Delhi vs Kolkata - 26th Match

Series: Indian T20 League, 2018
Venue: Feroz Shah Kotla, Delhi
Date: 27 April 2018

Kolkata 164/9 (20 Ovs) RR: 8.20 | Delhi won by 55 runs

commentary

So, DEL back on track. Four points in their kitty now. The Double Dynamites - Shaw and Iyer exploded at the top and that propelled DEL to a winning score on a wicket that was slightly sluggish. KOL never really were in the chase and it all ended in a 55-run loss for them. The dropped catches in the first innings from KOL also would also be a concern for them. Lots of ponder over for KOL but Delhi after a lot of thinking have finally got it right. This is Kumar Abhisekh Das signing off on behalf of Raju Peethala, Pradeep Krishnamurthy, Hariprasad Sadanandan, Varun Dikshit and Vinod. You peeps put on your thinking cap as CHN take on MUM tomorrow.

STAT: Biggest wins for DEL in T20 League (by runs):
97 v RPs, Pune, 2017
67 v RAJ, Delhi, 2010
55 v KOL, Delhi, 2018
51 v PUN, Delhi, 2017

Shreyas Iyer, Man of the Match and winning skipper: Obviously a great feeling getting on the winning side. It is an amazing feeling winning my first game as a skipper. All of us contributed for this win. We wanted to bowl first. So, a nice toss to lose. It gave the batsman the freedom to express themselves. He (Prithvi) has been really batting well since the start of the season. Even in the practice games before the T20 League. It is always important how he is starting off. Colin Munro at the top with him added 50 runs and that benefitted for the team. Liam Plunkett is our goto guy. He came up to me and told me he wants to bowl the 16th or 17th over, whichever over he bowled. And I really like it when my bowlers come up to me and talk. It is really good.

Trent Boult (purple cap) - Runs on the board, credit to the new captain who added many partnerships and got a big score. We bowled according to the plan and it was job well done. The wicket was a lot quicker today, we didn't plan to bowl those many short balls. We were not too predictable to a guy like Russell. He (Iyer) batted tremendously well, some good communication with the experienced guys and he will be very stoked with what happened in the middle.

Dinesh Karthik - "220 is a big task, if the dew had come in, it would have made it easy for us but today was that sort of a day where there was no dew. I thought they really batted much better than us. If Russell starts hitting, he gives us hope but he is also a human being. We need to put our hands up and say we didn't play good cricket. Three spinners doesn't generally go for a lot of runs. I am comfortable in bowling them in the powerplay. I think we really need to wake up in the fielding department. We need to improve our fielding standard and that should turn around the things for us".

And when KOL came out to bat, Maxwell picked up Lynn in the second over of the innings. That was followed by a plan to bowl short. The speedsters - Boult, Avesh Khan and Plunkett put the plan into place and picked up wickets in the middle overs. Kolkata were always behind the 8-ball and it was only Russell's little cameo which ignited a few hopes but they were quashed out soon. In the end, a huge win for Delhi by 55 runs. Stay tuned for the presentations.

The Delhi camp is up and happy. Little smiles come up on the faces of Delhi players as well. They know the importance of this win. A loss here and it would have been a dead end in the journey of T20 League 2018 but DEL are still alive. They scored 219 batting first and that I guess set the game for them. First Prithvi Shaw, then Shreyas Iyer ensured that DEL put it across the KOL side. 29 runs of the last over by Iyer off Mavi was the telling blow. It just put it beyond KOL it seemed.

Boult to Johnson, FOUR, slogged away off a length ball towards the deep mid-wicket fence but does not matter. DEL win this by 55 runs. This has been a superb show from DEL, ably led by their new skipper - Shreyas Iyer. Two vital points and KOL have been jolted badly by this

Maxwell to Chawla, out Caught by Munro!! The DEL boys can do nothing wrong tonight. Slog swept and the man at deep backward square leg jumps up and grabs it with the tip of his fingers. Superb take at the boundary line. That was hit flat and well but the fielder did well to keep his balance at the fence and grab it. In the end, the momentum on the shot almost meant the ball would explode through his fingers but it did not. Chawla c Munro b Maxwell 2(4)

Avesh Khan to A Russell, out Bowled!! The base of the off-pole has been struck hard. Yorkerish delivery and the batsman trying to create room, misses it. Avesh Khan gets carried away as well after the wicket. Shouts a mouthful at the batsman. Can't interpret that. But that is GAME.SET.MATCH for DEL. First Shaw, then Iyer, now Avesh Khan. Mishra to Shivam Mavi, out Bowled!! This has been a nightmare. Finally, it ends for Shivam Mavi. That was a slow googly, the batsman was too early into the pull and misses it. The ball takes its time to tickle the leg-stick. To make matters worse for KOL, maiden over from Mishy! The three dots also would not have helped the equation for KOL. Shivam Mavi, right handed bat, comes to the crease

Time-out! The KOL unit need a miracle. They can spell it as R.U.S.S.E.L.L as well if they want to but they know this is going to be tough. DEL on the other hand are indifferent to the fat lady singing from a distance. They know the West Indian can turn it around even if 79 off 27 balls looks almost improbable.

15.3
0
Mishra to A Russell, out Shubman Gill Run Out!! The young man is gone. The calling between the two had been poor and Shubman Gill to suffer. That was chopped away into the off-side, sans any timing and despite not a great throw and desperate dive, Gill does not make it. The keeper did well to whip the bails off. Shubman Gill run out (Shreyas Iyer/Pant) 37(29) [4s-3 6s-1]

Mishra to A Russell, no run, Appeal for a stumping. The leggie turned away past a defending blade. The keeper gathered it and whipped the bails off. The back foot though was in the crease. The batsman will survive this and he does. That was some sharp turn for the veteran spinner

Appeal for a stumping. The leggie turned away past a defending blade. The keeper gathered it and whipped the bails off. The back foot though was in the crease. A Russell dragged it back. He should be safe. Though one of the angles did give the impression it might have been in the air. But NOT OUT!!!

1
Boult to Shubman Gill, 1 run, another dicey single attempted and completed. That was short, wide as well, chopped away and the man at point was on to it in a flash. He released the throw but missed the target. Interestingly, Russell would have made it

12.4
1
Boult to A Russell, 1 run, almost a run-out. Lots of yes and no and in the end, an overthrow to get Russell off strike. He tapped the ball away to point, went a few steps down the track and then was sent back. The throw came in and Russell had to stretch back into the crease
12.3
4
Boult to A Russell, FOUR, not all brawn with this man. Stands up and steers the ball over point for a four. That runs away into the fence. The ball was short and outside off, the room was there to send it away

6
Avesh Khan to A Russell, SIX, Russell will go down fighting. Correction - swinging.. That was short, at the body from round the wicket but Russell was ready. Opens his stance, and then muscles the ball over the on-side for a huge six. The second tier stand at deep square leg was peppered
11.6

10.3
4
Plunkett to A Russell, FOUR, no fooling around this time! Stays back for the slower delivery and then thumps the ball away between mid-wicket and long-on for a four. That was out of the top-drawer from Russell

10.1
1

Boult to Narine, out Caught by Shreyas Iyer!! Boult seems to have come out with a clear plan against Narine which is to bowl short and only short.
