ICC Cricket World Cup Warm-up Matches, 2019
Venue: Sophia Gardens, Cardiff
Date & Time: 28 May 2019
RR: 5.33 | India beat Bangladesh by 95 runs
So we are done and dusted with the warm-ups. They have served well as an appetizer, now it's time for the main event. We are just a couple of days away from the beginning of the biggest event in world cricket. Hosts England take on South Africa in the opener of the World Cup on 30th May. That game will begin at 1030 local (0930 GMT). Make sure you join us for that one. Till then, Cheers!
Virat Kohli says the biggest positive to come out of the game was how KL Rahul batted at number 4. He says that KL is a great guy and needs confidence. Also praises Dhoni as well as the bowlers who played their best game in this one. Suggests it could be tricky to decide what to do first in these conditions as it does get better to bat in the second innings whereas there is spin as well. But the Indian skipper feels that the swing in the morning is very important and can decide how the game pans out at time. Regarding Rohit and Dhawan, Virat mentions that they wanted to bat second today but he is not too worried about them as they are quality players. Kohli admits that with so much cricket, warm-up games might not be that motivating for some. States that 50-over games can be difficult and that today the last 15 overs were challenging on the field, especially because they were running through the motions as there was no contest. He though tells that in case it is the real World Cup going on, there will be no lack of intensity.
Bangladesh skipper, Mashrafe Mortaza says that after Ireland and this game they have had enough match practice for the last 4 weeks. States that there are some small niggles but they want to take care of the bowlers considering the first match is just two days away for them. Reckons that their top order is batting well and different people are putting their hands up at the right time, and hopes they will know their roles come the group stage.
Earlier in the day, India after being put into bat put 359 runs on the board courtesy brilliant tons from KL Rahul and MS Dhoni. After the top order collapsed the two put on a 164-run stand for the 5th wicket and put on a massive total on the board.
As for India's bowling, 7 bowlers were used in total. Hardik Pandya did not bowl any over in this game and the four seamers, Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar, Shami and Vijay Shankar bowled just 20 overs between them. Jasprit Bumrah was the only pacer though to get into the wickets column with his 2. The day though belonged to the Indian spinners, especially the two front-line wrist spinners. Chahal and Kuldeep bowled 20 overs amongst themselves and picked up 3 wickets each. Jadeja too picked up a wicket in his 9.3 overs. But Kuldeep picking up wickets would have boosted his confidence after he was going through a lean patch. Overall it was a good day for the Indian players ahead of the start of the mega event.
Chasing 360, Bangladesh got off to a solid start, with both openers, Soumya Sarkar and Liton Das getting off the blocks quickly. Sarkar though could not continue and was dismissed to Bumrah. Shakib who came next went out for a golden duck. Rahim and Liton Das though then steadied the ship with a 120 run-stand with both batsmen getting to their respective fifties. But after that Bangladesh kept losing wickets in regular intervals and never actually looked to get close to India's total.
Comprehensive victory for India in the end. This match has cancelled out any fears Indian supporters and think-tank would have had regarding the team. Bangladesh, meanwhile, have a few things to think about and would be hoping that it was just a one-off before the World Cup.
Run out appeal taken up! The batsmen try to take three runs and might have ended up being run out here. Mehidy dived but looked short to the naked eye. Let's see what the replays have to say!
Ravindra Jadeja to bowl the final over of the warm-ups.
Rubel Hossain walks out at number 11.
Run out appeal taken upstairs. Mehidy Hasan is the man in question. He looks to be home let's see what the replays have to say though.
Review time! An LBW appeal from Shankar is turned down by the umpire. It looked like it pitched outside leg to the naked eye. Let us see what the replays have to say!
Vijay Shankar to have a go now.
Yuzvendra Chahal comes back on.
Mehidy Hasan walks out to bat next.
Powerplay 3 time! 5 fielders will be allowed outside the 30-yard circle till the end now. 144 needed in 60 now.
Mohammad Saifuddin is in next. He will face the third hat-trick ball of this innings!
Mosaddek Hossain walks out to bat at number 8.
MS Dhoni goes off now, Dinesh Karthik comes back on as a keeper, probably for the remainder of the game!
Review time! A LBW appeal against Sabbir has been turned down. The ball was spinning in after landing outside off, probably was hitting in line as well. Looks like height could be the only factor! Let us see what the replays have to say...
Sabbir Rahman walks out to bat now.
Kuldeep comes back on.
Mahmudullah walks out to bat next and face the hat-trick ball.
Drinks break! The 3rd wicket has fallen just before the break. A really good but slow stand between Das and Musfiqur means that even though Bangladesh have a decent look on the scorecard, it is not good in the context of the game. They now need 191 in 111 balls and it is really difficult. They would not mind though as in my opinion they were trying to gain as much batting practice off this game as possible. Meanwhile, Mohammad Mithun walks out to bat now.
Liton Das has got hit on the neck. He is in pain. The physio is out in the middle having a check on him. Bangladesh must be praying that he is fine and it's nothing more than just a blow.
Ravindra Jadeja is now on.
Yuzvendra Chahal comes into the attack now.
Liton is bringing another bat now. Some issue maybe after that shot when the ball hit the previous bat really low.
Vijay Shankar has been brought on now.
Drinks break! MS Dhoni is seen running in wearing the wicket-keeping gloves and the helmet! A solid start it was from Bangladesh but two wickets in two balls by Bumrah meant the Indians got back on top. The current pair has added 25 for the Tigers and they would need to go big as well as fast now if they are to scale the big target in front of them. Will they? India, on the other hand, will now look to choke Bangladesh with spin. An interesting passage of play ahead!
Kuldeep Yadav comes onto bowl now.
Powerplay 2 time! 4 fielders will be allowed outside the 30-yard circle now till the end of the 40th over.
Mushfiqur Rahim walks out to face the hat-trick ball! Two slips and a gully in place!
Shakib Al Hasan walks out at number 3.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar comes onto bowl now.
Shami with a false start... seems to have missed his run-up. The second or third time today!
FREE HIT TIME!!!
Jasprit Bumrah has the other new ball in his hand.
We are back for the chase. The umpires walk out followed by the Indian team. Dinesh Karthik will be donning the keeper's gloves just like the first warm-up game for India. The two openers for Bangladesh are Liton Das and Soumya Sarkar. No Tamim, hmmm... Liton is on strike first up and will face Mohammed Shami. Let's play!
