4

to Warner, FOUR, Warner gets into his business. A half-volley for Warner, is that a death wish, ? Not sure, but a juicy full-ball and Warner leans forward and cracks the drive gun-barrel straight down the ground. No need to run for those as it races away to the fence in a jiffy

4

to Warner, FOUR, that's a poor ball and gets punished. Slipping on leg, Warner just moves inside the line and uses his magic wrists to place it behind square. The fielder in the deep does his best running across, but it runs away to the boundary

W

to Cartwright, out Bowled!! This was coming. Cartwright was clearly struggling to get going and castles him. A skiddy back of a length delivery, not the ideal length for the pull. But Cartwright trusted his instincts and went for it, but the ball didn't rise as much as he expected and he misses it completely. Off-pole goes for a cardio training. Chepauk crowd goes berserk. Cartwright b 1(8)

OT

Pandya to Smith, no run, India review for an LBW. Fair ball. Looks pretty close on first viewing. No bat involved. Ball tracking in: Pitching - outside-off. Impact - in-line. Wickets - Umpire's call. Smith survives. It was on a short of length and zips through, Smith had shuffled across his sticks and missed it. The ball raps him on the pad, Pandya went up straightaway but no dice from the umpire. Kohli and Co. went upstairs but technology came to the Australian skipper's rescue

W

Pandya to Smith, out Caught by Bumrah!! Gone. Big, big wicket for India. After surviving the scare, Smith has been consumed the next ball. Brilliant take from Bumrah too. It looked like the off-pace delivery that held on the pitch, Smith was a little early into his shot. Was caught in two minds and ends up top-edging it high in the air. It was swirling to Bumrah at short fine. He kept his eyes on the ball as he backtracked, went reverse-cupped and pouched the steepler. Smith c Bumrah b Pandya 1(5)

W

Pandya to Head, out Caught by Dhoni!! Pandya is having a dream day. He picks up his second wicket. "Won't mind the single given," says Murali Karthik on air. Three down now for Australia. They are in some trouble. A slanter across the southpaw, Head went for a booming drive, the ball curves away late and all Head could do was to feather a nick to Dhoni. Pandya exults in delight and leaps up in his celebration. Head c Dhoni b Pandya 5(6)

W

Yadav to Warner, out Caught by Dhoni!! Another wicket for India. Australia are in a disarray at 35/4. The old two-card trick from . After tossing it up off the previous ball, he pushed one quicker. It fizzes through and Warner sought for a cut. Too close for comfort and he nicks one into the bread-bucket gloves of Dhoni. Warner's iffy stay comes to an end. Warner c Dhoni b Yadav 25(28) [4s-2]

4

Pandya to Maxwell, FOUR, expertly done by Maxwell. Knew exactly what he was doing. It was short and outside off, Maxwell arched his back a little to accommodate the bounce and opened the bat face at the right time to ramp it over short third man. Fantastic!

4

Pandya to Maxwell, FOUR, this is pure muscle power from Maxi. Saw the short ball early, stayed back and swatted it firmly in front of square. Picked his spot to perfection

4

Yadav to Maxwell, FOUR, poor ball from and Maxwell dismisses it from his presence. Dropped short down leg, Maxwell rocked back and pulled it over short fine leg. Couple of bounces and into the fence

6

Yadav to Maxwell, SIX, he didn't get this one off the sweet spot, but such is Maxwell's power that it sails over the rope at deep mid-wicket. Tossed up on the stumps, Maxwell stayed a bit low and slotted it off the top half of the bat, enough for the ball to fly over for a maximum

6

Yadav to Maxwell, SIX, back-to-back sixes for Maxwell. He steps out this time, reaches the pitch and blasts it straight over the bowler's head

6

Yadav to Maxwell, SIX, Maxwell does a Hardik Pandya. Three sixes in a row. Flighted on middle and leg, Maxwell sat low to get underneath of it and smashes it over deep square leg. Into the vacant stands

6

to Maxwell, SIX, Maxwell is dealing with sixes here and the crowd havegone silent. Flat and full on middle and leg, Maxwell smokes the slog sweep into the deep mid-wicket fence

W

to Maxwell, out Caught by M Pandey!! And, now they find their voices - the Chepauk crowd. Nicely done by . After firing in the previous balls, this time he slows his pace and gives a bit of flight. The line was wide of off as well. Maxwell had to fetch it from there and went for the slog over cow corner. Fails to time and holes out to long-on. Maxwell c M Pandey b 39(18) [4s-3 6s-4]

