to Dickwella, out Caught by Jadeja!! This was coming. The end of Dickwella's struggle. Stay away from the coach and the captain sir! He's developed great variations over the last couple years, has Bhuvi. This is a lovely knuckle ball that has no pace. Dickwella obviously did not pick it. Played completely across the line when a cover-drive would have been a better shot with the ball being outside off stump and going across the left-hander. Only manages to get a leading edge that goes to Jaddu at backward point. Excellent shot for India. Dickwella c Jadeja b 7(18)

4

to Gunathilaka, FOUR, this is probably the shot Dickwella should have played. This delivery was slightly on the shorter side than the wicket ball. Gunathilaka stayed back and drove into the ground, beating Pandya at cover

6

Yadav to Gnathilaka, SIX, with pace, yo can hrry the batsman, bt pace does help the batsman travel the distance as well. This was a short delivery on the leg stmp, Gnathilaka swivels and jst helps it on its way with a pll, didn't hit that hard at all, yet the ball sailed way over the long leg ropes

4

Yadav to Gnathilaka, FOR, that's a top shot from Gnathilaka. mesh searches for swing and bowls fll, the line is otside off stmp, it's a forward stride from Gnathilaka and he's able to place the drive between mid-off and extra-cover

4

to Kusal Mendis, FOUR, where's second slip, Virat Kohli? Can't blame him too, because there's not much swing on offer, but this did swing away late and find the edge. This delivery tells you how is a thinking bowler. He bowled a good inswinger previous ball, knows Mendis is fresh at the crease and is struggling for timing, bowls the outswinger outside off stump, the batsman wants to feel the ball, threw his hands at it, went with hard hands on his defence and got a thick edge that flew past first slip

4

Yadav to Gnathilaka, FOR, gee, this lad is looking very good indeed. Hasn't played rash shots. All proper cricket shots and he is scoring at 113. Fll and angled in, the on-drive is middled nicely, nearly took his partner off at the other end, mid-on was very wide to stop this

4

to Kusal Mendis, FOUR, top-edge and four, Kusal is living dangerously, once again - he was done in for pace. Banged in short and on the stumps, rushed onto Kusal's attempted pull, the top-edge lobs Dhoni and rolls away to the fence

4

to Kusal Mendis, FOUR, short and wide from , he hasn't hit his straps in this tournament so far. Kusal reaches out and drives it on the up, gets it into the gap wide of cover and rolls away to the fence

4

to Gunathilaka, leg byes, FOUR, short and angling into Gunathilaka, he was caught in a mighty tangle as he shuffled across on the pull, the ball popped off his thigh-pad, beats Dhoni and slowly rolls away to the fence

D

Pandya to Kusal Mendis, no run, that's a tough chance and has grassed it. On a good length and just outside off, Kusal was prodding forward on the drive, hits it in the air and to the left of the bowler. was on his follow-through, got both hands but can't quite hold on

4

to Gunathilaka, FOUR, lovely shot, tad overpitched and on the stumps, Gunathilaka has a penchant for straight drives - plays with a straight bat and drills it back past the non-striker, no need to run for those

4

Pandya to Gunathilaka, FOUR, edged and four, width on offer from , Gunathilaka's eyes lit up as he saw the width, throws his bat at that, gets a thick top-edge, through the vacant slip cordon and into the fence

6

Pandya to Gunathilaka, SIX, cracking shot, fraction short and just outside off, Gunathilaka swivels across and there's no small measures on the pull, sends it high and over mid-wicket, went a long way over the ropes, brings up his fifty as well, his 4th in this format of the game

4

to Kusal Mendis, FOUR, poor from Yuvraj at long-on, didn't read the spin and made a complete mess, this was tossed up on the stumps, Kusal shuffled down the track, gets close to the ball and whips it over wide mid-on. It was in the air for a long while, Yuvraj ran across for the catch, then realised that it wasn't a chance, however, he overran and ended up missing the ball completely

