commentary

What might be going through the Mumbai camp right now? All those final over finishes? Games that they should have won but lost? It will take some time for them to process this season and they will surely introspect and comeback strong next season. For now, it is time to switch our focus on PUN and RAJ. Both teams are still in the hunt and it is the former facing CHN in a must-win game. Switch tabs to catch all the action. And the cricket dose does not end there. We have a special Cricbuzz Live analysis show before the playoffs begin and it is tomorrow. Do remember to tune in to that. Until next time, goodbye and take care!

The Kotla surface was not batsman friendly and Delhi after defending a total against Chennai in the previous game opted to bat, Rishabh Pant, the orange cap holder, ensured that his side post a fighting total with a 44-ball 64. It was then upto the bowlers, especially the leg-spin duo of Mishra and Lamichhane to bowl Delhi to a win and the pair did a commanding job, 8-0-55-6. But Mumbai batsmen also played some reckless shots to throw their wickets. Lewis gave them the start they needed, but once spin was introduced they capitulated. Cutting kept them in the game with his big-hitting but 18 off the final over was too big an ask for the Australian all-rounder as well. Credit to Shreyas Iyer, who went with Harshal Patel instead of Plunkett and the Indian pacer kept his nerve and delivered for his team.

MUM's last over losses in T20 League 2018:
One ball v CHN, Mumbai
Last ball v HYD, Hyderabad
Last ball v DEL, Mumbai
Two balls v RAJ, Jaipur
14 runs v BLR, Bengaluru
11 runs v DEL, Delhi

First time Rohit Sharma has failed to score 300 runs in an T20 League season

Ufff! Let us all take a breather first. What a game we witnessed! The defending champions, three time winners Mumbai don't make it to the playoffs. Superb performance from Delhi. Not many had given them a chance before this game considering their form and how Mumbai play in crunch games. So, to turn up and knock the defending champions out, has to be the most satisfying end to their season.

Harshal Patel to Bumrah, out Caught by Boult!! Mumbai have been knocked out. Cutting and Rohit take a moment to soak in what has transpired. The Mumbai skipper then gathers himself and shakes hands with his team mates. It is only the fourth time that Mumbai have not made the playoffs. Some happy faces in the Delhi camp as they finish with back to back wins. Another slower delivery and Bumrah had to go for it, miscued it towards long-on and Boult ran in to complete the catch. Bumrah c Boult b Harshal Patel 0(1)

Harshal Patel to Cutting, out Caught by Maxwell!! Patel pumps his fist. Cutting hangs his head down and trudges off. The Mumbai supporters are in shock. That must be the match? The slower delivery and it was right in the arc, but the slow nature made Cutting generate all the power and he could only heave it as far as deep mid-wicket. Maxwell keeps his cool and takes it calmly. Settled nicely under it. Cutting c Maxwell b Harshal Patel 37(20) [4s-2 6s-3]

Harshal Patel to Cutting, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!

Iyer has a word with Patel. Field being changed. Pressure on!

19.1
6
Harshal Patel to Cutting, SIX, oh my! Cutting has got the best possible start to the over. Patel does not have the pace to bowl short and it sits up nicely for Cutting, who swivels across and sends the pull soaring over the long leg fence

Harshal Patel [2.0-0-22-1] is back into the attack

Jasprit Bumrah, right handed bat, comes to the crease

Mumbai need 18 off the final over. Who will Iyer go to? It is going to be Harshal Patel. Cutting is the man for Mumbai. Some happy faces in the Mumbai dugout. That is good to see. Here we go..

Boult to Markande, out Bowled!! Bowled 'im. Top over under pressure from the Kiwi. Mumbai could get only 5 runs off it. Round the wicket and though he misses the yorker length, his pace makes up for it, Markande does not lay bat on the pacy full toss and has his off-stump uprooted. Markande b Boult 3(10)

Boult to Markande, THAT'S OUT!! Bowled!!

Markande has a free swing. It won't matter if he gets out while trying the big shot.

18.5
1
Boult to Cutting, 1 run, just a single. Another low full toss outside off, Cutting slices it on the bounce to deep backward point. Boult has bowled to his field and needs to finish it well
18.4
2
Boult to Cutting, 2 runs, very casual from Plunkett. He does not bother to cut the angle and ends up gifting the second. Full toss slanted outside off, Cutting slices the loft over extra cover and Plunkett allows the second

Pant seemed to have hurt himself. Limping back towards his mark.

