4

Sharma to Dwayne Smith, FOUR, that's a thick inside edge is what it is. Smith just plants his foot down looking to loft it down the ground without being anywhere close to the pitch. It slides in, spoons up off the edge and beats square leg before running away

6

Sharma to Dwayne Smith, SIX, he's got proper hold of that. Good lord. That's gone way back. Not much different than the first delivery as Smith lunges at a length ball but this time he muscles it right off the middle. Welcome back as an opener

4

Sharma to Dwayne Smith, FOUR, now fires it short and Smith goes back to punch it through the covers. What a blistering start for GUJ! 16 off the over

6

Ferguson to Brendon McCullum, SIX, bangs it in short but it's a leg-cutter and it just sits up. McCullum makes room and spanks a flat-batted shot over extra-cover. Woof!

4

Ferguson to Dwayne Smith, FOUR, bludgeoned! A short of length delivery outside off which Smith smokes through mid-wicket. To hit that well in front of square against someone like Ferguson, especially after having to fetch it from wide of off, it's a special shot

4

Thakur to Brendon McCullum, FOUR, you don't bowl short to this guy, not unless you're express. Such fast hands as he dispatches a pull through mid-wicket. The man in the deep is too square

D

Thakur to Brendon McCullum, no run, hit straight back at Thakur who puts it down. Half a chance here. McCullum had timed that beautifully and the ball was travelling. But it came at a nice height in the followthrough. Thakur parries it towards mid-off

4

Ferguson to Dwayne Smith, FOUR, 147kph on that length ball and Smith uses all of it to slice the ball over backward point. Or maybe I'm giving him too much credit and it's just a thick outside edge. In either case, he went hard and the ball flew

4

Ferguson to Dwayne Smith, FOUR, a proper half-volley at the stumps, beautifully whipped away wide of mid-on. Excellent wrists from Smith. GUJ off to a flier

4

to Brendon McCullum, FOUR, lunges out at the ball and lofts it over mid-off. Interesting that he's gone after first ball. The ball was full enough to execute the shot and he took his opportunity

4

to Brendon McCullum, FOUR, now McCullum skips out of the crease, takes it on the full and drills it through extra-cover. Back to back boundaries

6

to Brendon McCullum, SIX, a little shimmy down the track, reaches out to the pitch of the ball and wallops it over long-on. under pressure, probably for the first time in this T20 League

4

Chahar to Dwayne Smith, FOUR, too close to cut, but Smith has played it well! Picked the length early, rocked back and slapped it from around off-stump backwards of point

4

Chahar to Dwayne Smith, FOUR, that's pleading to be pummeled. Short and slides down, Smith with a brazen-looking pull shot puts it away into the vacant mid-wicket area

4

to Brendon McCullum, FOUR, kneels down and sweeps between long-on and deep mid-wicket. Gee! This is some exhibition

4

to Brendon McCullum, FOUR, a repeat of the previous delivery. This time though he had to fetch it from well outside off and beats Stokes's dive to his right at long-on

6

to Brendon McCullum, SIX, skips out of his crease and smokes a dart high into the night sky, straight back over the bowler's head

4

to Dwayne Smith, FOUR, full floater on middle and leg, Smith drills it to the right of a diving Imran . Long-on can't get there

W

Thakur to Dwayne Smith, out Caught by Rahul Chahar!! Flays one straight down the throat of third man. Dwayne Smith is disappointed, but he has done his job. Was lured by the width on offer and went chasing, makes a mess of the connection though, it slices the thick outside edge and drops as a dolly into the hands of junior Chahar. Dwayne Smith c Rahul Chahar b Thakur 47(30) [4s-8 6s-1]

W

Chahar to Brendon McCullum, out Stumped!! The junior Chahar continues to impress. Some of the fantasy fanatics are cursing_____ you know who! Baz follows his instincts, shimmies down and looks to bash the young man over long-on. Was nowhere near the pitch of the delivery, beaten by length and done in the drift and dip. MS slaps the bails in flash. Brendon McCullum st Dhoni b Chahar 49(32) [4s-5 6s-3]

W

to Karthik, out Bowled!! strikes and the customary celebrations follow! DK had a great domestic season, looked decent thus far in this T20 League, but not today. He was shaping up to cut, perhaps didn't expect Imran to fire in a googly. Result? He ends up chopping it back onto his stumps, off the inside edge obviously. Karthik b 3(5)

4

Chahar to Finch, FOUR, paddle-scoops a leg-drifter to the fine leg fence, good placement

6

Chahar to Raina, SIX, this is Raina at his best. He does this so often against spinners. Dances down, gets to the pitch of the delivery and takes Chahar for a journey over cow corner

4

to Raina, FOUR, first poor delivery from . Half-volley outside off, Raina lofts him inside-out over extra cover. Smith running in from long-off gave up a little too early