4

to Kusal Mendis, FOUR, lovely, RJ drops one short and on the stumps, Kusal rocks back and pulls it over mid-wicket, a couple of bounces and over the ropes

OT

to Gunathilaka, 1 run, uses the angle across him to his advantage by angling another single down to third man

4

to Kusal Mendis, FOUR, India just aren't able to build pressure right now, and a lot of credit has to be given to the duo. Good calculative batting. Mendis takes the chance with mid-wicket inside the ring. Goes down low and sweeps off the stumps over the fielder

6

to Kusal Mendis, SIX, did him in length there, but Mendis still goes through with the shot and gets it over the mid-wicket boundary. Brings up his half-century as well. He came down the track but couldn't get close to the ball. Didn't panic though

4

to Gunathilaka, FOUR, goes reverse, and scoops it for four. For a moment there it looked like it came straight off the top-edge, which it might have, but the ball loops past the short third man fielder

4

to Gunathilaka, FOUR, shortish outside off, Gunathilaka rocks back and cuts him for four through point. India being made to fret now

D

Pandya to Gunathilaka, 1 run, Rohit Sharma almost pulls off a blinder. He had it there, before his elbows hit the ground and the ball wriggled out. Gunathilaka takes a chance, maybe because it's Pandya. Might have been an off-cutter, so he's early into the loft and gets it right off the toe-end. He has skewed this well in front of long-on and Rohit does so well to make the ground. Just can't latch on

4

Pandya to Kusal Mendis, FOUR, blooters it back over the bowler's head. They're really biting into India now. Good length ball, Mendis plants his foot down and hits through the line

4

Pandya to Kusal Mendis, FOUR, top-edged and four. Short of length into the body, the ball gets big on Mendis as he pulls and he's in no control. But the placement couldn't be any better - right over the keeper

4

Pandya to Kusal Mendis, FOUR, short of length again, this time Mendis gets right on top of the bounce to pull it to the long-leg boundary. 15 off the over. Where does Kohli go?

OT

Jadhav to Gunathilaka, 1 run, sliding in with the arm, Gunathilaka backs away to punch through point

4

to Kusal Mendis, FOUR, a real loosener to begin with, dropping it halfway down the pitch and the ball just sits up at his pace. Pulled away into the gap for four. Real gift

W

to Gunathilaka, out Gunathilaka Run Out!! 1 run completed. Oh dear, what have they done?! They had India running ragged, only to throw it away via a run-out. Completely unnecessary. This could easily prove to be a game-changer. Clipped away behind square on the on-side, they both are slow on the first run but still decide to take on Umesh Yadav's arm. The throw is a brilliant one - fast, flat and right beside the stumps. Dhoni, as expected, is lightning quick with the gloves and he catches Gunathilaka short by six or so inches. His bat was in the air too. Gunathilaka knew it straight away and swings his bat in the air in disgust. Gunathilaka run out (U Yadav/Dhoni) 76(72) [4s-7 6s-2]

4

Jadhav to Kusal Mendis, FOUR, he's laid into that. Width on offer from Jadhav and Mendis creams it through the covers. He is the key now

W

to Kusal Perera, out Kusal Mendis Run Out!! Sri Lanka trying their best to run themselves out of the contest, quite literally. Shocking cricket. Both their set batsmen gone to needless run-outs, and now the middle order is thoroughly exposed. Good length delivery on off, Perera inside-edges onto pad and the ball is barely a metre or so beside the pitch. Absolutely no run there. Bhuvi charges at the ball, picks it up and absolutely shatters the stumps. Mendis did his best with a desperate dive, and then just lay there in despair. Kusal Mendis run out () 89(93) [4s-11 6s-1]

4

to Kusal Perera, FOUR, slices it in the air, very reckless. Boy, that's gone for four. Probably that's why he played the shot. No one back there in the off-side. Flat, full, and wide, Perera chases it and just opens the bat-face through point. Dhoni really irked by that line from

4

to Kusal Perera, FOUR, Kusal Perera bringing out the Sanath in him. Innovation at its very best. Spotted the dip at around middle stump and reverse slapped it away over short third

4

Pandya to Mathews, FOUR, the boundaries keep coming. Pandya hits his natural length - back of a length, but he gets his line wrong. With fine leg inside the ring that's easy pickings for Mathews who tickles it away with a swivel off his feet

4

Pandya to Kusal Perera, FOUR, if there is one bowler that Sri Lanka will target, it's this man - Pandya. Kusal Perera not afraid to advance, that's the way he plays. Gets right to the pitch and lifts it away over mid-off. Power!