W

Yadav to Stoinis, out Caught by (sub)Jadeja!! The Aussies are falling apart here in Chennai. Another one bites the dust. Floater from Yadav, Stoinis sinks low to slog sweep, but doesn't get the required elevation. A massive top-edge and Jaddu, at deep mid-wicket, won't drop those. Stoinis c (sub)Jadeja b Yadav 3(10)

D

to Wade, no run, dropped! A tough one to be honest. It was a full toss from , Wade jogs down and hits it straight down the ground. sticks his right hand out, but couldn't hold onto it

4

to Wade, FOUR, good shot! Wade steps out of his crease, takes it on the full and brooms it away through mid-wicket. The man in the deep puts in a dive, but in vain

D

to Faulkner, 1 run, puts down another return catch! He tossed it up outside off and Faulkner wants to hack it across the line, was way too early on the shot and the ball lobs up off the toe-end. does well to get close to the ball by running across, but fails to clutch onto it

W

to Wade, wide, out Stumped!! There's the MS special for Chennai. There is nothing in cricket which can be compared with Dhoni's speed to remove the bails. Well, lets give credit to as well. He saw Wade come down the track and bowled a googly wide of off. Slow as well, Wade sticks his bat out, but is beaten by a long way. Dhoni whips off the bails and Wade was well short. Easy one for the TV umpire. Wade st Dhoni b 9(10) [4s-1]

4

to Pat Cummins, FOUR, shot! Kumar drops it short and Cummins isn't afraid to go after it. Clears his front leg and pulls it fiercely in front of square on the leg-side. The man in the deep is a mere spectator

W

to Pat Cummins, out Caught by Bumrah!! Eighth one down! Smith wears a sad look on his face. A leg-break that pitched around leg and turned away. Cummins clears his front leg to go for the mighty heave over mid-wicket. All he manages is a thick outside edge that settles into the safe hands of Bumrah at short third man. Pat Cummins c Bumrah b 9(7) [4s-1]

6

to Faulkner, SIX, turning way outside off, fulller in length. Faulkner reaches out for it and thumps it over the bowler's head for a maximum

4

to Faulkner, FOUR, 'bowl those yorkers,' will Kohli be saying. Decks in a back of a length delivery and Faulkner has a slash at it. Gets an outside edge that goes well wide of the keeper and into the third man fence. Streaky

W

to Coulter-Nile, out Caught by Kedar Jadhav!! NCN picks the man in the deep to perfection. Kedar Jadhav didn't have to move an inch to pouch that. Slower length ball from Kumar, Coulter-Nile spotted it and played the pick-up shot by staying back in his crease. However, he hit it straight to the man at deep mid-wicket. Australia are nine down now. Coulter-Nile c Kedar Jadhav b 2(5)

W

to Rahane, out Caught by Wade!! Edged and caught! Early strike from , this was short and wide of off, Rahane saw the width and went hard on the cut, gets a thick top-edge and Wade does the rest, moved to his right and snaffled it in front of first slip. A failure for Rahane and India have lost their first wicket. Rahane c Wade b 5(15)

D

Cummins to Rohit, no run, edged and dropped, that's a massive let-off for Rohit and it's Smith who has dropped it. Agony for Cummins, he's forced Rohit into the mistake, the pressure was telling on him and it made him play a nothing short. With two slips in place, he was looking to dab it towards third man, the edge is found and it went at a good height to Smith's right, he went with both hands and drops it

W

to Kohli, out Caught by Maxwell!! Stunner from Maxwell and India are in some trouble now. Kohli falls for a duck, the crowd is hushed into silence. This was full and this was wide of off, Kohli saw the width and threw his hands at that, gets a thick outside edge on the slice. It went high and towards backward point, any other fielder, it would have lobbed over, but Maxwell timed his jump to perfection, went with his right hand and the ball stuck. Delight for the Australians, despair for the Indians. Kohli c Maxwell b 0(4)

W

to M Pandey, out Caught by Wade!! India are in serious trouble now. Another duck and it's Manish's turn to walk back to the pavilion. Ravi Shastri looks concerned in the dressing-room. This was full and swirled away late, Manish was looking to jam it towards third man, the bat hit the ground and at the same time, it took the outside edge as well. Another easy catch for Wade, the Aussies knew they had their man, the third umpire needed just one replay to vindicate their belief. M Pandey c Wade b 0(2)

