commentary

So that is the end of a good first game of the double-header. MUM and RAJ are waiting to entertain us at the Wankhede. Hop tabs to catch all the action. See you there!

Ambati Rayudu (Man of the Match): "It's a good position to bat (opening) in T20s. I am enjoying it right now. There's no secret. We are backing ourselves and communicating very well (about batting with Watson). He has been of great help to me. I was ready to open. If you are good at 4-day cricket, you can bat at any position. I am really happy to be back in the Indian team, hopefully I will do well there."

MS Dhoni: "I thought the ball will swing more in the second half than what it did for us. The swing was not there, that was a surprise. We got off to a good start. Watson and Rayudu hit boundaries whenever there was an opportunity. Otherwisee 180 against HYD would have been a tough chase. Even before T20 League started I had to make space for Rayudu, because he is somebody I rate very highly. He can play both the fast bowlers and spinners very well. Most teams look to exploit the opener with spin bowling. He is someone who doesn't look like a big hitter but almost clears the field every time he plays the big shot. My plan was to make Rayudu open and if Kedar was fit, he will bat at 4 or 5. We keep the number of overs remaining as the mark and we decide the No. 4 batsman based on that. Unfortunately we played one game in Chennai, but the response we got from Pune was very good. The fans watch the game despite the stadium being quite far."

HYD bowlers looked ineffective for once in the tournament. They had no answers to the assault from Rayudu and Watson. The ball wasn't swinging much, unlike the first half, they would say, but credit to the CHN openers for a grand show. The HYD bowlers were never allowed to settle. Rayudu in particular was audacious with the way he moved around at the crease and toyed with the bowlers. A good toss to win for CHN. The new ball bowlers got them off to a brilliant start, they leaked runs in the middle overs, but managed to keep the score under 180. Batting is their strength and they didn't disappointment. HYD may have lost, but they may be quietly happy with the fact that the bowlers came under the pump. They would want to cover all bases before the play-offs.

Bhuvneshwar to Rayudu, 1 run, that's it! Maiden T20 League hundred. The crowd roars. What a knock from Ambati Rayudu. He takes the helmet off, raises the bat and enjoys the moment with a big smile. 15.3
1
Shakib to Rayudu, 1 run, that's well bowled and equally well played by Rayudu. Shakib fired this way outside off stump on seeing Rayudu advance, the batsman had to really reach out to meet the ball and tapped it to extra-cover
15.2
1
Shakib to Dhoni, 1 run, I can't believe my eyes. Manish Pandey has dropped a sitter by his standards. It's MS Dhoni too! Pandey is one of HYD's finest fielders. Flighted delivery on the stumps, Dhoni steps out and mistimes the loft, hit flat to long-on, Pandey was close to the rope, took it too casually and it popped out
15.1
1
Shakib to Rayudu, 1 run, flatter and on the leg stump, Rayudu flicks it to long-on

Time-out time. Just 37 needed from 30 now. HYD need a couple of miracle overs. Sensible batting should see CHN home

Sandeep Sharma to Raina, out Caught by Williamson!! Now then, is there a change in the tale? HYD are masters at staging comebacks from nowhere. Don't write them off yet. Short of a length delivery it was from Sandeep Sharma, Raina wanted to play across the line, but he ended up slicing it towards mid-off, hit high on the bat, Kane ran to his left from extra-cover and put in the dive to complete the catch. Raina c Williamson b Sandeep Sharma 2(3)

Sandeep Sharma to Raina, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!

Sandeep Sharma [3.0-0-30-0] is back into the attack

Interestingly, Jadeja and Willey are padded up. 43 needed 36. This is CHN's game to lose.

Shakib to Rayudu, out Watson Run Out!! Shane Watson was moving slowly as he went for that run, wonder if he was carrying a niggle there. Rayudu pushed this flatter delivery towards extra-cover and set off, Watson was slow to take off, captain Kane threw it to the keeper, who did the rest. Finally a breakthrough for HYD, but Watson has done his job. Watson run out (Williamson/Goswami) 57(35) [4s-5 6s-3]

Shakib to Rayudu, THAT'S OUT!! Run Out!!

13.2
0
Shakib to Rayudu, no run, flatter, defended

Shakib Al Hasan [2.0-0-18-0] is back into the attack

MS Dhoni is not even padded up. That tells you the story!