OT

Yadav to Mathews, no rn, direct hit and Perera was gone! Mathews mistimes the pll to Jadhav at mid-wicket who hrries himself into a shoot-first-balance-next throw and misses by a few inches

4

Yadav to Mathews, FOR, right in the slot, Mathews likes it there. ses all his msclar power to pick-p pll that over mid-wicket, cannot place fielders for that kind of a shot

4

Yadav to Ksal Perera, FOR, 50 partnership between Perera and Mathews. Straying on the pads is mesh Yadav, Perera says thank yo and pnishes him one-legged ala Sanath Jayasriya towards the fine leg fence

4

to Kusal Perera, FOUR, oh Kedar Jadhav. Jasprit is breathing fire. A low full toss on leg-stump, Perera swings across the line and what did Jadhav do? He overruns to his left from deep mid-wicket and allows the ball to sneak past his body. Very vital. slings his arm in disgust

4

Yadav to Mathews, FOR, a little too fll perhaps, Mathews takes fll toll of it. Clears his front leg and clatters it away over wide mid-off. There's no protection in the deep

4

Yadav to Mathews, FOR, this is easy peasy for Angelo Mathews. Can't bowl at his pads. He sees the line and flicks it away over fine leg

6

Yadav to Gnaratne, SIX, short and drifting towards his head, helped away with the wind. As simple as that. Gnaratne swivels to fetch the line and once he got inside he jst helped it away in its direction. All the way over a helpless fine leg fielder

4

to Gunaratne, FOUR, fast hands! Knuckle ball, sat up on the pitch around middle and leg, Gunaratne rocks back and brutes it away behind square

4

to Gunaratne, FOUR, stays way outside the leg-side and manufactures the needed room, thrashes Kumar through point. Gunaratne showing what he is capable of...

6

to Gunaratne, SIX, I've seen this lad play in Australia and I'm not surprised one bit that he is hitting the ball as clean as a whistle. Gets down on one knee and sweeps into the stands over backward square. Gee, that takes some doing

4

to Mathews, FOUR, past backward point to his left. No nerves for Mathews. Gets freedom outside off and he times the pants of a cut shot, that just raced away

4

Yadav to Mathews, FOR, greyhonds down the pitch and takes his side on the brink of a victory. A captain masterclass. A fifty on his comeback. Angelo Mathews, yo beaty. Hammers mesh Yadav straight down the grond

4

to Rohit, FOUR, now then, now then, what was that from Lasith ? That's very loose from a world-class bowler. No real intensity in the run up, a gentle loosener with width on offer, just what Rohit wants on a greenish surface to get going and he won't miss out on those. Doesn't try to overhit the ball, reads the outswinger, just guides it through cover-point where there is a big open space and he has a very good willow in his hands to help the timing. Great start for India, very poor from Sri Lanka

4

to Dhawan, FOUR, "Don't bowl there to Shikhar Dhawan," says Athers on air. Dhawan is very good in the point region, he's a back foot player, so got to draw him forward when he's fresh at the crease. drops this short, offers width and Dhawan unleashes a fierce cut that escapes past the diving backward point fielder

4

to Dhawan, FOUR, he missed out on the previous ball, but got the placement right this time. gets greedy in search of swing, bowls full yet again, there was a bit more width on this one and Dhawan creamed the cover drive

4

to Dhawan, FOUR, what a shot! Talk about sweet timing and the sound of ball hitting the middle of the bat, gee, this made great sound. Dhawan attacked the bowler by stepping down the pitch, converted a length ball into a full ball and drove that through cover