4

to Raina, FOUR, that's timed to perfection! Save your legs. It rose just enough from a fullish length, Raina shows the full face of the bat as he spanks it through cover. No chance for the man in the deep

4

to Finch, FOUR, plenty of flight on that one and Finch takes full toll of it. Watches it closely and nails the drive wide of extra cover

4

to Raina, FOUR, Raina is having a ball out there. Middling almost everything. On one knee, gets underneath a flighted delivery and loft-drives over extra cover

4

to Raina, FOUR, on the pads, Raina says thank you and brooms him away into the deep backward square fence. 13 off the over

4

Ferguson to Finch, FOUR, a night to forget for Imran Tahir as he puts one down. Pick-up flick shot from Finch, Tahir at fine leg was late to anticipate as he tries to reach the ball with a lackadaisical dive, through his fingers

6

Ferguson to Finch, SIX, that's a Finch special. He loves pace, doesn't he? Stamps a 145ks delivery with a 80-metre maximum over square leg. Pure power!

6

Ferguson to Finch, SIX, that's it. Gujarat win their first game of the season. Finch goes deep inside the crease, expects pace and envelops it over long-on

W

Kumar to Rahane, out Caught by Raina!! What a way to start your 150th T20 League game. First, won the toss and now ulls off a blinder. Even he can't believe that he has lucked that out. A blob for Rahane and early trouble for une. This one jagged back in from a shortish length, Rahane thought it would be shaing away and went for a flashy cut, the outside edge flies towards the cordon. Raina, standing at wide sli, reacts quickly and grabs it with his left hand. He caught it when the ball had almost assed him. Rahane c Raina b Kumar 0(3)

4

Kumar to Smith, FOUR, class written all over it. Tells us what kind of form Smith is in. Ball is darting around and he just resents the full face of the bat and drives it straight ast the bowler, the timing and lacement was exquisite from the skier

4

Thampi to Tripathi, FOUR, Tripathi is off the mark with a fine shot. Thampi wanted to start with a yorker, misses it by a good distance, the full toss is thumped down the ground, past the diving mid-on fielder

4

Thampi to Smith, FOUR, wow! Does this man have wrists? Even the sub-continent players will be proud of this shot. Full delivery around off, Smith with his slight shuffle brings those wrists into play as he flicks it over mid-wicket. Couple of bounces and into the fence

4

Kumar to Triathi, FOUR, lovely shot! Nothing too fancy from Triathi. Waited for the ball to do its bit - move away and used the width on offer to his advantage, carved it ast the diving cover-oint fielder and it raced across the turf

4

Jakati to Smith, FOUR, greets Jakati with a whippy flick. Flatter and just outside off, Smith brings his bat down at an angle and whips it past mid-on. No chance for the deep mid-wicket fielder

6

Jakati to Smith, SIX, glorious. Uses his feet and gets right to the pitch of the flighted delivery, once he did that the rest was easy, lofts it handsomely over the long-on fence for the first six of the game

6

Kumar to Triathi, SIX, well, Triathi showing why he's been sent out to oen. One, two and bang. Advances to the length delivery and swings through the line. Hit flat and over dee mid-wicket

6

Kumar to Triathi, SIX, the result though does not change. Good length ball around off, Triathi lofts through the line, nice free flowing of the bat and off it went over the long-off fence. Back-to-back sixes for Triathi

4

Kumar to Triathi, FOUR, the 50-run artnershi is u. Rahane's wicket seems a long time ago. itched u and right in the slot, Triathi has no half measures in his armoury, lofts it over the infield on the off-side and collects four more

4

Kumar to Smith, FOUR.. and it is usual business from Smith at the other end. Sees the delivery in his arc and lofts it straight back over the bowler's head. Once again the full face of the bat was the key to the shot

4

Kumar to Smith, FOUR, oor bowling this from K. Searches for the yorker, low full toss down leg, Smith just hels it along the way, flicked behind square and there's no one in the dee to sto that. Exensive over from K, 25 off it and UNE are off to a flier

W

Tye to Tripathi, out Caught by Finch!! A breezy innings comes to an end. One shot too many from Tripathi. Should have tried to bat a bit longer, especially with Smith at the other end. Full delivery on off, Tripathi makes a bit of room and lofts it to mid-off. The idea was to go over the fielder, but with the ball being too close to his bat, he did not get the elevation. Finch reverse cups it right on the edge of the circle. Tripathi c Finch b Tye 33(17) [4s-3 6s-2]

4

to Smith, FOUR, errs in line and Smith is too good a player to miss out. Drifts onto the pads, Smith stays on leg-stump and glances it fine. PK at short fine dives just to please the captain, the ball had gone past him

6

to Stokes, SIX, just a pick up shot and cleared the rope by quite some distance. Bit of air on this delivery, Stokes uses his long reach to get under that and sends it sailing over deep mid-wicket. Jaddu under the pump

