4

to Roy, FOUR, cracking shot! A bit of width on offer outside off and it is a bit short as well, Roy pounces on the offering with a slap cut through backward point

4

Cummins to Bairstow, FOUR, super shot! Bairstow picked the length early there, a bit too short from Cummins and it's been disched cleanly over mid-wicket with a pull

4

Cummins to Bairstow, FOUR, fab shot! England are off the blocks quickly here in this run chase. Cummins errs on the fuller side this time and it's straight in line as well, Bairstow times the on-drive beautifully. Mid-on was a mere spectator

6

to Roy, SIX, top edge but it's gone all the way! Proof of the pace on display and the quickness of the surface. Well-directed bouncer from and Roy was in no control on the pull. Ended up skewing it high and but over the ropes straight behind the batsman

4

to Roy, FOUR, easy pickings. strays onto the pads in search of the inswinger. Roy just had to get bat on that and he does so with a tickle down to the fine leg fence

4

to Roy, FOUR, up and over! Full this time and outside off, Roy decides to go straight down the ground and clears mid-off with ease. Clean striking. This is some riposte from England

6

Cummins to Roy, SIX, another top edge, another six! He's living dangerously, is Roy but he is not going to die wondering. The bouncer and he swivels on the pull stroke. Not really in control but manages to clear fine leg easily. England are on the rampage

4

Cummins to Roy, FOUR, raining boundaries at the MCG. Timed the pants off this one. Full and too straight from Cummins, it's driven sweetly by Roy wide of mid-on. Races away

4

to Roy, FOUR, glorious from Roy! He's putting on a show here. Full and around middle, no swing this time and Roy rams the drive straight back past . Mid-on tries with a dive but it was past him like a bullet

W

to Bairstow, out Caught by Paine!! Edged and gone! Not the wicket Australia were after but they will take this. Back of a length outside off, angling across Bairstow who goes for the cut but only manages a thin edge. Extra bounce did him in and Paine took it easily. Respite for Australia. This has been an excellent start from England, Roy in particular. Bairstow c Paine b 14(11) [4s-2]

4

to Hales, FOUR, he is off the blocks in a flash as well. The idea is clear from England, go real hard at the new ball to trim the target down. Short ball from and although Hales didn't time the pull well, he kept it along the ground and importantly, got it wide of mid-on

W

Cummins to Hales, out Caught by Stoinis!! Got him! Cummins has his revenge. It's the short ball and much like the previous over, Hales isn't in control. This time though, it goes off the toe and is aerial towards mid-on where Stoinis grabs it comfortably. This is the issue with such intent, wickets are bound to fall especially against a good attack. The plan has worked though in terms of reducing the run rate but England will have to be smart. Australia won't mind these boundaries as long as they get wickets at regular intervals. Hales c Stoinis b Cummins 4(3) [4s-1]

4

to Roy, FOUR, over mid-on! Roy continues to give the charge. Short ball and he goes back to flat-bat the pull stroke. Two bounces into the ad boards

4

Cummins to Root, FOUR, top shot! Cummins gets greedy and overcooks this, Root leans forward and drives it straight back past the bowler. It was past mid-on in a flash and raced away

4

Tye to Roy, FOUR, excellent shot! This was just incredible batting because it was a decent ball from Tye. Roy just walks across the stumps and is on the charge as well, fetches this from outside off and shovels it wide off mid-on. What a way to get to his 12th ODI fifty!

4

to Root, FOUR, nicely worked away! Full and on middle and leg, Root gets across and clips sweetly through square leg. The man in the deep is well behind square and cannot get to it despite a desperate effort

4

to Roy, FOUR, off the edge but there's no slip! Would say that this has come about due to the success of his methods. Smith had taken off the slips for him and this attempted cut goes off the slice right through where first slip would have been. No chance for Paine

4

Cummins to Roy, FOUR, just past a diving Paine! Short and angling down the leg-side, Roy tries to pull but gets it off the glove. Desperate dive by Australia's wicket-keeper but he cannot reach it. First boundary after 60 balls

OT

to Roy, no run, Roy given out leg-before! Huge moment. He's gone up for the review though and rightly so. At most, the impact is going to be marginal. No, in fact, per ball-tracking, the impact is outside the off-stump. So Roy will survive. He didn't pick this googly and was hit pad first in defence

6

to Roy, SIX, now he dances down and just about clears Finch at long-on. Didn't look like he got this out of the meat, more off the toe-end, but still manages to get it all the way

OT

Tye to Roy, 3 runs, Roy pulls this into the vast expanses of the mid-wicket region. They'll surely come back for three. It's a hundred for Jason Roy. He leaps into the non-striker's end after completing the third run, taking off his helmet and punching the air. Magnificent innings

