & BLR can now finish with a max of 14 points.
- Buttler is the first player to be stranded in the 90s in two successive innings in T20 League

11:34pm local: Ben Stokes is beating Buttler's back like a drum. He's pumped up and rightly so. Make no mistake about this win. This is huge. With both teams tied on 10 points, and RAJ lagging behind on the NRAJ, this match was crucial, bearing the potential to be a sustainer in the competition. And Rajasthan take the honours, sending CHN into the play-offs. Rahane won a good toss, put Mumbai in, strangled them after a good opening stand, and chased it with dew for aid.

Hardik Pandya to Samson, no run, goes back to the off-pace delivery that dips right in front of Samson and deceives him
17.3
6
Hardik Pandya to Samson, SIX, this is a glorious glorious pull. Pandya just stares and walks back to the top of his mark. You do that when you've been pulled off the front foot, and the ball flies over deep mid-wicket
17.2
6
Hardik Pandya to Samson, SIX, that's flown off Samson's bat. He walks stone-faced to the middle of the pitch and punches gloves with Buttler. Slow ball sitting up and Samson mowing it over cow corner has to be a sight to behold

McClenaghan to Buttler, no run, it was outside the tramline, this full ball, but Buttler shuffled across in his crease, so fair enough
16.5

McClenaghan to Samson, 2 wides, banged in too short, Samson doesn't even go for the pull. Stands, and Kishan behind the stumps jumps, gets the tip of his gloves and keeps it to just the single (plus the wide extra)

1
McClenaghan to Buttler, 1 run, bowls full and wide from over the wicket, and Buttler checks the push to long-off. Must have stopped on him

Mitchell McClenaghan [3.0-0-19-0] is back into the attack

See Shane Warne out there in the middle in the time-out. Rohit's animated in his little huddle. Let's see what we have in store.

Time-out! With 25 needed off the last 4 overs, MUM can do with it. Doesn't look like this total will be defended. So much dew that Yadav slipped in the outfield while taking the catch, so imagine the bowlers trying to slip in the slower ones on a flat deck.

Markande to Buttler, 1 run, drags the length back and forces a shimmying Buttler into an unabitious nudge to long-on

15.4
4
Markande to Samson, FOUR, he's joining the party. Very slow from Markande, trying to get Samson to miscue one, but doesn't on this occasion. Makes room, waits for the dip and lofts it over straight mid-on
15.3
1
Markande to Buttler, 1 run, was actually a delivery down leg but Buttler's managed to reverse-sweep it through covers. This man!

Markande to Samson, 1 run, nurdles it to backward square leg
15.1
4
Markande to Samson, FOUR, drifting on leg-stump and it's been cutely paddled away. Runs very fine, through keeper's left and runs for a boundary. Not a great start that by Markande

Mayank Markande [2.0-0-20-0] is back into the attack

Bumrah, Mitch and Pandya each have one over left. It's going to be interesting. Here's MM

14.6
1
Bumrah to Samson, 1 run, back of a length and into the batsman, and Samson's happy to nudge it around for a single through mid-wicket. 37 off 30 now

Buttler is the second player to score 80+ in three successive innings in T20 League after Maxwell in 2014.

14.5
1
Bumrah to Buttler, 1 run, 141ks this time and it bounces over the stumps.. off Buttler's inside edge. Angled it in nicely and then beat him with extra pace. Buttler in no position to even defend. Lays his dead bat out there, and survives

Sorry for that dew pun. we are waiting for the ball btw

14.4
6
Bumrah to Buttler, SIX, and now one better. Swivels this time, and deposits the short ball over long leg this time. Game slipping, or has it already?
14.3
4
Bumrah to Buttler, FOUR, he's making a living out of his hands. Nicely keeps his weight distributed between front and back, so he can go either way. Opens the stance and swats this back of a length delivery over mid-wicket

Jasprit Bumrah [2.0-0-20-1] is back into the attack

51 runs, 6 overs. That's 8.5 runs per over, which is not huge. RAJ should get there as long as Buttler's at the crease

13.5
2
Hardik Pandya to Buttler, 2 runs, backs away and lifts the slower delivery straight down the ground
13.4
4
Hardik Pandya to Buttler, FOUR, front leg is already out of the way, and this fuller delivery goes for a four. Just moved a little to the off-stump and opened his torso side-on, and goes through with the flat mow through long-on
13.3
6
Hardik Pandya to Buttler, SIX, not quite as pretty as those Dhoni's bottom-handed whips over long-on but this is good enough. Carries all the way. Takes on the seam-up length ball and muscles it across the line

Hardik Pandya to Rahane, out Caught by Suryakumar Yadav!! That's a crucial wicket. Rahane's found long-off, where SKY takes the catch and has a pratfall. Just lost his balance a bit and slipped backwards. Was a front footed power-punch but there's not enough wattage in the shot. So much for being a touch player. And here's Pandya picking a wicket just when you least expect him to. Rahane c Suryakumar Yadav b Hardik Pandya 37(36) [4s-4]

Hardik Pandya to Rahane, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!