18.3
1
Boult to Markande, 1 run, direct hit and that was over. Cutting went for the single and he was not even in the frame. Full delivery and Markande digs the drive out to cover, the pair had to go and Shaw was the fielder. Took his time and fired a throw at the striker's end. Missed and Mumbai stay alive. Pant also came charging forward and slipped while collecting the ball. Had he stayed on his feet and collected it cleanly, Cutting was still gone
18.2
0
Boult to Markande, no run, round the wicket and a dot. He cramps Markande for room as he backs away, the steer to third man does not come off and the duo are not going to risk a bye
18.1
1
Boult to Cutting, 1 run, yes, that's one way to keep Cutting quiet. Yorker angled outside off, all Cutting can do is squeeze it out to long-off. He takes the single but a bit relcutantly

So, it is 23 off 12. The season is on the line and we all know how dangerous Mumbai can be from such situations. Cutting looks calm and composed and that is a good sign for the Mumbai camp. Boult to bowl out. He starts from over the wicket..

17.6

Plunkett to Markande, no run, denies the single. Rightly so. Back of a length delivery, Markande backs away and steers it to third man, he wanted the single but is sent back quite early

1
Plunkett to Cutting, 1 run, low full toss and Cutting can only biff it to long-on, happy to take the single and leave Markande with a single delivery
17.4
0
Plunkett to Cutting, no run, slower short ball and Cutting is deceived, through the pull early and it is a dot for Delhi
17.3
4
Plunkett to Cutting, FOUR, 14 runs off the first three balls. Pressure. Pressure! Once again Plunkett goes full with a pacy delivery, Cutting says thank you very much and smashes the leather off the ball, right over Markande and giving long-on no chance. Even Rohit could afford a clap with that boundary
17.2
6
Plunkett to Cutting, SIX, wow! That's gone a long way. This match ain't over. Mumbai's season ain't over. Until Cutting is there. Plunkett is bowling length and Cutting is waiting for it, muscles the loft well over the long-on fence
17.1
4
Plunkett to Cutting, FOUR, good way to start the over. Shade too straight from Plunkett, on off and middle, Cutting gets inside the line and whips it backward of square leg. He ensured that he got it past the man at short fine leg

Liam Plunkett [2.0-0-12-0] is back into the attack

38 off 18. Still possible but Cutting has to do everything here. He can't rely on his partners.

16.6
1
Boult to Cutting, 1 run, direct hit and Markande was a goner. Low full toss and Cutting shuffled across and tried to help it round the corner, found the fielder at short fine and pushed Markande for the single, he wanted to retain the strike. Markande was not even in the frame as Lamichhane missed the sticks
16.5
6
Boult to Cutting, SIX, that's more like it. Right in the slot and it is a 83 meter six from Cutting. Just a bit of shuffle to off and got nicely underneath the length ball, the big forearms then took over to smash it over long-on
16.4
2
Boult to Cutting, 2 runs, dropped? Yes. Just got his fingertips to it. The slower delivery is slanted in and Cutting uses the angle to heave it over backward square, Patel charges across to his right and puts in the slide, only gets a finger to it
16.3

Boult to Cutting, no run, off-speed delivery that refuses to bounce, Cutting has a swipe across the line and the ball sneaks underneath the bat

16.1
1
Boult to Cutting, 1 run, round the wicket and angled in, Cutting eases it past Boult and down to long-off

Trent Boult [2.0-0-18-0] is back into the attack

Mishra and Lamichhane together: 8-0-55-6. That is the match right there. The two leggies spun a web around the Mumbai batting line-up. Rohit sits motionless in the dugout. His team needs a miracle to chase 49 off 24 balls.

15.6
2
Lamichhane to Markande, 2 runs, another googly and Markande reads it off the surface, nudges it into the on-side and Cutting pushes for the second. Plunkett had some ground to cover and they get it with ease

Mishra to Markande, no run, Mishra is done for the day. What a spell! The veteran showing he still has it in him. His performance in the last few games has been top drawer. Today ends with 4-0-19-3. This is a fraction short and Markande chops the cut towards backward point

Mayank Markande, right handed bat, comes to the crease

Timeout! Delhi might have just knocked Mumbai out of the tournament. All their key batsmen are back in the hut and only the bowlers are to follow. Cutting the last recognized batsman left and he has the hopes of a million MUM fans. Delhi are three wickets away from pulling off another win.

