commentary

Kohli will get a lot of flack for bowling out his key bowlers very early and the team selection of course, but come on, whatever your name is, you got to back yourself to defend 45 off 18 balls. Kohli wants his bowlers to learn, hopefully they do quickly. He was gutted in the interview post-match, but took it with a smile. By the way, Dhoni gave away some gems as to what the ideal role of a finisher is. Scroll down for a good read. On that note, we bid goodbye and enjoyed bringing this riveting contest to you. We'll back in a matter of hours with HYD v PUN of course. Goodnight!

Phew! Why does this CHN team like to test our hearts everytime they go out to play? Five of their six games were decided in the final over. You definitely got to feel for BLR. 205 on the board, CHN literally down and out. Just a matter of getting Rayudu/Dhoni with about 100 runs needed in 7 overs, but Dhoni was just sooooo cool in the Garden city that was cooled by the rain in the evening. And hey, rain gods, thanks a lot for just watching the cricket from up above. You were kind!

Dhoni (2/2): "Shardul will get better. The more he is under the pump, the better he will get as the tournament progresses. It's important to know the overs that are left and who will bowl the death overs, who is their best bowler on that particular wicket and who you can take on. You may win or lose, but it's about getting the process right. Not everybody knows what kind of a game is theirs and what really is their strength. You will score runs with the experience you have got, but if you can help the other batsman with what to play, run quicker between the wickets, tell what the bowler could do with his batting style etc. All these things really matter, and that's what I feel is the job of the finisher. It's not just about me batting at the death. Sharing the experience with the youngsters or whoever is batting and helping them getting the score is key, because tomorrow I may not be batting with him or I may get out, he needs to do the job. Rayudu's batting is very important for us, he keeps the scoreboard moving."

MS "Cool" Dhoni is the Man of the Match: (1/2) "I thought when we had the innings break this was difficult to chase because when I was keeping, I felt AB batted well to get them to 200 runs and it was tough to score. I thought it was 15-20 beyond par score. The key for us was the two left-handers but we lost them early. Just had to hang around there. This is a small ground, ball travels and there was just a bit of dew and it worked in our favour. Rayudu batted really well. Got a very good partnership and then Bravo striking at the end, overall it went perfectly according to the script. Not exactly as we had planned, but still the script was good. This was a slightly slowish wicket and that's why AB's knock was special. It wasn't an easy wicket, it was not a wicket where you could bat like that, credit to him. Happy that people are chipping in for us and we are chasing down big totals and at the same time it is a good exposure for some of our death bowlers."

Kohli (2/2): "Pitch has played really well, we are happy with that. Spin came as a massive factor, both for us and for them. But quality batting from both sides getting 200-plus. Great game for people to see but as a team, we are disappointed to not get across the line. (On Rayudu being another of the young batting talents) He is not young, has been around 15 years, been around forever (smiles). Quality player and we all know that. Has done well in the T20 League and domestic, also has done well for India too. You never know who gets the opportunities. Deserves the applause. I am happy for him. (On MSD) Great to see him strike a few, not against us though. We wouldn't have liked that. He's hitting the ball really well this T20 League. He is in a happy space, batting higher up and expressing himself. Seems to be enjoying it. Credit to him as well."

Virat Kohli (1/2): "(On the loss) Many things that we can look at. The way we bowled is just not acceptable. Just not good enough on the day, 72/4 and giving away runs like that for just 1 wicket is criminal. Something that we need to address going forward because we haven't bowled well. If we cannot defend even 200, it's a problem somewhere. It hurts at the moment, very tough for us to swallow but great game for Chennai. (Whether BLR has better bench strength) You have to back the guys who are on the park and need to give them confidence to execute what they have to. They need to be clear in their plans and execute well. We weren't brave enough with the ball, somewhere there was that hesitation of the opposition overcoming them."

Rayudu - Orange Cap holder: "Unbelievable. Lost a few wickets early. We were constructing the innings. We had the belief, but this ground made it really possible. I am hitting the ball well, so the batting position doesn't really matter to me. We were calculating how many overs each guy had and we wanted to play out Chahal because he was looking the most threatening there. Really happy that we won."