4

to Dhawan, FOUR, four more, the top edge this time, but the Indian fans don't mind. banged the ball short to surprise the batsman, but Dhawan was up for it. Went for the pull, got the edge and he was lucky that it went in the gap between the keeper and fine leg

OT

to Rohit, 1 run, now then, could a direct-hit have ended Rohit's stay? Oh yes! He was a goner! India very lucky with this one. A high-risk quick single this and Kohli will not be happy with any of his batsmen gifting wickets. Good length delivery just outside off stump, Rohit defends and gets an inside edge towards short mid-wicket, the bowler attacks the ball and throws at the non-striker's end but misses

4

to Rohit, FOUR, gee, this guy is a stylish player. Isn't he? Look at the ease with which he's played this shot. Back of a length on the stumps, Rohit moves across, a swivel actually and then he nonchalantly pulls with a clean bat swing, the ball bounced just inside the rope at deep mid-wicket. The crowd absolutely loved it

4

to Rohit, FOUR, that is what you to the bowler when you don't respond to his plans. Rohit wasn't keen on driving the previous ball, that forces to do something extra, he wanted to bowl full, but dropped it short and wide, Rohit takes full toll with a cut shot through cover-point

4

to Dhawan, FOUR, bad start from . From round the wicket and sliding down, Dhawan helps the vertical bat sweep, gets a feather and that's enough to beat Dickwella and race away

4

to Rohit, FOUR, can Malinga get there? He can but can't prevent the boundary. Down leg, swept away fine and Malinga put in a tired effort, can only push the ball away into the ropes

6

Perera to Rohit, SIX, in the air and six. Look at Rohit's reaction. He has a beaming smile and has a word with Dhawan. Fifty for Rohit too. His missus shrieks in delight with fingers crossed. If Gunaratne at deep square leg, been back right on the edge of the boundary, he would've had a better chance to balance himself and try to catch that. Instead he backpedals and can only palm it over after getting both hands high to try and catch it. A top edge and Rohit didn't connect cleanly. Got away with it and he is relieved for he knew he made an error

6

Perera to Rohit, SIX, he has nailed that. The first pull in the over was a top edge. This isn't. Right off the meat of the blade and in between long leg and deep square. A swivel and thumped flat. Lands on the boundary cushions. The short ball ploy to Rohit won't work if you don't get it right. He is arguably the best player of the short stuff in this team

4

to Rohit, FOUR, mid-off in is a bait for Rohit. He takes it on and goes wide of the fielder. Down the track and lofted cleanly. In the air but no chance for the fielder

4

to Rohit, FOUR, stand and deliver. He did the same to Pakistan a couple of days ago. Repeats the dose to . An off-speed cutter outside off, sat up for Rohit to power that. In the air but split cover and mid-off to perfection. The fielders didn't even move

4

to Dhawan, FOUR, 50 for Dhawan. His second in two games. Gets a hug from Rohit. Gets there with a flowing drive. Nothing delivery from , with lots of width. Short cover is straight but he had no chance. Front foot planted forward and then smashed wide of mid-off

6

to Rohit, SIX, top edge and six. Actually it was a good short ball. Near the chest of Rohit, who swivelled and got a fat edge. No fine leg as well, a fielder is there, but he is more towards deep backward square leg. Flies away into the fence. Third six for Rohit. is bleeding runs

W

to Rohit, out Caught by Thisara Perera!! has his revenge. And raises his arm in delight and celebration. Similar short delivery to the last one, but one crucial difference here was Rohit's intent. Didn't go full-throttle on the pull, was trying to place it. But could only find fine leg, to perfection. After getting out, he shadow-practices the pull - trying to suggest that he should've played it down. Didn't roll his wrists sufficiently enough for him to get on top of the ball. Loops to Thisara and he won't drop that. Finally relief for Sri Lanka. Rohit misses out on a hundred for the second successive game. Rohit c Thisara Perera b 78(79) [4s-6 6s-3]