If MUM doesn't qualify, this will be the first time when Rohit will fail to score 300 runs in a season
333 runs in 2017 was the previous lowest

Mishra to Hardik Pandya, out Caught by (sub)Rahul Tewatia!! Is that the game? Ishan Kishan thinks so as he has his hands on his head. One of the MUM cheerleaders did not like Pandya's shot selection either. Needless from Pandya. Last over for Mishra and he should have tried to play him out, but that is not the sort of batsman he is. Saw the floaty delivery outside off and went for the big loft downtown, sliced it off the outer half to backward point, where Tewatia picks up his second catch. Mishra to Cutting, no run, premeditation from Cutting. Bent his back knee even before the ball was bowled and attempted the paddle, the leg-break spun across the bat face. Smart bowling from Mishra, kept it out of Cutting's reach

Mishra to Cutting, no run, flighted on the stumps, Cutting watchfully knocks it back to Mishra

Amit Mishra [3.0-0-18-2] is back into the attack

Harshal Patel to Hardik Pandya, no run, walked across his stumps and missed the glance, has a look at the umpire for a wide and gets nothing in return. Went too far towards off and that made Nandan rule in favour of Patel

Ben Cutting, right handed bat, comes to the crease

Harshal Patel to Rohit, out Caught by Boult!! It is the Maxwell-Boult partnership again. Seemed like a replay of the Pollard dismissal. The duo even have a laugh together. This was much more easily done by Maxwell. The third umpire has a check and there's nothing to overturn the soft signal. Another failure for Rohit. He's had a terrible season. More importantly leaves his team in a spot of bother. The slower off-cutter grips the surface and deceives Rohit compeletly, he was into the shot early and went through with it, the bottom hand comes off and the ball skies towards long-on, Maxwell runs across and takes the catch, but with the momentum taking him out, he lobs the ball to Boult, who came running from long-off. Rohit c Boult b Harshal Patel 13(11) [4s-1]

Harshal Patel to Rohit, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!

13.4
0
Harshal Patel to Rohit, no run, slower length ball and Rohit taps it softly in front of mid-wicket
13.4
2
Harshal Patel to Hardik Pandya, 2 wides, excellent stop by Pant. Poor from Patel though. Splays it well down leg, no chance for Pandya to reach that, Pant dived full length to his left and got a glove to it, saved three
13.3
0
Harshal Patel to Hardik Pandya, no run, dot. Delhi need a bit of those to keep the partnership in check. Nothing but a back of a length delivery which Pandya looks to run it down to third man, misses and is beaten on the outside edge
13.2
1
Harshal Patel to Rohit, 1 run, full and around off, Rohit wrists it down to long-on
13.1
2
Harshal Patel to Rohit, 2 runs, intelligent cricket from Rohit. Saw no one at mid-wicket and nudged the slower delivery in that region, called for two as soon as he played it and Pandya was more than happy to oblige. Easy!

Harshal Patel [1.0-0-17-0] is back into the attack

What that big over has done is it has brought the asking rate to below 9 and the pair can take some more time to pace this chase. Rohit has a word with Pandya and it will surely be to bat as deep as possible.

12.6
4
Boult to Hardik Pandya, FOUR, 17 off the over and that releases the pressure that Mishra and Lamichhane built up. Full and on the pads, easy pickings for Pandya, who flicks it nonchalantly past the diving short fine leg fielder. It was just the matter of putting it in the gap and Pandya did it to perfection
12.5
1
Boult to Rohit, 1 run, off-cutter angled across the right-hander, Rohit drives on the up to deep extra cover
12.4
5
Boult to Hardik Pandya, 5 runs, needless from the Delhi skipper. Should have been a dot and instead it is five bonus runs. Slower delivery that holds up and Pandya has to check his back foot punch to cover, Iyer sees a backing up Rohit and has shy at the bowler's end. The backing up is not great and even though Harshal Patel tried to flick the ball in play, he was in contact with the ad cushions
12.3
1
Boult to Rohit, 1 run, slower ball on the stumps, chipped through the vacant mid-wicket region
12.2
4
Boult to Rohit, FOUR, there's the boundary for the over Mumbai need. Low full toss outside off, Rohit crouches a bit and uses the pace of Boult, opens the bat face and steers it between backward point and short third man
12.2
1
Boult to Rohit, wide, slow, wide yorker gone wrong for Boult, sprays it too far across and Rohit lets it pass
12.1
1
Boult to Hardik Pandya, 1 run, back of a length on the hips, tucked through mid-wicket to bring up Mumbai's 100. 75 off 47 needed

