4

to Markram, FOUR, positive start for South Africa. The inswinger from but it's a trifle full and starts from middle stump line. Markram clips it sweetly through square leg, timed it beautifully

W

to Markram, out Caught by Parthiv Patel!! A lifter from ! Brilliantly taken by Patel as well because he had to time the leap well, which he did and India have drawn first blood. It was a short of a length delivery outside off stump and reared off the surface, the line actually meant that Markram could have left it alone perhaps. But he chose to fiddle with it and by the time he realized the zip off the surface, it was too late. Just what the Proteas didn't want. Markram c Parthiv Patel b 4(7) [4s-1]

4

to Elgar, FOUR, whoa, that's a super shot! Fractionally short and Elgar rode it well with a half-pull. Wristy stuff to send it to the deep mid-wicket fence

4

to Amla, FOUR, poor delivery. Short and wide outside off, Amla doesn't miss out. Rocks back and cuts wide of backward point, raced away. Amla starts with a boundary today

4

to Amla, FOUR, poor bowling from . Can't bowl short and wide outside off to Amla. It sits up to be hit and Amla rocks back to smash the cut through cover, again off the middle of the bat and second boundary of the over

4

to Elgar, byes, FOUR, four bonus runs for SA. Good length outside off, left alone and it bounces awkwardly in front of Parthiv Patel, who can't stop it cleanly. Didn't get his body behind it and it runs away. All bonus runs these

4

to Elgar, FOUR, when there's width like that, Elgar will try to find the boundary as many times as he can, full and wide outside off, he doesn't move completely forward, just moves across and essays the square drive, races away

4

to Elgar, FOUR, edged and over gully! The thing that Elgar did well was go hard on the drive. Was full and wide of off, since he went full-throttle, it cleared gully. Disappointment for the Indians

4

to Amla, FOUR, how far was that from the backward square leg fielder? Need a replay to know more. But this pull was in the air as Amla tried to keep it down, rolled his wrists as he swivelled to pull. Shouts of "catch" but it went away to the fence, is a very disappointed man

4

to Amla, FOUR, that's the problem with angling the ball back in, Amla shuffles across and takes it from his hips, glanced away to the fine leg fence. The fielder is too square and it races away

4

to Elgar, FOUR, poor line and punished! strays down leg with a shorter length, Elgar gets across on the back foot and just tickles it fine. Down the leg side to the fence

4

to Amla, FOUR, lovely shot! overcooks one and drifts onto the pads, Amla shuffles a touch and times the flick well through mid-wicket. Picked the gap to perfection. This should ease the pressure that was building

4

to Elgar, FOUR, what a shot! This has come out of nowhere. Signs of aggression from Elgar, picks this fuller ball from around off and drags it through mid-wicket with a powerful whip. Total control and it's been dispatched

4

Pandya to Elgar, FOUR, that's been mauled! The short ball from Pandya but it hardly rises. Sits up nicely for Elgar to crack the pull through mid-wicket. Absolutely smashed it! What a way to bring up the 100-run stand!

4

Pandya to Elgar, FOUR, he wanted to leave that, but the ball takes the face of the bat and runs away in the gap between slip and gully. What a knock though, hit on the helmet, play stopped, lots of drama, hit a number times on the glove even in the morning but he's managed to find a way to survive. A vital fifty, probably a match-defining innings from Dean Elgar

OT

to Amla, 2 runs, a back foot punch and it's the 38th Test fifty for Hash Amla. Top knock, he's got two fifties on a tough pitch. Patience and determination are the two key words to describe his knock. Never allowed the bowler to settle with his shuffle across the sticks

W

to Amla, out Caught by Hardik Pandya!! In the airrr and taken. Massive wicket and opening for India. Look at the response from the crowd and the dressing room. A standing ovation. This is as good as a double-hundred, considering he also played a vital hand in the first effort. Clever field placing from Kohli/ and Amla falls into the trap. With that shuffle across the stumps, Amla favours the leg-side, so Kohli has packed the leg-side field to an extent. Short mid-wicket in and Amla flicks uppishly, Pandya was quick to move to his right and grab it with both hands to delight India. Top catch that. Now then, can India work on this opening? Amla c Hardik Pandya b 52(140) [4s-5]

4

to de Villiers, FOUR, that's a freebie for ABD. India were so tight against him in the first innings and that is why they succeeded. This would have been a fine delivery for Elgar, but ABD being a right-hander, used the down the leg-side juicy ball to tickle it fine to fine leg

W

to de Villiers, out Caught by Rahane!! Now then, now then, ABD is gone. He scored 6 runs off 3 balls, the next 9 were dots, opened him up earlier in the over with a couple of nuts and now he's prised out a massive wicket. This game is back in the balance. Back of a length just around the off stump, jumped a touch extra and de Villiers was trying to defend, got a thick edge and it flew straight to Jinks Rahane at gully. For a moment, it looked as if it would escape in the gap at gully. de Villiers c Rahane b 6(13) [4s-1]

4

to Elgar, FOUR, lucky boundary for South Africa, a frustrating boundary for India. Elgar wanted to leave this good length delivery, the ball bounced more than he thought and it hit the face of the bat and escaped past the cordon, Rahul actually got there, put it in the dive, but couldn't flick it back properly

W

to du Plessis, out Bowled!! That's shot through low! Almost as if to prove everyone that it is still naughty, the pitch plays tricks. This was on a good length outside off and nipped in sharply. What does du Plessis in here is the low bounce. Nothing much he could have done about it and this scooted through to rattle the furniture. The Indians are pumped. This game is getting more interesting now. Deservingly, it's who provides the breakthrough. He has been very good today. du Plessis b 2(9)