4

to Roy, FOUR, brings out the reverse-sweep and smashes it through point. He's timed that well enough to beat Travis Head running across from sweeper cover. This is superb batting

4

to Root, FOUR, nails this full toss from through mid-wicket. England regaining their momentum in the last couple of overs

OT

to Root, 1 run, creams the full ball through cover to bring up his half-century as 'Rooooooooooooooot' rings around the MCG. Wonderful partnership batting from Root

4

Marsh to Roy, FOUR, he's smashed this down the ground, phew. Belter from Roy. Marsh lands it on a length outside off but the pace isn't there and Roy flat-bats it straight back. Nearly took Root out. Finch slaps the turf in frustration after a sloppy dive. Should have cut it off

4

to Roy, FOUR, this is just frustrating for Australia, but it's all running for Roy right now. Searing yorker at the toes from round the wicket, Roy rushes his bat down and manages to nutmeg himself off the inside edge. The ball races away

4

Marsh to Roy, FOUR, oh easy. Too easy for Roy. Short of length at his body with fine leg up, nonchalantly pulls it over the fielder

4

to Roy, FOUR, this is an awesome shot from Roy. To pull so far in front of square is special. Not only that, he's fetched this one from well outside off after walking across

6

to Roy, SIX, roundhouses the short ball over deep mid-wicket. Rank half-tracker from . He's not getting away with Roy in this mood. England cruising

4

to Roy, FOUR, shuffles across and sweeps this ever so fine. Hands on head for Australia. There's no answers they have for Roy

OT

to Roy, 2 runs, skewed off the inside half through square leg, and back they come for the second again. Roy raises 150. Just splendid this

4

to Root, FOUR, such a filthy delivery, dragging it short down leg. Root smashes it to the fine leg boundary

6

to Roy, SIX, this was actually well bowled from , not allowing Roy to get to the pitch as he advanced. But Roy is batting on another level. He goes through with the loft and the flourish takes it over the ropes

4

to Roy, FOUR, gosh he's almost waiting for this ball to arrive to him. In position so quickly for a short of length delivery and pulls it over wide mid-on. not bringing it this evening

OT

to Roy, 2 runs, full at the stumps, Roy works it with the angle through mid-wicket and it's another two

W

to Roy, out Caught by (sub)Jhye Richardson!! Roy's magnum-opus is done. He's caught off the top-edge down at fine leg, going for the same pull shot which he's nailed time after time tonight. Just a little bit of spongy bounce for off a slower ball perhaps. But what a tremendous innings this has been. Warner shakes his hand on the way off, Root runs up to congratulate him, followed by a big ovation from the crowd. Take a bow, Jason Roy. Roy c (sub)Jhye Richardson b 180(151) [4s-16 6s-5]

W

Cummins to Eoin Morgan, out Caught by Smith!! Makes a bit of room and cuts this straight to Smith at point. He hit that pretty nicely actually, just couldn't get the gap. So the England skipper goes for 1. Too late for Australia though. Eoin Morgan c Smith b Cummins 1(4)

4

to Root, FOUR, full in the slot, Root takes the initiative and lofts this straight back down the ground. Not quite the timing he'd have wanted but it trickles away into the ropes

W

to Buttler, out Caught by Starc!! Takes on the short ball, but gets it straight off the top-edge and the ball lobs down fine leg's throat. Never looked comfortable with the bounce there. England losing late wickets but they're sure to get home. Buttler c Starc b 4(10)

4

to Moeen Ali, FOUR, down the ground to hammer it through mid-on. Sensational win for England here at the MCG

4

to Finch, FOUR, what a shot to start! Overpitched from but this was attacking the stumps. Finch got his front leg out of the way and thumped the drive past mid-on. Middled it beautifully

4

to Finch, FOUR, bang! Finch is in the mood very early. Short and wide, he doesn't hold back and places the cut behind point. Didn't overhit it really, more of picking the gap

W

Wood to Warner, out Caught by Root!! Huge strike! Just the start England were after. This is what genuine pace can do and this is exactly what they lacked in the Tests. Wood cranks this up at 142.3kph and shortens his length around off, climbed onto Warner who was in a tangle as he tried to fend. Only managed to get an edge that skied high towards the cordon where Root accepted it by moving a few steps to his left. Australia have been dented early. Warner c Root b Wood 2(5)

4

to Finch, FOUR, finds the fence! Finch continues to motor along. Short and a bit of width, he stays back and rides the bounce to cut it through backward point. Determined chase by the fielder but they have already run four. As is turns out, the ball had touched the ropes anyway before it was hauled back

4

Wood to Finch, FOUR, good riposte from Finch! He is expecting the short ball and this doesn't climb that much. He controls the pull and gets it over square leg. Easily done

