commentary

Three consecutive defeats will worry HYD but they can live past it, knowing that they've two shots at the final. The one remaining play-off spot will be sealed tomorrow. Mumbai win and they'd ride into the play-offs, courtesy that superlative NRAJ. But it's not over until the last game's done. Join us for the drama. Will see you on the other side of the night, ta-ta!

Lynn - Player of the Match: "It's a great feeling. We're building momentum nicely, so let's see what happens. The wickets in BBL are a bit quicker, so I have to adapt here. I am finding my touch. Sunil is blasting it at the other end, so we've two blokes doing that now. The main thing is to build partnerships. It's good fun (when Sunil is batting). He can take the momentum away from the other team. He keeps it nice and simple, and that seems to be working for him. Couple of wins on the board, and we're not going to change the way we play."

Karthik: "I think all eight teams strive for the play-off spots, so happy to reach there. Things are slowly setlling down. Just the way we are playing shows good character. I'd like to think that (we're peaking at the right time)."

Robin Uthappa: "Well, we didn't think about losing. We did fantastically well with the ball after they were 144-odd in 14 overs. To pull them back to 172 was sensational effort by our bowlers. We have been batting pretty well. I am pretty happy to have gotten a string of scores - I want more getting into the Playoffs. Happy with the way I batted today - playing the sheet anchor's role to Lynny. We are hoping that Punjab does well tomorrow. Let's see what happens."

Williamson: "We were on target for more runs, wicket played really well. We should have scored around the 200-run mark but credit goes to KOL for dragging us back. Lot of credit goes to the the boys in the field. It doesn't matter what happens now, we need to come out and play with freedom in the playoffs. Guys are looking forward to that but having said that we wanted to win this game. We have been fraction off the mark in the matches we have lost. I think we should have got more with the bat, we needed one more partnership but they bowled well in the death. If the batting comes off we will get more with the bat. We have adapted really well to the new surfaces. There are positives even in the losses too. There are not a lot of bad stuff just a few adjustments."

D Karthik in successful run chases this T20 League:
35(29)*vs BLR
42(23)* vs RAJ
23(10) vs BLR - out penultimate over
45(18)*vs CHN
41(31)*vs RAJ
26(22)*vs HYD

11:44pm local: That blistering start provided by Dhawan and Goswami comes down to nothing. Not that HYD were never in the game, as 60/0 in the powerplay will suggest, but Dhawan and Williamson's wicket pared them back. A four-wicket last over meant they missed out on the slog overs, and then Narine unsettled them at the top, ensuring in the process that the momentum stays on KOL's side. Lynn hit his stride with a well-compiled 55 and Uthappa's 45 all but sailed them through. Has to be mentioned that Rashid had dropped the latter off his own bowling on 11.

1
Brathwaite to Karthik, 1 run, KOL make it to the play-offs! DK hits the winning runs, working this full toss to mid-on

We can't have more drama here. We don't deserve.

19.3
0
Brathwaite to Karthik, no run, now a dot ball. Hah, Karthik's missed this fullish one outside off. Touch late on it, you can say

Shubman Gill, right handed bat, comes to the crease

Gill was destined to come out and bat, it seems

19.2
0
Brathwaite to Nitish Rana, out Caught by Bhuvneshwar!! Now this finds the fielder. More like a hoick-pull that Nitish Rana's fallen to. Takes the short ball on, swivels into an attempted glory hit and succumbs to the placement of the fielder at fine leg. Nitish Rana c Bhuvneshwar b Brathwaite 7(5) [4s-1]

Brathwaite to Nitish Rana, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!

19.1
4
Brathwaite to Nitish Rana, FOUR, tries to bowl very full and wide from round the wicket but Nitish Rana's reached out to it. Throws his hands, slices it away, and it's been hit with power. Skittles away, beating Sandeep's dive. Scores level

Carlos Brathwaite [2.0-0-16-1] is back into the attack

Not really a match worthy of a last-over finish but here we are, trying to make sense of this and life at the same time. Umm, okay, back to cricket. Williamson has a chat with Brathwaite, who's bowling this over. 5 to win

18.6
0
Bhuvneshwar to Karthik, no run, inswinging low full toss that's been squirted out straight to backward point. No run there
18.5
1
Bhuvneshwar to Nitish Rana, 1 run, makes room and goes with BK's angle from over the wicket to the left-hander. Carves a single over cover-point. 5 off 7
18.4
1
Bhuvneshwar to Karthik, 1 run, slow again, and this time DK connects. Dragged off the under-edge to deep mid-wicket. KOL a maximum away
18.3
0
Bhuvneshwar to Karthik, no run, doesn't read the slow ball. Banged in on a back of a length, and it doesn't quite bounce enough to connect to Karthik's premeditated pull
18.2
2
Bhuvneshwar to Karthik, 2 runs, on the move across his stumps, is Karthik. Works that to long-on and pinches a couple

Strike back with Karthik. Expect a hurricane finish? 9 off 11.