Post-winning scenes: Dhoni with his coolness and swagger was lifted by Harbhajan - must be said for the offie, that is a routine thing as far as T20 League is concerned. Watson, Billings, Wood, Faf and Willey were up and shouting their lungs off as the ball left MS's bat. They were all sitting in a group.

After tonight's loss one has to wonder whether it is a mental thing with BLR losing to CHN. So many close games and every single time, they have come out on the losing end. It can't be skill or any other factor. Similar to South Africa in events. There's something that the human brain can't comprehend! We'll leave it there and let you decide!

It was not all about Dhoni though. Rayudu played his part with a massive innings and he fed off MS's self-belief not to play the rash shot and gift his wicket away when his side were in trouble after losing four wickets. The asking rate was touching 14, 15, 16 at various points, but nothing flustered the duo. Maybe Kohli made a mistake by bowling out Umesh and Chahal but you can turn that around and say what if he was trying to get MS and Rayudu out. That would've sealed the game right there. Kohli was outstanding as captain but he met a bigger match in MS and that's where the game was won and lost.

23:52 Local Time, 18:22 GMT, 23:52 IST: MS Dhoni is the GOAT! As a finisher! GOAT in terms of being cool. In all sport! Just the swagger after he saw the ball go over wide long-on. A mischievous I know it I can win from anywhere smirk dotted his face. Unbelievable. Really. And he keeps doing it all the time. Never doubt the man. The way he took it to the end knowing his ability to finish it off against the likes of Siraj, Negi and Anderson at the end speaks volumes about the man's innate self-belief. Never doubted himself - not one second - when he was nudging, nurdling, dabbing, pushing and eking out singles, seeing out Umesh and Chahal in the middle overs is stuff of legend.

Corey Anderson to Dhoni, SIX, that's it! How cool is he man! Is he human? CHN have won with two balls to spare! Unbelievable stuff. More than 100 runs were needed in about 7 overs but he never showed any signs of pressure, nor did he play rash shots. Just played his trumpcard of taking the match deep and backing himself to finish and boy, what a finish it was. Just a jump across to the off-side and slogs this full ball with all his might to clear deep mid-wicket. This is BLR's first loss defending in excess of 200 at the Chinnaswamy
19.3
1
Corey Anderson to Dwayne Bravo, 1 run, cut in the airrr, but there is a man at deep point. Short of a length ball from Corey Anderson, Bravo doesn't get the placement right

6 needed off 4

Corey Anderson to Dwayne Bravo, SIX, who better than DJ Bravo to hit those inside-out shots over cover. You got to admire him. Distraught BLR fans. Delight in the CHN camp. Back of a length delivery outside off stump, Bravo backs away and gets under the ball to smash it over cover
19.1
4
Corey Anderson to Dwayne Bravo, FOUR, that's the healthiest of edges you can get. Lucky runs. Precious runs for CHN. The yellow contingent believes. Ceee Esss Kayyy chants ringing in the ground. Shortish delivery outside off stump, Bravo slogs and gets a thick edge that flies over the leaping QdK

16 needed. Backward point, third man, fine leg, square leg in

18.6
2
Siraj to Dhoni, 2 runs, straight drive, hits the stumps at the bowler's end and deflects. Didn't go really hard at this very full ball, maybe just wanted to take a single to keep strike, Siraj didn't get a foot on it, otherwise Bravo would have been out

It's Chahal's turn to talk to Siraj. Come on!

18.6
1
Siraj to Dhoni, wide, aaaand it's another one way outside off stump

Now Siraj is approached by Kohli. Feel for Siraj. One ball left to Dhoni and he has many on his ears. I feel he's just got to be left alone.