W

to de Kock, out Lbw!! Gone first ball! India are back in this, that is for certain. A golden duck for de Kock and his poor form continues. His feet didn't go anywhere and this straightened a tad from a full length to ping him on the front pad. Looked plumb in real time and Ian Gould had no hesitation in raising his finger. Pressure right back on the Proteas. Half the side down and suddenly that 96 more required seems a long way away. Must say that and Ishant have been terrific but will they find the same support from the others? Elgar is waging a lone battle at the moment. de Kock lbw b 0(1)

OT

to Elgar, no run, was always a gamble, especially with Karthik being confident of not hearing anything but Kohli wanted to go for it, mainly because this was Elgar. Short of a length delivery that climbed and whizzed past his attempted push. UltraEdge didn't detect anything and India have only one review left now

4

to Philander, FOUR, finds the fence! Philander has been a thorn in India's flesh this series and he has started well again. Freebie from who has struggled all through this game, short and wide, Philander slaps it through the covers. Races away

W

to Philander, out Bowled!! Dragged on! is pumped, the Indians are pumped. They are slowly tightening their grip on this Test match. Philander, who has been handy with his contributions in the series, has to perish. This was on the shorter length and he went for the pull but the bounce probably wasn't as much as he had anticipated. Gets a thick inside edge that rattles the timber. It is a procession out there at the moment from the Proteas and they are all deserting the brave Elgar. Philander b 10(18) [4s-1]

W

to Phehlukwayo, out Bowled!! Cleans him up! usually wakes up in the second innings, that's been the trend this series and he has woken up now for sure. A lovely fuller ball that swings in sharply, Phehlukwayo looks to defend without any feet movement, only manages an inside edge that rattles the timber after rebounding off the back pad. The Indians are all smiles. Safe to say that it's come down to that time of the game when we can actually mention the wickets needed to win rather than the runs required. At least for now. Phehlukwayo b 0(3)

W

to Rabada, out Caught by Pujara!! Edged and taken! Team India loves Jo'burg, they just don't like to lose here. Another one perishes and what a comeback this is! It's their premier guy who now gets into the act, who gets this outswinger to move late from a fuller length. A loose drive from Rabada and the edge flies to first slip where Pujara gobbles it up. Just a matter of time now, you would think. India are only 2 wickets away from a historic win. Rabada c Pujara b 0(3)

W

to Morne Morkel, out Bowled!! is on fire! Superb from India, the field was set for the short ball ploy and Morkel was expecting the same. But decides for the bluff and fires in a terrific yorker, Morkel cannot keep it out as the bat comes down late. Timber! The fat lady has started to sing, if she hadn't already. It might not change the series result but the look at the Indians and you would realize how much this means to them. They are just one wicket away now. Fourth scalp for . Morne Morkel b 0(1)

OT

to Elgar, 1 run, direct hit there and Elgar would have been in trouble. Fuller ball that he tapped towards mid-on and set off for the single. Ishant was a bit slow but he fire a good throw at the bowler's end, wasn't all that far away

OT

to Elgar, 1 run, run out chance missed! Pandya had all the time in the world to hit the stumps at the keeper's end, could have even gone up to the stumps and dislodged the bails. But, he goes for the direct hit and ends up missing. It was a yorker that Elgar dug out towards the off-side. Was always a risky run and Lungi Ngidi is lucky that the throw wasn't on target

4

to Lungi Ngidi, FOUR, bang! So much power from Ngidi, so much so that it's rebounded off the stumps at the bowler's end and it races down the ground to the fence. Too full from and it was smashed with a lot of might from the no.11

4

to Elgar, FOUR, deft touch from Elgar, he's battling along valiantly. If only someone had supported him from the lower middle order. This is a good length ball outside off, he waits for it and dabs it with soft hands. Off the outer half of the blade but he was well in control, through the slip cordon and away to the fence

6

to Elgar, SIX, terrific shot! Elgar has decided that he will play his shots. He has to, with only no.11 for company and the target a far way away. Fuller ball around off, gets across to that one and plays a pick up stroke over square leg. Middles it superbly to clear the ropes

W

to Lungi Ngidi, out Caught by (sub)Karthik!! Excellent review and that seals it! Huge roar from the Indian players as they see the umpire's finger going up. Short of a length ball that seamed away just a touch as Ngidi looked to poke at it. It flew through to Karthik who was immediately excited. Egged his skipper to go for the review and UltraEdge confirmed it with a spike. That's the end to the game and India win by 63 runs! They've had a tough time in the series with a lot of criticism and this will relieve them a lot. Lungi Ngidi c (sub)Karthik b 4(6) [4s-1]

4

to Parthiv Patel, FOUR, just over the slip cordon! Lucky four runs but Patel will take it. This nipped in from a shorter length and cramped him totally. He tried to fend at it but only managed a top edge that flew over a leaping de Kock to the third man fence. You need such fortune on a surface like this

4

to Parthiv Patel, FOUR, that's been glanced through fine leg. On leg-stump from over the wicket to the left-hander and Parthiv Patel just needed some bat on that. Does

4

to Parthiv Patel, FOUR, he's playing at a strike-rate of over 100. Shuffles across and whips it off his pads, going in direction of the movement

W

to Parthiv Patel, out Caught by Markram!! Take that. A diving catch by Markram at gully ends Parthiv's short sweet innings. Most fielders would have dropped it or might not have made anyway near it. Parthiv Patel was deceived by the seam movement this time. The ball seams in, takes the inside edge and deflects off the thigh. And when the world starts believing that it's landing in no-man's land, Markram swoops into picture and takes it, flying. Has Parthiv done what he was sent for? Parthiv Patel c Markram b 16(15) [4s-3]

4

to Rahul, FOUR, now Rahul was backing away here. bowls it very full and very wide outside off, and Rahul reaches out to slap the drive through covers. India will take this. A tad too full from here

4

Morkel to Vijay, FOUR, edged between the third slip and gully. And it runs away. Seam movement from a back of a length, Vijay is caught in the crease and Morkel has his hands on the back of his head. Familiar sight