18.1
1
Bhuvneshwar to Nitish Rana, 1 run, slow low full toss on leg-stump from Bhuvneshwar first up, which is ticked to fine leg

Bhuvneshwar Kumar [3.0-0-28-0] is back into the attack

10 needed off 2 overs. And I'm out of filler freeformsbetween the overs

17.6
1
S Kaul to Nitish Rana, 1 run, doesn't quite get the yorker right to the left-hander but the low full toss does the job from over the wicket. Glided to third man. 2/26 for Kaul

Nitish Rana, left handed bat, comes to the crease

17.4
0
S Kaul to A Russell, out Caught by Manish Pandey!! Russell has been baited here. All he got until now was a barrage of incoming short balls, so he was going to want to take full toll of this one. Slogs across, totally misreading the slower delivery and offering a steepler to long-on. Manish had to come in a few paces but he was right under the ball. Brilliantly taken. A Russell c Manish Pandey b S Kaul 4(4) [4s-1]

S Kaul to A Russell, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!

17.3
4
S Kaul to A Russell, FOUR, that top-edge to fine leg has arrived, beaten Sandeep Sharma and run away for a boundary. Sandeep, running to his right, leapt in front, went two-handed but the ball just slid through, deflecting to the ropes. 13 needed, only
17.2
0
S Kaul to A Russell, no run, short ball. A Russell just opens his stance and tries to pull. Never in position. First Brathwaite, and now Kaul -- they are bowling short at him

A new helmet for Russell

17.1
1
S Kaul to Karthik, 1 run, misfield at extra cover, so this drive -- played off a slower delivery -- finds a single to long-off

Siddarth Kaul [3.0-0-18-1] is back into the attack

18 off 3 overs. It's time to switch sides, you HYD fans.

Most runs scored off Rashid Khan in T20 League:

43 off 18 C Gayle
39 off 17 M Vohra
38 off 25 A Rayudu

16.6
0
Brathwaite to A Russell, no run, that's rotational dynamics put to waste. He doesn't connect. Stays leg-side and swats his bat around, hoping to connect the pull (and secretly hoping for the top-edge to fly over fine leg)
16.5
1
Brathwaite to Karthik, 1 run, low full toss clipped to long-on. 18 off 19
16.4
4
Brathwaite to Karthik, FOUR, slower delivery sitting up, and the perils of having DK at the death. Hits the pull flat over the mid-wicket region. It's racing away.. it's a four!
16.4
1
Brathwaite to Karthik, wide, that's full but sprayed down leg

Andre Russell, right handed bat, comes to the crease

16.3
0
Brathwaite to Uthappa, out Caught by Goswami!! Brathwaite is riding a horse in celebration. Or something like that. He's undone Uthappa with a short ball. Weight not quite back, the bounce getting big on the batsman, and we have a top-edge, that the keeper runs around and collects it near say leg gully. Uthappa c Goswami b Brathwaite 45(34) [4s-3 6s-2]

Brathwaite to Uthappa, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!

16.2
1
Brathwaite to Karthik, 1 run, pitches this slower delivery full outside off, and DK nicely waits for a carve along the ground through covers
16.1
1
Brathwaite to Uthappa, leg byes, 1 run, jumps out of the crease to Brathwaite, who's clocked 132ks. Hits Uthappa's thigh and concedes an extra

Carlos Brathwaite [1.0-0-9-0] is back into the attack

Time-out! KOL fans were bawling their eyes out for boundaries, and here we have, two sixes and a four in two overs. KOL now need 26 off 24, which sounds easy peasy.

15.6
1
Rashid Khan to Uthappa, 1 run, trying to work a single through mid-wicket but there's some spin on this leg break. Elicits a leading edge that falls in no-man's land around backward point
15.5
6
Rashid Khan to Uthappa, SIX, only fair that Rashid takes the brunt. It's outside off but it's enough for Uthappa. Enough full, enough close. Slogged over deep mid-wicket
15.4
4
Rashid Khan to Uthappa, FOUR, overpitched, and that's flying over Uthappa's scalp. Scooped away straight down the ground
15.3
1
Rashid Khan to Karthik, 1 run, this was out in Test cricket, but there's no FSL. Makes Karthik reach out to a wide googly, gets the inside edge popping in the air. And poof, he's safe. To top it all, he gets a single for it

Kolkata need 38 runs in 28 balls

15.2
2
Rashid Khan to Karthik, 2 runs, DK has exploited the vacant mid-wicket region like a warlord. Pricks a leg-stump googly there, and pushes Uthappa into the second
15.1
1
Rashid Khan to Uthappa, 1 run, reverse-swept to short third man for a sharp single