W

to Kohli, out Caught by Dickwella!! Duck for Kohli. And how does he get out. Guess, guess! Caught behind. Nothing shot. But full marks to Mathews for getting back and giving him the field that made Kohli play this shot. It bounced from a good length outside off and Kohli was trying to run it down, between the keeper and wide slip. Feathered it to Dickwella who gloved it and then appealed. Easy call and suddenly India have lost two in quick time. Kohli c Dickwella b 0(5)

4

to Dhawan, FOUR, this is a pale shadow of 's best days. He is just ambling in and bowling half-trackers, with no pace to back him. Sits up for Dhawan who murders the pull through mid-wicket. Deep mid-wicket had no chance

4

to Dhawan, FOUR, short cover's reaction says it all. He put his head down in disappointment as the ball raced away. Cracking cover drive from Dhawan. Overpitched outside off and Dhawan didn't miss out

4

to Dhawan, FOUR, came back over the wicket and bowled short on the stumps, easy for Dhawan to swivel and pull behind square. Split the two men to perfection. didn't get enough behind that short delivery and paid the price

4

to Dhawan, FOUR, great counter-attacking batting, helped by ordinary bowling. Short and wide outside off, Dhawan delays the cut and beats Gunathilaka to his right. Third man can only run around to retrieve the ball from the ropes. Successive fours for Dhawan

4

to Dhawan, FOUR, three in a row for Dhawan. Five since Kohli's wicket two overs ago. Too much width outside off, laced wide of cover. No chance for deep cover. Problems for Mathews

W

to Yuvraj, out Bowled!! What happened there? It all happened in slow motion. End of Yuvraj's troubled stay. The crowd cheer - mostly Indian - as he walks off. That shows how popular he is wherever he goes. Loopy middle finger pushed through ball, Yuvraj converted that into an yorker by jamming down on it so late. It bounced onto the stumps after hitting the ground. Good enough to flick a bail off. Yuvraj can't believe that he has got out in such a way. But he has to go. Timely wicket for Sri Lanka. Yuvraj b 7(18)

OT

to Dhoni, no run, loud shout for lbw, not given. Mathews reviews. Only thing that can save Mahendra Singh Dhoni is if it has pitched outside leg. Mind you, Kettleborough doesn't get many wrong. No inside edge onto the pad. Flicked the front pad and then the back one. Waiting for ball-tracking. And it is pitching outside leg. So that's that then. The Indians roar. "They know their cricket" compliments Athers on air. Dhoni is a slow starter first up, is late to get forward to push that. The ball sneaks past the bat and hits the pad. Everything going for it, except where it has pitched

6

to Dhoni, SIX, wow! That has been whiplashed away all the way over deep backward point's head. It was short and wide outside off, Dhoni didn't hold back and gave it his all on the slash. Deep backward point was interested for a while, but it sailed over his head

4

to Dhoni, FOUR, isn't happy. Malinga at short fine can't dive and allows the ball to go past him. The other fielder close to him too gives up the chase. Short-arm pulled - a Dhoni trademark where he brings the bat down vertically like an axe and comes down hard on the ball. Right in between the two. A dive would've stopped the ball

4

to Dhawan, FOUR, swung away to the deep backward square fence. The line helped him, sliding into him and he just had to hit the gap. Placed it beautifully and then exchanges some glove-love with Dhoni. Just a hit away now

4

to Dhoni, FOUR, one bounce over the ropes at deep mid-wicket. Picks the short ball so early and latches on. Swivels back and then smashes with all his might. Nearly carried all the way

4

to Dhawan, FOUR, 100 for Dhawan. And there comes the trademark lean-back, arms stretched wide with a big smile on his face celebration. We saw that twice in the last CT in England. Third hundred in this competition and he has joined a select band which includes the likes of Gibbs, Ganguly and Gayle. Some company to be in. Brilliant shot. He has been so good on the late square cut today. Leant back and then powered it wide of point. Third man was beaten easily too. Gets a good round of applause from the Indian contingent at the Oval. A wink at Dhoni and a word too. He has played terrifically today - as he did the other day against Pakistan. An all-time great in tournaments!