4

Ngidi to Rahul, FOUR, he's overpitched that in greed. And pays the price, seeing that drilled through wide mid-off. Nicely played too, hands flowing through the line of the ball

4

Morkel to Rahul, leg byes, FOUR, does Rahul gets a touch here? Nah, off the pad here. Sliding down, beats the attempted glance and then beats de Kock too

W

to Rahul, out Caught by du Plessis!! Poor from Rahul. What a bad shot. Was leaving all those deliveries, but pushed out at a very wide delivery outside off and edges it to second slip. Faf won't miss that. He takes it and then tumbles backwards. That's the opening South Africa and needed. They haven't bowled well at all, but have been gifted this wicket by Rahul. His horror tour ends. Dhawan replacing him soon? Rahul c du Plessis b 16(44) [4s-2]

4

Morkel to Pujara, leg byes, FOUR, poor from Morkel, shouldn't be targetting the pads, with fine leg very square, takes the thigh pad and runs away beating de Kock

W

Morkel to Pujara, out Caught by du Plessis!! That's what he can do. He can be unplayable when he bowls like this. Pujara got one from Morkel at Cape Town like this, there he edged to de Kock, now look at this, rising short of length delivery attacking the splice off the bat, on the back foot block, try as much as he could, Pujara cannot defend, it lobs to Faf who takes a dolly - reverse cup and then tumbles over. South Africa on fire. Pujara walks away looking at the big screen, but he shouldn't be too unhappy, for that was close to unplayable as it can get. Pujara c du Plessis b Morkel 1(10)

4

to Kohli, FOUR, lovely delivery and an even better shot. There's danger involved in that shot, but Kohli has creamed that off the front foot. Full outswinger, curved away, Kohli on the front foot and just a beautiful flow of the bat and four wide of cover. Fine way to get off the mark

D

Morkel to Kohli, no run, almost a repeat? Can't call that a dropped chance, but a half-chance for sure. Firmly flicked to short leg, where Markram doesn't get up, tries to move his hand to catch that, but it has hit his right leg and hasn't lobbed straight up, nor does it carry to backward square. A stroke of luck for Kohli

4

to Kohli, FOUR, aggressively played. Dug in short outside off, Kohli goes for a flat-batted pull, straight of mid-on, hit well and beats Morkel

4

Ngidi to Kohli, FOUR, beautiful drive through cover. Too full from Ngidi and Kohli laced that, a mini stride forward and thump, beating the diving fielder, four crucial runs added to the total

4

to Vijay, byes, FOUR, wasted delivery. Fired down leg, no chance for a diving de Kock, he tried his best but the ball kept swerving away

4

Ngidi to Kohli, FOUR, he is batting really well. Fraction too full and Kohli got forward to play the on-drive. Since the length is too full, made it easy for Kohli to put it away, wide of mid-on and it rolls away

W

to Vijay, out Bowled!! That's KG at his best. He can bowl the yorker at will. Does Vijay in completely. Certainly Vijay didn't expect it. KG roars in delight. He loved that. That will be lunch as well. Vijay is a very frustrated man, he is walking away, swiping the bat into the turf. Superb yorker, Vijay didn't pick it, tried to clear his toes from the line of the ball, the bat came down late, thin bottom edge and back on to the stumps. Just when things were going flat, KG does the trick. Vijay b 25(127) [4s-1]

4

to Kohli, FOUR, that's nicely played, width on offer outside off and Kohli makes full use of the pace on the ball. Waits for the short of length delivery to come, opens the face of the bat and guides it past gully where there is a big gap

4

to Kohli, FOUR, brilliant drive, gee he's batting superbly out there. is looking for the outside edge, so he's bowling full and just outside off stump, Kohli being positive, gets a stride forward and times the cover-drive to perfection, gets to the right of the man at cover and it runs away for four

4

to Rahane, FOUR, this is excellent batting. As soon as he saw the width on the ball he went for the cut shot with no half measures. Didn't bother to keep it down and hit it well enough to clear the man at point

4

Morkel to Rahane, FOUR, this intent has been very good from Rahane and he's playing the way one should be playing on this pitch. No chance of surviving trying to block everything, so when it's in his zone, he's goind hard at them. Full and in the slot outside off stump, Rahane cover-drives, hits it deliberately in the air too

4

Morkel to Rahane, FOUR, oh lovely shot from Rahane. He's batting very well out there. Full and on the leg stump, poor line from , Rahane makes full use of it and flicks from the middle of the bat and through mid-wicket

W

to Kohli, out Bowled!! You can't do much about that ball. Brilliant delivery, moves back in off the surface. Kohli stands in disbelief and then drags himself off. The ball hits the top of off stump and that's a great sight for a fast bowler. Kohli still looking back as he walks off, probably wants to have a look at the replay on the big screen. The ball pitched around the good length zone, hit a crack and cut back in sharply, Kohli played the line correctly but just left a bit of gap between bat and pad and the ball spotted that. So KG has got two massive wickets, two crucial batsmen, both bowled, one before and the other after lunch. Got to say that this innings from Kohli has to be rated highly. A tough pitch to bat on, been very unpredictable, but the feature of his innings was the way he was confidently defending, leaving and driving the ball. Can South Africa work on this opening and close the innings quickly? Kohli b 41(79) [4s-6]

4

to Rahane, FOUR, and Rahane continues to play those lovely drives. Looks like India want to make use of the lack of pace from . Definitely looking to score when it's too full. Outswinger outside off stump, Rahane drives past the diving cover fielder

4

to Rahane, FOUR, and again, if it's full and in the zone, he's playing them nicely. Overpitched and not swinging much, Rahane on-drives, almost knocks off Pandya at the other end and mid-on was too wide to have a chance

