commentary

Right then. That's another tight finish of the season. After the previous game, Ashwin said he'd be greedy in telling he wanted 4 points from 2 away games before another home game and he's got two now. On the other hand, Gambhir is very disappointed and the team needs a dramatic turnaround to finish in the top four. Meanwhile, another team that is looking for a turnaround is Mumbai and they host the Hyderabad from Hyderabad at the Wankhede on Tuesday. That's going to be a cracking game. Interesting to see how HYD's superb bowling line up turns up on a true pitch. We'll catch you in a few hours time. Goodnight!

Ankit Rajpoot is the Man of the Match: "I am very happy because this is my second match for PUN. It's my responsibility towards the team. I thought if the captain gives me responsibility then I had to do well and pick wickets, because I wanted the side to win in a low-scoring game. My target was to bowl wicket-to-wicket. I wanted to work on the length ball and not try too much variation. I tried to get Shreyas out with the final two balls of my spell because we could have then bowled them out earlier." (Parts of it are translated from Hindi)

Ashwin (PUN captain): "We were discussing about what to be bowling in the 19th rather than whom to bowl because I had made up my mind to bowl Mujeeb for the final over. Because in the previous over, Sran tried the yorkers and got hit. So we were discussing about that, the length, slower balls and stuff like that. AJ (Tye) was my best bowler of the day, so bowled him early because if he got Shreyas Iyer, then that's the game and that's why I bowled him out early. I did believe that with the lower-order and the foreign batsmen coming in, Mujeeb would be tougher to hit. Coach literally says nothing (smiles). If we are a team that is serious about doing well in the championship and going any distance, this is the game we needed to get past. Once you defend a low score, then you can bank on anybody and everybody to go the distance. That was a clear message I gave to the boys and they responded well. They wanted to attack upfront in the first six and it actually fell into our hands because it wasn't such a wicket where you can come and take off and lay your hands on it. I am taking it one over at a time and if you are thinking too far, your hair will go grey very soon (smiles)."

Andrew Tye, Purple Cap holder - "The pitch was slow, we summed it up early. They bowled a lot of off-cutters and it was hard to score so we followed the same plan. We bowled according to the field as batsmen these days manipulate the field pretty well. Every game in this T20 League is close and today was another close match."

Gambhir, losing captain: "(Where DEL lost it) I thought in the first six overs when you lose three wickets, you let the opposition back in the game. We did score runs but also lost too many wickets. Our bowlers did really well to restrict them but we lost too many wickets in the first six and it's always difficult when that happens. (On the positives, especially Iyer) Yes, he was brilliant and also Avesh did really well. Shaw is someone who is also for the future. (Whether DEL can turn the season around) Still 8 more games to go and we can catch up. We got to win seven out of eight and need to play some really good cricket. Good part is that our bowling was really good today but our batsmen couldn't complete the job."

Talk about captaincy from Ashwin. He bowled out Ankit Rajpoot when he was bowling well and constantly rotated the bowlers. The steal for me was to trust Barinder for the penultimate over despite being expensive. The 19th only cost 4 runs and swung the game PUN's way. Overall, the bowlers used the slowness on the pitch to great effect by banging the ball in and asking batsmen to force pace. So then, it's four successive wins for Ashwin and Co. and they are sitting pretty at the top of the table with 10 points.

Lowest targets failed to chase down by DEL (T20 League):
134 v KOL, Kolkata, 2008
143 v MUM, Mumbai WS, 2017
144 v PUN, Delhi, 2018 *
146 v HYD, Delhi, 2010

The disappointment on Gambhir's face tells it all. This was a great chance for DEL to arrest their poor form and they have made a mess of it. Agonisingly lost by 4 runs. Ricky Ponting wears a sad look as well. The mood in the other camp is all elation. Rahul hugs Mujeeb for doing a fine job with the ball. Not easy for a spinner to bowl the final over when defending a total. 144 wasn't a big total, but three wickets inside the powerplay is not going to help in a chase. Shreyas Iyer anchored the chase and tried extremely hard but he didn't get enough support.

Mujeeb to Shreyas Iyer, out Caught by Finch!! In the air, hasn't hit this well and Finch runs around to his left from long-off to take the catch. What a squeeze this is from PUN. Shreyas Iyer is distraught and he looks towards the sky. The flatter delivery outside off stump, Shreyas slices the loft high in the air as the ball spun away from him. He wanted to go over long-off. Shreyas Iyer c Finch b Mujeeb 57(45) [4s-5 6s-1]

Mujeeb to Shreyas Iyer, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!

