commentary

The Kolkata had to respond after the thumping Mumbai gave them and they have done it in style. They are back in the top four with this win and with two games in hand have the momentum to reach the playoffs. That's it from here. Switch tabs to catch the young Delhi batsmen in action. Cya!

Sunil Narine, MoM - (When the bowlers bowl short) I just try to stay as still as possible and make contact. Get as close to the ball as I can, and go after it, because the ground was small to hit a six have to be still. It was a flat wicket. When the spinners were bowling, I just tried to back myself. Tried to keep it as simple as possible and hope for the best. If I bowl bad, it gives a chance to do well with the bat and vice versa. It helps as I can contribute somewhere in every game.

Dinesh Karthik: We batted really well. This is a small ground, mishits go for sixes and it is hard on the bowlers, especially the spinners. Our seamers are coming up, Prasidh is coming up really well, Searles has a lot of variety and Russell is really special. For the last five games he's been doing the job for us, keeps asking me for the ball and I have to calm him down (smiles). What I like the most about Narine is that he thinks of himself as a batsman now and no longer only as a pinch hitter. One more game against Rajasthan and putting up a good performance against them would be great.

Ashwin: 245 was a little too many. We didn't execute our plans really well. The bowlers were just caught under the fire. They were all over the place up front and in the middle overs as well and it cost us the game at the latter end. The yorkers weren't falling in the right place. When Dre Russ came in to bat it was quite evident that we needed to bowl wider and then change up with the yorkers. It wasn't going to plan, it wasn't our day to be honest. Mujeeb got injured very early and a couple of inside edges went at the start of the game. If we had batted a touch better it would have been a closer game than what it was. It is a small ground, but we don't want to give that as an excuse. I would say we have got ourselves into an interesting situation. We still have got enough games to try and get through to the play-offs. One positive is we have never lost a game that's been hands down. The middle-order has been a concern for us and that's why we brought in Finchy. He hit the ball well. He is a world-class player and I am sure he will come good.

The margin might not give the clear picture, but this game was won in the first half itself and when Rahul got out in the 9th over, it was sealed. With a fragile middle order and a mountain to climb, the onus was on Gayle and Rahul to provide the start and the duo did courtsey the latter, but two wickets in two balls from Russell put the brakes on the scoring rate. Narine, who was smashed around by Rahul, got the better of him and that pretty much won the game for KOL. Ashwin just delayed the inevitable with a 22-ball 45 and also ensured that their NRAJ didn't take a beating.

Prasidh to Ashwin, out Lbw!! Ouch! Ashwin is limping off the field. DK helped his state mate compose himself. He was struck on the right knee. Length delivery right on the stumps, Ashwin with a cleared front leg missed the slog to the on-side, hit flush on the back knee in front of middle. The umpire took a while before raising his finger, but he made the right decision. Ashwin grunted in pain after the blow and was on his haunches for a bit. Ashwin lbw b Prasidh 45(22) [4s-4 6s-3]

Prasidh to Ashwin, THAT'S OUT!! Lbw!!

Prasidh to Andrew Tye, out Caught by Karthik!! Excellent take! Sharp short delivery on middle and leg, Tye moved across, got inside the line and attempted the pull, the pace was just too quick for him, kissed the glove and flew to the left of DK, who flings full length to glove that. A Russell to Andrew Tye, leg byes, 1 run, Russell is down. Every time that happens the whole KOL team runs up to check on him. Full and angled in, Tye misses the flick and is struck on the pad. Ashwin was looking to steal a leg bye and was more than halfway down, Russell has a shy and misses and the duo eventually get the run. Russell went down after throwing the ball. He takes a while to get on his feet and is helped by DK. Looks fine to complete the over

Timeout! Just formalities remain in this game. Four wickets left and PUN need 90 more. The former looks more doable.

Searles to Finch, out Caught by Kuldeep Yadav!! And he's gone.. Finch is livid. Lets out a grunt before storming off. Searles went round the wicket and hurled it across the right-hander, Finch shuffled across and did well to get under the ball to play the scoop, couldn't find the elevation and Kuldeep takes a good catch at short fine. Either side and that would have been a boundary. FYI, maiden T20 League wicket for Searles. Finch c Kuldeep Yadav b Searles 34(20) [6s-3]