W

to Hardik Pandya, out Caught&Bowled!! That was way too soft from Pandya. KG caught that so easily. Pandya walked out to as he has been doing, probably was expecting a short ball. dished out a full ball and Pandya ended up chipping it straight back towards the bowler, the ball flew close to and he stuck his right hand out to catch it nonchalantly. He has a shy at the striker's end as Pandya was out of the crease. Immediately apologises to the batsman and umpire Aleem Dar has a chat with regarding the throw. Just an instinctive throw maybe, didn't look intentional. Hardik Pandya c and b 4(11)

4

to Rahane, FOUR, lovely shot! bowls full and outside off stump, Rahane leans forward, reaches out to the ball and drives it through cover-point, there was a man at deep point but the timing was good enough for the ball to run off

4

to Bhuvneshwar, FOUR, lofted off-drive off the back foot and he's cleared the man at short mid-off. Backed away slightly to this short of length delivery and hit that in the air over the infield

D

Morkel to Bhuvneshwar, no run, Oh Dean Elgar has dropped it! Came at a tough height, he was unsure whether to go reverse cup and the normal way. He went the normal way and it came around the chest height, tough angle to catch and it pops out. Short delivery angled across, Bhuvneshwar pushes at it and gets a thick edge that went straight to gully. Frustration for Morkel

D

to Rahane, 2 runs, oh dear! Another catch put down and this is South Africa that is on the field. Unbelievable. Livid faces on the field and in the dressing room. Short and wide outside off stump, Rahane cut that in the air, didn't want to keep it down, Phehlukwayo runs to his right, gets easily to the ball, was an easy catch but it bursts through his hands. The catching has been iffy from the Proteas in this game. Phehlukwayo and Elgar would hope these two don't carry on for long

4

to Bhuvneshwar, FOUR, edged away for four. Late away swing for and Bhuvneshwar threw his hands at it with the width on offer on this full ball, gets a thick outside edge that flies over gully

OT

Morkel to Bhuvneshwar, no run, South Africa burn a review down now. They think Bhuvneshwar's been strangled down leg-side. They do look confident, do South Africa. The snickometer is a dead duck as the ball goes past the inside of Bhuvneshwar's flick. Hits the side of the back pad there, the strap, so no bat involved. Now they check for the lbw too, why not, and that's going down leg by a mile. Review lost...

W

Morkel to Rahane, out Caught by de Kock!! Possibly the worst way to get out on this devil of a pitch. Third appeal for caught down leg-side after tea and this one comes off. Morkel angles the ball in, Rahane is slightly late on the leg-glance and gets a thin nick on that. But let's not talk about that any more. This has been a fantastic knock from someone who saw India lose the series from the dressing room. Rahane c de Kock b Morkel 48(68) [4s-6]

6

Morkel to Shami, SIX, what have we seen, what? First six of the game. And it's Shami taking Morkel to the cleaners. Takes a back of a length ball on and deposits it into the square leg stands with a huge hand-powered swivel

4

to Shami, FOUR, Shami's has picked that off.. in a direction opposite to what he wanted. Has the room, swings his arms at the length and gets the toe-end flying over the keeper's head

6

to Shami, SIX, oh. my. goodness. He's cleared everything again. A absolute chastening for . Shami goes a little leg-side and mows this ball over mid-wicket. Even the cameraman lost the ball and it took Ian Gould some time to adjudge it as a six. Wow. Shami's happening

W

Ngidi to Shami, out Caught by de Villiers!! Finds ABD at deep square leg but he's done his job with a run-a-ball Test match cameo. The short ball seams back into him, but trust me when I say that he had it covered. Swats across the line but there's a fielder for that exact uppish hit. Falls to it. Would have wanted to go at it harder, like he has all innings. Shami c de Villiers b Ngidi 27(28) [4s-1 6s-2]

W

Morkel to Bhuvneshwar, out Caught by de Kock!! Fended to the keeper. Morkel from round the wicket immediately looked like a difficult proposition. And Bhuvneshwar finds it second ball into the over. Tries to get his bat high and get behind this short ball but it's rushing at him with bounce. Only manages some bat on it. End of a reassuring innings from India's all-rounder. Bhuvneshwar c de Kock b Morkel 33(76) [4s-2]

4

Ngidi to Ishant, FOUR, drilled into the ad cushions. Makes room for this indipping full ball and hammers it through extra cover. Ravi Shaz likes it in the dressing room. Claps

W

to Bumrah, out Caught by Rabada!! South Africa need 241 runs to win 3-0. Bumrah backed away and just about managed a toe-end on this away-seaming delivery. Straight to mid-on. Bumrah c Rabada b 0(7)

W

to Markram, out Caught by Parthiv Patel!! The trick with is that he doesn't bowl too full. Gets the seam movement from the back of a length here, Markram thinks he can defend it off the back foot but isn't quite able to get behind the line. Edged; carries at a nice height to the keeper. Markram c Parthiv Patel b 2(8)

4

to Rabada, FOUR, good delivery but an edge and it runs wide of the third slip. And to the fence. gets unlucky. Pitched it full on middle, it swerved away, Rabada was hanging on the back foot, gets a soft edge that dribbles along the ground and wide of anyone

W

to Elgar, out Caught by Parthiv Patel!! Finally gets the edge and Elgar is gone. A painstaking innings. Ends. Clever from to get this on the stumps, generally it doesn't seam away when you do that, but since there's prodigious movement off the deck, this one does and Elgar in defending had no option but to nick that. Good diving low catch to his left by Parthiv Patel as well. He set him up very well and then got the nick after beating him so many times. Elgar c Parthiv Patel b 4(40)

4

to Rabada, FOUR, he's played superbly today. Has played one hour and this is a shot of the highest order. Overpitched on the pads, he gets forward and flicks effortlessly wide of mid-on. Raced off the middle of the bat