4

to Kedar Jadhav, FOUR, cracking shot, the Chepauk crowd finally find their voice, full and wide of off, Kedar gets into a good position on the square drive and finds the gap past cover-point, off the mark with a boundary

4

Cummins to Kedar Jadhav, FOUR, Kedar has started in a positive fashion. This was full and on his pads, he pressed across and flicked it in front of square on the on-side, beat mid-on and the ball slowly rolled away towards the ropes. Head gave the chase - all the way from mid-wicket, puts in the dive and pulls the ball back in, but as he did so, his foot was in contact with the ropes

4

to Rohit, FOUR, short, wide and four, gentle loosener from , Rohit had to reach out on the cut, gets on top of the bounce and guides it into the gap at backward point

4

to Kedar Jadhav, FOUR, short, wide and four, pressure releasing stuff from , width on offer and Kedar doesn't let it go by. Gets on top of the bounce and cuts it behind square on the off-side, Coulter-Nile gets across from third man, puts in the dive and can't drag the ball back in

4

to Rohit, FOUR, smashed, counter-punch from India after the three early jolts, length delivery on off, Rohit gets forward and thumps it back over the bowler's head, one bounce and over the ropes

4

to Rohit, FOUR, slapped, width on offer from and there's no second measures on that sliced drive from Rohit, was in the air, but went past Maxwell even before he could reach there with the dive, the man in the deep is square and he had no chance

W

to Rohit, out Caught by Coulter-Nile!! Rohit has thrown it away and India have lost their fourth wicket now. This was banged in short and well outside off, Rohit swivelled across on the pull, wasn't in a great position on the shot. As a result, he got a thick top-edge, it went high and towards deep square leg. Coulter-Nile had plenty of time to settle under it, went reverse cup and holds on. A wicket against the run of play and Smith can breathe easy now. Rohit c Coulter-Nile b 28(44) [4s-3]

4

to Kedar Jadhav, FOUR, rank long-hop and Kedar doesn't miss out, is quick to rock back and pulls it hard and flat over mid-wicket. Almost went all the way, bounced just in front of the ropes

4

Cummins to Kedar Jadhav, FOUR, edged and four, streaky from Kedar, no second slip and he gets away with this one. He did intend to run it fine, not that fine though. Just one slip and Cummins watches gutted as it runs away to the third man fence

OT

to Dhoni, 1 run, a run-out scare.. and then he gets the single he wanted. Taps to cover and takes off, Cartwright gets hold of the ball and has an ageon of time to tackle the stumps. Misses, he misses! Overthrows and then Dhoni - quite karmically - gets the run he'd bet his wicket on

W

to Kedar Jadhav, out Caught by Cartwright!! Oh dear, a run-out stutter last ball and here's a wicket. Dhoni could have been out last ball, takes the single after an overthrow and here's Kedar Jadhav miscuing a pull straight - dare I say, that's straight - to the fielder at mid-wicket. In no position to play that. Hadn't read the short ball at all, so had his weight in front and just chipped the pull into someone's hands. Cartwright's hands. Second wicket for and both have come off surprise short balls. Kedar Jadhav c Cartwright b 40(54) [4s-5]

4

to Hardik Pandya, FOUR, that's good. Makes up for the ugly non-drive last ball. So the short ball is cutting in from outside off, Hardik Pandya arches his back a touch and just lays the bat, sky-facing, in the middle of the ball's trajectory. Bounces off it and flies over slip

4

to Hardik Pandya, FOUR, edged to Smith's left at the slip! Looked like it did carry. Just moving away outside off, the good thing Hardik Pandya did was to soften the impact, opening the bat face last-minute. So the ball went slow to the left of Smith, who had his weight back and hence the hands were slow to get forward. Through to the fence. Australia's captain hasn't had the best day at slip

4

to Hardik Pandya, byes, FOUR, now that's missed everyone. Scoots below Hardik Pandya's thrash-cut and swings in to deceive the wicket-keeper, too

4

to Hardik Pandya, FOUR, okay, firstly, there was a hybrid fielder in place for this ball. A man right behind the umpire, between mid-off and mid-on, and this ball just clears him. Wanted to get the height downtown but picked a ball too full. Just about manages a chip over

6

to Hardik Pandya, SIX, if the last ball was full and straight, this is just outside off. And see where it goes. Over straightish long-off! Smacked.