18.6
1
Siraj to Dhoni, wide, oh no, Siraj! What are you doing! He tries the widish yorker but bowls way outside off stump

AB has a chat with Siraj

18.6
1
Siraj to Dhoni, wide, left alone and the umpire stretches his arms. The slower ball bumper loops over Dhoni, oh that was well above the head

21 needed of 7. This needs to go for a boundary for CHN! Third man, backward point, fine leg in. Is it going to be full and outside off stump

18.5
6
Siraj to Dhoni, SIX, don't tell me he deliberately sliced that all the way for six! Oh he did! Genius! Low full toss outside off stump, not a really bad ball, Dhoni has been looking to target third man this innings and he's somehow got under this properly and sent it for a maximum
18.4
1
Siraj to Dwayne Bravo, 1 run, it's not happening for Bravo tonight. High full toss, he jumped out and got too close to the line of the ball, mistimed hit wide of cover
18.3
1
Siraj to Dhoni, 1 run, lovely wide yorker, Dhoni reaches out and squeezes it to backward point. Lovely stuff from Siraj. Held the ball in way to suggest he was going to bowl the slower ball and then changed the grip last moment to go full pace
18.2
1
Siraj to Dwayne Bravo, 1 run, full ball, Bravo can only drill it to long-off. This is just what BLR want. 29 off 10 now. Massive pressure on Dhoni
18.1
0
Siraj to Dwayne Bravo, no run, and he's missed a low full toss, Dhoni is key and he's off strike, gold dust dot ball. Tried to target the cover boundary, only connected with thin air

30 needed off 12 balls.

Highest scores for Rayudu in T20 League:
82 v BLR, Bengaluru, 2018
81*v BLR, Bengaluru, 2012
79 v HYD, Hyderabad, 2018
68 v HYD, Hyderabad, 2014
65 v PUN, Mohali, 2016

17.6
1
Corey Anderson to Dwayne Bravo, 1 run, slower delivery outside off stump, Bravo drives it to sweeper cover, it's not going to be easy for Bravo to time those straightaway. This is not a batting belter

Dwayne Bravo, right handed bat, comes to the crease

17.5
1
Corey Anderson to Rayudu, out Rayudu Run Out!! 1 run completed. They say you don't run on a misfield and Rayudu's excellent knock has been ended by a brilliant piece of fielding by Umesh. Brilliant first with the full length dive to get a hand on the attempted square-drive to save the boundary, and then brilliant with recovery time and more importantly smash the stumps with a bullet throw and he had one stump to aim at from a side on angle. BLR are back in it! Rayudu doesn't want to leave. He got greedy and hoped for a poor throw from the fielder but Umesh has a good throwing arm and was out by miles despite a dive. Rayudu run out (U Yadav) 82(53) [4s-3 6s-8]

Corey Anderson to Rayudu, THAT'S OUT!! Run Out!!

17.4
4
Corey Anderson to Rayudu, FOUR, now then, now then, you can't bowl way too short and slow either. No sweeper cover remember, only third man and deep cover, so Rayudu stands tall, delays the cut and hits it over the infield
17.3
1
Corey Anderson to Dhoni, 1 run, slower ball into the pitch, tough to hit those, Kohli wants more of those, Dhoni mistimes the cut to point and almost bangs the bat on the ground in disappointment that he didn't hit that in the gap
17.2
6
Corey Anderson to Dhoni, SIX, whyyy! When those back of a length balls were working so well, why do you want to try the yorker. Dhoni smacks it. He did really smack it straight down the ground. Fifty for the CHN captain, he's determined and as always confident
17.2
1
Corey Anderson to Dhoni, wide, that's way outside off stump. The only thing with this tactic from BLR is that it's going to be predictable. It's going to be back of a length and everything angled across, they just got to hope for a few mishits to land in hand, and for them to be caught
17.1
1
Corey Anderson to Rayudu, 1 run, now that's brilliant field placing. They know it's a slightly sluggish pitch, so they have placed a deep cover and left sweeper cover open. Rayudu slices it on the bounce to the man in the deep

What's it then now? 45 needed off 18. Is it asking for too much? BLR should back themselves to save this, but you never know.