4

to Amla, FOUR, Amla gets lucky. Is half-hearted on the pull, but sees the top edge fly away over the slips, almost all the way, one bounce over the ropes. That could've gone straight up, like Pandya's yesterday

4

to Amla, FOUR, fantastic back foot punch from Amla. He is South Africa's Che. Soaks up everything and then waits for the bad ball to be put away, back and across before rising on his toes to punch that through backward point. Raced away

4

to Rabada, FOUR, lovely square drive. Saw the full delivery outside off and allowed his hands to run through the ball. Reached out but the feet moved nicely and he was able to time that right off the middle of the bat. Into the gap at backward point. A little smile dots Rabada's face

4

to Rabada, FOUR, wow! Look at the reaction in the Protea camp. That tells how good a shot this is. Rabada walks across nonchalantly outside off and then whips the full ball through square leg. Held the pose too as the ball ran away. Lots of smiles in the hosts' change room. They liked that. Caribbean flavor to that and shows how much talent Rabada has with the bat

4

to Rabada, FOUR, he is playing a blinder now. How about that for confidence? He is oozing every bit of it at the moment. Walks at and then lifts the fullish delivery over mid-off. Didn't time it all that well, but got enough on it to clear the fielder

OT

to Amla, leg byes, 1 run, given not out for lbw. Against Amla. Kohli has a look and then reviews. No problems with the no-ball. Where's the point of impact? In line. Height could well save Amla. Above the kneeroll. Waiting for ball-tracking now. Umpire's call it is on hitting. Amla survives. The bat came in the way of the pad there and that's why Amla got into a pickle, trying to turn to leg, everything going for it except the height. That's why the onfield call is so important and Dar goes with the batsman

4

to Rabada, FOUR, the luck is running with South Africa and Rabada at the moment. A genuine edge and there's no gully. Right where one would've been. Full on off and induces the loose drive, catchable height but there's no-one there. Races away. Frustrating for India

4

to Amla, FOUR, fabulous drive. Brilliant. goes full looking for swing, but he has overpitched and a sumptous cover-drive by Amla. He tried that last ball, but this time, the stride was well forward and it came off the middle of the bat

4

to Amla, FOUR, nicely played. is definitely going for the lbw, but Amla has glanced that from off stump and gets it fine of Parthiv Patel. Races away. feels that he was close to hitting the pad. That's the price you pay when you target Amla's pads

4

to Amla, FOUR, poor bowling. Overpitched on the pads, Amla flicks and goes over square leg. Too easy for a player of his class. India need to get their lines and lengths sorted, or else this ploy could bleed runs

W

to Rabada, out Caught by Rahane!! A standing ovation for Rabada. Not often you see a batsman getting that for 30. But he has almost batted through the entire session and wore down the Indian bowlers. This is a very good ball which dismisses him. Short of a length on middle, bouncing naturally with 's height, moves a bit, takes the edge and Rahane latches onto an overhead catch at fourth slip/gully. Good hands shown for the ball was travelling. is more relieved than anything else. Rabada c Rahane b 30(84) [4s-6]

OT

to Amla, leg byes, 1 run, big shout for LBW, Kohli and Bhuvi looked convinced and they decided to send it upstairs. Amla moved across the stumps and missed the flick, the ball hit him just above the kneeroll from a good length, impact was on off stump, but ball-tracker reckoned that the ball would have only clipped the top of off stump (umpire's call) and that's just what Amla needed to escape the review

W

to de Villiers, out Bowled!! Wowwww! Just wow! You have just castled AB de Villiers through the gate with a big inswinger and the middle pole is shattered. What a sight and look at roar! This was full and heading towards the sticks, de Villiers wanted to play the on-drive, but the late inswing took him completely by surprise, just brushed the back leg and crashed into the stumps. Key to AB's dismissal: India had him on the mat not allowing him to play positive cricket, which wasn't the case in the earlier games. Ishant troubled AB right through with the incoming angle, remember even Bumrah troubling AB to an extent in the first innings fifty at Cape Town. de Villiers b 5(19)

4

to du Plessis, FOUR, uppish but over the cordon. Shortish and angled in, du Plessis awkwardly tries to play off the back foot, went for an uppish push, the ball took the edge and flew over gully

4

to Amla, FOUR, this is the shot Amla wanted to play previous ball, similar ball, fullish and then just nipping away, Amla was well outside the crease, had it covered and flicked it wide of mid-on

OT

to Amla, no run, that's a poor call from umpire Ian Gould. Impact was clearly way outside off stump in real time, but the appeal was very confident from India. Bhuvi went "howzatt, howzatt, howzatt" for about six to seven times and Gould raised the finger after a long long thought. Short of a length delivery outside off stump, Amla tried to defend, the ball brushed the pad before hitting the bat, Amla had that movement across the stumps which put him well outside off stump. Amla reviewed immediately and got the decision reversed as the impact was way outside off stump and the ball wasn't even hitting the sticks

W

to du Plessis, out Bowled!! He's left this ball and it's disturbed the off stump. They are checking for the no-ball and just escapes with his heel just inside. Poor judgement from Faf. Was never happy facing incoming deliveries. bowls scrambled seam and can nip it back into you off the pitch, du Plessis thought this would miss him, but it came sharply enough to brush the back pad and hit the off stump. India have been excellent with the ball post lunch. du Plessis b 8(19) [4s-1]

4

to Amla, FOUR, first ball in his new spell and Amla punches confidently off the back foot through the vacant point region. Short of a length and outside off stump, Amla hit that with authority

4

to de Kock, FOUR, that's way outside off stump and de Kock looks to cut, gets it on the bottom of the bat, the ball escapes gully and rockets for four

4

to de Kock, leg byes, FOUR, the umpire initially gave that as runs. Poor review from India. is bowling from round the wicket, so it has to be at least on middle stump for the ball to hit the leg stump, de Kock missed the flick and the impact was already on leg, meaning it was clearly going down the leg-side