4

to Smith, FOUR, cracking shot! The short ball at ' pace isn't going to trouble anyone, let alone an in-form Smith. He shuffle scross and swivels to launch the pull over mid-wicket. Smashed that

4

to Smith, FOUR, creamed! errs on the fuller side this time, overcooked with plenty of width. Smith doesn't miss out, reaches it with a firm drive past the diving cover fielder. All hands from the Australian captain and it races away

4

Wood to Smith, FOUR, clipped away! A rare bad ball from Wood, low full toss and Smith shuffles across to time the flick beautifully. Beats a diving mid-wicket. This was a shorter run up from Wood and it's certainly not worked for him to start with

W

Rashid to Smith, out Caught by Buttler!! Rashid nails a big scalp! I know this is a different format but England would be happy that they have Smith cheaply after, well, ages. Lovely bowling from the leggie, an attempted leg break and Smith wanted to drive through cover. Didn't turn at all and he got a faint inside edge. Well taken by Buttler and the Australian captain knew it as soon as it passed the bat. Both the Aussie big guns are back in the hut. England are totally chuffed. Smith c Buttler b Rashid 23(18) [4s-3]

4

to Finch, FOUR, fine batting! Finch seems to be in total control. This is fractionally too short from and the length was picked up early by Finch who went for the pull. There is a man in the deep for the short ball but this was placed well to his left

4

to Finch, FOUR, edged but no slip! Could say that this is poor captaincy from Morgan although Finch is well-set. Back of a length delivery around off, he pushes inside the line and gets a healthy edge. Wide of Buttler and away to the fence

4

Rashid to Head, FOUR, lashed away! Head gets going. A bit too full from Rashid and it's a touch wide as well. The southpaw gets to the pitch and drives it wide of mid-off. Finds the gap and it was really well-timed

W

to Head, out Bowled!! Chopped on! 's turn to strike and Australia are now in a slight spot of bother. Short of a length but there isn't much room for Head who goes for the cut. Gets cramped in the end and only manages a thick inside edge onto the sticks. England are pumped, this is just the kind of start they needed after Morgan opted to bowl. Head b 5(8) [4s-1]

OT

Rashid to Finch, leg byes, 1 run, good ball from Rashid but did a bit too much in the end. Lovely googly around off, Finch played around his front pad and got struck near the thigh. Seemed like the impact would be dicey but Rashid egged Morgan onto the review. As it turned out, no bat involved and the impact was fine as well but it was missing leg stump. England have lost their only review

4

to Mitchell Marsh, FOUR, Marsh didn't much about this! Still gets a boundary for it. Cricket is a batsmen's game after all, right? Shortish and around leg stump, he wanted to get out of the way of this one but was in a tangle. Ends up getting a bit of glove but it's well wide of Buttler down the leg-side

4

Rashid to Finch, FOUR, Finch continues to march on. Sees the flight on offer and absolutely clouts the slog sweep. The man in the deep is in front of square and he gets this squarer. Nicely done!

OT

Ali to Finch, 1 run, a bit aerial but easily over mid-wicket. Finch gets across to flick this away, just about cleared the infield. Gets to his 18th ODI fifty, has looked good right from the word go

6

Rashid to Finch, SIX, seemed like a mishit initially but he has cleared long-on comfortably. Floated up around off stump, gets down on one knee for the slog sweep. Enough meat on it to clear the ropes, that too at the MCG. Some power!

6

Ali to Mitchell Marsh, SIX, he's teed off! Marsh has been biding his time and finally, decides to open up. Tossed up invitingly by Ali and it's been lifted straight over his head. Lovely sound of the bat meeting ball and it went deep into the crowd near the sightscreen. Huge strike and it's tallied 97 meters!

4

to Finch, FOUR, whack! Made a cracking sound off the bat. A fraction too short from and as he has experienced before today, this stuff is going to disappear. Finch shuffles across on the back foot in a flash and absolutely clatters the pull to the deep mid-wicket fence. Brings up the 50-run stand in style

4

to Finch, FOUR, gets too straight does and Finch is able to tickle him away fine for four. Ordinary bowling. He's been expensive today

4

Rashid to Finch, FOUR, superbly played. Having judged the ball to be drifting in on leg, Finch bends down quickly and sweeps it away past short fine leg. Lovely timing

6

Rashid to Mitchell Marsh, SIX, flat six, slams into the ad boards behind the boundary ropes. Once Rashid dropped it short, Marsh was quickly back in the crease to bludgeon it over mid-wicket

6

Rashid to Finch, SIX, just clears the ropes, Finch into the 90s. Mid-on was up and the idea was to smash this full ball over him. The timing is so good that it goes the distance