Mujeeb to Shreyas Iyer, FOUR, inside edgeeee and it's past the dive at short fine leg. Lucky boundary and it's down to 5 runs off the last ball. Shreyas races down the pitch and slogs, gets a thick edge
19.4
2
Mujeeb to Shreyas Iyer, 2 runs, not good contact again, shortish delivery on the stumps, Shreyas pulls to deep mid-wicket, in the gap, should have two and it's a fumble
19.3

Mujeeb to Shreyas Iyer, no run, mistimed to long-off and he denies the single
19.2
6
Mujeeb to Shreyas Iyer, SIX, smashed, short and outside off stump, Shreyas flat-bats the loft over long-off. Fifty up for Shreyas Iyer, good knock but he needs to connect them well from here on

Mujeeb to Shreyas Iyer, no run, precious dot ball. Flatter and down the leg-side, Shreyas tries to pull and misses, gets hit on the pad

Mujeeb Ur Rahman [3.0-0-13-1] is back into the attack

17 off 6. Mujeeb with the responsibility. PUN have the upper hand, but a couple of good hits in the first three balls could change things

Barinder to Mishra, no run, oh he's missed the ball completely. The best ball for a batsman to smash one in the stands in the entire over. Mishra jumped out and gave his all, but only connected with thin air

This ball has to go to the fence. Great over thus far, Ashwin has a long discussion with his bowler. Round the wicket now

1
Barinder to Shreyas Iyer, 1 run, swings hard but doesn't connect well, slower ball outside off stump, Shreyas is unable to find the middle of the bat again

18 off 8

18.4
1
Barinder to Mishra, 1 run, Mishra moves across and tries to ramp it past short fine leg, but only hits it to the keeper. Could so easily have been bowled as well

Third man back, fine leg in

1
Barinder to Shreyas Iyer, 1 run, slower ball, swung away in the air and falls short of Finch at long-on. Good thinking from Barinder to bang the slower ones into the pitch and force the batsman to manufacture pace

Amit Mishra, right handed bat, comes to the crease

Batsmen have crossed over, so Shreyas will be back on strike

Barinder to Plunkett, out Caught by Nair!! And what does he do first ball? Advances and connects well, but finds the fielder at deep backward square leg. It was a short slower ball, Plunkett wanted to flick that in the gap wide of deep mid-wicket, but hit it too square and too well. Plunkett c Nair b Barinder 0(1)

Barinder to Plunkett, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!

Watchout for those slower ball, Plunkett!

1
Barinder to Shreyas Iyer, 1 run, slower ball on the short of length zone, Shreyas pulls and gets an under edge that rolls to mid-wicket

Liam Plunkett, right handed bat, comes to the crease

Andrew Tye finishes 4-0-25-2. 21 needed off 12 balls. Oh ho! It's Barinder again. Was expensive last over. Mujeeb has one over. Shouldn't he be bowling the penultimate over?

Andrew Tye to Rahul Tewatia, out Caught by Rahul!! Got to be a slower into the pitch and it's done the trick. Maybe Andrew Tye won't mind about bowling the extra ball now with the wide call earlier. This was cleverly angled across the left-hander on a good length, Tewatia goes for a big slog and gets an edge that goes slowly to Rahul. Rahul Tewatia c Rahul b Andrew Tye 24(21) [4s-1 6s-1]

Andrew Tye to Rahul Tewatia, THAT'S OUT!! Caught!!

1
Andrew Tye to Shreyas Iyer, 1 run, low full toss, Shreyas drills it to cover
17.4
2
Andrew Tye to Shreyas Iyer, 2 runs, talk about pendulum swing, this is exactly it. Shreyas guides this full ball straight to Yuvraj at backward point and sets off, Yuvi has a shy at the bowler's end and there's no one backing up, the man at deep mid-wicket now has a shy again and the ball goes to Yuvi again
17.3
1
Andrew Tye to Rahul Tewatia, 1 run, fuller length delivery on the leg stump, Tewatia flicks it to deep mid-wicket
17.3
1
Andrew Tye to Rahul Tewatia, wide, Andrew Tye is not happy with this call from the umpire, has a chat with him, but that's just missed the mark with the line outside off stump and it's a fair call
17.2
1
Andrew Tye to Shreyas Iyer, 1 run, in the airrrrr and just short of the incoming Finch. Full delivery on the stumps, Shreyas swings for a loft over the long-off fence, mistimes it, lucky that he didn't hit this well enough to carry to hand
17.1
1
Andrew Tye to Rahul Tewatia, 1 run, short ball, sliced in the air, doesn't carry to third man, Mujeeb keeps it down to a run

It's down to 28 off 18

16.6
1
Barinder to Rahul Tewatia, 1 run, very full, Tewatia tries to back away and swing, gets an inside edge that rolls to point
16.5
2
Barinder to Rahul Tewatia, 2 runs, slaps hard, hit pretty well, wide of long-off, oh no, Barinder fumbles the throw and Shreyas was well short of the crease. The bowler didn't realise he had to come close to the sticks, rushed very late and wasn't in a great position to collect the throw

Third man, fine leg in

16.4
4
Barinder to Rahul Tewatia, FOUR, what a timely hit! He's moved across the stumps, got down on his knees and paddled the fast bowler around the corner through backward square leg. Brave hit! Barinder missed the yorker again and offered a full ball on the stumps
16.3
1
Barinder to Shreyas Iyer, 1 run, slower delivery just outside off stump, Shreyas goes back and flicks wide of long-on
16.2
1
Barinder to Rahul Tewatia, 1 run, full toss and Tewatia is kind enough to mistime the slog to deep mid-wicket