Rashid Khan [3.0-0-16-0] is back into the attack

KOL have now ensured that their net run rate will be above RAJ

14.6
2
Bhuvneshwar to Karthik, 2 runs, a direct-hit from extra cover but Uthappa has made it back into the bowler's end with a sharp second. Squeeze-driven by DK that, as BK went full and wide
14.5
2
Bhuvneshwar to Karthik, 2 runs, DK isn't in control again. Almost like in a Bombay local. But he's doing the job. Slower ball chipped it uppishly through covers for two precious runs
14.4
6
Bhuvneshwar to Karthik, SIX, top-edges are the new first aid in cricket. Didn't KOL need that. A back of a length delivery going down leg-side, DK was late on the slog-sweep and ushered a top-edge over fine leg. It was way into the crowd, trust me
14.3
0
Bhuvneshwar to Karthik, no run, now a back of a length delivery that hurries onto Karthik, and miscues his late pull to mid-wicket. The runs are on snooze
14.2
0
Bhuvneshwar to Karthik, no run, this was the fastish inswinger -- reverse? -- that hits DK on the pad. Certainly going down, DK tries to go for the extra, only for Bhuvneshwar to run across and dislodge the bails. DK is in. DK was always not out

Been 14 balls since a boundary

14.1
1
Bhuvneshwar to Uthappa, 1 run, slow and low full toss clipped to deep mid-wicket

Bhuvneshwar Kumar [2.0-0-17-0] is back into the attack

That last over has changed things. The famous HYD choke is on.

13.6
0
S Kaul to Karthik, no run, a misfield at extra cover means Karthik gets the single. No. Scratch that. Mid-off is there, backing up to deny Karthik's punch any runs. 2 runs and a wicket off this over
13.5
1
S Kaul to Uthappa, 1 run, intended yorker that's a low full toss. But a low full toss alright. Blocked off the toe-end, at the cost of his backbone's comfort zone
13.4
1
S Kaul to Karthik, 1 run, shunted to point. Running it into the ground and then picking the single off the ball's rolling momentum to point

D Karthik in successful run chases this T20 League:

23(10) vs BLR - out penultimate over
45(18)*vs CHN

13.3
0
S Kaul to Karthik, no run, beaten. Short of length, Karthik is in no position to get behind it. Dabbles at it and is defeated by the ball straightening a touch off the deck
13.2
0
S Kaul to Karthik, no run, blocked to mid-wicket

Dinesh Karthik, right handed bat, comes to the crease

13.1
0
S Kaul to Chris Lynn, out Caught by Manish Pandey!! Pandey's run in an arc at long-on and taken an in-out-in catch right at the boundary ropes. It's been referred upstairs, with the soft signal being out. It is out indeed. Just one of Chris Lynn's slogs that goes wrong. Hits it flat and across, seemed to have miscued it -- triggered by the lack of room -- and there Pandey was, running and plucking it out. Realizes he's going to run over the ropes, parries the throw in, hops out, hops back in and then almost steals that out of the hands of Rashid, who was lurking around. Rashid's hands cupped Pandey's -- so close. Chris Lynn c Manish Pandey b S Kaul 55(43) [4s-4 6s-3]

S Kaul to Chris Lynn, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!

Siddarth Kaul [2.0-0-16-0] is back into the attack

4
Shakib to Uthappa, FOUR, now uses the pace and splits short third man and backward point. Played that delightfully late, with a nice clean lean towards off-side
11.3
6
Shakib to Uthappa, SIX, he's like a scoop of butter today. Reads the length so early that he has the time to get under a Shakib darter. Lifts it over long-on
11.2

10.5
6
Sandeep Sharma to Chris Lynn, SIX, that's just a blatant display of biceps. Comes on the front foot and scythes this length ball over cow corner. Trust me when I say this: it was hammered away disdainfully with a torso torque

10.3
2
Sandeep Sharma to Uthappa, 2 runs, fullish ball clipped to backward square leg
10.2
0
Sandeep Sharma to Uthappa, no run, now that beat Uthappa even before he realized. Slower ball, Uthappa shapes to swat that away and then doesn't pursue the shot. Way early into the shot, which ironically allowed him the time to makeshift the leave too

1
Rashid Khan to Chris Lynn, 1 run, fetches the ball from outside off and swipes it to fine leg to keep strike
8.5
1
Rashid Khan to Uthappa, 1 run, Rashid puts it down. 'Should have allowed one of the ring fielders to go for the catch' opines my colleague Pratyush Sinha. *Hear, Hear* Always tough for the bowler running back. A mighty heave-ho from Uthappa, all in hope. Mistimed it very badly and got a thick top-edge on that, the ball hung in the air for an eternity and lured everyone on and off the field. Rashid says mine, runs back and gets defeated by the swirling motion of the ball. Oh dear!

0
Rashid Khan to Uthappa, no run, appeal from the fielders and, of course, the bowler; nothing from the umpire and rightly so. A quicker slider, came back in sharply and hit Uthappa on the thigh pad, the weight of the batsman was going back and in an attempt to cut he lost the balance.