W

Smith to Smith, out Caught by Finch!! Break followed by a wicket. The bowling change has worked for GUJ. This is a huge wicket. Smith was looking in ominous touch. Short of length delivery just outside off, Smith went for the pull and top edged it towards long-off. Finch had plenty of time to settle under that and he pouches it safely. Just what GUJ needed after the time-out and not what PUNE required. Steven Smith was gutted with himself, smacks the bat onto his glove as he walks back. Smith c Finch b Smith 43(28) [4s-6 6s-1]

4

to Stokes, FOUR, edged and four. Stokes won't mind that. Quicker and the ball straightens a touch, Stokes goes hard on the drive and the outside edge runs away fine. A welcome boundary for PUNE

4

Smith to Stokes, FOUR, hit-me delivery from Smith. Short and down leg, Stokes swivels and helps it over the short fine leg fielder. He's keeping the scoreboard moving swiftly

W

Tye to Stokes, out Bowled!! The aeroplane takes off. Second wicket for Tye and what a selection he's been for GUJ. Another biggie for the home side. A set Ben Stokes departs. It was the knuckle ball from Tye, Stokes did not pick it and was early into his drive, the ball catches the inside edge and deflects off the pads onto the stumps. PUNE in a spot of bother now. Stokes b Tye 25(18) [4s-2 6s-1]

4

Jakati to Manoj Tiwary, FOUR, that's a half-tracker wide of off. Tiwary fetches it and shovels it wide of long-on. Jakati under pressure straightaway after an ordinary first over

W

to Dhoni, out Lbw!! Dhoni's poor run of form continues. He's hit on the back leg as slides one on with the arm and the ball would have clipped leg-stump at least. Dhoni wanted to cut loose here and unwinds a hefty swing looking to go downtown but was beaten on the inside edge by the slider. A good phase for Gujarat this. Dhoni lbw b 5(8)

4

to Ankit Sharma, FOUR, nicely done. He's played this so late and so delicately, using all the pace that has to offer. Darted in on a back of a length just outside off, Ankit leans back and dabs it fine of short third man

4

Thampi to Manoj Tiwary, FOUR, brilliant timing. The ball races away past point. Back of a length outside off, Tiwary eases onto the back foot and punches it firmly. Good start to the over

OT

Thampi to Ankit Sharma, 2 runs, back of a length slower ball on middle and leg, Ankit makes room and chops it into the pitch. He's ambling across for a single as Thampi appeared to be lazy in getting to the ball, but that's only a smokescreen. Thampi quickly pounces, turns and throws and would have caught Ankit short had he hit the stumps direct. Instead, concedes an extra run

D

to Manoj Tiwary, 1 run, hammered back at the bowler and that's not really a chance. Props to for getting his hands in position quick enough and attempt a catch but he can't hold on. It was hit powerfully. Saved a boundary really

4

to Ankit Sharma, FOUR, this time can do nothing about it. Full in the slot, Ankit drills it straight down the ground and beats long-on to the right

6

to Manoj Tiwary, SIX, goes down on one knee and tonks the ball straight back down the ground. Finishes a good over for GUJ. 14 off it. fires it full again, maybe aiming for the blockhole, but misses it by a fair distance and Tiwary is all over him

6

Kumar to Ankit Sharma, SIX, length and into the batsman, right in Ankit's arc to heave it over cow corner. It might have been a slower ball but Ankit icked it all right

W

Tye to Ankit Sharma, out Caught by Brendon McCullum!! That's been skied up .. and McCullum takes a really good catch around 5 yards inside the ropes. It was there to be slogged from a length, but Ankit went through it too early and lobbed a leading edge up which surprisingly travelled quite a fair bit. McCullum skirts to his right from long-on, runs backwards and grabs it with both hands while tumbling over. Ankit Sharma c Brendon McCullum b Tye 25(15) [4s-2 6s-1]

W

Tye to Manoj Tiwary, out Caught by Ishan Kishan!! Two in two. Tye has four. Slower ball at the stumps, Tiwary swings it in the air and is caught at the backward square leg boundary. Lovely deception from Tye. Manoj Tiwary c Ishan Kishan b Tye 31(27) [4s-2 6s-1]

W

Tye to SN Thakur, out Bowled!! Two hat-tricks in a day. The T20 League has gone mental. Thakur has absolutely no clue as Tye dips a knuckle ball into the blockhole and he ends up playing all around it. The ball sneaks through to knock leg-stump. Tye is absolutely pumped. It's a five-for as well! SN Thakur b Tye 0(1)

D

Tye to Rahul Chahar, 2 runs, that could have, and should have, been four in the over for Tye. Another knuckle ball, Chahar is early into the slog and miscues it to Jadeja of all people at deep mid-wicket. He puts down a simple enough chance