OT

Ali to Mitchell Marsh, 1 run, makes room and cuts it through the covers

6

Rashid to Finch, SIX, goes for it and gets it! He knew immediately where it was headed and before it even crossed the ropes, he was looking at the balcony celebrating. Flighted googly by Rashid, throwing out the carrot, and Finch hammers it over long-on for the ton

4

Rashid to Mitchell Marsh, FOUR, crushing blow down the ground, the ball curving in the air like a banana as it travels straight back over Rashid's head. He tossed it up again but it landed right in the slot

W

Ali to Finch, out Caught by Bairstow!! He's holed out at deep mid-wicket. Ali deserves a lot of credit here. He's been able to keep Finch quiet off his bowling right through his spell. Knows that the batsman is trying to break free and fires it in while following him down leg. Gets the miscue off the inside half. Good catch running in by Bairstow. That'll be drinks too. Finch c Bairstow b Ali 107(119) [4s-10 6s-3]

4

Wood to Stoinis, FOUR, bad ball from Wood. He strays on leg-stump with this short of length delivery, allowing Stoinis to get inside the line and help the pull fine for four

OT

Wood to Mitchell Marsh, 1 run, knocked in front of point for his fifty

W

Rashid to Mitchell Marsh, out Bowled!! He's slipped this right through the gate of Marsh, who just didn't pick it well. It was bowled off the front of the hand, so it slides on from a length while Marsh is expecting it to turn. Plays a long way outside the line of it. The ball sneaks through and clips leg-stump. Rashid has been expensive today but he's now got two big wickets. Mitchell Marsh b Rashid 50(68) [4s-2 6s-2]

6

Rashid to Stoinis, SIX, gallops down the track to take it on the full and whacks it over wide long-on

4

Wood to Paine, FOUR, oh lovely shot. Paine compensates for three dots in a row with a boundary of the fourth. Overpitched from Wood outside off, and it's been slotted through extra-cover. Held his composure there

D

to Paine, 1 run, punched back down the pitch, and it's probably a dropped catch from . Tough low chance in his followthrough. It was timed crisply and had to be quick. But he does get there with his left hand, just can't hold on

4

to Stoinis, FOUR, sits up for Stoinis from a short of length and he pummels it to the mid-wicket boundary

4

Wood to Stoinis, FOUR, this has been cut away and almost travels the distance. Just a foot short of the ropes. There was a man out there who thought he was in with a chance but it kept going and flew over his head

4

to Paine, FOUR, slower short ball, Paine doesn't get all of it but the fielder is up at mid-on and he's pulled this over him. It runs away to the ropes

4

to Paine, FOUR, short at the body, decent height, but Paine's got stuck into this. He's almost pulled this all the way. Lands just short of the backward square boundary

4

to Stoinis, FOUR, pumps this low full toss straight down the ground, giving mid-off no chance

4

to Stoinis, FOUR, low full toss on leg stump, Stoinis whips this away with sublime timing. Rockets into the long leg boundary. Fifty from Stoinis and it's come in quick time

6

to Stoinis, SIX, picks the bones out of this slower ball. Nails it down the ground for a mighty six

W

to Stoinis, out Caught by Root!! Root has taken this diving forward. He gives the thumbs up, and the umpires and Stoinis are happy with his affirmation. Couldn't quite get hold of this short of length delivery as he tried flat-batting it down the ground. Not sure if it was the change of pace but Stoinis got it high on the bat and it spooned in front of mid-off where Root does an excellent job. Still three overs to go. Stoinis could have been very dangerous if he'd stayed out there. Stoinis c Root b 60(40) [4s-5 6s-2]

W

to Paine, out Caught by Moeen Ali!! Oh how calmly done by Ali. He's treading a thin line there at the long leg boundary as Paine pulls this in the air. Keeps his eyes on the ball while running across, watches it over his right shoulder and then takes it almost when it's behind him. Beautifully done. When he hit it, it looked like the pace and bounce of will carry it all the way. Paine c Moeen Ali b 27(31) [4s-3]

4

to Pat Cummins, FOUR, a slower short ball, and is so unlucky to watch it loop over the keeper's head off the top-edge. It's anything goes at this stage for Cummins

W

to Pat Cummins, out Caught by Roy!! This is a miscue and should be taken at long-on. It is. He was too early into the loft and almost scoops it up in the air, never getting the distance behind it. Pat Cummins c Roy b 12(10) [4s-1]

4

to Andrew Tye, FOUR, oh dear, in going for the catch, Bairstow has conceded the boundary. He came charging in from the mid-wicket boundary but the ball dropped well short and Bairstow didn't get his body behind it either. Andrew Tye is all smiles as he hits his first ODI ball for a boundary. Australia finish with 304