12.6
0
McClenaghan to Buttler, no run, that's a pretty slow ball but since it's been banged so short, it carries to Ishan Kishan at a good height. Buttler didn't play a great shot here. He's trying to fetch that swat-pull against McClenaghan's angle, and that after giving himself some room. Doesn't connect
12.5
0
McClenaghan to Buttler, no run, shuffles across and tries to pick that shortish delivery on leg-stump. But it's quick, and Buttler's taken a little bit too much time to wind-up on that shot. Dangerously past the glove but he'll live on for now
12.4
4
McClenaghan to Buttler, FOUR, some width on the cutter, and that cut shot creams past Lewis's dive at deep cover. Just slid through the ball there, cutting the trajectory at 90 degrees. Must be a good outfield
12.3
1
McClenaghan to Rahane, 1 run, that was quick. 141ks from McClenaghan and he finds Rahane on the front foot, trying to awkwardly pull this. Gets some thrust from the swivel and picks out a single to deep mid-wicket
12.2
0
McClenaghan to Rahane, no run, now the slower delivery. Swing into a pull but he's no way near connecting that. Past his left shoulder
12.1
0
McClenaghan to Rahane, no run, simply keeps it outside off and Rahane makes life tougher for himself. Backs away and then finds himself embarrasingly reaching for the ball. Couldn't

Fifties in five consecutive inngs in T20s:
V Sehwag for DEL (2012)
H Masakadza for Zim/ Zim XI (2012)
K Akmal for Lahore Whites (2017)
J BUTTLER for RAJ (2018) *

11.6
4
Hardik Pandya to Buttler, FOUR, five fifties in a row for Buttler in T20 League 2018. He's equaled the record of Sehwag, who was harvesting runs for a living back in 2012. And what a way to get there. Backs away, exposes the stumps and slaps the ball from in front of them audaciously. Connects. Anyone who's near as good as Sehwag -- statiscally! -- will connect
11.5
2
Hardik Pandya to Buttler, 2 runs, they've taken two here. An ungainly slog across the line that takes Buttler's under-edge because it was off a slower delivery. Long-on runs across and cuts it off, but he's not quick enough. Rahane and Buttler are
11.4
1
Hardik Pandya to Rahane, 1 run, backward point opened through point
11.3
4
Hardik Pandya to Rahane, FOUR, a helluva lot happened off this one ball. Now Rahane was shaping to scoop, and Hardik Pandya nicely bowls the cutter wider of off-stump. Rahane adjusts though. Slices it, making the most of the room he had, but wasn't in control. Just cleared short third man's right-handed leap
11.2
1
Hardik Pandya to Buttler, 1 run, that was a slower ball but corrupted by some width. Slashes through point
11.1
1
Hardik Pandya to Rahane, 1 run, they're all batting one way. Making room down leg, and Mumbai's bowlers are cramping them up with the angle. Another one here, this time executed by Hardik Pandya. It's a good ol' boring single to long-on

Hardik Pandya [1.0-0-7-0] is back into the attack

10.6
0
Krunal Pandya to Buttler, no run, he's using his arm-balls well. Hurries Buttler with the pace and stalls his room-making down leg. Hit on the thigh. More importantly, it's a dot. 83 off 9 overs
10.5
1
Krunal Pandya to Rahane, 1 run, keeps strike to long-on
10.4
0
Krunal Pandya to Rahane, no run, Krunal has won here. Not with a wicket yet, but with a review. Implored Rohit, convinced him, and the captain yielded. On first sighting, that's going down leg. Arm-ball that Rahane's trying to sweep. Misses and is hit on the front pad. Ball-tracking suggests that the impact is on leg-stump, so with the left-armer's angle from round the wicket, that must be going down. Is actually. Not out. Review wasted.

Review time!

Bumrah to D Arcy Short, 5 wides, now this is a poor follow-up delivery from Bumrah. He just turns back and walks away. Sprays this way down leg, it didn't even land on the 22-yard strip, no chance for Kishan as well

Bumrah to D Arcy Short, FOUR, streaky! Bumrah thought he had his man, so did Rohit. An curling low full toss right at the stumps, Short does extremely well to bring his bat down and squirt it off the inside edge to the fine leg fence. He was a goner had he missed

D Arcy Short and Buttler are at the crease. D Arcy Short is on strike. Bumrah will open the attack