4

to Dhawan, FOUR, driven straight off long-off and Gunaratne dives over the ball and it slips under his body to roll away to the fence. Smashed the full ball and Guna had too much ground to cover to his left

6

to Dhawan, SIX, first six for Dhawan. Got inside the line and helped the shortish delivery over short fine. Went back 8-9 rows into the crowd. And he winks at Dhoni again. The ball was at the perfect height for Dhawan to get across and play that kind of a shot

4

to Dhoni, FOUR, high full toss, slammed across the line and beats deep mid-wicket to his left. Hit with brute force. Dickwella and Thisara are left looking a bit perplexed

4

to Dhoni, FOUR, low full toss now, Dhoni powers the square drive and sweeper who is Guna dives just for the sake for it. Knows that it will beat him as the ball purrs across the turf. He was shadow-practicing the square drive, to get it finer of the sweeper, when he hit the first ball of the over straight to the fielder at sweeper. This time he has executed it to a nicety

4

to Dhawan, FOUR, that's a bad misjudgement from Gunathilaka running to his left at deep square. Dhawan shuffled across and helped the sweep. The breeze may have played a factor as well as Guna reached there in time but the nature took the ball out of his two-handed attempt to catch that on the dive. In the end didn't even get a hand on it. What's worse it rolls away to the ropes. has a bewildered expression on his face. Without saying anything. Expect those catches to be taken a this level

4

to Dhoni, FOUR, so powerfully hit. Mathews grimaces. Low full toss outside off, Dhoni brutalises the drive and sweeper running around can't even get the chance to dive

W

to Dhawan, out Caught by Kusal Mendis!! End of Dhawan. He walks off to a standing ovation. Good bowling from , dragged Dhawan across with a slower delivery outside off, since he went such a long way from his stumps, he couldn't generate enough power on the loft. Straight to long-on. Dhawan walks off with a bat raise and blown kiss to someone in the crowd. Dhawan c Kusal Mendis b 125(128) [4s-15 6s-1]

4

to Dhoni, FOUR, down leg, off-pace, Dhoni shows off his other side, helping it past Dickwella and fine leg is too square to cut it off

6

to Hardik Pandya, SIX, lovely shot, Pandya swings it into the short boundary, but this one would have cleared any rope. Poor ball from , he went searching for that yorker, offers a full-toss on Pandya's pads, he gets down low and whips it high and over mid-wicket, went a long way into the stands

W

to Hardik Pandya, out Caught by Kusal Perera!! has his man, this is much better from the Lankan premier pacer, this was the slower ball, he rolled his fingers across the seam, went wide of off as well. Pandya had to manufacture all the power, reached out for the ball, played with an open face and ended up slicing it high and over cover. The trap was set and the man in the deep had a simple catch to accept. No end over heroics from Pandya this time around. Hardik Pandya c Kusal Perera b 9(5) [6s-1]

4

to Kedar Jadhav, FOUR, this is good cricket from Kedar, backed away early, let the bowler follow him, then he slightly adjusted and got back into his batting stride, uses the pace on the ball and nudges it fine, beats the keeper and rolls away to the fence

OT

Perera to Dhoni, 1 run, fifty for Dhoni, but he wants a change of bat, wants a heavier bat - I presume. This was full and wide from - bowling with an open action, helicopter shot from Dhoni and it bounces in front of long-off

6

Perera to Dhoni, SIX, that ruins the over for , a scream of anguish from the bowler as he misses his yorker, turns out into a low full-toss and it's thumped miles into the mid-wicket stands by MS

Perera to Dhoni, out Caught by Chandimal!! Sri Lanka have kept MS relatively quiet during the death overs and they have now got rid of the big hitter. Very well bowled by , kept it full and kept it wide of Dhoni's reach. The Indian keeper had to go a long way across to get to the ball, as a result, the balance wasn't quite there behind the shot, ends up slicing it high and straight to Chandimal at long-off.