W

to de Kock, out Caught by Parthiv Patel!! Inside edge and that's a good grab by Parthiv. Good length delivery angled across, maybe, just maybe straightened a touch, de Kock was anyway going for a full-blooded off-drive, got a thick edge and Parthiv ran to his right to complete the catch. India have got a key wicket, QdK can score them quickly. de Kock c Parthiv Patel b 8(22) [4s-1]

4

to Philander, FOUR, Philander knows he can't survive defending on this pitch, so goes through with the pull shot as the ball doesn't rise much to trouble him, played uppishly through mid-wicket for four

OT

to Amla, 1 run, fifty for Amla, a fighting fifty - 37th in Tests. Gentle raise of the bat to the crowd and the dressing room. Good length delivery nipping back in, Amla was hurried on the defence, the ball took the inside edge and rolled to fine leg

4

to Philander, FOUR, this is a freebie and a criminal offence on such a pitch especially. Short and very wide outside off, Philander just stands tall and slaps it through the gap at cover. Four easy runs

4

to Philander, FOUR, top quality shot! This would made a top order batsman proud, especially on such a surface. The outswinger from and it's a trifle full. Still not a half-volley though and Philander did extremely well to get a stride forward before pummeling the drive on the up through cover. Nobody budged

4

to Philander, FOUR, Oh my, what a stroke! Graeme Smith on air compares it to the signature Jacques Kallis stroke. Back of a length and just fractionally wide, Philander stands tall and nails the back foot punch through point. Scorching stroke and it's probably one of the shots of the day

W

to Amla, out Caught by Hardik Pandya!! This is a weird dismissal! India won't mind it though because this is a massive wicket. They had the men in the deep on the leg-side which meant could attack the stumps more and that's what he does with a fuller ball. However, it's Amla's shot that is a bit strange here. He goes for the flick but never wanted to keep it down. Pandya at deep mid-wicket just ambled across a bit to his right to take it easily. There was a similar shot played early in his innings but that made sense because there wasn't anyone near the fence. Anyways, it's been a fine innings from the veteran but this could be the opening India badly wanted. The fight for the lead continues to shift balance. Amla c Hardik Pandya b 61(121) [4s-7]

4

to Philander, FOUR, edged but splits the slips and gully! Third slip would have gobbled this but there isn't anyone there. Short of a length delivery that rises a touch and Philander just pokes at it. The outside edge flies through the gap and down to the third man fence. Handy runs

W

to Philander, out Caught by Bumrah!! That's the end of Philander. But not after he's played an invaluable hand. The short ball and he decides to take it on with a pull. Only manages a top edge due to the extra bounce and Bumrah at fine leg gets across to take the catch calmly. They check for the no ball but is perfectly fine on that count. So, Philander has to continue walking. His right hand was in a bit of pain for a while now and that could be one of the reasons behind him trying to attack a bit. SA will be a touch worried about that. Philander c Bumrah b 35(55) [4s-5]

4

to Phehlukwayo, FOUR, scorching drive! Another shot that demands repeated viewing. Overpitched from and Phehlukwayo takes full toll of it. Moves forward to unleash a thumping drive on the up. Races away. Trail below 10 now

4

to Morne Morkel, FOUR, worked away and this is gold for SA. Fuller ball and on the pads, Morkel gets across a bit to flick it away through square leg. Timed sweetly and it races away to the fence. The Proteas inch closer now

4

to Morne Morkel, FOUR, SA are into the lead! Huge roar from the sparse crowd and also the Proteas camp. This is a stunning shot from Morkel. Makes a bit of room and clobbers this length ball down the ground. Mid-on had no chance at all. What a game this is turning out to be! Lots of twists and turns

4

to Phehlukwayo, FOUR, switches to over the wicket and angles a full ball across Phehlukwayo, he just leans into the drive and times it sweetly. Beats Kohli at mid-off comfortably and it speeds away. Kohli seemed to have landed badly but looks okay to continue

W

to Phehlukwayo, out Lbw!! has his fourth! Gets the direction of his attempted yorker right but this ended up as a full toss that Phehlukwayo was late on. Gets pinged on the pad and the umpire's finger went up rather quickly for LBW. Phehlukwayo gambled with the DRS but as is the case with full tosses, the only doubt was if he had got some bat on it. UltraEdge and Snicko showed nothing, HawkEye drove home the point to show it hitting leg stump. will be keen to register a 5-fer. Phehlukwayo lbw b 9(17) [4s-2]

W

to Lungi Ngidi, out Caught by Parthiv Patel!! That's the maiden 5-fer in Tests for ! Deserving indeed! Was the greenhorn of the team before the series but how quickly has he made a big statement. Wasn't a wicket-taking ball this, short ball that was going down leg but Ngidi couldn't get the pull away. Gloves it a touch and Parthiv Patel did extremely well to take this catch diving to his left. Good stuff from the keeper and SA finish with 194. A slender lead of 7. Lungi Ngidi c Parthiv Patel b 0(2)

4

Morkel to Vijay, FOUR, streaky runs! Morkel gets this fuller and it moves away a shade as well, draws Vijay into a drive but without any footwork at all. Flies off the outer half but just wide of gully

W

to Rahul, out Caught by de Kock!! There is the first wicket! No surprises on who has provided the breakthrough. It had to be , right? Gets this bang on in terms of length outside off, the nip backer and Rahul's feet go nowhere as he pushes tamely at it. Off the inside edge and brushes the back thigh before de Kock does the rest. Just the start SA were after. Rahul c de Kock b 0(7)

OT

to Pujara, no run, Pujara survives! Did look a touch high in real time and that's what has saved him, only just though because if this was given out, it would have stayed that way. Lovely inswinger and Pujara didn't pick it, got pinged flush on the front pad. was very convinced, as he usually is and forced du Plessis into the review. In the end, it was clipping the top of the stumps. Review retained though, so not a bad gamble from SA

