commentary

That's all we have from today's encounter. CHN took the top spot after beating BLR, only to be replaced by Hyderabad after four hours. The bowlers after conceding 95 in 10 overs, bowled fantastically to restrict them to 163. But, they'll be very pleased with the way the batsmen responded - especially Pathan. Join us back for another double-header tomorrow. Until then, it's goodbye from Abhinand, Nikhil, Sriram, Pradeep, Akshay and Mukesh.

Rashid Khan, Man of the Match: Feels really good to perform well and play 100 games at such a young age. I had two bad matches, so had to keep everything simple, do the basics right and enjoy myself. That is the main strength - the quick arm action which makes it difficult for the batsmen. That's the only thing I'm taking advantage and working hard on it. The main thing is to bowl at good length - that is important for me. Feeling like playing in Afghanistan. The support and the love they've given me in the last two years, it's amazing. It gives the motivation. Feels good to perform. I don't think there's anybody who doesn't watch T20 League (in Afghanistan). I think their prayers help me, specially my parents.

Kane Williamson: I don't think there's any secret. As a team, we are trying to play our roles and adapt to the surfaces. We were on a different one again. Both teams used the new ball well. I thought the way we came back with the ball was really important. In terms of getting more runs, they looked like they would. It was nice to restrict them to a par score. They certainly put us under a lot of pressure. The bowlers responded well. We knew that the middle overs would be tough. Certainly the two openers did that. Those PP overs, were extremely important. He's (Hales) a world class international cricketer and it was great that he was able to give a good start. He (Pathan) hits the ball really well. Great example shown today. He performed well in tough conditions, against a good DEL side. We still have too many games left. From a team's perspective, we are looking for improvement. Today was a good team performance, not perfect.

Hales: It was good to be playing, had to wait for my chance. Had to make sure that I worked hard and be ready for the moment. Got a bit of luck, dropped by Maxi. Had to do well in the powerplay, it was a pretty decent wicket with the new ball. I have learnt a lot over the past few days, the amount of practice and the amount of stuff you have to do when you aren't playing, credit to the coaches behind the scenes. I do it both ways (his batting stance), sometimes, I move around to put the bowlers off their lengths, sometimes I do stand still and look to clear the infield, need to make the most when only two fielders are inside the ring.

Shreyas Iyer: Very disappointing to be honest. At certain point we were really in the game, on top but the momentum changed completely. It was a really good total to get on the board, even though we got a good start, we didn't capitalize later on, but 10 runs extra would have been nice. It was really hard surface and I knew it wasn't going to turn, I was banking on my seamer Avesh Khan but he didn't turn up that great. It was the perfect decision (to play only one spinner) on this wicket with the ball not turning that much, Mishra bowled really well and got two crucial wickets for us. It was a good chase from them. Catches win matches and we have been practicing really hard on our fielding, but when the nerves are really high, it happens and is part of the game; can't really complain. We didn't give up till the end. They had a good start and they have a good batting line-up, are on top of the table and they backed themselves to chase this down.

Previous highest chased down by HYD in Hyderabad: 162 v BLR, 2014

Highest targets chased down by HYD in T20 League:
186 v CHN, Ranchi, 2014
180 v PUN, Mohali, 2016
167 v BLR, Bengaluru, 2015
164 v DEL, Hyderabad, 2018 *

A cracking contest! It went down to the wire and HYD held their nerves in the end. The fantastic partnership - 32 off 16 deliveries - between KW and Yusuf Pathan took them past the finishing line. Williamson was calm at one end, and from the other end it was the powerful Pathan. It was the perfect combo for Hyderabad to register their seventh win and go to the top of the table. Hales was dropped on 9 by Maxwell off Avesh and the poor youngster had to bear the brunt of the Englishman who hit three sixes in one over. The openers got HYD off to a steady start - scoring 76 in eight overs, before Hales got bamboozled by Mishra. The leggie bowled beautifully and finished with figures - 2/19. Plunkett bowled a tight spell as well. But, Pathan was too good towards the end. And how good was that review in the penultimate over! Delhi are still in the tournament, mathematically! Hang around for the presentations..

1
Christian to Y Pathan, 1 run, finally, Christian gets his line and length right. But is it too late? Very full ball on the stumps, Pathan backs away and bunts it over the bowler's head. A single to long-on

4
Christian to Y Pathan, FOUR, just 2 needed now! Has to be HYD's game from here. Pacy bouncer and Pathan goes for the pull. Off the top-edge and goes over the man at short fine leg
19.2
6
Christian to Y Pathan, SIX, oh, Christian, what have you done. A full toss and gets the treatment it deserved. Was slightly outside off, Pathan crouches low, got underneath and bludgeoned it over long-on. Poses for the photographs as well. Stylish..

2
Christian to Y Pathan, 2 runs, bowls a length ball and Pathan smashes it straight back. Christian sticks his right hand out and half-stops. Can call it a drop as well. The bowler ran towards mid-wicket and scored a direct-hit at the bowler's end. Is KW in? The third umpire is called and he is safe. 12 off 5!

Daniel Christian [3.0-0-23-0] is back into the attack

One over to go. 14 needed! HYD scored 14 off the penultimate over. Who is going to bowl this over? Christian or Avesh Khan? It's the former. What are the chances of this match going to a Super Over?

Boult to Y Pathan, no run. Yusuf Pathan has been given OUT lbw. Pathan decideds to go upstairs. Fair delivery. No inside edge. Where did that pitch? That's the key. Oh my goodness! That's pitching outside leg, says HawkEye. I can't believe that. Probably 51 percent of the ball pitched outside leg. That's how close that is. Was a short of length delivery and Pathan misses the hack-across-the-line. Got hit on the back leg and that was adjacent to the stumps. This is a game of margins! Decimal

HYD review!

17.4
1
Plunkett to Y Pathan, 1 run, dropped! Vijay Shankar at deep backward square leg has put down. Probably lost it a bit and was late to go for the catch. Was a shortish ball on leg and Pathan heaved it flat behind square leg. How costly will that be?

Plunkett to Manish Pandey, out Caught by Prithvi Shaw!! The teenager takes a high-pressure catch. The cross-seamed fuller length ball, Pandey went too hard on his lofted shot and lost all his shape in the process. Wanted to go downtown and the bat face turned at the point of impact. Went miles up in the air and Shaw settled under it after running back from extra cover. Reverse-cupped. Manish Pandey c Prithvi Shaw b Plunkett 21(17) [4s-2]

Plunkett to Manish Pandey, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!

Time-out! 23 off the last two overs and the equation is now: 39 runs needed off 24 balls. With eight wickets in hand, HYD have to be the favourites. Can the visitors sneak back? Boult has two left, here's one..