6

to Hardik Pandya, SIX, now, now, he reaches his fifty. Slow on the stumps and Hardik Pandya's smoked it over long-on! Times it so, so well

6

to Hardik Pandya, SIX, had 28 runs in his 7 overs before this. He's conceded 23 in this already. The quickish delivery on middle, and Hardik Pandya doesn't quite get hold of this because the ball is spinning away a touch. But who cares. Is able to horsepower it over straightish long-on this time. Third consecutive six!

4

Cummins to Hardik Pandya, FOUR, that's a giveaway. Short down leg and a swiveling pull's enough. Readymade width down leg and the area's vacant. Get a boundary

4

to Hardik Pandya, FOUR, drops the cutter just a touch short and look how Hardik Pandya's reacted. Rocks back and pulls it uppishly through cow corner

6

to Hardik Pandya, SIX, that's not even in the crowd; that's beyond them. Bowled slow outside off and Hardik Pandya has slogged it over long-on. And does it with such brutal delicacy that you wouldn't know that the 100-run stand's up

6

to Hardik Pandya, SIX, is this about egos? Does not even flight it. More of a good length and Hardik Pandya slogs over the long-on fence. Mammoth

W

to Hardik Pandya, out Caught by Faulkner!! Such are the rules of this game that it's always a bowler who has the last laugh. Hardik Pandya goes for the slog again, cannot get underneath it, the ball turns a bit, takes the thick edge and lobs towards Faulkner at short third man. Pandya falls 17 short of the ton. But he has given India the impetus now. Hardik Pandya c Faulkner b 83(66) [4s-5 6s-5]

4

to Bhuvneshwar, FOUR, that is more like it. Full toss and Bhuvneshwar clubs through mid-wicket. There was gap available in the deep and he managed to cash in

4

to Dhoni, FOUR, top edge but almost clears the fine leg fence. First four for Dhoni after he has faced 66 balls. Was a bouncer and he wanted to hook it, the ball rose a bit and took the top edge. Fine leg was nowhere in the frame

4

to Bhuvneshwar, FOUR, this man can hit at time. Steps down to a short ball and keeps himself away from the line of the delivery to allow himself the room. Pulls and despite not having timed it well manages to get it just past mid-on

OT

to Bhuvneshwar, no run, Bhuvneshwar wanted to dab this in-cutter towards third man. Hit the face of the bat and deflected to the flap of the pad. More of a tactical review from Australia

4

to Bhuvneshwar, FOUR, did he read that soft comment? If yes, I had my Shane Warne moment. Anyway, a length ball and Bhuvneshwar clears the front leg to slog past mid-on

4

to Bhuvneshwar, FOUR, that's luck in motion. A yorker and Bhuvneshwar somehow manages to get some inside edge to that. Misses the stumps and races to the fine leg fence

OT

Cummins to Dhoni, 1 run, fifty for Dhoni. This man! When was the last time he gave up without a fight. Rises to a short ball and taps in front of point. Slight hesitation as Bhuvneshwar comes in his way. Both correct it and Dhoni gets the single. To be honest, the fielder was not even trying to get to the ball

4

to Dhoni, FOUR, short ball on leg. Fine leg is in the ring. That's not smart. Dhoni waits and pulls over the fielder. Just bounces inside the fence

6

to Dhoni, SIX, he does not play in that region. I saw him playing a similar shot when he scored that ton against Pakistan here, almost half a decade ago. Steps down and opens up a bit, slices the loft over the deep extra cover fence. Strident cheer engulfing Chepauk

4

to Dhoni, FOUR, he is smart. Knew there was going to be change of pace from and moved across. Gave himself enough time and space to lap this back of a length ball through fine leg. Good over for India

4

to Dhoni, no ball, FOUR, oversteps. Big one. Bowls a short ball that is slow and towards leg-side. Dhoni gets across and helps the pull. Fine leg is not in the frame

6

to Dhoni, SIX, steps down. Makes room and goes inside out over long-off to suggest you can learn things once you have gone past 30. Have hardly seen him play this shot. By the way, well into the stands

W

to Dhoni, out Caught by Warner!! Dhoni is gone. Hold on, they are checking for a no-ball. He is fine there. Dhoni charged down the track once again. Did not get enough on the slog and found long-off. Enters the dressing room to a rousing reception. Dhoni c Warner b 79(88) [4s-4 6s-2]

4

to Bhuvneshwar, FOUR, Bhuvneshwar gets across to a fuller ball outside off and scoops over short fine leg. Just inside the rope there