Trent Boult [1.0-0-1-0] is back into the attack

11.6
1
Lamichhane to Hardik Pandya, 1 run, that left shoulder will certainly be tested with the dive. Pushed it through and got the ball to grip, Pandya squirts it off the outer half to the left of Iyer at cover, Rohit called for the single and had to put in the dive to make his ground. Direct hit might have made things more interesting

Third umpire called in for a run-out check. Delhi is not too confident. Rohit put in the dive. And he's made it in.. Not Out!

Lamichhane to Hardik Pandya, 1 run, darted into the pads and Pandya whips it with a lot of bottom hand to deep mid-wicket
11.2
4
Lamichhane to Hardik Pandya, FOUR, hammered! Pressure on the teenager. Lamichhane tries to fire it full and outside off, Pandya did well to get under that and drill the drive through extra cover. No chance for Boult from long-off to cut it off
11.1
6
Lamichhane to Hardik Pandya, SIX, but that is not the way Hardik thinks.. Anything with flight and in his arc, Hardik will go for it, through the line and with a clean bat swing sends it soaring over the long-on fence, into the second tier

These two need to arrest the slide first before taking on the target and with the ability they have even 70 off the final five overs is not impossible.

Lamichhane to Pollard, out Caught by Boult!! Wowza! Maxi-Boult combo pulls off a replica of Mayank-Tiwary's catch. But hang on, they have referred it to the third umpire. No issues with the front foot and no issues with the catch too, looks pretty clean and Pollard can continue his long walk back to the pavilion. Two in two for Delhi and what a comeback. Jitters in the Mumbai camp as they lose their fourth. Tossed up on the stumps, Pollard lifts it with a straight bat. Doesn't get enough power to clear long-on. Maxi stays at the edge of the ropes, grabs it and realises that he is going over the ropes. Throws the ball to Boult - who was waiting to gobble it up. Talk about tag-team effort. Outstanding. Plunkett to Lewis, no run, nasty! A rip-roaring short ball from Plunkett and Lewis takes a blow on the back of his helmet. Kicked off from a length and Lewis took his eyes off the ball on the pull. Cops a blow and he's in some discomfort. The DEL players gang up to check on him and the physio rushes out. Looks like just a change of helmet for Lewis, nothing alarming. Ready to resume

1
Plunkett to Pollard, 1 run, in the airrr once again and another drop. Dropped catches are contagious. One more lifeline for Pollard. Plunkett had his hands on his head as Abhishek Sharma grasses a difficult chance. Full and tailed away late, Pollard was lunging forward and ekes out a leading edge which flew to point. Sharma dived across to his left, got both hands but the ball pops out

Mishra to Ishan Kishan, out Caught by Vijay Shankar!! First ball wicket after the break. Mishra strikes gold. But wouldn't have been possible without Vijay Shankar - who has pulled off a blinder at long-on. Compensates for his earlier blip where he dropped Lewis at cover. Flighted teasingly from Mishra, Kishan took the bait -- had to because he was struggling a bit. Meets the pitch in a hurry and smashed it flat towards long-on. Vijay Shankar at the edge of the ropes, judges it well and clings onto it above his head. Made sure, he didn't topple over the ropes despite one leg balancing in the air. Amit Mishra, right-arm leg break, comes into the attack

Time for the first strategic time-out of the innings. Mumbai off to a flying start with Lewis donning the aggressor's role. Iyer has been shuffling his bowlers - who have been pretty poor with the new ball. Mumbai will hope for these two to carry on.

Plunkett to Ishan Kishan, 1 run, direct-hit at the non-striker's end and Kishan was struggling. Flat-batted along the turf to mid-off, the fielder collects the ball and rifles a throw, misses the target and I reckon Kishan would've been short of his crease