12.6
4
Bhuvneshwar to Watson, FOUR, the runs are leaking. Short of a length on the leg stump, poor line with not much of protection behind square on the on-side, Watson pulls and sends it to the long leg boundary
12.5
1
Bhuvneshwar to Rayudu, 1 run, drilled to long-on
12.4
6
Bhuvneshwar to Rayudu, SIX, this is precisely why HYD need Rayudu ASAP! Just look at him run down at HYD's key bowler. Got beaten previous ball, but no respect whatsoever and he forces Bhuvi to shorten the length, with it swings across the line with a pull and powers it over the mid-wicket boundary. He's just toying with them
12.3
0
Bhuvneshwar to Rayudu, no run, ohh! That's gonna hurt. Interestingly this short of length delivery swung back in and beat Rayudu on the pull shot, hit on the thigh, hope it's not too bad
12.2
2
Bhuvneshwar to Rayudu, 2 runs, slower ball, swiped across the line and deep square leg is very open, another lovely slide from Rashid to stop the boundary
12.1
1
Bhuvneshwar to Watson, 1 run, short of length delivery on the off stump, Watson flicks it to mid-wicket

Bhuvneshwar Kumar [2.0-0-16-0] is back into the attack

HYD's key man in the middle overs, Rashid, has figures of 3-0-21-0. CHN have negated him very well. 66 from 48 is very doable. Can HYD pull off something dramatic? They badly need to get Rayudu because he's just not allowing the bowlers to settle into a line

11.6
0
Rashid Khan to Rayudu, no run, calmly defends off the back foot
11.5
1
Rashid Khan to Watson, 1 run, short enough for Watson to go back tuck to mid-wicket, they think about two, but the fielder attacked the ball quickly
11.4
1
Rashid Khan to Rayudu, 1 run, nudged to square leg
11.3
0
Rashid Khan to Rayudu, no run, a forward stride and then a confident defence to respect this flighted delivery
11.2
6
Rashid Khan to Rayudu, SIX, has he sliced this? Yes he has, but that bat in his hands is very good and it takes the ball all the way. The leggie outside off stump, Rayudu gets down on one knee and goes hard at it, looked like it was going to long-off for a moment, but this isn't Uppal. The boundaries are smaller
11.1
0
Rashid Khan to Rayudu, no run, flatter delivery outside off stump, Rayudu defends off the back foot

Rashid Khan [2.0-0-13-0] is back into the attack

10.6
1
S Kaul to Rayudu, 1 run, and another yorker, this time he gets it right, Rayudu flicks it to mid-wicket
10.5
4
S Kaul to Rayudu, FOUR, wow! Just wow! The yorker goes as a juicy full ball and Rayudu thrashes the drive wide of extra-cover. Interesting to see Kaul try three bouncers and then only try the yorker. What's the thought process there?

Second 100+ stand vs HYD for any wicket this season after 112 by Raina & Rayudu in Hyderabad.

10.4
0
S Kaul to Rayudu, no run, lovely yorker on the stumps, Rayudu digs it out
10.3
6
S Kaul to Rayudu, SIX, gee there's a lot of audaciousness with the way he bats. He knows Kaul way too well. Two short balls first up in the over, but expects Kaul to try another one, the bowler dished out exactly what the batsman wanted and that back and across movement from Rayudu makes a strong statement that he is bossing the show, out comes the pull shot and clears deep mid-wicket. Brilliant fifty
10.2
1
S Kaul to Watson, 1 run, Kaul's banging them into the surface and getting it up around neck height, this time Watson top-edges a pull shot that lands in front of the deep backward square leg fielder

1
S Kaul to Rayudu, 1 run, pulled in the air after getting inside the line, mistimed to an extent and lands safely at deep square leg

9.6
4
Sandeep Sharma to Watson, FOUR, just bowled a slower ball, tries to repeat, but this is well outside off stump and the batsman read this from the hand. No third man, so Watson camps back and cuts past backward point. A 31-ball fifty for Watto, another very handy innings at the top
9.5
0
Sandeep Sharma to Watson, no run, oh that ball deserved a wicket. Watson completely foxed by it and was through with the pull shot before the ball came, luckily for him the bounce was good enough to escape the sticks
9.4
2
Sandeep Sharma to Watson, 2 runs, low full toss, driven nicely past cover, Rashid does really well to run to his right and slide to save two runs. He's a pretty good fielder having worked a lot on his fitness in the last one year
9.3
1
Sandeep Sharma to Rayudu, 1 run, back and across movement and then a pause from Rayudu as he spots the slower ball and thumps it to long-off

Gayle & Rahul scored 53 & 55 in the two games against HYD. No other pair crossed 25 against them this T20 League before Watson & Rayudu today.

9.2
1
Sandeep Sharma to Watson, 1 run, short slower ball and he gets away with it as Watson pulls and finds deep backward square leg
9.1
2
Sandeep Sharma to Watson, 2 runs, in the air but wide of the man at cover. For a moment it looked as if Watson drove this full ball to hand, long-off cuts it off running to his left

Sandeep Sharma [2.0-0-20-0] is back into the attack

It's time for the strategic time-out. CHN going swimmingly in pursuit of 180. Rayudu and Watson both blazing away and HYD need to break this stand as early as possible or else, the game could slip away from them.

6.1
4
S Kaul to Rayudu, FOUR, short, no real purpose and Rayudu pulls it away to the mid-wicket boundary. Didn't time it alright, but placed it in the gap. The ball hurried onto him a bit and that foiled his timing