4

Morkel to Vijay, byes, FOUR, erratic from Morkel, he's sprayed this way down leg and Vijay cannot flick it away. Nor can de Kock get to it despite a desperate dive

W

to Vijay, out Caught by de Kock!! Such a poor shot. This is so unlike Vijay. He was India's star when they toured away 3-4 years back. But this Vijay looks a pale shadow of that one. Full outside off, easily could've left that alone, but attempted to cover-drive with the feet not moving an inch. Predictably edged it and is walking back. strikes in his first over and India are two down in no time. Vijay c de Kock b 8(32) [4s-1]

4

to Kohli, FOUR, Kohli gets off the mark with a fine cover-drive. Half-volley outside off, Kohli is on the front foot and then unleashes a firm drive off the front foot, right off the middle of the bat and it raced away. The feet moved nicely

D

to Kohli, no run, oh! My! is livid. Philander very slow to get across and drops a sitter at mid-off. The Proteas can't believe it. The short ball and Kohli is miles late on that, beaten for sheer pace and straight off the toe end, lobs to mid-off where Philander completely misjudges the flight and it falls to ground. Not sure whether he got a hand on it in the end. A real clanger!

4

to Kohli, FOUR, shot. Lovely square-drive. The feet moved well and he hit it into the gap. Was a fraction too full from and Kohli got across nicely to put it away

4

to Kohli, FOUR, slashes and slashes hard. Even though it was in the air, he knew there was no second gully. Short and wide outside off, Kohli gets a boundary through the backward point region

4

Morkel to Kohli, FOUR, punchy and four. Tad too full from Morkel and Kohli strode forward to drive that wide of mid-off. Well in control and that's the way to put the bad ball away

4

to Pujara, FOUR, Pujara gets one away. He can play the cut well. This is fraction short outside off, Pujara rocks back to cut through backward point and it rolls away. Played it down too

4

to Pujara, FOUR, consecutive fours. Is this Pujara or someone else? But a bad ball it must be said. Short and wide outside off, Pujara cuts in front of cover and hits the gap once more

4

Morkel to Kohli, FOUR, softly guided wide of AB at third slip. And four. Plays away from the body a tad but is in control of this steer. Down to ground and to the vacant third man region

D

Morkel to Kohli, 2 runs, dropped by AB at third slip. Bad cricket all-round. How often do you see AB drop a catch! Very rare. Short and wide outside off, Kohli reached out and did well to get bat on the cut. Off the toe end and maybe it dipped on AB who is a bit surprised and the ball hits the edge of the fingers and goes to ground. Second life for Kohli. AB felt the pain of the drop and the ball hitting the fingers

4

to Pujara, FOUR, wait. wait. wait. Then get the bad ball. Four. That's Pujara's game. He is the ultimate sponge. Absorbs everything thrown at you. When overpitches, he drills him over Kohli's head and gets a boundary. Has a stare at too. That's "intent" right there

4

Morkel to Kohli, FOUR, now a beautiful off-drive by Kohli. Too full from Morkel, Kohli with a half-stride forward, punches past Morkel's dive and the ball scuds off the bat. Fantastic full face of the bat shown there

4

Morkel to Kohli, FOUR, the luck is with Kohli. At least four times, including this one, he could've got out today, but he has survived them all. Is late on the defence, the ball takes the inside edge onto back leg and misses the bails. de Kock didn't even dive across as he knew it was well away from his reach. Four more to Kohli

4

to Kohli, FOUR, terrific response from Kohli. When pitches it up, he strides forward and times the drive, wide of cover and it raced away. Statement from the Indian skipper

4

to Kohli, FOUR, lucky 50 but he will take this and probably rate this as one of his toughest Test innings. Came in when the side was 13/2 and has used all his good fortune to bring up a totally un-Kohli like innings. Has battled on, struggled, played and missed. Dropped twice and then has put the bad balls away. Stroked a few delightful fours in between as well. Gets there with a fine pull, was a short delivery on the stumps, he times it through square leg. A raise of the bat and Pujara pats him on the back

W

Ngidi to Kohli, out Caught by de Villiers!! Ngidi gets Kohli. His mom and dad are all smiles. Poor batting from Kohli though. He has chanced his luck once too often in this innings and this time AB won't drop him at third slip. Congrats to Ngidi's parents at the Bull Ring. Was a driveable ball, but it was outside off, Kohli went hard and edged it, again it looked like AB didn't pick it, went reverse-cup as the ball came near his tummy. Holds on and tumbles backwards. His mates swarm him and he opens his eyes fully to express that he almost lost it. A wicket just at the right time for South Africa and the impressive Ngidi gets Kohli out. Kohli c de Villiers b Ngidi 54(106) [4s-9]

4

to Pujara, FOUR, flashed and flashed hard. Short and wide outside off, Pujara throws the kitchen sink at that, didn't bother to ride the bounce and the thickish outside edge flies over the cordon. was quite wide in this over

4

Morkel to Rahane, FOUR, overpitched and Rahane puts it away. This was similar to the one Pujara missed out in the previous Morkel over. Rahane has a small stride forward and then allows his hands to take over, bit uppish but well wide of the mid-off fielder. Raced away to the fence

W

Morkel to Rahane, out Lbw!! This could have gone either way and it has gone in favour of South Africa. Kohli is bemused in the dressing room, but there is not much he can do. This was very similar to one Pujara survived in the morning session, umpire Ian Gould gave that not out and this time he raised his finger. Both were clipping the leg-stump. Slanted in from a good length and Rahane is beaten on the flick, rapped in front of leg-stump. Gould gave it a long thought before giving it out. Rahane decided to take his chance and review it, but HawkEye had it kissing the leg-pole, matter of centimeters. The movement after missing the ball might have been his undoing, Rahane moved across his stumps and that went against him. Rahane lbw b Morkel 9(27) [4s-1]

4

Ngidi to Pujara, FOUR, slapped away! Short and wide from Ngidi to start with, Pujara pounces on the offering with a back-foot cut through the covers. It's a slowish outfield here but this has the legs to go past the ropes

4

Ngidi to Pujara, byes, FOUR, terrible from Ngidi, probably wanted to bowl a magic ball with the nip-backer but this goes way down leg. Not even de Kock with a dive can get anywhere near to it

4

Ngidi to Pujara, FOUR, creamed! Probably the first cover drive Pujara has played today and he's executed it well. Overcooked from Ngidi, Pujara just gets a good stride forward and drills the drive to perfection. Beats a diving extra cover fielder en route to the fence

4

Ngidi to Pujara, FOUR, nicely done. Pujara is showing more intent on putting the bad balls away. This is short and wide from Ngidi, there to be hit and it's been cut away nicely through cover-point. Races away. Three boundaries in as many overs now for Pujara against Ngidi

4

to Pujara, FOUR, fine leg is quite squarer and Pujara gets this leg glance very fine down to the fence. Off-radar from , strays onto the pads and pays the price

OT

Ngidi to Pujara, 2 runs, nicely done! Back of a length and wider as well, rocks back to cut it away through backward point. Gets back for the second and that's the 17th Test fifty for Pujara. Has been a trademark innings from him - all resolve and determination with a fair amount of grit sprinkled in

W

to Pujara, out Caught by de Kock!! Nicked and it's been pouched! Oh Pujara! It had been a determined knock till now and he saw off the major threats but has succumbed to . Credit to the bowler though, this was coming in with the angle and probably just held a fraction before moving away. Pujara was in two minds to play or leave but eventually couldn't resist the temptation of playing it. Gets a feather behind. Massive wicket for South Africa. They will be smelling blood now. A fine knock from Pujara but he knows he should have carried on. Pujara c de Kock b 50(179) [4s-8]

W

Morkel to Parthiv Patel, out Caught by de Kock!! Poor from Patel and he has to go! Short of a length outside off, a bit of extra bounce as he goes for the cut. Only manages a thick edge that flies straight to de Kock who makes no mistake. They checked if Morkel's back foot cut the side crease but it seems okay. Like you would expect with such a pitch, one wicket quickly brings the second as well. India now stuck with the all-rounder and the tail. Parthiv Patel c de Kock b Morkel 2(22)

W

to Hardik Pandya, out Caught by de Kock!! Wow! Why would you do that? These kind of shots make all the hard work done by Pujara and Kohli go to waste. Short delivery outside off, Pandya walks across and pulls, always dangerous with the ball hooping around, the extra bounce takes the top-edge and flies over the cordon. de Kock calls for it, turns back and goes for the catch, takes it with a full length dive. Superb take from the glovesman. Made it look easy. Fifth dismissal for him. Nought for Pandya and India are three wickets away from being bowled out. Hardik Pandya c de Kock b 0(5)

4

to Bhuvneshwar, FOUR, Bhuvneshwar has decided to play his shots. Could sense it in the previous ball. On a length and outside off, gets a big stride forward and creams the drive through the vacant cover region. No half measures there, gave it everything

4

Morkel to Shami, FOUR, Morkel is not pleased with the field placing. The ball eludes the fancy third man positioned. Short and outside off, Shami slashes and the thickish outside edge flies to the sub de Bruyn near third man, he leapt up and still couldn't reach it

4

Morkel to Bhuvneshwar, FOUR, edged and four. Morkel goes full and immediately finds the edge. Bhuvneshwar played it well though, softened the impact with loose hands and the outside edge bisects the cordon - gully and third slip

W

to Shami, out Caught by Rabada!! Finally, Shami finds a fielder. It was just a matter of time before he did. He looks at the toe-end of the bat as he walks back. Faf sent back mid-on and quite sure he said Rabada at mid-off also to take a couple of steps back. Shami finds the latter to perfection. Full delivery just outside off, Shami lofts sans footwork and the cue-end lobs to Rabada. A dolly it is and South Africa are two wickets away from batting. Shami c Rabada b 8(16) [4s-1]

to Ishant, out Caught by du Plessis!! There's something about . Comes back for another spell and strikes first ball. And puts on an expressionless face, as if he anticipated this. Might have. Bowls it as full as he can on off-stump, Ishant is trying to push it out with a straight bat but a bit of movement does him. Low catch to Faf at second slip and that's well taken by the skipper. Ishant c du Plessis b 0(12)

to Bumrah, leg byes, FOUR, South Africa review for leg-before. And after that's been given as byes by the onfield umpire! Dear me. That's decked in a long way off the pitch and went down leg. I believe it did hit something, yeah. Comes in a long way from outside off and brushes the side of the front thigh. Bumrah wasn't offering a shot. Was in the middle of doing so before this ball hit a crack and went off its rocker. Impact, which was umpire's call on leg-stump then doesn't matter but it was going down leg too. So no dice. And the ump has changed his decision to leg byes

to Bhuvneshwar, FOUR, he has to do it now. Doesn't quite get hold of it but he's backed away and thumped it straight through the other side of the stumps. is from over the wicket. Went too hard and the loose bottom hand nearly came off

Ngidi to Bhuvneshwar, FOUR, smacked uppishly through mid-off. Doesn't quite get it with a flat bat. It honestly turned but gave it a real waft

to Bhuvneshwar, out Caught by Phehlukwayo!! India bowled out for 187 after opting to bat first. Backs away to a short ball but he's pulling against the angle. Not in control and the wide mid-on/mid-wicket in place takes a good sliding take. Bhuvneshwar c Phehlukwayo b 30(49) [4s-4]
